Hi. My wife and I both have new Bionics (thank you amazon penny sale!). When we are home we both use wifi. I noticed my data going higher than I expected, so I went to the Verizon site and saw that on the breakdown of data usage it included times which we were home (and on wifi).
I have a rooted phone running Liberty ROM and she is totally stock. We are both running juice defender (if that may have an effect). Does anybody have any thoughts on this? I'll call Verizon if need be, but would rather not go through that hassle.
Thanks
I would start by checking the following. Go to menu, settings, wireless & networks, wi-fi settings, menu, advanced, wi-fi sleep policy. It's possible that your phone is reverting to 3G/4G when the wi-fi connection is "sleeping."

Even though you are on wifi, your data is still running in the background.
What I suggest is to turn off your data while at home and on wifi (don't turn on airplane mode as that cuts off service as well)
Also the settings in Juice Defender might be worth investigation. It seems likely it would turn off wifi if not in use.

Thanks for the quick reply. That option is set to "Never" - which seems to be the best choice. I am going to install the program "My Data Manager" and see what that reports after being home for a bit.
My battery life is great running 5.5.893 without Juice Defender, I used to have it but I got rid of it.
You should try without juice defender and see what happens.

That is what the cheesecake thread is about, correct? I think the biggest killer of my battery is working in a cement walled building - my reception is constantly going in and out when I'm in my office (the basement of said building) so juicedefender's cycling of radio's may be my only choice. I will certainly give it a shot when I have time to read about the method (and fix any screw ups I make)

Hmm, next best thing I guess would be to disable the data connection as Tivo7 suggested if you can't find what's overriding the wi-fi. I use the widgestoid app for this type of stuff. It's similar to the native power control widget but it's much more customizable.

I used the cheesecake version to get to 5.5.893 but I'm pretty sure its released officially though. The leaked version is up to 5.7.893 but 5.5.893 should be official now. If you put everything back to stock 886 with all system files intact and all bloat apps still there, you should be able to go to system updates on your phone and update it directly from verizon.
+1 for widgetsoid btw.

Thanks for the suggestions. There is a widget in Liberty ROM that seems to do the same. I like that juicedefender turns on my wifi automatically at home, so itll be annoying that I have to turn off the data manually, but whatever. I'll get my wife to install a similar widget if it is necessary.

My wife's Bionic is stock, so Ill have her try it. She checked a few nights ago to no avail. I love Liberty (and want to try out Shift3r), so I am reluctant. Seems there are alot of ways to brick the phone when upgrading kernel and radio, so I dont want to jump in too deep without reading stuff first. But thats just the kind of guy I am...
thanks again!

If you would consider going back to stock ROM, this mod is amazing.
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...ry-rest-my-my-mods-included-2.html#post107334
it has the extended power menu as well as toggles built right into your notification pulldown menu. There's a wifi toggle AND a data toggle (which ONLY cuts off data, not service)

If you cant get the 5.5.893 update naturally, you can follow this guide to get there (ignore the name).

Its not. Verizon hasn't pushed any updates to the Bionic yet. 5.5.886 is still "current".

Did a search and it didn't show any results about an app called Juice Defender....so here's a post about it.
Simply put it disables your apn when your phone is asleep then turns it back on when you go to use your phone.
It will really surprise how much it saves. Instead of my phone having 5% battery life left after normal usage in a 13-15 hour day, I now have 30-35% percent left.
I suggest everyone give it a try. It has customizable options and is a nice alternative for those not wanting to double the size of their g1 with an extended battery, but want more from their battery.
Just search "Juice Defender" in market or here's the link to the website: http://www.latedroid.com/2010/01/juicedefender.html

An APN is only required for 3G, so it should still be fine as EDGE/GSM would still be available. Thats the theory anyway.

Exactly I still receive all my calls and texts, and it also has a schedule so it will turn the apn on for a short time every so many minutes. Mine is scheduled for every 30mins my phone is asleep, it turns the apn on for 3 mins. This way I still recieve any updates that require a data connection, such as email or facebook.

