Vibration Issue After Flashing to Gingerbread - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I flashed to the leaked 2.3.3 ROM and KF1 kernel when it dropped during the summer, and noticed that the vibrate notifications (either in silent mode or normal) do not work. I found a thread with instructions to test the vibration function, which worked fine, but my phone will not vibrate at any other time. Has a patch been released to solve this issue, or is there a work around for this?
I am currently without a computer, so anything I can do directly from the phone would be prefered.

As far as I know, there were certain bugs along the way in several of the "leaked" i897 firmwares starting with the kf1, and going through kh3, ki1,ki2, kj1,kj2, and now kj3. Certain bugs have been fixed along the way, but these are "leaked" firmwares so bugs are to be expected.
So, a fix for you would be to upgrade to one of the newer firmwares (once u have computer access again). If you decide to do that, just choose one without the Bootloaders, since you are already running a GB firmware.

Thanks for the info.

[Q] Updating beyond JG5, suggestions?

Afternoon,
I intend to update the firmware and move to the 'one click lag fix', could someone recommend a firmware update that would be the least problematic? I'm assuming that sticking to 2.1 is best right now, reading up on the JPC issues. What's the most up to date that has been released officially? I would use Kies, but I get so many issues, I've lost all patience. The current one is the home screen constantly flashing with 'Initialising...', but never actually connects... sigh. Searching seems to be down
Thanks,
Zas.

[Q] Bell Mobility JK4 vs. JL2?

Hi everybody, with the release of JL2 that supposedly "fixes" the SD card corruption, I have some questions.
Last week when I finally got my phone back (with JH2), I flashed JK4 using Odin (no repartition or PIT), and it worked flawlessly. I have not been having any issues with GPS or any crashing/freezing. I have two questions:
1. If I flash JL2 over JK4, do I need to wipe my data / cache afterwards, or can I leave it to keep all my settings and programs? They're both Froyo roms, so I'm not sure what is safe to do in this situation.
2. What is the difference between JL2 and JK4? I've compared the individual files inside the tar files, and they all seem to have the exact same size, but different dates. See the attached image for reference. Is it possible for the files to actually contain different code that fix the problem, even though the files are the same size? Has anyone noticed a true difference between the two ROMs?
Basically, I'm trying to decide if it's worth the risk to flash a new rom and/or have to go through the trouble of reconfiguring everything, if I may not need to.
Thanks, Mike.
have same question got my phone from repair and they installed JK4 on it... should I update it to JL2?
1. You're probably safe to flash without any wiping. If you do happen to run into any issues though a factory reset would likely take care of it.
2. I can't say for sure what's different, but GPS for me is much better - it locks on much faster and seems to be able to maintain the locks it has. I've also noticed no issues with WiFi so far - I did have an issue with WiFi on JK4 where it would not turn on and throw the occasional error, but I've played on WiFi on and off a few times on JL2 and it's been fine.
I'd say flash it - I was on JK4 but fell back to JH2 due to the bricking problem - even if I had no issues on JK4 and kept with it I'd flash JL2 anyway.
What risks are you talking about that your not already taking with JK4? An update is an update so you should update. I like how you say everything is working flawlessly so I do not want to change it and risk "something happening" 90% of users who have had there phones fail from custom roms and JK4 there phones were working flawlessly. Mine worked flawless for 2 weeks then boom Sd corruption some phones last even longer.

I must say, your sig is classic. Hahahah.
The file that supposedly fixes the corrupt internal SD card is the sbl.bin
It's some type of secondary bootloader, and it may be that it needs to be a specific size and reside in a specific location for the hardware to process it during boot.
If that is the case, the fact that the sizes match does not mean the files are identical, and you should definitely update to the newest sbl.bin by flashing jl2.
Also, I love that quote about the '10 types of people' because anyone who understands binary should actually correct it to '1 types of people' In binary 0 is a valid first type of people; and '10' means there would be 3 types.
I guess that makes you the 3rd type...

[I9000M] JL2 + SpeedMod kernel - results?

In an effort to get BLN back on my I9000M, I'm trying to decide if it's worth switching to the SpeedMod kernel. Since I've got my I9000M back from repair and upgraded to JL2 it's been running flawlessly so I don't want to mess with it - but I do want BLN.
So JL2 users with SpeedMod - any problems so far? (and which version of SpeedMod are you using?)
I'm referring to this SpeedMod, btw:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756
I would definitely switch to SpeedMod. It's a great, fast kernel with a ton of options.
It wouldn't cause the SD card to die, if that's what you're thinking, because by flashing the JL2 firmware you're flashing the secondary boot loader (Sbl.bin) which fixes the issues with the SD card. The kernel is like an entirely separate entity than the sbl, which means it won't brick.
So, go ahead and flash it.
Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't worried so much about the internal SD as I was about things like WiFi battery drain which seems to have become an issue in some of the 2.2.1 releases.
But since I'm not too familiar with Android/Linux development, I'm don't know if it has more to do with the JP* firmwares or the kernel itself.
I've been running it with speedmod k10k all lagfix/speed options disabled (I don't need them, this rom is quick!) and my phone is working like a champ. wifi/gps off, push/pull on w/ hsdpa, I can go just about two full days without charging. With wifi on and gps on plus everything else, I can go about 10-12 hrs.

