How does your power key performs? I mean mine responds only when hard pressed or pressed by the right side part of it.
I asked this because all my LG devices have these pretty hard to press hardware keys in contrast to my SE devices.
Comes on at any sign of a click, can do far left, far right etc. Button itself is perfect.
How old is your phone? Worn out over time a possibility ?
there's a mod that lets you wake via volume buttons if you're into that.

can u tell me what mod. u mean exactly? any instructions?
Use widgetlocker and in use easy-wake mode. It lets you wake up the phone with any hardware button.

Or in case you're using CM or MIUI, theres an option to enable that in the settings menu.

I know there are a few in the market made just for that...
Sorry I don't recall what the names were.
Just spend some time searching in the market.
Widgetsoid 2.x
It's a custom power control widget. Has support for lots of things like the aforementioned shutdown/reboot, brightness control, mobile network toggle, flashlight mode, usb mass storage mode, and has some themeable elements.
I'm pretty sure Widgetsoid has the ability to reboot, power down, reboot to recovery, etc. It doesn't use the menu though.
+1 for Widgetoids. Works great.
You can choose which power off options to include.
Um, if you lost your power on/off button, how are you going to turn the phone back on?

I didn't physically lose the power button. I just lost it while the phone is on. I have to physically pull the battery to turn it off or to go into recovery.

Hey,
I'm on 2.3.3 stock and seems like my power button will fail soon - so I'm asking you guys - what's the simplest method to make my N1 wake by pressing the trackball?
Is there any app?
Is there other method to do this and remain on stock rom?
Thanks for helping me out!
Any unlock?
Sorry?
I want to wake it to the unlock screen (I'm not using an app for that and neither the pattern feature)
I'm rooted, if you mean that
Any unlock is an app. I used to use it when I was on other ROMs...now I'm back to Enomther's ROM which lets you disable the screen lock so when you hit the volume buttons or trackball the phone wakes up (and it's the only one out of the different ROMs I've tried, including Cyanogen..which doesn't just stop working after 20 minutes).
Every rom I have ever used that has trackball wake it has worked and keeps on working.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
umm just install cyan 7 or similar ROMs. they all have trackball wake. i havent touched my power button in a long time cause i dont feel like it failing on me...
I need to remain stock as possible.
So any suggestion in that way?

Didn't you try AnyUnlock from the market? It's free, and I think it works on non-rooted phones.

Anyunlock doesn't do trackball wake on gingerbread, only volume buttons.

No Lock by BoD from Market: https://market.android.com/details?id=org.jraf.android.nolock&feature=search_result
Google has removed the keypress event for trackball when the screen is off, so there is virtually no way to change unless the underlying framework is rewritten.
So, if you really want TB WAKE, you can:
1. wait for Google to add back to keypress event for TB when screen is off, so the app dev can bring back this function
2. switch to ASOP ROMs, most of them has tweaked the framework for TB Wake
3. fall back to Froyo-based ROMs.
I would recommend you to try CM7, it is not perfect.
Yet, it is stable enough for daily use, and it comes with some handy features.
Wow I just noticed that. I've been using No Lock forever but still used the power button to wake the phone. Using it mainly to avoid the extra swype needed at the lock screen but just tried the track ball. No go. Darn.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
Well although the track ball no longer wakes up the phone using No Lock the volume buttons still do, so at least if the power button fails, you can still wake it up with the volume buttons.

really the best option is to use cyan 7. it is basically stock, or AOSP rather, and smooth as butter and better battery life and all. and you get trackball wake. no downsides.

i dont think its possible to even remap keys i have tried and failed...
what happens is that when our phone goes in sleep mode... the softkeys get disabled.

The volumes key still are hard key. As we used it in cwm recovery I think it could be done by mod.

It would seem that the closer I get to buying my SGS III, the more my cappy starts to fall apart.
Recently the power button has been on the fritz, pressing itself and opening up the power menu at random intervals as well as turning my screen on and off whenever it damn well feels like it. It's infuriating to say the least.
Is there any way to completely disable the power button so I can just use workarounds until I get my SGS III? All of the searching I've done thus far has turned up nada.
Also, yes I have taken my phone out and cleaned it with compressed air and that didn't do a damn thing. I'm pretty sure I've knocked the connection loose from all of the abuse I've given it over the last year or so.

Go to /system/usr/keylayouts/aries- keypad.kl
And erase the line with key 116 power in it, and from there you can rename any key the new power button and then reboot. I just had to do this to my phone as well I feel your pain!

Awesome. Can I still use the key combo to get into recovery and boot my phone with the power button after I make the change?
And if I rename the search key to power button do I leave it as virtual or change it to wake?
Should it be:
Key 217 Power Virtual
Or
Key 217 Power Wake
I just want to get the syntax right the first time around. Again, you're awesome and thanks a ton!
Edit:
Got the power button remapped to the search key. Problem with that though, is that I forgot the capacitive keys don't register touch when the screen is off lol. Derp.
Edit2:
Went ahead and mapped it to a volume key. Thanks again for saving my sanity!

No problem. I don't know what rom you run but if you have the volume awake feature you can use the volumes to wake the phone and then use the search "power" button to lock and reboot and stuff.
Also this remap only applies once android has booted up so it has no affect on when in recovery or download or off anything like that.

Yeah im on AOKP, so I was going to use it like you described until I read somewhere that it changed the key used to boot up and get into recovery. I didn't want to take the chance of having to figure out how to boot my phone without a power button.

You could go to setting->display->volume key wakes up phone option. If youre worried about not being able to get into recovery, download rom manager if you dont already have it. There is an option to do several things like booting into recovery, backup roms, partition SD card, fix permissions, etc. What about that?

Thanks for the reply. I actually had that option enabled already when I was using the search key as a power button. Turns out though, that the volume keys dont wake the phone if you're playing music (which is like half of the time I have my phone on me outside of work lol). In the end, im just using the volume down key as a power button and its working well for me so far. If I need to get into recovery I can still use the power menu. As for not being able to power up the phone when it was bound to the search key, it's now turning on the moment the battery is inserted, so no worries there anymore ;P

After a year of use, the unlock button is dead, I've been using Smart screen on for now, but I want to know if I can remap the useless G button to unlock or turn on/off the phone
I also tried opening it to clean it, but the screws are too tight

If you're not on gingerbread, then you don't have this bug. This bug doesn't allow waking up the phone after a few minutes of deep sleep by G button.
But the g buttons for waking the phone works well in CM10/ICS. (of coure you have to remap it)
How do I do it? The instructions say I have to modify a file, but it's not where it's supposed to be
try one thing
i had this with cm10 and v30b
flash zeus and it will be fine
it's deep sleep
If you are using Cm10 go in settings and set a volume rockers wake.Nothing else, just settings.
