I've successfully rooted my phone thanks to SuperOneClick, but am not able to figure out how to flash the recovery so that I can use ROM Manager.
I have a stock KB1 image, on an I897 Captivate from AT&T. I'm trying to get the recovery image (currently 3e) set so that I can bypass the signature check, which is what I keep running into.
I installed ROM Manager (the free one, at least until pay day) and tried to use that to flash CWM recovery. Every time I boot into recovery, I run into the confounded signature check.
I have a Superuser app installed from the Market, version 3.0.6(40) and su binary ver 2.3.1-ef.
I'm not typically a dunce, since I've been able to install and run a Linux server at home more than once. But this has got me stumped.
Please let me know what additional information I might need to provide to target guidance.
Read this. Please look at stickies and/or use the search function.
On a personal note, don't waste time on Rom Manager. Its trash for SGS line.
I hadn't seen that list previously. I spent 4 hours last night and three hours today reading stickies and stumbling through search results. That guide for fixing recovery might just be the answer I was looking for.
Is there a different "ROM manager" app that you recommend, or just bare-backing it (which I'm not afraid to do, either)?
Don't bother with it. IMO if you like stock froyo, I recommend just flashing Cognition 4.x.x. Based on KB2 stock looking, but tweaked for speed. CWM is easiest achieved by flashing a kernel with it baked in it.
to skip the recovery crap and rooting and everything else....
take phone out of box. (done)
download and run odin3 flashing util 1.8x Odin3v1.85.zip
boot phone into download mode
flash ginberbread bootloaders http://www.multiupload.com/QQ3LFSRBMD
reboot into download mode
flash custom kernel with CWM built-in pick one in dev section. ANY NOT miui/cm7 kernel in dev section.
reboot into recovery (cwm now!!)
mounts / usb/ copy rom to phone (if not on sdcard already can be done any time before)
cwm flash rom.
** cwm2 kernel for eclair/froyo roms & cwm3/4/5 kernel for gingerbread up
If you goal is to flash a new rom then TRusselo is right. Easier to just flash a kernel with CWM.
Rooted via super 1click and was unable to get clockwork recovery to load said it flashed but would only boot default recovery, soft bricked it 3 times then straight busted it getting the forced upload key press thing had to use USB jig to get download then used Odin to repair firmware some how 3g got switched off. Anyone got any ideas on how to switch back on my guess is key pad access but don't know the code amorphous smart apn from market but don't have the phone yet to try it my friend is gonna bring it this weekend just wanted to find out the best way to switch it back on before I get it back because grs gonna be there this time and I don't want to make him nervous or have him think I'm gonba mess up his phone
Sent from my Evo Running CM7
Stop flashing and read the stickies. If you tried using rom manager or update.zip it wont work unless you fix the 3e recovery issue. Its easier to flash a kernel with CWM baked in to it. For example if you are on froyo Cognition 4.x.x (search for it) kernel should work just fine.

My brother rooted his Captivate 6 months ago or more. He kept the stock ROM, and now would like to try a custom ROM. Unfortunately, he doesn't remember much about what he did. He said he downloaded a program, plugged in his phone, and it rooted him.
I assumed that I should be able to boot into recovery and flash a ROM from there. I looked up how to boot into recovery, and tried the 'hold down vol/up and power on' approach. Instead of a recovery menu, it goes directly to some kind of update screen with this text:
movi-check start..!!
... <lines removed>
install default apk files please wait
I've searched for these lines, and cannot find why this is coming up. I did find that this should have ended with a message that the install finished, but after leaving it for 10 minutes, it seemed to just reboot. Perhaps the message did come up, and then it immediately rebooted.
Does anyone know why the phone is in this state where there is no recovery menu? If I install ROM Manager and flash ClockworkMod is that likely to work and not cause harm?
Need a little more info... is it stock 2.1 or 2.2? If it's Froyo 2.2 then the stock recovery is tricky to get around if you're new to flashing or modding.

Thanks. It is stock 2.2.
I am not new to flashing, and I'm comfortable with adb and other tools. I'm just not familiar with the Samsung Captivate.
Is the screen that comes up with 'movi_check' the stock recovery? it appears to be automatically trying to update something.
Probably just be easier to use Odin to flash stock 2.1 and root and get recovery on it. Then you can flash any (2.2) ROM you want on it, or you could use Odin or Heimdall to flash Gingerbread onto it (recommended). There are tutorials all in the development section.

