what rom did you install? froyo gingerbread?
what type of cwm? update.zip type or built-into kernel?
have you gone into stock recovery and selected "reinstall packages" TWO TIMES in a row?

if your phone turns on it IS NOT a paperweight. something wasnt done, or you didnt read enough of something somewhere.
1. Do your homework and read through forums. This Q&A itself has many threads from people which had experience similar to yours.
2. Don't Panic. Also, please don't right in bold and caps. It seems like that you are shouting. People here have patience and they are here to help.
3. Follow the instructions below step by step -
As you mentioned that you are able to enter in DL and recovery mode, your phone is not yet dead. I also assume that you tried to use ROM Manager from market (my guess from what you have written), if so, please know what you are doing before attempting. Anyways -
- Make sure you have proper drivers installed on your computer. If you are not sure, grab them here - Windows 32 Bit OR Windows 64 Bit. Reboot your computer if required.
- Download Odin One Click Stock JF6 from here.
- Open Odin (right click on it and run as administrator). Plug the USB cable to PC, other end is not connected yet.
- Turn off your phone. (Pull out the battery and put it back). Press and hold down both Volume low and up buttons and while holding them, insert USB cable into phone. You should enter into Download mode, Also Odin running on your computer should recognize it. Flash it.
If your phone is completely dead, you can't find out what is going on, follow the instruction on this post.

I haven't been on froyo in a while but I think you need to take out Sim card as well?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
Hey guys,
I'm having a similar problem with the same phone. I was trying to flash to a custom OS from eclair using the heimdall 1.1.1 suite. The problem is that what I used is supposed to be used to flash from froyo. So now a samsung galaxy s welcome page comes up in the new font, but it will never load anything else. I can also get into recovery and download mode, but when I run the Odin One Click JF6 it doesn't do anything. It says something along the lines of finished, 0 success, 0 fails.
Could I just flash the original kernel back onto the phone? I have been reading the forums and haven't found many people that can get into download mode and are still having problems. Thanks you guys for your help in advance
EDIT: Just figured it out. Used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266172. VERY happy my phone is unbricked!

You saved me, I've been looking over the whole forum trying to find some way to get this resolved. There are just so many posts on here it's hard to find specific information. (especially for the new people). This helped me so much, I hit the thanks button, but felt I should say more.

OK so I read the first 32 pages of this thread

and felt confident I could successfully flash the stock ROM, used method two to enter download mode, Odin flashed the ROM the phone shutdown ODIN registered complete. Now the phone will not power on to any state nor will it respond to being plugged into to the wall charger. I assume it is Bricked I have not seen anyone else refer to a completely Bricked phone. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas restoring it.
pull the battery for a few min, put it back in and try that
supposedly these phones are not supposed to brick. I would try and boot it without any cables or batteries in it just off the USB cable for power... did you make sure you pulled your sim card before you tried flashing?

well I hope they can not be bricked but this captivate is acting very brickish, thanks for the USB cable tip no dice though, and yes both the sim and SD card were removed thanks
I've had the best experience getting into download mode by:
1. remove sim and sd card
2. open odin
3. insert usb into PC only
4. hold vol. up and down simultaneously
5. insert usb into phone
phone will enter download mode, odin should recognize the device and show a COM connection (this is of course if you have the drivers installed first). Oh and I've noticed that the phone won't go into MTP mode if you are using the launcher pro - you need to switch back to twlauncher before connecting to odin.
when you opened odin the first time, what files did you try to flash? did you check any other boxes in odin?

Yeah, absolutely no luck getting to download mode using that or any other of the various routes. but just to be clear at this point the phone is completely dead I have no screen or response to USB. as far as Odin this was a one click package to revert to stock found at this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...12#post7924712
their are no boxes to check like standard Odin, here is a screenshot so you know what I am talking about. Apparently most people in the thread have had great success with the current process I am trying to discover what I did incorrectly to create this problem but I am at a loss right know
Move your post to the Odin section and someone there can help you. This is not the first post I've seen about a bricked phone. Those guys try to brick em and can't.

Don't sweat it I'm a noob too.

It workes, Odin is picky though, you need the drivers listed there and you may need to install and uninstall them a few times before they work correctly. Also follow each step in the order it is written, Odin is picky (I need to say it again). Plenty of people have been in your shoes and they got them to go into download mode so go there and post your question.
Good Luck.

