I sent my SGS I9000M back to Bell for repair (boot loop). It came back with Gingerbread 2.3.3. and network locked. I have the Freeze Code and the Network Control Key from when I first got the SGS with Eclair running. Can I use the same Network Control Key to unlock it now? If the code doesn't work will it freeze the phone?
Thanks.
Are you sure they gave you the same phone back?
Do the IMEI numbers match (one that you sent in vs the one you have now) or are they different?...

Same thing happened to me, I got it back after an internal SD failure and it was locked again. Just root and follow this thread to unlock if you don't feel like taking the risk with the network control key code: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761045

They gave me the same phone back. The IMEI number is the same as before. And the unit is the same as before, at least on the outside, because I marked the unit at different places before giving it to them for repair. When I gave them the phone they said everything in it will be wiped out.
You think the unlock code is unique to the IMEI? Once it's there it will stay?

I followed this post to get the Unfreeze and Unlock Codes in the first place when the phone was running on Eclair. I used the "Generate Unlock Windows.zip" file. But it doesn't work this time because the phone is running on Gingerbread now.
Just that at this point I would want to stay away from rooting the phone again. Because I would rather not having to apply any lagfix. I believe lagfix is what screwed up my phone in the first place. I would root it again only after I know there will not be any lag if I unroot it afterwards. Because I would root it only to replace one font file in it.
Does anyone know if unrooting the phone will make the lag issue go away?
Thanks.
anyone know?
I was talking about the nv_bin method in the thread, not the unlock code method. For the nv_bin method you'd need to be rooted, but honestly rooting your phone just gives you superuser (admin) privileges and should not hinder the speed of your phone.
As for the lag, you can also just use Chainfire's ext4 utility to apply the lag fix after you root the phone if you feel the need to.

since you asked this questions, do you believe if it's the same IMEI, the unlock code is the same?

Thanks,

I believe it will but you will or should be able to unlock again
Is there any application i can use to easily unlock it? Or can I just copy my current nv_data.bin and then copy it back on and it will unlock?
Thanks,

im hearing all this "its easy to get an unlock code for the Galaxy S" but the guide isnt that clear to me and i dont want to risk bricking my galaxy s while rooting it.
So would i just be able to buy an unlock code instead, i came across one site that was recommnded on these forums but it did not list the Galaxy S on there.
So does anybody know if i could buy an unlock code that i can just enter into my phone without any rooting and stuff? and where could i buy one?
thankss
edit: even if somebody on this forum could get a code for me, they would obviously need to have some kind of rep on here though, not just somebody with 20 posts
There's an app out there for the galaxy s. You don't even need to root your phone. Its called "SGS UNLOCK" if I'm not mistaken. Worked great on mine.

Ive tried that but it says no code found. It says that the methods with roots are much more sucessful
i would just go ahead and root my phone but it sounds risky and i dont know where i would start with rooting it. Where is the guide on here?
Well i rooted the phone myself and i downloaded the sgs unlock pro app that seems to be working for everybody but i just crashes for me
this sucks
You tried the unlock-service on "samfirmware"?
I didn't test it but maybe this works.

Just download one click root to your computer and plug your phone to the computer with debugging on and than click root. Thats it.
Buy the pro version of sgs unlock app from market and you are done. Its that easy.

I dont see what i couldve done wrong. I didnt have an sd card in the phone and i had debugging on.
thanks anyway. So i cant just go ahead and buy a code like the good old days?
I have my phone unlocked.but my IMEI is corrupted but is working good so far I have network and I havE a backup of my efs folder on my pc. everytime I try to replace it with root explorer I overwrite the efs folder but It doesnt, how can I replace my original efs folder instead of my current efs folder which is corrupted????

how did you unlock it?
did you use an app?
does that app have the option to restore original?
probably does...
yes I used helroz app and I have two backups the original one and the helroz app backup but for some reason I paste my efs backup using root explorer but it doesnt overwrite it instead i have two folders with the same name.

well if you read the words in the app
the one .bak ISNT a backup. it is a necessary system file.
it says so in the app.
also you cant replace the efs backup like that with root explorer.
it doesnt work like that.
the app from herloz
has an option to restore your original files and re-lock the phone
USE IT!!
how do i know???
i re-wrote the english translation for him~!
so i relock my phone and i get my imei back?? I need it unlock because I use a diferent sim not att. what if I flash stock using odin??? I need my phone unlocked 'cause I dont live in the USA!!!

