So i'm travelling to the states for 5 days and someone suggested to me instead of paying for a bunch of roaming add-ons from Bell, i may be better off to unlock my phone and get a sim card on a pay as you go plan. Is this possible and more importantly is it worth it?
Any advice is appreciated
I would personally bite the bullet. It'll probably cost you about $20 to unlock the phone and then you will have to get an AT&T SIM card or pay as you go, probably won't have data on it, etc etc... Last time I went down to the US I spent about $50 on roaming. You're only down there for 5 days, how much time do u want to spend screwing with your phone?
Another thing you could do is turn on airplane mode but keep the wifi turn on, and get a google voice number. Pair that with GrooVe IP, and you have a $5 wi-fi only solution.
The data is what I'm more interested in. My phone will double as my GPS unit, and Google search to find stuff to do. Bell charges 30 bucks for 10 MB.
I'm probably gonna e doing 4-5 trips a year to the states, on a pay as you go I could probably just reload everytime I go down, once I have the sim

Just go to Crackberry, go to the SIM unlocking section, find a site that allows you to unlock for free, then yeah T-Mobile has prepaid service, or maybe AT&T I don't know. Anyway, you get the idea.

would this work with tmobile's 4g/3g network?
Stanley,
AFIAK the 3G frequencies used by T-Mobile is AWS, which the XT860 is not compatible with.
Hey guys sorry just a quick question...
Would the Bell XT860 work on Rogers/Fido once it was unlocked? Has anyone actually tried it?
The reason I ask is because I've read that apparently the Verizon Droid 3 was not compatible with Fido/Rogers even after being unlocked.
Thanks
Bell XT860 definitely works on Rogers when unlocked. I'm using one right now on Rogers. (Just running the Chinese ME863 ROM on it right now). When i was on the stock Bell ROM it also worked fine.

I know nothing about this stuff, but google search tells me that t-mobile uses 1900 MHz GSM and 2100MHz UMTS which are both supported by the xt860. They also support HSPA+
does this not mean the xt860 should work on t-mobile?
The phone would need the phone to support the 1700mhz band as well.

Any success with unlocked XT860 working in the USA and getting 3G?
I read elsewhere, it will work on AT&T 3G?
Anyone, please?
All you should have to do is unlock the SIM slot.

Hey fireeater,
I just ordered an XT883 that will be unlocked and will be used with my T-mobile sim. T-Mobile uses 1700 & 2100 for their 3g while AT&T uses 850/1900. Do you know if the agreement between AT&T and T-mobile will allow the XT883 to get 3g with t-mobile?
Tmobile is refarming their 3g. So you will get 3g by the end of the year.

Hello community,
I couldn't find any info through the Search, so I was hoping someone could let me know if a rooted Nexus One for T-Mobile would work on AT&T. I have the unlocked bootloader, custom recovery image and ROM, the whole 9 yards, but what I don't have is the understanding about GSM networks and how the modifications I made to my phone affect the cross-network compatibility.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Rooting should have no affect on it.
And if its the TMO version of the phone you will only have 2g (edge) on ATT. Seeing as both networks use different frequencies. And the cellular antenna will only be tuned to pick up 3g+ signals from TMOs frequencies.

But AT&T doesn't allow apps to be installed via apk files. So no 3rd party stuff.

You are so painfully incorrect. At&t has no presence on this phone. Get your facts right before you post here.
a T-Mobile Nexus One wont work on at&t's 3G network. Only on edge. Rooting has no effect.

Hello, guys. I just came to USA and I do not how everything works here. I want Droid 3 as you can already know because I am posting here) I can buy this perfect device only locked by verizon but I do not like their plans so I think that AT&T will be good for me.
So as I understand after reading this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172521&page=1 the necessary steps are the following:
1) I buy the phone for example here Droid 3 by motorola .
2) I buy the unlocking code at ebay (the seller is freedomobile).
3) I unlock the device using above code.
4) I buy the AT&T SIM-card.
5) I activate the SIM-card
and everything should work. Is everything correct?
And one more question: will I have the warranty?
How about buying already unlocked phone here http://negrielectronics.com/motorola-xt860-droid-3-850-1900-3g-unlocked.html
Thank you very much.

