Is this possible on the Galaxy Tab? Can the built-in GPS work w/o the 3G data service? Basically want GPS Service w/o using up my monthly data allowance.
yep. I'm using CoPilot GPS with my verizon GT and I do not even have a data plan set up for it. The maps are stored on my SD card.
I have my 3G turned off on my vzw GT, I use wifi only and google GPS service, works great.

I have AT&T Tilt on AT&T service plan (phone and unlimited PDA). If I use GoogleMaps and enable GPS to see my position on the map, do I incur any charges with AT&T. I don't want to map routes or pay for their subscribed GPS service.
Thanks in advance.

No. You are using data, which is included within your unlimited plan. You are also using your own GPS radio, which won't incur any charge. Only if you sign up or log on to TeleNav would you get charged by AT&T.
I'm not sure, but you would still be downloading the maps from Google, so I would think, at the very least, that you would still be utilizing your data plan.
You're safe. Just like Guilf said, as long as you do not use TeleNav, you will not incur any charges for mapping.
Asked & answered, thread closed..
is there a way to only use wifi on the htc tilt with out having a data plan and to insure that no data would be used? also can skyfire work on the htc tilt?
you don't even have to put a sim card in your kaiser to use wifi
I put my daughters SIM into my G1 and she is getting full data access. Her current service is for a samsung Gravity with unlimited SMS/MMS. My guess is that the MMS service uses the same APN so she is authorized to talk data for that reason. Should I worry about some weird data charges from T-Mobile if she uses this phone for the next week?

Somehow I had data usage and it activated for me too, but the data use did show up on my bill (it was too minute to charge for)
if you want to disable 3g/edge/grps, download apndroid from the market (idk how it will affect the MMS though)
Hello all,
a while back i had a tilt and found a program to turn off internet data services on the phone so i could still use it as a phone, sms, mms device, and not get charged for internet usage on the phone.
i'm now looking at the tilt2 from at&t and wondering if the same is available. i don't want to pay for internet service on the phone through att. i just want to use the phone for phone, sms, and mms. if i want to use the internet, i'll just turn on the wifi on the phone.
is the program still out there to turn off the att internet data services?
thanks
Call AT&T and turn data service off
It is easier than that. Let me tell you what I did. When my AT&T account, like most accounts, was created it was set up with the data server turned on in a pay -as-you-use-it mode. I never got charge for the data service because I never used it. I called AT&T and had them explicitly turn off all data services. So if I try to use the data service I now get a no network error. (I use WIFI for data service.) Now I can use any smartphone I want that uses AT&T frequencies without incurring any data charges. I did this for all our lines. I have the Tilt 2 and love it. No extra data charges on my bill. My phone picture on AT&T's web page automatically changed to the Tilt 2, so AT&T obviously knows I have one. My son got an iPhone. The same for him for his AT&T webpage phone picture.
Okay, here goes! First post here, and hopefully a useful one for others.
The prerequisite info:
T-mobile Galaxy Tab flashed to GT-P1000
Firmware Version 2.2
Baseband version T959TLJL3_ROTO-2G / w/ switch: T849UVJJB_ROTO3G
Kernel version 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1
Build number FROYO.XXJME
I purchased this Gtab stock, and went through Rotohammers tutorial for using the tablet as a phone while still retaining 3g capabilities of a data plan. I think I got all of that working correctly but can't verify it as I don't have a T-mobile sim card with data. (verified voice calling does work on the Tab on T-mobile)
I have since then installed Sipdroid and Google Voice with a PBXes trunk so that I can make free wifi calls using Google Voice to/from anywhere with wifi, or on 3g. All that is working great. ....BUT....
I thought the Gtab was unlocked with Roto's firmware, but I found out it wasn't when I inserted my AT&T based sim card (Actually "Consumer Cellular") It was saying "enter network lock control key" on startup with that sim installed.
I found an unlocking app in the market called Galaxy_S Unlock and went through the steps to unlock the Gtab for my AT&T card and it will not make or receive calls. In the settings it shows my phone number for the sim card, and has the IMEI # and such, but no worky. I'm wondering if there is a conflict in the settings of the device with Google Voice and/or SipDroid? All of those use the dialer app that the Euro firmware has on it... I can make Wifi calls with the dialer, but when I disconnect the wifi it doesn't connect the call. It all closes down as if the call ended. Any help on this, or do I NEED to remove the Sipdroid app or could there be some APN issues? BTW data doesn't work either on the sim card in either 2g or 3g modems that I used from Roto. I know I will probably have to use a different AT&T modem for the 3g, but the 2g one should work, right?
Update: Okay, got 2g data to work after going in and changing the APN settings for Consumer Cellular (AT&T). It still closes the dialer app when I try to make a voice call with the wifi disconnected. On the 3g modem it only gets Edge network just like the 2G setting. I'm going to try uninstalling Google Voice and see what happens.
Hooray, problem fixed... at leat partially!
Okay, uninstalling Google Voice fixed the problem. Now I need to figure out how to keep my free Wifi calling capabilities while still having Google Voice installed. Any ideas?
Problem solved!
Okay, got EVERYTHING working now with the exception of the correct modem for 3g on AT&T. I went back through and re checked my data settings, reinstalled google voice and now everything works as it should. When wifi is available my calls use wifi and when there isn't wifi it uses my sim cards cellular service. I just need the 3g modem for AT&T and I'll be set. I had to set up Google Voice so that it would prompt me to either use or not use GV to make the call and now everything is perfect. Free wifi calls on my Gtab and now a back up phone if my current one craps out. Yay!
great to hear that.
Now you might want to read the success story here:

But you have a T-Mobile tab there. Not sure if flashing AT&T modem works for it.
Let us know if you are successful.
You won't get 3g. If you use JK3 modem on t-mobile tab you will get good voice, EDGE data. You won't need the modem switch.
