Disclaimer: I am not responsible for your phone. I am also not responsible for anything made using this guide.
*NOTE:* Please do not flood the forums with simple battery changes, or subtle things. This is a make it for yourself guide.
If you want to make more complete, deodexed themes, use this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821638
This is for those that want to do simple mods for themselves, and want to stay on the stock rom, or slightly modify their current rom. Nothing more. This is not a guide for fully blown deodexed themes.
On your phone, use a file explorer to grab these files:
Eclair and Froyo:
/system/framework/framework-res.apk
/system/framework/twframework-res.apk
Gingerbread:
/system/framework/framework-res.apk
/system/framework/twframework-res.apk
/system/app/SystemUI.apk
Go to the kitchen, and click the File upload section.
Attach the 3* apks you downloaded to the proper sections as shown in this screenshot. And make sure everything in a red box in this image is the same on your screen:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
*Note, for Eclair or Froyo, this would be 2 apks, not 3.
Then, once that is done, let your imagination flow, and make whatever mods you want to make.
Then, once all mods have been made, go the "Summary" tab.
If everything is ok(Green=Good, Orange=Bad, White=Not used), then hit Submit to Kitchen. This is an example of a good status bar+battery mod:
You should get an order number.
Copy and Paste your order number into a notepad, or a search bar, as long as you can remember this number.
Go to the pickup section, and once your order is done(can take a few minutes, to a while, depending on what you did), download the file.
Now, this zip is almost ready for flashing.
Open it in 7zip or winrar, and copy the entire "Settings" folder to your desktop, then delete it from the zip.
Rename the zip to whatever you want it to be called and put this zip on your sdcard.
Then, follow any theme install procedure.
2nd post just in case.

Seems like it would be safest to extract the 3 files from your own rom using a program like ES File Explorer. Do any of those files get changed in custom roms?

Probably, but odexed themes are only good on stock roms.
Hey Zander--
Have you been successful in changing Status Bar Icons? I've tried and find only a handful of them actually are the ones I choose from the kitchen...others are still stock.
Is it possible to copy/replace the ones I want from my original framework-res.apk and settingsui.apk to the UOT modified ones?
Good thread, my only thought is you could end up with a theme section here full of everyones individual themes... Example...
Hey I got a RED circle battery mod..
I got a green one...
I have red one with white letters...
LOL.. It could get a bit crazy if a handful of people start whipping out theme'd framework after framework from the Kitchen....

The status bar icons should change.
I use "Custom uni-color icons"
Check:
Statusbar icons
Power buttons
And choose their colors.

At least now if it starts getting cluttered with tons of threads you can say I made a disclaimer LOL....
I'm all about freedom to show off something we've created but at the same time for the ease of finding stuff and clutter free..
Regardless of all that.... Good how to thread.... I like them, its the only way to learn and using screen captures and all doesn't get any easier....
This seems GREAT!!!, but it only makes themes for Odexed Stock ROMS?, for anyone who has a deodexed custom rom can't use this to change things up a lil?
Or is there another kitchen-application for those...

You can, but it won't be as full as using dreamsforgottens themeing guide. Follow the steps in the OP that I made, just use the franework-res.apk, twframework-res.apk, and system-ui.apk from your ROM. I left out this in the OP for a reason, I didn't want a kajillion half-made frameworks being released as themes. But, yes you can use this.

* Only Flash Over Noobnl's Andromeda Galaxy ROM unless you are adventurous *
- I have been told that it works fine on top of other de-odexed roms, that is just my disclaimer -
I have re-named this as it is no longer a tease. It only themes the framework-res,twframework-res and settings apks at this point. I plan on theming the dialer if I get it figured out DONE.
Note: this theme is a work in progress and I will try and keep it updated as much as possible. It started with some png's from Riptide9's NEW FROYO2.2 for Evo found on xda and grew from there. Thanx for the inspiration Riptide9 your theme is awesome
I have only tested this over noobnl's andromeda galaxy ROM but seeing as how its de-odexed it might just work over any other de-odexed ROM as well. YMMV
Be sure to nandroid backup in clockwork recovery before flashing in the same.
If you like some of the mods I have put in this theme please visit the links where they came from and show some thanks to the devs, I didn't come up with this stuff on my own!
Blue Minimalism v1.3 I have done more theming to the three apk's listed above and if I did anymore it wouldn't be true to its name. I have ported the battery mod from the Desire2.2ROM found in the link below. I put this on my phone last night and it keeps in sync with the battery widget I am running but might not need anymore

BlueMinimalism v1.3.1 lockscreen mod This version has the AOSP slider lockscreen in it ported from the link below. Note: first couple of boots might take a little longer than usual but after that its normal again. I will probably theme this lockscreen a bit later but I need sleep right now...ok got some sleep and it is now themed. I also removed the network name from the lockscreen.

