Sharp Beautiful Background Quality - LG Optimus Black

i found this here on the forum, but this info is for optimus 2x and it says as follows:
If you want the backgrond to be sharp, set the background with the app Crop Wallpaper and set bpp to 24/32. (Open system/etc/init.d/bpp file with Root Explorer and edit the "16") Then you have a sharp, beautiful background.
How to do this on our black p970??? HELP???

This belongs in general, not in Development. Please post appropriately in the future.

SORRY glad you fix the post location...any help guys????

Used this app before, it was good because it will crop your picture properly and able to add dither and 8bit transpency color if the picture color gradient is banded, not too perfect but very good result
And to make your picture sharp, default gallery app also can do this, just use a launcher that able to strict wallpaper to portrait, gallery will obey it. Or, if you want full landscape, edit the file with photoshop, resize it to 960x480. Add a bit "unsharp mask" in filter > sharpen.
About init.d folder, there is no bpp folder in there.

[Q] Grainy wallpaper?

Maybe I'm missing something? Whenever I go to set a picture in my gallery as a wallpaper, it becomes ridiculously zoomed in and grainy?
I haven't had my phone that long but I've looked and I'm sure I'm forgetting to check something somewhere or something... anyone know what i'm not doing?
The picture I set as a wallpaper always looks fine in the gallery..
I believe android only supports 16 bit wallpapers. You are seeing color banding. I noticed it too.
ya but why does it zoom in on the picture? the picture included in the crop box isn't even all there

Have you tried holding the border of the crop box and expanding it as large as possible?
Also, the, "Backgrounds" app sets nice, clear wallpapers if you set them from within the app.
Wallpaper set and save fixed it for me.
go get a free app called flikie wallpaper and use that to set backrounds, even your own pics or whatever the pic may be, when the phone asks what program to use to set wallpaper, use this app ( you will see the icon there)
should help i have huge crisp wallpapers and love them

In order to get the wallpaper to look properly without zooming in on part of the picture, the picture has to be resized to 960x800, then the wallpaper will look sharp. Try this wallpaper and see if it works for you if it does then the issue is the size of the wallpaper your using.
Ok I just downloaded the wallpaper I uploaded but the size changed. So forget about the idea lol. Just take a wallpaper with a high resolution and use paint the resize it and upload it the your phone. Apply it as a wallpaper and your done.
I tried to both of those apps and neither let me set a picture saved on my phone. I tried making the crop box small, big, nothing works

Wallpaper from photos without stretching/skewing

I didn't see this anywhere while trying yo figure it out so I thought I'd share:
I took a new photo in portrait mode. I then resized it to 640x860. Then made a new blank jpeg in paint sized 1250x1000 and filled it in black.
Then I copied and pasted my 640x860 pic into the black box in paint and centered it, making sure it stayed 1250x1000 and no white areas.
So save that as a jpeg and put it on your phone however you do it. Now when selecting wallpaper from the gallery it let's you pick the entire pic with the little cropping box and the picture stays in proportion.
Set wallpaper scrolling to off and you have a great pic without it looking skewed.

I open up jpegs via ES File Explorer, press and hold, and set wallpaper. I am not prompted to choose an area or anything like that.
What I'm saying is that a portrait pic that is of relatively small resolution will be stretched to fit the full width of the Epic screen to include the extra home screen scrolling. This avoids that stretching.

[Q] Wallpaper resolution?

Hi all. I ve just bought galaxy tab and i ve made a custom wallpaper for it. The resolution of the screen is 1024x600 so i ve made a wall with this reolution but it doesn't fit properly with the screen. I ve tried also 1200x1024 but i ve got the same problem. I ve tried to make one smaller, like 800x600.nothing to do. What is the right resolution for a galaxy tab wall?
Many thanks
Luca
Its not the picture that's the problem. Some roms/gallery apps don't scale them properly. They'll either be good quality but not fit the screen, or slightly pixelated and be full screen.