Well I got to admit I think I have bricked the unbrickable phone after rereading through the entire thread (my question was posted their the same time I posted here didn't realize that was the thread you were talking about). the few people who had the Black screen of death like myself either found that holding the up volume key and power would get the phone to a text screen and then they could get to the download screen. I have followed these directions Ad nauseam but nothing happens with my phone at all. well at worst I will have proven it can be done how inauspicious
I did the same thing and no one seemed to register that it would do nothing. It never got far enough to allow the pc to even recognize it had a device plugged in, therefor Odin never saw it. Some kind of strange filter in thier heads. All I could do was hit the power and volume up button to get some cryptic hex addresses and IRQ's. No matter how much I tried to power on, remove cards and batteries (overnight mind you) power did nothing. One thing I didnt try that a poster here sais was to plug in after you hit the volume buttons and power but I had to return mine.

I honestly wish I could even get that cryptic message on my screen but I get absolutely nothing looks like I will be buying a new phone oh well thanks for the input.
Hey! My Captivate has the leaked Froyo 2.2 and I rooted it afterwards. It's been running fine til I downloaded an app. I'm not even sure what the app is called. I can't use it now. It boots up, then vibrates every 5 seconds it seems. Can't make calls, text, or anything. Won't even let you open any menus. Is there any way I can reinstall the whole operating system? I appreciate your help with anything you are able to do. Thanks!
As long as you can get into download mode your fine.
Read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Also this belongs in Q/A section, not development.
Good Luck.
It won't let me enable usb debugging. the media scanner keeps running and then freezes the phone.
Use method 3...... U dont need usb enabled. At least i dont
You don't need debugging to get into download mode. Shut the phone off and hold both volume keys while plugging in the USB cable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Follow exact instructions and you will be fine.
Combo 3 works for me. Basically open ODIN on your computer then press both Vol up and down buttons and plug in the USB cable and you should see download mode.

Make sure the phone is unplugged from your PC. Go into download mode and only when you see the yellow triangle you plug the usb cable to the PC.
That should work. If is doesn't you may have to return it. If it is under warranty, AT&T will replace (as long as you don't tell them you rooted it).
Lol, gotta love not reading about how to fix your phone if YOU mess it up (and making sure you are able to perform said instructions). Responsibility is on you to read the forums THOROUGHLY. There is a plethora of information. And plenty of "HELP I BORKED MY PHONE" threads (posted in the wrong thread section more often than not). I sorry for trolling, but seriously? Don't install anything to your phone that is not properly researched on. Your phone is just like a computer, there is many ways to **** it up.
TL;DR : There are many threads about this. Make sure you have properly installed the drivers. If not the case, try using a different USB port.
And also make sure odin is open before you plug the phone in
Do you have the correct drivers?
Also...this has nothing to do with development...should be moved to Q&A

1. Get into Download Mode (WITH THE PHONE PLUGGED IN) by following the steps below
*Turn off the phone until you get to the charging battery screen (keep in mind, your phone is currently PLUGGED IN)
*Press volume up and down, and power all at once.
*As soon as the screen turns black, release your power button.
2. Unplug phone from USB
3. Open Odin (in Administrator if you're running W7 or Vista), try one of the ones I attached to this post, at least one of them is bound to work, some don't work for me, but works for others, some doesn't work for others, but works for me, whatever floats your boat
4. Load in the files into Odin that you have downloaded from above Just load in the files corresponding to the text field.
DO NOT CHECK REPARTITION.
5. Plug in your phone with the DL mode
6. Click start and wait for the magic
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NO-BOOT PHONES
This is where your phone does NOT turn on, no combo of buttons works and power button does nothing.
DO THIS ONLY WHEN YOU PLUG IN YOUR PHONE AND NOTHING SHOWS UP ON THE SCREEN!!! If else, follow the steps from above.
This method is basically same as above, EXCEPT the way you get into Download Mode as your phone is HARD BROKEN.
1. Download all the files required in the "BOOT CYCLE" section of this post.
2. Remove everything from your phone (SD card, sim, battery).
3. Plug your phone into your computer WITHOUT the battery, as you have already taken it out in the last step.
4. Press and HOLD vol. up and vol. down.
5. As you are HOLDING these buttons, reattach your battery.
6. You should be in Download Mode.
7. Unplug phone from USB
8. Follow steps 4-8 from the "BOOT CYCLE" section.
Troubleshooting:
-Odin stuck at some random process?
*Switch to another odin
*Make sure you did NOT check repartition, if you did, just repeat all the steps over again, except for the downloading parts, obviously.
-Phone not responsive?
*Try "NO-BOOT PHONES"section of this guide
-Phone stuck at Galaxy S logo screen?
*Put it in to DL mode, and run Odin again, it's just a bad install.
-All three ODIN is nonfunctional, stuck or giving "FAILED" errors?
*DO NOT CLOSE ODIN ONCE IT HAS FAILED!
*Unplug your phone
*Replug in your phone, get it into DL mode
* Unplug once it is in DL mode
*Replug and ODIN should recognize your phone
*Leave all the settings the same, then click "Start" again.
-Cannot get into download mode using the method I listed? Use the method(s) below:
Soldering Method
More methods coming soon