Thanks to chibucks for the haptic feedback removal on the AOSP lockscreen, he got it going on the moment and helped me get it going on Epic. I had an issue with my first try so please report any issue you may have. Here is a .zip to add it to the AOSP version of this theme and a .zip to restore if issues arise for you.

*note-the dialer addition causing f/c should be sorted, still need to work on phone and contacts apks but the majority of theming isn't in those two*
Blue Minimalism Dialer v1.0 This is a stand alone dialer theme that changes some more green stuff to blue along with different dialer buttons. This is also a work in progress but there isn't much more to do so feedback is welcome, then I will stick it in the theme if thats what yall want. I started with the buttons I found here and went from there.

Thanks. Is there anyway you could post the standalone battery mod?
Thanks for the upload! I just installed the zip using clockwork mod but when it boots up I got nothing but a bunch of force close windows. I did a backup so I'm not worried but I would like to know how to properly install this theme cause it looks sick!

What ROM are you running? If you are trying to install this on stock android it will cause issues as it is de-odexed and stock isn't. Need a little more info, are you running any kernels or home replacements? The more info about what you have or have not done to your phone the better the help you can get.

Hmmm...if you are on Noobnl Andromeda v1.3.0 that is a kernel only. You need to be on his ROM v1.0.3. The numbers being the same is purely coincidence and not a conspiracy. Kernel- gives cpu perfomance enhancements
ROM- final stage of customizing your phone with addons,tweaks and themes plus removing bloatware in one step

Updates:
11.25.2010 - Added a Stock Perception 4 reverter (Reverterator)
11.29.2010 - Massive rework for Perception 5, removed 1.3
12.17.2010 - Update for Perception 9
Introduction
This is a mashup of several different themes and APK kits. I took what I liked from each, made a few tweaks and ended up with this. The makers of the themes mentioned below get all the credit.
Items in the update:
Extended power choices menu - recovery, download, reboot and themed. Based off of CAP_XWJPA_AOSP_lockscreen_extented_power_menu
Android Scribble Boot Animation - GLa'DOS For Perception 5
Theme Mashup - Various elements pulled from the following
---- Dark_Soul[Doc18]
---- BlackFroyo - Samcrow
---- Darknessv2.3 - Reefermattness
---- (2) Manup456_REVOlution_1.2r1
---- Minimalistic Mod - inku
---- smooth-sense_evo1.0.25
---- and alot from Smooth-REVOlution1.1r2_1.0.1_nopercent
HOSTS file - Ad free Angry Birds (damn pigs stealing my eggs)
Battery Options - There are two choices
BlackBatt (SmoothREVOlution/Manup456) - Try BlackBatt, it uses 100 images like other percent mods. Battery life is better when you don't know the percentage of time left

How long would you consider long? I flashed with CW 10 mins ago and am still getting a blank screen. Suggestions? Ohh and flashing on Perception build 4.
2 min max. Thats too long.
What ROM are you using? Did you have any other customizations installed?
I've installed each of these several times and never had this happen.
Perception build 4. I have tried unsuccessfully to flash anything through the ROM manager app. When I flash it just goes to a blank screen. Im going to try and flash by going into recovery mode and let you know the results.
Thanks
update: flashed through CW recovery mode and it went fine. For some reason I can't flash using the ROM manager app. Anyway great theme. Have you tried to flash the a transition over the theme?
Yeah, don't use ROM Manager. It isn't really necessary with the SetiroN i9000 kernels.
Flashing the transitions from DesignGear's thread over this theme, or others, will revert the taskbar and other items to the theme originally packaged with Perception. You will be left with an ugly hybrid.
The changes are in the framework-res\anim folder (XML) and are easy enough to incorporate. I have a build with the bounce method running right now, but it is a bit off-putting. Not sure I like it.
I have a android.policy.jar that enables TapLock for Perception as well. I will be integrating it in the next version. The lock screen will look just like the one in the Doc's ROM images above.
Awesome I really like the taplock better. when should we be expecting the next version, and will we be able to just flash over the current theme?
I'll up it now. I'm dorking around with SetiroN i9000 1.4 kernel, so I won't do much more with it until after the holiday.
It will have the Taplock and Flyin' animations.
How do you uninstall?
Looks great though!

Restore your backup from step 4.
I'm not sure it is customary to include method to revert, but I can work this out later.
If you ignored the red-highlighted step (wink-wink), uninstall Launcher Pro and try plasticdarlow's stock revert. You can delete the bootanimation.zip from system/media to get the creepy eyeball boot screen back. That will leave the HOSTS file which you can revert or leave alone.