The Access Point Name (APN) is required for GPRS/EDGE/3G. It's my job
OT
The reason why the custom ROMs have the "big apn list" is because when you use different carrier sims the APN is typically always different (except a lot of companies use "internet" for their APN). When I went to China last month my G1 automatically knew the APN for China Mobile. China Mobile doesn't have 1700mhz 3G and I used the APN appp to disable internet access so I wouldn't burn through my prepaid minutes. Very nice.
Im not sure this app works. I turned it on, left Hello AIM signed in, sent some IM's to my phone from my PC and my phone was still able to recieve the IM's in sleep mode.
something that I do is that I turn off my gps and my sync option also I only select my sinc for my gmail and not my contacts or my calendar (I unchecg those) I disable the option that allows google to get my location automatically and share my info with google
when Im not using the internet I select the option of 2g networks only
and that saves me ALOT OF BATTERY

Not sure why that's happening, the app definetly works. There's a half second delay when you wake up your phone and you can see the apn being enabled again, as it wasn't there previously. some things to consider:
-You didn't actually activate the app. It's not enough to just install it you have to click on it and select activate.
-You sent the IM's immediately after putting your phone to sleep. It isn't an immediate turn off of the apn, some data may still get through before it completely turns it off.
-Or it maybe a custom ROM problem. Maybe some unique setting is set so your apn behaves differently than the app expects.

This is what I did (and still do) before I installed this app to save battery. Try using the app and you'll see your battery life will almost double.
I can only agree. Works fine for me. Battery lasts considerably longer.

I don't see it on the market?
I see it on developer website as free and has a barcode. I scan it with my barcode scanner and it didn't find on the market either. Is this compatible with cupcake 1.5 ROM or only 1.6 or higher? I like to give this app a try.
Update: OK I looked at the FAQ on dev site and it's not compatible for cupcake ROM. So I guess I have to wait until 2.1 rom comes out.. bummer.

i just searched for it and it is in the android market.
I did a search in the market and found it... it seems to work like the OP said it would... I am still able to receive texts, and I can see the delay when the 3g comes back on. Only time will tell though... If you download the free version, some things are disabled. I might end up getting the paid version later if this really helps.
alright, so i installed it and played around with the settings.
i rebooted my phone and now it doesnt really boot up.
on the lockscreen, i get the 'no service' message. and then it gives me a ton of force closes one right after the other.
so basically, it doesnt allow my phone to boot up. doesnt even get to the part where it gets signal or anything.
im just gonna restore from an earlier backup and see what was wrong. but dunno if this has happened to any of you...
So, I'm not entirely sure about the cause, but my PRL and PRI say not available when I go to the "about" section on my phone. I can't update my PRL because I don't have a PRL, and I've never made any headway trying to figure out how to update my PRI (much less where to find a PRI). I've seen the walkthrough by Avalaunch, but it doesn't make much sense to me and I'd prefer to use a recent PRI rather than one of the three that he mentions.
So... Any idears?
I too would also like to go back to stock PRI, any thoughts??