well re-locking the phone will restore your backup!
then re-unlock it using the PROPER code method. not the backdoor file swap method.
use [APP]SuperOneClick v1.9.1
to get the unlock code. (second tab in program says "captivate")
although that app didnt change my imei when i used it months ago, but had no choice the rogers captivates dont have the code stored in the phone, you must get it from rogers. but the att phones have the code hidden inside. it can be found and used.
i restore my backup and nothing still unlocked and corrupted IMeI

well every once and a while your network will check imei s and you will just stop working... might want to check out herloz thread.. ask for help,
he knows more about the imeis than most of us here.
we dont mess with em unless we need to. lol

I like your description of the 1st method TR, but on the ATT Cappy refurb I got that was upgrade imaged at the factory, OneClick & SGS Unlock only pulled fffff.
Two I earlier upgraded myself both responded to SGS Unlock as did the post upgrade new phone they sent me that probably never saw 2.1. On number 4 of the 4 I've handled, backdoor was the only way.
cool good to know about the refurbs.
i got fffff as well did the switch with the app and its held up through rom flashes att one click rogers stocks gingerbread. still unlocked and correct imei. older version of app though..
though every odd person it happens to. it has happened before in his thread.

It really did! Or at least something happened because I was getting the "Emergency Calls Only" sign, and wasn't able to place any calls.
What I ended up doing is I moved the backup of the files that the app modified to the internal SD card, Re-locked and unlocked again using the app and now it works again. *phew*
I was scared for a few hours there

I had the same problem today. I was accused of having a stolen phone (same captivate I have had for 2 years, bought from AT&T store). Then I was told that someone reported my phone stolen. Then I was told that I put my SIM in an iPhone. Then I was told that I was using a stolen pre-pay phone. Finally, I was told that there was some mistake, and my phone might be fixed within 24 hours. Total call time was over 3 hours. Still not working. When I try to make a call, I get "sorry, this device has been blocked". AT&T's crack team is on it though.
I believe it is from the "generic" IMEI that my ROM is reporting (IMEI ends in 640000). I have been looking for ways to restore my IMEI to the correct one, but all I am finding is information about how it is a class C felony in the US to change an IMEI number.

Did you flash an ICS ROM? If you did, you might want to check your internal SD and look for a folder named "backup". It contains a backup copy of your "efs" folder. Copy everything from that folder and paste everything to your "/efs" folder. Reboot your phone, fix permission and you should be good.

So I was on the the phone with at&t and couldn't figure it out. about 3 hours later i got a text on my wife's phone that it was restored. So all is good now. They also thought it was an Iphone and stolen.

Same story I was getting. This will happen to you again (I have been through it twice). The IMEI ending in 640000 is not a valid IMEI, and it is on the blacklist. AT&T is not the only carrier now disabling access for having IMEI's that are reported as stolen.
To restore your IMEI, follow the instructions from Nick0703.

I can't seem to find a backup folder or /efs folder. is it inside another folder i am not seeing?
It may be in the /mnt/sdcard depending on the app you are using for file explorer.

Yeah it's "/mnt/sdcard" (I use Root Explorer). Then look for the "backup" folder.

This happened on my GS2. I had several EFS backups, but none of them successfully restored. I ended up sending it to Samsung for warranty repair.
That's weird, I successfully used that IMEI for a day after flashing ICS with no problems. Usually you can fix it by flashing to stock as long as there weren't changes to efs.

hello, my imei done the exact thing its the same as in software as under the battery, but Samsung sees the imei as a Samsung focus which is sgh-i917 which is a windows 7 phone the phone that I have even kies sees it as Samsung galaxy s 4g sght959v android phone. would you have any I dea how to fix this? thanks just for reading, or stir me to a person that might know many thanks
my imei is totally blank. been fine and bam it just went after i rebooted my phone. was using a custom rom but have been on that rom for 4-5 monthsso i dont understand the issue. dealt with it at my carrier's live chat and they simply said its a stolen phone but ive had this phone well ocer 2-3 years! now im using it without network coverage etc. bullsh*t.
There is a way to restore IMEI. The easiest one is backup your data, flash stock GB ROM (use Odin one-click files), verify IMEI is back, update OS to whatever you like, restore your data. Odin one-click back to stock files are in Android Development section, look at the Sticky threads. Read this Guide to update the OS to latest stable CyanogenMod (CM10.1.3 Android 4.2.2 based). Lost IMEI is common issue with Captivate, but it's easy to fix.
