[Q] Much searching, still uncertain: TMO T-849 Tab and Phone Calls - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've done a lot of searching, but am still lost.
I've got a rooted Vibrant, so I understand most of this, but not all.
My father has the T-849 and a basic flip dumbphone. He wants to use his tab as a phone.
I see different methods of getting the tab to work as a phone. What is the most current/easiest method?
Will he need an android 3G phone sim/plan to make calls? Our can he just use his Tab's sim or flip phone's sim?

[Q] Possible to use Samsung Vibrant on AT&T *without* data plan?

Hello XDA! After numerous searches and lots of contacting my local psychics, I've still been unable to find the answer to life's #1 question:
If I buy and unlock a T-Mobile/Samsung Vibrant, I know I can use it on AT&T. However, if AT&T has IMEIs on file for the device, it will be detected and upgraded to a data plan (thanks AT&T). Since the Vibrant is part of the GS line, does anyone know if the Vibrant will be detected as a smartphone?
Thanks in advance for any help!
EDIT: and this thread was no help and in the wrong place.
A wee bit late...
I'm a wee bit late, but if anyone wants to know:
I've had my Vibrant for a bit now, and so far, no upgrade. I'll keep this thread updated if I do get upgraded, though.
Dd you just put the at&t sim card in the unlock vibrant? Or do I have to disable the data connection to prevent at&t to detect the device? And does MMS works without data plan on vibrant? Thanks in Advance.
Sorry, but I don't use MMS at all. I have data turned off both at the phone and at AT&T, but if I understand correctly MMS should work and data should not get you detected (other than using excess data).
Samsung Vibrant on AT&T phone only plan
I have a Vibrant I use on AT&T with plain phone service only & enjoy the Android world in Wi-Fi areas. I have "Mobile Networks - data enabled" turned off in setting so it does not use any of AT&T precious data. I am not sure if this is in stock phone program or not, I have custom ROM installed. Every time I update my phone with a new ROM I make sure I do not have the SIM card in until I have the data turned off because the ridiculous fee for pay by use. Anyway I logged onto AT&T and set my phone to a dumb phone on their list of phones, waited a few days, and called AT&T. All they could quote to me on the Vibrant phone with their SIM card in was it was a "non AT&T branded phone". I got data removed no problem but did require a phone call - unable to do online. This has worked well.

[Q] Want to get a Tab but confused about a bunch of things

Hi,
I realize that some of these questions have been asked before but after some reading I've come to find that there have been recent developments not documented on the main info sources.
I want to get a Tmobile Tab to be used on Tmo as a phone. I currently have an Android data plan. Is tmobile still blocking voice tabs? And is possible to get both voice and 3G, yet? What are my options here?
What if I decided to use it solely for VOIP connectivity? Am I going to have issues here or has this been sorted out? This is a valid option for me. So if this is the best option out there please feel free to say so.
BUMP and update.
I bit the bullet and bought a tab. The build quality is incredible.
I got it off craigslist so it was already rooted. I put my phone's sim card in there and I get edge. Is there any way to get it to 3G? Tmobile sim in tmobile tab.

No tablet plan / Bell Blocking Voice via IMEI?

Hi there. I've searched around and couldn't find an answer, so if this is already posted please point me in that direction.
I'm about to purchase an unlocked Galaxy Tab originally from the Rogers network off of a friend. I'm with Bell. I'm one of the lucky few that have the unlimited data plan originally offered with the Palm Pre, that also works with Android.
My question is if Bell will realize that I don't have a tablet plan when I do the steps in order to make calls/sms working and block my device or change my plan. Does anyone have a voice plan that they've been able to use with Bell on the Galaxy Tab without them noticing? This is more of a precautionary for me, because I'd really like to keep my data plan and would be quite upset if Bell were to change it.
My reasoning for getting a Rogers Tab unlocked is my assumption that Bell won't have the IMEI for a device they don't sell, so it may be safer for me. Thoughts?
i would like to know as well. im in the proccess of doing same
Sent from my GT-P1000R using XDA App
I use my Galaxy Tab as my primary / only device, which includes phone calls on Bell Mobility. I used to have Blackberry on a voice and data plan, and when I got the Tab and realized I wanted nothing else / rooted / flashed a useful ROM that supports voice, all I did was plug the new SIM into the Tab.
I haven't had any problems or changes made by Bell. I doubt they can see my device, or care, as I have called for misc reasons from the device. I simply never told them of the device change.
Now, my plan prior to the device change supported voice and data. So if your current plan does that I think you'll be ok.

bump bump bump bump
It's hard to say without knowing exactly what he did to it.
computers are complicated and a tablet is basicly a computer with a phone in it. he could have messed up a modual and decided to get out from under it. because once you start rooting and putting whatever you want on it, it's basicly yours and your warrenty is over. best way is to restore it back to the factory version and start over from there. this way you can tell if it's a software problem or hardware. it's just like building and modding your own computer.

[Q] At&T S4 Active on T-Mobile 4G (not LTE) - Need Help

My wife sat her old Galaxy phone down at a big event we went to... it's gone. So I was looking for a new phone and found an S4 Active from AT&T for really cheap. I talked to T-Mobile and they assured me we would be able to get everything working easily.
So I bought it. Got it unlocked through AT&T. Plugged in my wifes new sim and boom - we're up and running. I changed the APN stuff - the network is T-Mobile and all settings work. She gets talk, text, text pictures, etc. I can get on the internet etc. Problem is we're in a place that has weak LTE and very good Edge. My Note 3 from T-Mobile gets perfect 4G and switches between that and a couple bars of LTE from time to time.
This phone gets weak LTE but then switches to Edge to get a better connection.
Yes I've tried the guides to get the 4G radio working (galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-tutorials/how-to-enable-t-mobile-hspa-aws-bands-on-att-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337sgh-i337 etc etc) and I even tried following a guide in here that has me flash the modem back to MF1 or whatever it is through ODEN - that just hung on "Setup Connection" and never did anything.
Look - I know the S4 Active is beginning to get a bit old but it's still a really nice phone and it works great. It's more than my wife needs but we need it to get 4G where we're located. Is there an updated way to get this done? Root and custom ROM? New way to fix the radio? Trust me I've searched all over and haven't found it so I thought I would ask. Maybe I'm just searching for the wrong thing but I need help as to how to do this now - not from posts 2 years ago.
AT&T Galaxy S4 Active SGH-I537

Baseband Version I537UCUCNE3
Kernal Version 3.4.0-987011
Anything else you would need to know to help out? I'm at the point where my good deal just isn't a good deal anymore and I'm starting to look at T-Mobile phones instead of unlocked ones. Frustrated. =-(