To the OP: Does the phone still work like a phone? Like, can you call and such? That seems strange....
Nope! I can't make calls or use my service's network. I can turn on WiFi and check email and such. I notice the market won't work when I have WiFi on now though. Airplane mode is "stuck" on, but I think that's just because my regular network isn't available. I've tried reflashing the radio to no avail. The previous PRI was Flipz_01 and hadn't been updated in ages. In the "About" section it says PRI not ready and PRL not available. I've entered the *#*#4636#*#* menu and attempted to turn the radio on there and what I found was that the radio isn't even running. I can't chose a different PRL, turn off the radio, or anything. I'm guessing because the radio wants a PRI before it'll run.
My battery life is incredible though. XD It's on day 4 with no charge, and I've been playing games and enabled WiFi every now and again. The radio uses SO much juice.
I read somewhere that there was a PRI (2.10.etc... ) that'd allow you to use USB tethering. Is there anyway we could compile an update.zip to flash that PRI? I think a lot of people would be thrilled to by that notion...
I'm going to try Avalaunch's walkthrough after memorial day is over, as I doubt Sprint's service center is open to give me my MSL right now. Or if someone could send me the aLogcat.apk (I can't download apps with my phone in this state...), I could hop on it immediately! =D
Which rom are you running?
Rooted or no?
How did all this start?
I would follow avalanch's guide to reseting your PRL/PRI. Only tricky part is getting your MSL. You can get it from calling sprint as he suggests.
Here is a thread on gettings using a market app called "aLogcat"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=689470
Then follow his instructions.
PM me your email and i'll send you alogcat.apk
Fresh Toast 2.1, rooted.
I was running it stable for about 3 days before removing my browser like a dumbass. I didn't realize every ROM I'd used prior was de-odexed and so I tried just pushing a random browser apk back to the phone and it started boot looping. I ran logcat from the command line and found that it was indeed looping because of some error concerning the browser. I then wiped everything and reflashed Fresh Rom 2.1.1 (I have to flash over a stable rom because my phone locks up after a minute or two with an overclocked rom if I don't already have everything configured). I flashed Fresh Toast, entered google & exchange information, and everything was groovy until a few hours later when I noticed I'd not received any calls or texts... It turns out that my PRL and PRI had decided to go on vacation. x.x
I can't get aLogcat because I cant access market until I fix this problem, and I doubt I'll be able to contact sprint till after memorial day. I also just went to their site to see if I could pull up a representative over chat, and I realized that I can't log in... I'm on a friend's plan, so I don't have any account information, so they're probably not going to give me any sort of information. x.x
EDIT: DUMB, I AM! Sorry, didn't see you telling me to PM you for logcat.
Sounds like your phone may just be unstable at overclocked speeds =*(, perhaps the data for your PRL/PRI got corrupted?
I would flash a stock clocked rom, then perform the PRI/PRL reset
Good luck, and the alogcat.apk is in the mail
Yeah yeah! Thank yah much.
That's why I have to flash over a stable rom, so I can clock it down before it locks up. XD
Though I've read that our phones have been clocked over 1 ghz and still tested stable, but I'm pretty sure only a few of them can be clocked so high. I know mine froze more when it was plugged in, I'm guessing because it got hotter faster due to the battery charging. Eh... I'm gonna give Toast another go though, as if I can't handle a higher clock speed then I'll have to get the Evo, and I'd rather be able to wait for my upgrade. ^.^
Well, this has been happening for about two days now. My mobile network will drop out and I have to toggle airplane mode to get it back - only to have it drop about 5 minutes later. It's getting really annoying. I am rooted, but that is it. Nothing is frozen or removed.
Anyone else having this issue? I'm wondering if it's Verizon in my area. I'm going to SBF (FTZ) later tonight to see if it fixes it.
Thanks.
EDIT: Not Verizon. Other work peeps who have Verizon have perfect service.
Does anybody know the *228 way of activating a SIM based phone? I'm guessing it has to do with flashing the radio FTZ file via RSDlite.
Also bumping this. Data seems to drop whenever the screen shuts off. I have zero applications installed that would do this - plus I checked my battery and data settings.
I noticed this also. Sometimes it just drops out and airplane mode will get it to jump back on data. I also have a Thunderbolt which doesn't have this issue so it not a problem with service/towers. I had this issue on the earlier builds of gingerbread Roms for the OG Droid but I'm not sure how the Dev's addressed it. In time I'm sure it will get worked out. There is no way of reactivating 4G LTE phones as they "reactivate" every time you reboot the phone. *228 is strictly for 3G phones as you most likely already know but the only similar solution is a reboot.

This might fall into one of Verizon's list of known bugs for the bionic at release.
"Subcategory: 4G/3G Service - Data Connectivity *Marginal 4G to 3G transition: Loss of data connectivity - The device may display 3G service indication but no data connections are possible. Short term work around: The user will need to power cycle the device or enable/disable Airplane Mode. Planned Resolution: A fix for this issue is under review and will be included in the first post launch maintenance release software for this device. The tentative release date is early November 2011."
Sadly this is a known issue and was told this by a verizon engineer AFTER buying the phone. Data drops and data loses will be part of the ota that is suppose to be released eventually, couldn't give me an eta though. Personally I have had the issue when switching from 3g to 4g, example would be driving to work. Sometimes you need to simply turnoff then on the radio (easiest to use airplane mode widget) to get it to reconnect but in some extreme cases a complete factory reset/wipe is needed. That is what happened in my case. If I would have known that this was going to be the case I probably would have gotten the Dinc2 but oh-well, refuse to pay restocking fee.
This happens all the time for me, usually when I first wake up or when I've been on WiFi for a while with data off. I've gotten around this issue (reliably and without powering down or airplane mode toggling 20 times) by:
1) Disabling Juice Defender (temporarily) so that my data will run even with WiFi 2) Ensuring that data is enabled (in Settings)
3) Dialing *#*#4636#*#*
4) Opening "Phone", then tapping "Turn off Radio" at the bottom of the page
5) Tapping "Turn on Radio" again
6) Hitting Back or Home to get back to your home screen
In just a moment, when the radio comes back up, you should find Mobile Data re-enabled. I know Airplane mode should do the same thing, but I've found this more reliable and quicker.
Edit: Turns out that I was using a bad airplane mode widget. When I started using Widgetsoid, Airplane mode worked fine, no need for debug mode. Ignore the above
I read on another forum that it depends on the phone, so I took mine back to Verizon after multiple episodes of losing data until I restarted the phone. They were reluctant to exchange it and said there was a 90% chance that I'd still lose data due to switching between 3g/4g. The rep said that all of their 4g phones did it. I stuck to my guns and got a replacement. A week later I haven't lost data once. Maybe I've just gotten lucky, maybe it's just coincidence, but my experience certainly seems to back up the conclusion that not all Bionics have the problem.
I actually heard that and did the same thing as well and after receiving the new phone all was great for about 3 days then I had a total loss of data, no 3g or 4g and no way to get it back.. That's when I was told to perform a factory reset. Only way to fix it. So I said screw it and rooted my phone and now keep nandroid backups. I hope you have better luck then me... Cross those fingers.

Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA
I've been having this problem ever since Verizon began pushing out .905 update, almost as they are trying to force me to update.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA
I'm running .905 now and still sticked by this prob...until using this app for every start of my bionic.
With 5.9.901, my Bionic would drop cell data connection without warning several times per day needing either an airplane toggle and/or battery pull to fix.
With 5.9.902, that problem has greatly improved, if not completely disappeared, however a new problem has surfaced. Now, if Wifi is on and connected, I put the Bionic down, when I come back to it and turn the screen on, I see that the wifi icon is gone, and after about 30 seconds or so, wifi comes back on and re-connects.
Is it possible to maybe use the 5.9.901 firmware, but with the cell radio from 5.9.902 and maybe get the "best of both" (i.e. no cell drop, and no wifi drop)?

If you're talking about Settings -> Battery & Data Manager. Battery mode is set to Performance (I never want data off, unless I put it into airplane mode myself). Data Saver is turned off. And the 3 boxes under Data Delivery are checked.
So if you mean something else, please give details.
No offense meant, but I've been dealing with data drop issues, and seeing others report it too, since getting the Bionic. Sorry, maybe I should have mentioned that I've done all those things since getting my Bionic in SEPTEMBER and experiencing the data drop issues. And the drops happen EVEN AFTER A FACTORY RESET, and adjusting the "Battery & Data manager" settings. So I get very frustrated when someone gives what comes across as a very general statement, rather than SPECIFIC details.
Maybe now is a good time to say, the wifi issue I'm experiencing with 5.9.902 happens with my router (WNR3500v2 with either the stock Netgear firmware, or DD-WRT), as well as Linksys WRT54G(v5) with latest linksys firmware. Where as my 3 laptops, my wife's laptop, my Thunderbolt, my BB9780, and our many other wifi enabled smart phones don't have this issue. And the Bionic didn't have it until the 5.9.902 update.
With 5.9.902, the cell data drops seem to have improved/vanished (why I'd like to use its cellular radio codes), where as the WIFI dropping like this is new (doubt its part of the 3G/4G radio code).
Hence the question I originally asked... is it possible to running with 5.9.902 3G/4G radios while using the 5.9.901 code?
As a follow up to myself, incase anyone else might be interested...
Yes, you can run the 901 code with the 902 radio. (revert back to 5.5.893, do the update to .901, then grab the radio.bin from the 5.9.902 FXZ package and flash it via "fasboot flash radio radio.bin"
but NO, it did NOT fix the wifi issue. Wifi still turns off at some point after screen is off, and re-connects moments after screen lights up
This is way beyond me, but could you clarify your phone modifications?
It sounds like you are not fully stock. If not stock could you go there and look for this issue, including only having stock applications installed.

I am 100% stock.
Even flashing the 902 XML image, the problems exist.
Also, not mentioned above, I've made sure that under the wifi settings, (menu button) -> Advanced.. I've made sure it was set to never turn wifi off (which is NOT the default setting)
I've since switched back to my TB and have given up on the Bionic.
So i bought a moto x xt1055 for cheap flashed it to 4.4.2 using RSD lite, unlocked bootloader, and rooted it. today was my first day of use and battery seems to drain itself quicker than i wish. US Cellular isn't in my area so its constantly searching for a signal and draing my battery. i think it was 35+ percent of my battery used by the cell radio.
Now is there a way to disable the radio. I know people use a root explorer to find the .apk or whatever file that is for that purpose and delete it. If so can you tell me the directory to find it. Presumably the emergency calling wont work anymore and i'm fine with that. I have Xposed framework installed but there doesn't seem to be a module for shutting off/disabling the cellular radio. any help appreciated and thanked for.

It is not an app it is just a shortcut to an existing system menu/settings. You can create it with activity launcher or some advanced home/launchers.
Used to be *#*#3646#*#* from dialer in JellyBean. No such dialer shortcuts in 4.4.

The app is nice as I can post the app/shortcut, not so if I created it as a home/shortcut.
You shouldn't need to disable the radio... That isn't usually the drain, it's data. Just disable data in settings and see how you battery is. And your will still get calls and texts, when you have signal... Just no apps can access data while it's off.
You don't need any aps or shortcuts just turn on airplane mode and then enable Wi-Fi GPS etc...