I was under the impression that the sd card issue was a bit deeper than just flashing a new bootloader. Is there a thread with more about this? i dont want to brick any more phones, and if flashing JL2 will correct the memory issues, i'll gladly go back from jpy. and is there any way to flash the SBL (if it in fact fixes the sd corruption) without changing anything else? ie: sticking with my jpy without a whole pile of flashing to jl2, then back, etc.
Thanks for the input. Running now with all the recommended tweaks but no lag fix... Maybe a bit more fluid in the ui, but honestly jl2 was so fast to begin with its hard to tell All i really care about is that i got bln back.
Will be watching battery overnight with fingers crossed.

I too would like a little more official information about this, and whether the new SBL fixes this. As this seems a little to quick for Samsung to say they've fixed the problem. Who knows that would be a great not to live in fear each and everyday I use my SGS
I'm so new to this - is this easy to do ? to flash this rom ?
where's the best way to start, you tube? is there any reccomended tutorials ?
I have a SGS from bell, it's my 2nd one. I haven't upgraded to Froyo yet b/c I can't connect to Kies. Should I just flash instead ?

Running JL2 + Speedmod + lagfix, phone is fine so far. BLN was causing the touch aspect of my screen to not work so i couldnt even unlock it. havent had a change to fool around with it though.
Been running Super Optimized Kernel instead of SpeedMod in my custom ROM, and I've noticed that its been much faster. Gonna stick with it for now.

[Q] i9000 is buggy / would custom rom fix this / what rom

So I hate my Samsung Galaxy S i9000 but only because it doesn't work. IF it was working I would love it a lot. The phone is rooted and I am running Vodafone's standard version of Froyo if such a thing even exists (no custom rom).
Now I have read about Odin and different firmwares but I am still VERY lost. I don't even know if any custom firmware would do me any good.
So here are my problems:
My Galaxy S is laggy as hell even tough I have installed lag fix.
GPS doesn't work AT ALL. I have installed pretty much every silly GPS app I could find on forums and in the market. I also entered a bunch of silly numbers yet the GPS is wrong by like 500 metres. Sometimes it gets VERY accurate if I run GPS Aids but google map instantly "fixes" it in just 1 second and screws up badly again >:C
If I take pictures with the front camera they will get displayed once I reboot the phone
and so on. it's completly buggered and I don't know why.
------------
So will a custom rom fix this kind of stuff? will i get working gps with a custom rom or are those gps apps supposed to fix my GPS which they don't at all?
Do custom roms force a loader on me? I like TouchWiz.
Can I still use Gmail and other google apps with a custom rom?
Seriously I am pretty confused and don't know what to do since September 2010 but I never brought up the curage to ask / thought I might figure it out by studying forums but I am still terribly lost.
If your phone is playing up that much I'd think a custom or different stock rom would be the your best bet. I remember when I got my phone it was horrible in terms of stability and lag etc etc, since I've started flashing different roms I haven't looked back, of course you lose your warranty though. I think most of your problems are probably software related, though they could be hardware(gps /camera). To pick a rom your either looking at Froyo or Gingerbread, then do you want a stock(many newer stock Samsung roms are fairly good in stability and performance) or custom(modified stock roms), then you can go picking from there. Read up lots before you flash on what things are(Kernels, modems, clockworkmod, download mode, odin etc) and then if you are confident go for it. Don't hesitate to ask anything
Reading and learning are the key, as stated, my recommendation is to explore the ezbase roms and easy Odin as a great and easy start to rom flashing, and dont be afraid to ask,

thanks a lot for the help.
If I set my phone back to factory reset will it jump back to 2.1 - the OS the phone came with or will it STAY at 2.2?
to be honest I personally believe the rom won't get touched if you do a factory reset so I will be stuck at 2.2. i have called samsung and they said it would jump back to 2.1. now i don't believe a single word samsung says.
IF I can always go back to 2.1 I could try Samsung's 2.3 - see if that does me any good and if that doesn't work I will jump back to 2.1 and root it again and use a custom ROM. I have already rooted it and used a one click solution which exists for 2.1 and 2.2 (i forgot the name of it but it was some orange icon with some arrow in it).