Nice Guide! One thing I noticed is that the color is overdone and instead of helping with reading it has the opposite effect. Made everything look semi-messy and crowded.
good guide..
one question though, the PIT file is the one for the Tmobile JFD file. would that affect any unlocked vibrant? I mean, would it lock the phone back to Tmo??
thanks for sharing,
Cheers
I thought there's no fix to a phone which is really BRICKED? oh well, everything's possible at this time.
Please be more descriptive in your terms of "brick(ed)". The term bricked is meant that your phone isb rendered COMPLETELY & UTTERLY USELESS, FOREVER! The phone will never get used again... Hence.... Brick!?
I like the guide just think it would better off with more descriptive details of what caused the phone to boot loop or not boot.
Ok let me fix up the terms when I get home. I don't think you can ever make the vibrant utterly useless haha. Android phones are nearly impossible to brick

Is there a fix for the brick where the phone does not turn on at all amd does not even respond to the usb in the phone like for example plugging in the phone a wall charger and not even a grey battery or a little circle symbol?

Yeah, read the info under the "HARD BRICK" section Good luck, it should work as that also happened to me, I had it fixed with the method I listed up there.

Now off to find the soldering guide x]
what do you do when you use odin and it STILL boots back to the samsung screen??
If the black screen doesn't change after like 15 minutes, then just do the whole process all over again. It could just mean a bad install
Even programs messes up sometimes
Goodluck!
Remember, please post your results so I can see how I can improve this guide!
So, i think i have actualy made a brick. I was running macnut r12/a13 kernal for about a week and had some issues with the overclock so i figured i would just flash aver itself as that has fixed a few issues in the past. booted into clockwork, flashed the rom, no worries. Hit reboot system and it hung at the vibrant/i9k boot screen. At this point i was still not worried. Here is where it gets fun. My Phone will now not boot into recovery, i have been trying now for about 4 hours. I can boot into download mode, but i can not get odin to see my phone. On the same PC, odin sees other vibrants, just not mine. If i turn on the phone it just boot loops at the vibrant/i9k screen. My pc makes the usb plug/unplug noise as it boot loops turning on and off with the vibrant/i9k screen telling me that the drivers could not be installed. If i plug my gf's vibrant in, i have no issues and odin gives me a com port. Any suggestions?
THANKS dude only if if you posted this before when my vibrant was soft bricked... I sent it back I didn't know what to do hehe!
Also a question... if I do this.. will it remove root and everything also does my phone HAVE to be soft/hard bricked to use these methods because I might want to just use the soft brick Odin thing when I want to get back to normal without being soft bricked...

@Rider, You're welcome, and yes it does remove everything, and yes it does work even when you're not stuck in bootloops

thanks for your reply
If odin recognizes one vibrant( the working one, my gf's) and not the other(my bootlooping) do you still think its a driver issue.
Macnut is a amalgam of almost all the galaxy s's. when my phone booted it would startsaying vibrant, then flash i9k. i did install kies thinking it would have some drivers for the i9k. I will try monkeying with the drivers a bit and let you know.

Hey guys
This is my first post at XDA but I am not new to flashing ROM to my Captivate
I have looked all over the forums but could not find an answer to my questions.
My Captivate was originally on Eclair, later upgraded to Froyo with lag fix and it fixed nothing. It was still really slow and unusable. I saw one of my friends running Gingerbread and man it was blazing fast. So I decided to try some Gingerbread.
First of all, my Captivate if 1008 batch. The three button to download mode is not supposed to work for this batch but it worked and I was able to get it back to stock ROM. I was able to use the stock ROM too so I decided to try upgrade to Gingerbread. This time the 3 button download mode did not work. So I did "adb reboot download" and put it into download mode and all problems started.
1. No USB port is detecting the phone.
2. The battery slipped out of the phone and after I put it back, it gave me the infamous phone--!--computer soft bricked state.
3. In Windows 7, No "3 button fix to put it to download mode with Odin3 open" is working
4. In Linux (Ubuntu 10.10), I tried the one-click-unbrick JAR file and the error is "Device Not Detected".
5. I have tried 2 different Micro USB cables and all possible USB ports, still no response.
6. Once I connect the phone to the computer, I get the phone--!--computer logo but lsusb does not show the device.
7. On Windows 7, Device manager does not show any USB device when I connect the phone.
So basically I think the problem is the device is not showing up on any USB port, so there is no question of ODIN, Hiemdall or One-click-anything. What should I do now?
Thanks