I am not going to preach about searching or anything because it's quite lame IMO.
However, to answer your question, it won't work. From what I understand, Verizon was able to convince/modify/something with Motorola to prevent GSM networks inside the US to use the phone. I am not sure of the technical reasons specifically, but as far as I know, an unlocked Droid 3 just will not work on US GSM networks.
Besides, I strongly discourage against AT&T. There are reasons why people are willing to pay slightly more for Verizon.
Verizon tinkered with the baseband firmware which blocks all US GSM networks. We cannot replace the firmware unless we have an unlocked bootloader.

The D3 can be flashed to Cricket. The Droid 2 Global, which is also a global, can be flashed to Cricket. The thing is that VZW doesn't want their global phones being used on GSM bands (AT&T/T-Mobile) in the US.

So, the only way to buy the phone in USA is choosing the operator at first and then choosing the phone on the web site of the operator, correct?
And how about already unlocked devices by negrielectronics?
If you can get the proper unlocking code it WILL work on ATT. I know TeamBlackHat(which has a good reputation) sells these codes and has successfully done it.

Have similar question with regards to this problem.
I am using a Droid3 XT862 that has been unlocked, and I'm living in Jamaica.
However for some reason I cannot get the phone to work with one of my local networks. I can get it to work with two of them, namely Digicel and Claro. But I cant get it to work with Lime for some strange reason. I know the phone is capable to operate on the bandwidths which are listed below:
Digicel: GSM 900/1800 MHZ, UMTS 900 MHZ
Lime: GSM 850/1900 MHZ, UMTS 850/1900 MHZ
Claro: GSM 850/1900 MHZ, UMTS 850/1900 MHZ
All of which can work on the phone, and I also believe I shouldn't have the problem because I'm not using a US network where use is firmware locked. But my network of choice is Lime who is the only network that offers 3g locally. When I put in my lime sim it says "invalid sim card/no sim" and when I try to register to the lime network the phone says "Your sim card does not allow a connection to this network".
Any suggestions/solutions?

as has been posted many times on here and in the 3/4g tmo dev radio thread youre not going to get 3/4g unless you live in an area that tmo is using the 1900 frequency and thats out in the northwest... n7000 = 850/1900 freq tmo = 1700/2100 (except a Very select few areas that they use the 1900
as for the quick answer for anyone still wondering what carrier... any that uses the 850/1900 freq... the 1700/2100 ones are out of luck until bedwa or another dev finds a radio to flash to make it work...
well if any one is still looking to get a gnote on t-mobile, maybe you should wait.....the word is it coming out officially on tmobile.....no more hassles on making everything work on tmobile....lol....but its weird...now that i can get it for tmobile in a couple of months.....i want it on verizon/sprint cdma network....lol...does anybody know if its coming out on a cdma network?.....ive read about it coming out on cdma as the galaxy journal but when?...or the real question is....is it coming out on cdma at all?....lol..
This is correct, but woefully incomplete.
TMO is limited to EDGE with the Note given incompatible 3G wireless bands, so while it will "work", it will be a dog on data.
The only practical carriers for the Note in the USA are Straightalk and ATT

In the OP's case, a discussion as to whether the phone is SIM locked or unlocked on the One is completely moot because the Sprint variant of the device does not possess the GSM or UMTS/WCDMA frequency bands needed to operate in most of the Americas, including the United States. It only does GSM 900/1800 and UMTS 2100. In other words, even if it was unlocked for other companies' US GSM or UMTS SIM cards it wouldn't be able to get any signal in the US, or for that matter, anywhere in most of North, Central, or South America or in other parts of the world where the GSM or UMTS 850 or 1900 MHz bands are used.

According to this article, which I have linked several times on here in response to this question, the ONE on Sprint most likely has GSM 900/1800mhz capability. Which is the GSM most all of the world uses except for the US. That is why it is a "World Phone."

Even if it was sim unlocked it wont work. Its a hardware limitation, not a software one. It cant run on the frequencies that North America uses for GSM.
It does run frequencies that we run here in the us. It supports 1900 and 2100 utms. 850 and 900 gsm. Both are used here in the us by at&t and t-mobile.
