Hey Guys..
I dunno if this has been answered before, but I can't seem to find. But I wanted to be able to put files larger then 4gb on my sd card. I have read a few things that people have partitioned their SD card into 2 partitions. 1) fat32 partition that the phone sees as sd-ext, and 2) a 2nd partition that allows files larger then 4gb.
Any recommendations/suggestions how I could do this? Or any apps that assist in this?
My phone is rooted btw...obviously its a script that would need to be run at boot.
Thanks!

Hi,
I was not able to find the reason behind partitioning the sdcard for nexus one.
I have just installed the CM 5.0.6 but I do not know whether I should parition the sd card or not.
Thanks.
You should just partition the SD card if you want apps2sd, or debian.
Why? Because it's formated as a single FAT32 volume by default, basically to store all your stuff (media, pics, data, etc...), but if you want Android to use it (linux, basically) you have to partition it and format your new partition as extX.
Hope it helped.
you don't have to partition. but, it allows you to do things like install apps to your sd card since the n1 doesn't have much available space to begin with.
Am a newbie to the whole G1 scene, but got some questions regarding partioning.
What is the whole purpose of partioning your SD card?
What are the benefits of doing this?
What is EXT2, EXT3 and whichever you choose what does that give you?
Thanks.
On a normal SD card, there is a FAT32 partition for storing your music, photos etc.
If you are using a custom rom, you can add either or both of these partitions to your sdcard:
-SWAP this lets the phone use part of the sdcard as ram when the phone ram runs out.
-EXT2/3/4 this lets you install apps on the sdcard instead of installing it on the meager memory of the phone.
That has cleared a few things up for me - Cheers.
I have Nookie Froyo installed on a 4GB uSDHC and picked up a faster 8GB uSDHC. I'd like to migrate my "stable" install to the 8GB so that I can use the 4GB for experimental stuff such as Honeycomb (at least until that becomes stable enough to take over as primary). I'm not sure exactly how to do this, though.
It seems like I should be able to put the 4GB card in my PC and pull a raw image using WinImager, then write that to the 8GB card and use a partitioning tool to stretch the last partition out to fill the space, but that only seems to image the boot partition, not everything.
Any help is greatly appreciated, both how to copy the image to another card and how to resize the partitions to take advantage of the additional storage after doing so (if necessary).
I looked for other threads on this topic but couldn't find anything clear enough to follow, but feel free to point me at existing documentation if it already exists.
Clone thread. See general. Maybe two weeks ago..

Thanks, Sam. Okay, so I found the following thread that I assume is the one you mean:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943164
I still don't quite follow, though. So when I insert the 4GB Froyo SD card into my computer I only see the ~117MB root partition even in utilities like Partition Master. I can instead use your utility to explicitly mount partitions 1-4 when the NC itself is connected to the PC, and I can use Win32DiskImager to read images of those partitions, but I'm not sure how to write those to my 8GB SD card.
Someone else mentions "packing your boot, system, data and sdcard partitions into a .img file", but I'm not sure how to do that. Is that as simple as catting all four files into a single image? Doesn't seem like that would preserve the partition information, though...
Do I just reformat the 8GB SD card, create partitions of the respective sizes in Partition Master, and then write the individual partition images?
Like I said...still confused here. Thanks in advance for any additional info!
For what it's worth, I was able to do this quite easily by purchasing a new SD card reader in which EASEUS Partition Master could see all partitions on my SD card, then using its "Copy Disk" wizard to copy the entire 4GB SD card to the 8GB SD card, and finally resizing the last partition to fill the card. Worked like a charm!
First off I have a Galaxy S Captivate and I'm a noob when it comes to the mods on this phone. It is rooted. I bought a 32gb sd card and wanted to partition into two partitions. I did some searching and found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543985. It worked great, but it didn't modify the ext sd card. It partitioned the internal card instead. Now instead of seeing the 16gb internal I'm seeing 13gb.
Question is, is there an easy way to 'undo' this without loosing everything and actually partition the external card?
Thanks in advance,
~jesse
The internal /sdcard partition should only have around 13gb. The entire phone has 16gb this includes all the system partitions and a 2gb partition in /data for user apps.
Okay so it repartitioned the internal storage. Is there a way to point it to the external to partition it? I'm wanting to move the apps to the sd to free up space. Sorry for the dumb questions...
You can't install an app in an external sd.
You can move apps from /data/app, which has the 2gb capacity, to a folder in /sdcard with native froyo software.
Settings>applications> manage applications>"the app you want"> move to sd.
Guyz,
Seriously bugged with this low internal memory. pls tell me step by step method how to partition my memory card to two n store apps.
I had previously read a thread from XDA developer only and followed steps which made my SD card damaged.
What i did was
1. Backed up SD card contents to PC
2. Downloaded link2sd app to phone.
3. Downloaded root file to phone.
4. Removed SD card and using mini tool s/w made 2nd partition and made it primary and other as logical (Partition was created using FAT32 - 4gb card)
5. Inserted SD card back to phone to copy roof file and link apps to SD card using linktoSD app. But 1ce i inserted SD card it showed memory card crashed.
So pls tell me detailed steps to make it possible. pls pls.. will be a big help.
ADMIN pls help me out by directing to detailed steps.
Regards
Arun
Arun, do the following:
Using Mini tool
Partition 1 will be FAT32 as Primary (For storing your media files)
Partition 2 will be ext3 as Primary (For storing your apps)
Remember, Both partition will be PRIMARY. (None of them will be Logical)
Additional note: Use a card reader, don't go for USB mount.
That should be it.
Q: May I know which ROM are you using with Link2SD?
Use CWM recovery to partition sd card.

Use any partition tools other than the windows native one, basically any that can format your second partition to ext3 or ext 4. Fat32 actually works but not recommended. You should plug in your SD card directly into the computer either by using a card reader or a SD card slot. That will then allow you to partition correctly.
There should be 2 partitions, both primary partitions, make sure that you backup your data before doing any partitioning. Windows will only recognise the first primary partition and mount it. So preferably you should have your data partition in front, and the second partition for your applications. The size of your second partition should be around 512mb.
Once you are done, reboot your phone and launch Link2SD, it should prompt you to ask for the filesystem of your second partition, select accordingly. Then it will begin mounting the scripts, followed by requesting to reboot. After a reboot, open up Link2SD and check the memory status, you should have additional sdext listed there.
Start moving your apps by creating link.
Note: make sure that you have rooted your phone correctly