Have you tried cleaning the USB port on your phone with some rubbing alcohol and a small piece of cloth on a toothpick? Maybe it's just not making good contact.
Let me give that a quick try.
Two question.
1. Is the device supposed to be detected even in the soft bricked state by the OS?
2. Even in soft bricked state, is the battery charging? Cuz if its not, I need to order an external battery charger.
Thanks

If you haven't looked through it, check out the "Captivate Connection Issues and Download Mode Help" in my signature.
To answer your questions:
1. Yes. That screen is quasi-download-mode, and the OS should see it.
2. Honestly, I don't know. I think the answer is yes, but someone who understands the hardware better than I do would have to respond.

Okay so I was flashing through ODIN, and I flashed through the PHONE section instead of PDA because for some reason I turn into Dolan Duck at 11 PM. Now ODIN won't get past "Setup connection..." and Heimdall gets an error when it attempts to "handshake with Loke". Switched to three different computers and it always acts the same, so I'm thinking I might have really jacked the ability to write directly onto the phone through the computer. Phone still powers on, but just boots to the AT&T world phone screen and stays there. No recovery mode so if I can have a way to fix this and get a kernel written onto my phone that'd be really great.

Phone still powers on, but just boots to the AT&T world phone screen and stays there. No recovery mode so if I can have a way to fix this and get a kernel written onto my phone that'd be really great.

Hey hi,
1. By far the best way to go back to Stock ROM's :good:
2. I'm not sure if this is exactly the solution to your problem but hope it works.
- I've had problems with heimdall and odin, drivers not being compatible, the driver that is installed for heimdall doesn't seem to work with odin and if you try installing the driver to get the odin to work, heimdall stops working. So your best option would be to try this:
a. Go to the forum link above, download all the required files.
b. switch off your phone, wait for 3s, then hold the volume buttons "+" and "-" at the same time, you can just use your thumb, but those two buttons must be pressed at the same time, now hold it! Insert the usb connector from the laptop/pc to your phone via the micro usb slot. Wait for it.. and voila you are in download mode.
c. Now, if you are running Odin and if you HAVE the correct drivers, you will have the correct green/yellow indication when you use the software, which basically tells you that there is a "handshake" between the Odin and cappy.
d. Once this is done, you can follow the steps that you were planning to do, otherwise follow the steps from the thread posted above. one by one.
If you already have ROM's on the SD card, and you've already got CWM on the phone, you just need to go into recovery mode(hold the volume buttons and then hold onto the power button, it should work, otherwise give it another shot ), once in recovery you can install the new ROM using the normal method.
(a suggestion) Most people face problems coz the driver installed isn't the right one, so if you are using windows OS, and the drivers aren't detected, download the drivers again, go into device manager, completely uninstall the driver for samsung captivate, and install the one that is working.
Watch how it is done using one touch Odin3 --> here
If you are upgrading your ROM to ICS, after you flash the ROM, flash the Devil kernel for cappy, --> is a good one :good:
**Always remember to back up data**A clean install is always preferable**

Yeah the little box turns yellow in ODIN but it just hangs there at setup connection. I also, sadly, don't have recovery mode because my kernel flash is when it all went terribly wrong. I can connect to ODIN and Heimdall with no problem because I have the respective drivers, the problem just seems to lie in the fact that neither program can write to the device so it continually hangs.

quick question for clarification, the phone is in download mode and then u connect it to ODIN and when u hit start(to flash) nothing happens?
You could try this.
1. Install another version of Odin, or even the Odin one click with gb
2. Remove battery and cable connecting phone and PC.
3. connect USB to PC and then go into download mode and try flashing the new package.
Let me know if its still not working, i kinda had this problem, but i tried with different Odin packages, try to flash the one with the gb bootloader.
Yeah that's what happens. Its recognized and everything then just hangs at setup connection part really don't know what's up but it's kind of weird.
I really like have tried to change it like odin packages and everything but it just won't be read past set up connection. I just wonder if I messed up my partitions to the point of no return.