If its a newer build it wont like 2.1 (alot of newer builds bootloop with 2.1). If your captivate is one of the newer builds and has the 3e recovery here is a guide to get past it.
As to flashing Gb you will need GB bootloaders wich carries risk. Please READ on how too and risk that may happen. Its a small risk but you can hard brick the phone if you mess up bootloaders or if the booloader fails to flash.
Another option is flashing KB1 2.2 froyo and using Desing Gear's Cog 4.x.x kernel. You will have clock work mod. There's a ton of ways to do it most of wich are in the forums already so search and if you have doubts ask

It crossed my mind that newer builds wouldn't like 2.1, but I wasn't 100%, that's why I recommended going to GB. Just reading the instructions a few times and being prepared the risk is very low to hard brick. Just make sure to know exactly what you're doing when you choose which files for the primary and secondary boot loaders.
But said person is asking info on something as simple as rooting, Hence there are easier less evasive ways to get past 3e.

Just to clarify, I'm not asking about rooting, but about flashing and the recovery console. I'm an EVO user, and I just don't know the idiosyncrasies of the Captivate.
Am I correct that the messages I get when trying to go to recovery (starting with movi_check start) are normal, and that after those messages I should get the recovery console? If so, it seems to be stuck on the "install default apk files please wait" step, as this doesn't seem to complete.
I do see the steps on how to flash, and can follow them carefully, but since I am not getting the recovery console, I am not sure what might be wrong.

Thanks for your help. I do understand I can't flash with stock recovery.
Both the 'Read BEFORE flashing' and the 'How to Install a custom ROM' guides instruct to install clockwork mod. I am aware that installing a new recovery needs to be done before flashing on probably any device.
I guess my primary confusion was whether the 'movi_check start' verbage is normal to see when I am trying to go to Recovery before installing Clockwork. Another google search finally found a hit that says it is normal to see this. I'm still not clear whether I should be concerned that it hangs on the "install default apk files" step.
Since it hangs, I don't ever get any kind of recovery menu, so it wasn't obvious to me that I was actually in the stock recovery.
Assuming this doesn't indicate any issues, I'll proceed with the instructions and all should be well.
Well I hope you are able to work it out. ^^
I used SuperOneClick to root my phone, and now I'm looking through the Captivate Guide to see what else I can do with an unrooted phone. I started with Rom Manager.
So I clicked "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery," and it was fine. I select my phone (Galaxy S - Captivate, not the Captivate MTD). I pressed "Backup Current ROM," but when I press "Okay," it restarts my phone to the blue menu. So I press "reset phone now," and I try to start from the beginning again. According to the guide, it says to restart it until it works. It's rebooting each time instead with no change. When I go to manage and restore backups, nothing is listed.
When I load up Rom Manager, under "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery," it just says
"Current recovery: Clockwork mod 2.5.1.2
Latest Recovery: Clockwork mod 2.5.1.2"
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I'm using stock 2.2 Froyo and GO Launcher with Cartoon Theme (if that matters).
I've already tried TRusselo's method regarding the 3e issue with stock 2.2 phones: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052991
Do I need SGS Kernel Flasher? If so, what kernel do I need?
/EDIT: Check my post 5 for my latest issue.
Why not just flash a KB1 kernel with cwm in it? I know Desing Gears cog 4.x.x kernels works, and probably eXistZ's kb1 kernel as well. They have cwm cooked in the + few other things like Voodoo, etc.
Also I believe your supposed to click install package as well. I could be wrong since its been a long while since I've used that method.

I'm much too amateur with phones to do that.
The only reason I decided to finally root my phone was because my warranty is up, and because I found TheUnlocker's youtube account + Captivate guide. I figured with step-by-step instructions, there's no way I could screw up. Boy, was I wrong.