My wallpapers looking good in app gallery; the problem appears when i try to set the wallpaper as a background (i see an orange squared area that highlight a portion of image).
I rather expected to see my picture as big as the orange rectangle, but it's not, due to wrong wallpaper resolution (i think)
EDIT:
i have found this topic: http://bit.gy/Zy
and the resolution suggested in that thread is the same i've tried
As Ganjdroid suggested, it's not the images that's at fault here. Personally, I hate the stock wallpaper app so I use the browser. If you can, put the image online somewhere, browse to it and long-hold it and select "set as wallpaper". That's the best method I've found for setting hi-res wallpapers.
There's also "Wallpaper set and save" in the market which does a good job too.

That's right. Setting from the browser works fine... Strange.
But, the AOSP Gallery will size images correctly but you lose a bit of quality, the stock Samsung Gallery will keep quality but won't fit right at the top and bottom.

Uh, how about giving QuickPic a try? Free on the market, it's an awesome gallery app.

The correct wallpaper resolution is 1024x1200. Look for an app called gTabWallpaper. If you have wallpapers of this resolution, that app will apply it properly. It also sets larger resolutions quite nicely.
Sent from my Galaxy Tab.
Wallpapers have been an issue since the Tab was launched, it seems to be a prob with the way the Tab scales.
Download Quickpic from the market and use that app to set your wallpapers (1200x1024). With Quickpic you'll have no problem at all and your wallpapers will be sharp and clear.
Do you use any HD wallpaper app?

[TUTORIAL] Fit Wallpaper to homescreen

Hello everyone,
Have been seeing a lot of posts regarding questions on how to fit wallpaper to your center screen. As we all know, when trying to fit wallpaper, it ends up zoomed and the central object get's spread over all the homescreens. Haven't found an app that does not distort the image so I tried modifying the picture and found it's works great.
Just to be clear, I will show yo how to go from this:
To this
Requirements:
-Photo editing software. I use Photoshop but probably GIMP Paint.net or other software could do just fine. It's easier if it has guides and layers support.
Steps:
1. Get a wallpaper obviously. Any size will do since as we will be cropping and streching it. Got mine from here
2. I've attached the Photoshop template, which you can use as a guide. As far as I know GiMP opens psd files just fine. *
* If GIMP doesn't open it or using another image editing software:
- Create an image 960x800 px (default wallpaper size)
- Draw vertical guides/ lines at the 240 px, 480 px and 720px mark
3. Paste the image. Make sure that (in this case) the car fits between the first and last guide. this will ensure it fits to just one home screen
4. You now have to fill the rest of the image.
In this case, the background has a gradient so there will be no significant quality loss or obvious distortion if we warp it. Just select parts of the background, hit transform and drag.
If your image has a solid color background, just fill the rest of the image with that color.
If the background is more complex, and can;t use one of the methods above, you have to tediously use the clone stamp/heal tool to fill in the image.
5. You should be left with something looking like this:
Now just save the image, send it to your phone and set it as your wallpaper.
If you have any questions, I'm happy to try to answer them.
Cheers
Great tutorial .. Also had this problem many times .. Most of the time the app wallpaper set and save ( available in the market for free) did the trick.
Great tutorial. I like GIMP too for graphic editing without the expensive Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.
However, I'm lazy at times to log on my lappie, so I'm using PicSpeed Wallpaper app (from the Market) to crop and set wallpapers.. While viewing a picture in Gallery, press Menu, select Set Picture As (this is for ICS, I forgot what the option reads in GB), look for the PicSpeed icon and the text Set as Wallpaper. It then brings up PicSpeed Wallpaper cropping tool. It's working great for me, besides PicSpeed also has lots of nice wallpapers. There are occasion zoomed wallpaper issues with some launchers, but so far I have not experienced it on GO Launcher EX.
Good stuff!
Damn. I can't do it lol. I followed what it said but the image still zoomed. I don't know what I did wrong.

Try Simple Image Wallpaper. After installation you find it among the live wallpapers. It scales pictures really well to our screens