2.2 or whatever the current rom is .
suggest one update to Froyo 2.2.1 its the best . 2.1 is very laggy
no custom rom can fix a broken gps if it is broken
remove lagfix before flashing any rom .
Possible best fix would be to wipe phone via factory reset losing all data
Via Odin install Froyo 2.2.1 with pit 512 and repartition checked .
GPS hardware thread fix may help .

so
1) the samsung dude told sh*t when he said it would jump to the firmware the phone came with (just as i had assumed)
2) froyo 2.2.1 is more stable and better than any build of gingerbread? i thought gingerbread was a great battery saver and overall really nice
3) so with the gps problems i have stated it sounds more like broken hardware instead of software? i could still give the phone back but from everything i have read on the net GPS is just buggered on the galaxy s.
like i have said with GPS aids it will work fine (gps aids will give me a PERFECT location) but once I jump to google maps - google maps will automatically "correct" the positing which will be way off.
4) sorry for that stupid question but i don't really understand "Via Odin install Froyo 2.2.1 with pit 512 and repartition checked". What exactly is "pit 512" and what does "repartition checked" mean?
sorry to ask
Go to ezbase thread and there you will get instructions with screenshots of how to use it, and all the stuff you need to download, and you can then flash either a slim rooted 2.2.1 or 2.3.3.

Gingerbread glitches? Android novice needs help!

So Bell Canada and Samsung both have terrible technical support.
My phone is i9000m, Bell Canada, running 2.3.3 (UGKG3). It had 2.2 in the box, and I upgraded through kies pretty recently.
Since the upgrade I have a few new problems that I didn't have before:
-GPS, which used to give me useful and reasonably accurate tracks for my walks and bike rides now spits out a bunch of garbage.
-Download mode still works, but recovery mode doesn't.
-Serious power drain under "Android OS." Upwards of 90% in an hour. Goes away if I kill "google services."
Do a factory reset if you haven't done one already. Most of the time that clears up any update bugs...

This did nothing for me except give me the headache of re-installing all my apps (again). Still no recovery mode, shoddy GPS, and crazy battery drain... oh and my bluetooth keyboard no longer pairs? What's up with that!?
Anyone have any other ideas???
New issue:
Market hangs at white screen after starting install on 10th app. Reset sometimes allows installing another one or two, but after that it'll hang again.

Fixed, rolled back to previous version of Market.
New issue since another factory reset (2nd), 10 second delay between button press and lock screen.
I am sorely tempted to defenestrate my phone...
Why don't you flash a custom rom?

If I could find a rom that fills all my needs better than stock 2.2, I'd be all over it. I have a lengthy list of requirements though, and warranty eligibility is in the top 3 (especially if I defenestrate the thing).
Can anybody recommend a rom with bluetooth working for wiimote and keyboards, netflix working smoothly (2.2 doesn't, stock 2.3.3 does), good power consumption, and stability?
In the mean time, I'm still dealing with the other issues outlined in this thread.
Flashing a custom rom would almost definately sort all your problems. As to which rom, you seem perfectly capable of reading. If you are worried about warranty, you can simply flash back to stock...........

For me that`s a last-ditch solution. I`m usually in a hurry when I break a phone and I`d want to be able to just plop it down at the bell booth during the work day, rather than taking it home first and flashing it (assuming it`s not broken beyond that point).
Hi,
I recommend you to try perform a Hard Reset with code *2767*3855# in dialer ( formats also your internal SD), flash the phone again (better with Odin) with a "standard" version.
Optional make a new Hard Reset (in special if didn't repartition the phone).
After that you can use a custom rom if you want. In past I used DocRambone rom, but now I preffer S.U.R.F.A.C.E. rom with Hardcore kernel and GO Launcher. GPS, phone, browser ....running without problems and battery keeps me over 50 h of medium use without GPS.
Tried hard reset and flashing the same stock 2.3.3 UGKG3 rom. No change. Still can't get into recovery mode, still crap gps, still 10 second lag between button press and screen on, still crazy battery drain.
Rolled back to 2.2, everything works except recovery mode and having weird problems with market imagining that I have apps I've never even looked at before and difficulty downloading. Market cache clear doesn't help. Hard reset doesn't help.
Upgraded through kies to UGKG3 again. Same problems as before, but market works at least. If no solutions available today, I'm taking it to Bell for service and maybe exchange. If that doesn't resolve I'll flash a custom rom.

GPS borked entirely this time. Gets a fix, but the fix doesn't follow me. If I run My Tracks, it just stays in a 10 meter area while I walk in a 4km circle away from and back to that area.

Phone was sent in for repairs and returned to me this morning. GPS still broken (completely, no signal period). Everything else seems fine.
the issues you are having suggest to me the problem is with the KG3 stock rom.
Before getting even more frustrated with both your phone and Bell, I would advocate:
1. do a complete phone clean with sd card reformat (sent you a pm with a link)
2. flash the stock JVR pda in odin and also flash the KG3 modem and CSC at the same time
3. you are then still on stock Samsung, official firmware and within warranty even if that firmware has yet to be released in Canada
4. then if you want you can still flash a custom JVR kernel and a custom JVR rom if you want to improve performance and/or alter features beyond stock

Thanks for your help. I'll look into it.
Before I do that, do you or anyone else have the stock settings under *#*#3214789650#*#* (AngryGPS)??? The settings for the SUPL Settings section are all BLANK!!! I can only assume the rest of the settings in AngryGPS are too. That seems bad.