I plan to use Cyanogenmod 7 eventually. The reason I haven't flashed a ROM is because I'm not 100% sure how yet. That's why I'm taking lots of small steps.
A lot of these ROMs also mention Odin, which I didn't use. I used SuperOneClick.
I went online and tried to flash my phone according to this guy's steps:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KvCxdYZ0nk
Okay, so even though I followed all of his steps, I get to the part where I'm supposed to find the MIUI file in my SD card, and it doesn't exist... even though I transferred it over. How come my phone doesn't recognize it? Phone is barely functional at the moment after I flashed it back to 2.1, and I'm encountering a lot of lag/bugs. If I plug in my phone to my computer without Debugging on, it fails to download drivers.
Does anyone know the best fix out of this situation?
I have an AT&T Captivate with the official 2.2 on it. I'm rooted, but that's as far as I've gone with it. I'd like to try out this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760
From what I understand, I need to flash Clockwork Recovery for Captivate (MTD). But ROM Manager doesn't seem to be able to do that; it asks me if I have it already, which seems to mean that I'm supposed to get it from another source. I tried ignoring the warning as the thread I linked to says, but it just reboots into Samsung's recovery.
Where exactly can I find this recovery on my own?
Noo you just need clockwork recovery thats it. It will do the rest. Mind you this rom is in early dev, and I wouldn't recommend it for ppl that are starting out. I would recommend I9000 Gb ports or I897 leaks. Or a more stable GB AOSP like nightlies or the stable release from CyanogenMod team.
i totally agree with bass. go with something like cm7 or a leaked beta. in rom manager, when it asks if you have it already, say no, so you can install it. if you check my created threads i have a basic tool that will help you get to a leaked official captivate gngerbread rom as well as CWM. since you are on froyo you will need to use the one with the boot loaders so make sure you have a good battery charge. trust me, i speak from experience, its well worth the time it takes to wait for the charge. otherwise you end up with $500 paperweight.
I'm kinda set on that ICS one I linked to.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202673
if I start with that, can I then reboot into recovery and install the ICS rom I linked to?
You don't know how to use cwm or to root yet you want to try a rom in early dev that might give you a TON of issues. Don't get me wrong Im running build 10 and apart from random lag and under par battery life its been acting fine. Just saying you should be able to figure it out if you are thinking about that specific rom.
The Captivate is the only one that seems to require a special recovery for Cyanogen ROMs from what I understand. I want to make sure I'm doing this right.
and yes, I'd like to start with that ROM.
...actually, did you even read my post at all? I say right in the beginning I'm rooted, but you say that I don't know how to root?
Easy brother bass was not trying to low blow here. He was just making an observation from past experience. The early dev roms can be tricky little buggers to get loaded and running right. I too speak from experience I have had some nasty boot loops and or soft brick of my phone. I don't know about your past but if this is your first custom rom flash you may want to practice a bit before taking on an early stage rom.

I agree, you should start off with something more stable to get used to flashing. The other day when build 10 came out I flashed just like I have been doing by performing a Dalvik and cache wipe then flashing the ROM and I ended up not getting past the splash screen. I had to take the phone back to stock, flash CM7 and then go back to ICS. For some reason in the process I lost 3 button combo so I had to use the ADB for reboots.
The point is take some time and learn from the beginning, don't just jump right in to the middle it will make your life easier in the long run.

Sorry, it's just weird for him to say "you don't even know how to root" when that's the first thing I said about my phone...
I guess you've got a point. Maybe I'll start with something else.
If I wanted to start with CM7, could I start with this recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202673
I would recommend ODIN, its much much easier. First off does your phone 3 button combos work? If not I would recommend flashing a 1 click GB rom w/ bootloaders. and then use a kernel like Boog's to flash cwm. If your 3 button works just flash any kernel with cwm and flash from that. In both cases make sure you have all the necessary .zips in your internal SD card.
The simple answer is you need to replace your stock recovery with a modified 2e or 3e recovery that clockworkmod is compatible with.
Since you are on 2.1, I believe you will need the 2e, but it may be easier for you to Odin to froyo and use a 3e recovery instead.
heres a video on how to do it.
here is the link for a modded 3e recovery file that you can download. that should take care of your problem if not let me know.
make sure to follow directions from video. after replacing this recovery file you should be able to flash clockworkmod thru rom manager just make sure to boot into recovery from rom manager if the stock recovery still shows up you may have to select the option to update packages from stock recovery once or twice to get cwm to take.
these directions have been used on both my captivate and my buddy's fascinate with no problems.

Wtf?
2.1 didn't require anything special for recovery. Update.Zip on sdcard and you are good. You damn sure don't replace recovery2e with anything else and it damn sure is not easier to use recovery3e.

Uh no.... If he is on 2.1 and iss on 2e why in God's name would you want to flash 3e? In the end of the day why the hell don't you just flash a kernel with it baked in? (if you really want to flash something that is.)
Also DO NOT,by all that is holy, use Rom Manager. Its useless on our Galaxy S phones (not knocking on the dev, its brilliant for HTC's and Motorolas).

If he is on 2.2 its better for him to just flash a kernel with it baked. Gives him CWM + all the great tweaks.
I have a Samsung Captivate, and keep seeing people talk about CF-Root(I believe it's a program that roots so correct me if I'm wrong). I rooted my Samsung Captivate using Superoneclick. I want to flash Onecosmic's ICS rom for the Samsung Captivate, but people keep mentioning CF-Root. Do I have to unroot, and then re root using CF-Root? Or Since I now have CWM on Android 2.2(rooted stock) can I simply flash CM7, and then flash One Cosmic's Rc3.1 rom. Also can I flash CM7 from Android 2.2, or do I have to down date android back to eclair and then flash CM7. Thank everyone so much, and please help me move this to the correct area if it has already been made before. I searched on XDA and found nothing about "rooting different methods". Thanks again.
Rooted is rooted. If you have cwm then it doesn't matter what os you're on, in fact if you would have just flashed a custom kernel with Odin that has cwm compiled into it you wouldn't even need to root to flash a ROM.

