[Q] Permanent root for Droid 3 - Motorola Droid 3

I know that with Droid Bionic the permanent root has been developed. I am wondering if I can use the same method on my D3 without any issues.

iIf your referring to editing loadpreinstalls.sh it should work the update doesn't verify that file, can't find it in the script anyway. ota root keeper works too

that's the one I meant actually, not sure if it's patched yet but that will work with droid 3.

Doesn't the bionic use the D3 root method? #ridingourdevwave

Except I didn't have a double negative. What he posted makes no sense, and I posted exactly what I meant to say.
Simple: dotson assumed there was a comma where there wasn't.
Original: "No current root methods work on the Droid 3."
What dotson (mis-)read: "No, current root methods work on the Droid 3."
Thus he assumed he meant to say "No, current root methods don't work on the Droid 3."

From y limited understanding Gingerbreak works with 2.3.3, however the D3 comes stock with 2.3.4, which has all known exploits closed. So we just have to wait until more are found, with code as complex as an OS there's always some to be had.

Let's hope.
It should be even easier once the first OTA comes out, seeing how the moto devs access the OS is very likely to reveal an exploit, or at least point us in the right direction.

[Guide] root and unbrick [UPDATED 6/14/2013]

This is an updated (and short) version of my guide for rooting and/or unbricking your DROID 3. This method works on Motorola phones running Android OS 2.3.4 or earlier. If you have a version of MotoBlur/Android on your DROID 3 that isn't compatible with this version, you can use the unbrick method to return your DROID 3 to MotoBlur 5.6.890 Verizon OTA first.
All instructions and downloads are linked from my website at:
www.psouza4.com/DROID3
UPDATE 9/1/2011 1.03: completely re-written, includes one-click root and unroot for practically all Motorola Gingerbread devices, /system/app fix & restore, and ADB temp root. DROID 3 fixes work for build 5.5.959 (stock) and 5.6.890 (late August OTA update).
UPDATE 9/8/2011 1.05: lots of logic testing for fixing bad root attempts/root carry-over's for DROID X, DROID 2 Global, and other devices. Some messages were made clearer, and unrooting is now open to other devices (/system/app restore optional).
UPDATE 7/8/2012 1.08: new links for the system restore features
UPDATE 6/14/2013 1.09: guide re-written, files re-uploaded, everything should be working again (I removed /system/app restore feature since it wasn't reliable and now unnecessary with unbrick/restore methods)
Thanks! That was dead easy and i'm happy that i still have root after rebooting a couple of times.
I assume that if i do a factory wipe, I will have to use this root method again, right?

No, you will lose superuser.apk which can be re-installed from the market as it is wiped when the /data partition is formatted, but su and busybox are installed in /system/xbin and will not be removed during a factory reset, so it will survive a factory reset (but you will just need to reinstall superuser).
oki doki.... i saw another thread on unrooting the phone and if i have to exchange it, i'll experiment there

I backed up my old Blur-Camera.apk and Blur-Camera.odex to my SD card. Extracted the files from the provided zip to /system/app and fixed permissions to be rw-r--r--. Rebooted, and its' still not showing up. I reverted back to my old camera for now until someone else gets it working.

You're a fool. I've cheesecaked all the way to 5.7. The kernel blocks webtop at some point in the upgrade path. The only way to keep webtop (that has been found) is to go directly from 886 and cheesecake to 5.7, one big jump. If he didn't do that, then this is crucial information in obtaining webtop back for us who did the incremental updates.
Sorry there isn't a search button to help your ignorance and lack of knowledge.
Also, show me one spot in this thread where he listed his upgrade path.

[OTA LEAK] VZW Droid 3 Update 5.7.894 From Staging Server

Hi Guys,
As promised here is the actual OTA leak .zip pulled from a staging server on 11/03. This needs to be installed via your STOCK RECOVERY, this doesn't work in Safestrap or Koush's CWRecovery.
[ WARNING: I want to repeat my earlier warning that if you plan on installing this: HAVE A ROOT KEEPER INSTALLED (mount_ext3.sh / loadpreinstall.sh modified to set suid on the su binary on boot). CURRENT 1-CLICK ROOT WILL NOT WORK. If you search the Bionic boards there are many users asking for help where they lost root applying a similar OTA leak like this one for their phones. I would hate for the D3 community to be in a similar situation. ]
** I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ILL EFFECTS OF THIS OTA LEAK OR IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE -- WHEN IN DOUBT, DON'T USE THIS **
** And, I know that the file name is our current version. It's something Verizon does with the patch filenames where they use the version of the OS that it applies to.
Details of the update:
BUILD ID: 5.5.1_84_D3G-64
BUILD DATE: Mon Oct 31 11:31:36 CDT 2011
BUILD VERSION FULL: Blur_Version.5.7.894.XT862.Verizon.en.US
BASEBAND VERSION: N_03.18.2EP
Download Link: http://www.mediafire.com/?x6ltlt51aa98hgw
md5sum: 93f535d986b94a810a00530ea722ea69
[ Edit 11/07: added the baseband version ]
Thank you for sharing this.
Do the fastboot files that we have still work after applying this? My main concern is that it could replace the signing key making it impossible to downgrade to a rootable version.
wonder why the name of file you update is 5.6.890?

Probably, not 100% sure but i think you need to be on motoblur fully bloated. Make sure you do a forever root before you update tho cause word is the moto/vzw have patched the exploit.

It should be if its 2.3.5. Im assuming the cam is like the one in the dx2 ATRIX port. If so its good stuff the continuous focus is much faster, and has other focus options. Then we can add the camera tweaks that are already out there.
This is still 2.3.4 btw.

i think it because you will had root before JB update. I flash FXZ ICS and forget about root, and now i can't keep root any way.
That "Easy Root Komplete" tool found on this page uses the famed MotoChopper exploit. I just FXZ'd my Bionic to 4.1.2 and tried Motochopper on it. It managed to install Superuser but it couldn't push in the su binary so it basically failed. I tried MotoChopper 3 times in a row but root was never actually achieved unfortunately.
Save yourself the effort. Motochopper only works on snapdragon based moto phones... For which the bionic is not.

So far there are no known Bionic JB root exploits. I was told a few days ago that the Bionic Gods are looking into maybe repurposing one of the RAZR JB exploits but I've not seen or heard anything since. DJRBliss has quit so this puts us Bionic owners in a very bad position. We can HOPE an exploit is found but I wouldn't expect it.
I would go as far to say that if it happens it will be a repurposing based on RAZR Blade. The chances aren't superb, but at least conceivable.

I think the samba share exploit has the most promise, actually. I don't know if our smart actions would allow a razr blade style exploit.
I can attest to the fact that this exploit does not work.

Don't work anything what i try to do...just can't mount /system in rw.
Have little idea. We have locked bootloader, but preinstall.img not signed. I think must be something in this folder what work with su permissions, and if we moded preinstall.img, we can flash it and run script for mount /system in rw mode.

I hope you are right! Unfortunately it's all a bit beyond my depth. I dunno why motorola is such a stick inthe mud, especially after Google bought them. All the Google devices have been easy to root and mod (Nexus series), but it's probable that since this is an older device without a gigantic user base, it just isn't getting attention, as evidenced by it not getting the GSM unlock that other phones with the same chipset got.
So sad. Lovely phone, crippled by the manufacturer from achieving it's full potential.
There's still hope though. Meantime, I'm sticking with ICS. LiquidSmooth and Eclipse 1.3 roms work exceedingly well, and root access lets me run all the stuff I want to.