Like Studacris said, root is root. You can also flash CM7 from Froyo. HOWEVER, if you don't already have CWM recovery (which is not the same as being rooted, and I suspect you don't actually have), you won't be able to flash CM7 from where you are now.
If you actually have CWM, you can just flash CM7 from 2.2. If you don't, follow the instructions here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
to get CM7 and go from there.
Studacris is right, flashing a kernel (any kernel) with CWM from Odin or Heimdall is the easiest way to go, and then use that kernel's CWM to flash from there. Because of Froyo's 3e recovery, rooting it doesn't gain you much in the way of flashing ROMs because the stock recovery isn't going to let you flash anything anyway, rooted or not.
I am rooted, and I actually do have CWM installed( 3 button combo works), but do I need to install CWM the way it says, or is using rom manager to do it ok?. I've rooted 3 inspires and have put the Revolution HD Rom on them. Just didn't want to mess up this Samsung. Thanks for the helpful comments.
ROM manager does more harm than good. Just get cwm and your golden. (by update.zip or kernel with it baked in. 3e recovery won't use update.zip)

This is what I was trying to explain. Just because you can get to the recovery console does not mean you have clockworkmod, unfortunately.
You have to install it the way the directions say to. You can try using ROM Manager, but it won't work on 2.2. You will get a signature verification error and it will stop. You can try it if you want, you won't mess anything up, it just won't work.
If you really think you already have it, reboot into recovery. If you have it, it will say "ClockworkMod Recovery Version x.x.xxx" across the top. If it does, just flash CM7 from there with the "Install Zip From SD" option. If it says "Samsung 3e Recovery" and doesn't have that option, you don't have CWM and you won't be able to flash anything from there, including a CWM installer.
As far as ROM Manager is concerned, I would recommend steering clear of it in general. It worked well in 2.1 but you can't use it to install CWM in anything since then and you tend to get odd behavior with it when using it to do anything else. Follow the ClockworkMod directions, I have used them several times with no issues.
Thanks apbthe3, you were 100% correct. I see that I have to flash a new kernel with CWM built in, thanks. I thought that it looked differennt than the CWM ON MY INSPIRE so I checked and it didn't load up CWM. Thanks again.

Dear friends,
Little background. I was on CM10 stable, but decided to I update to CM10.1 M1, After the update, had no market, however, so I tried to downgrade to CM10 stable and it bricked. So .. back to stock it is! Now I am having trouble getting out of stock. I am not new to flashing, but I never had this kind of a persistent problem.
The short summary of what I get no matter what I try is: Every kernel that is not the stock Eclair kernel has boot-animation messed up (random lines of color on screen), and I cannot enter recovery - I sometimes can boot sometimes cannot.
Steps I have taken
I went back to stock Eclair rom + non-root kernel (LINK).
I rooted (LINK)
But when I tried to update kernel to allow CWM, it bricked my phone. So back to stock, again!
I tried this a few times. Now, the latest attempt, I tried the stock 2.3.5 rom + rooted, CWM kernel (LINK... I get the phone running, but I cannot get into recovery, and no utility that has "reboot to recovery" has managed to get me into recovery.
The plea
All I want is CWM, so I can install what I want. Without it, I am stuck with Odin one-click and Odin flashable packages (Heimdall does not want to work right for me - the drivers are messed up - and trying to fix those brkeas my Odin drivers).
I have no data on the phone at the moment, I can reinstall everything if need be .. but I am out of ideas besides keep trying different roms and kernels until something gives me CWM and I am free again.
I have AT&T GB bootloaders.
thanks for any help, I will try to provide any additional info I can.

Messed up screen = wrong bootloaders. Flash Odin KK4 with bootloaders
From there, follow this link.
Finally, you can get back up on CM10.1 - Btw, you had no market cause you didn't flash their Gapps.
UPDATE .. ugh that took a while:
1) From the master list LINK, wet back to 2.1, I897UCJF6
2) From the same thread installed I897UCKF1 with bootloaders
3) rooted: LINK (I know -not XDA)
4) removed the 3e recovery lock (LINK) - this did not seem to work, but I did do it.
5) installed Speedmod kernel from here LINK - this did not boot, but it did install CWM
6) installed CM10.0 Stable from SD cadr - twice
7) installed gapps
8) just did my first boot to CM10.
This is both a record for myself for later, and for anyone else that may find this useful.