You read my mind. I darkened it quite a bit, but the transparency makes it hard to read if the screen underneath is busy. I'll update it in the next revision.
Which battery are you guys using? Part of the reason I made this was to get the BlackBatt back. I loved it when I had an EVO and I haven't seen the detailed version in any other Captivate themes. It seems that the general public likes the circle batt's, so I added it.

Just flashed it and it is attractive. Thanks!
So I don't know whats going on and why I can't apply themes at all. I open Rom Manager and press Reboot into Recovery, which of course reboots me into CWM. I go through the options to find the zip file and click apply it. It says applying theme, but thats it then goes back to the normal menu and I do reboot and nothing...
Its not just this theme though, I have tried Dark Soul and others.. So something is going on with my phone. Am I doing everything correct?
EDIT.. Thats what I was doing wrong. I was using ROM manager to reboot into Clockwork Mod instead of just using the powerbutton option of reboot into Recovery.. Completely different menu when I do that and that worked.

Update 1/10 Minor update to some, maybe major to others, I've made some changes to the status bar pull down for Ascend users, I've changed the main text to be black, I'm still not completely happy with it, so i'll keep tweaking... Also, I've added support for HDPI devices in the Gingerbread3.5.zip, in general the theme should work on a wider variety of devices.

Update 1/9 The theme is pretty much complete
In order for Ascend users to get the white clock you need to download buildprop and replace the one under your system folder with it. You'll have to be rooted and use a file manager or you could use adb shell or a terminal to replace your build.prop
Another change to the build.prop for the popups!!!
Special thanks to yuyuye for the information.
I've attached some screenshots of the theme in action. There are many more changes not visible in the screenshots, the majority of the framework-res have been updated to match the new theme.
UPDATE 12/16
I've attached the metamorph theme in case anyone wants to try it, i would say it's beta quality as it's not finished, but it's usable. Just load the v0.1.zip file on to your sdcard, download metamorph and install away. If you have any basic questions, feel free to ask but I won't be providing an major support yet because it's not finished. I would say it's 75% complete at the most. And as always, you shouldn't have any problems but USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!
UPDATE 12/22
New version v0.3 with a change to the submenu, I changed the submenu to white so the text is legible until i can get the Ascend deodexed and properly change the color of the text...
The download labeled GingerbreadAscend3.zip is may specifically for the Ascend I don't recommend anyone apply it on any other phones
The download labeled Gingerbread3.zip is for any and all MDPI phones
Have fun!!!

Insrtuctions for installation:This is a Metamorph theme, so download and install Metamorph. Put the theme on your sdcard. Make sure your phone is rooted, you have busbox downloaded and installed and that usb debugging is turned on
For Ascend users, download your appropriate build.prop file and use a program like root explorer or subfs to copy and paste it into the /system/ directory, if you don't want to purchase one of those programs, download this program from the market "Mount /system (rw / ro)" open it and mount the system as r/w then use adb shell or a terminal emulator to copy the file over

If you send me your framework-res.apk I can fix the code for the pop-up menu text.

I'd really appreciate it... I've attached it in Metamorph form, if you don't mind, what xml is responsible for those properties?

Thanks, but problem is I don't have a "values" folder in my framework, much less an xml called "style" in any of the folders...
wait..
I'm an idiot... found it
It wasn't re-compiling the whole framework for me either, i had to to trick it to get it to re-compile the styles.xml by putting it in a different folder and renaming it... Flashed it to my phone.... and... no difference, pulled the framework back down and made sure the changes where present and they are... the Ascend doesn't seem to use those files at all... I'm pretty sure too because i accidentally deleted all the files in the values folder except the styles.xml and the phone works fine...
Thanks for your ideas Benny879, if you have any insight as to whats going on, I'd appreciate any help you could give, in the mean time i'm going to be pouring through these xml files, looking for any clues...
For anyone following the progress on this, the problem seems to be that this phone uses odex files instead of the more easily assessable jar or apks, so I'm looking into deodexing the necessary files... If anyone could offer assistance, I would appreciate it...

The gingerbread metamorph theme I'm working on will change your lock screen sliders, your notification bar and slide down, your dialog confirmation buttons, market place tab button and a bunch of other misc graphics, your signal bars, battery, bluetooth, etc... The theme i'm working on doesn't touch the launcher. i personally use launcher pro, so this theme doesn't conflict with it, but if you want your launcher specifically to look like gingerbread's, you can find themes already made for launcher pro..

Hello Guys
I have designed a glow circle battery for my own use, but I decided to post it here so you may use it in case you like it
The battery was developed on a i9000, but I analyzed the framework from captivate and it seems that this procedure will work on captivate also. Please try and feedback.
If you like my work, please consider a small donation to help me continue developing.
Change log:
17.03.2011
-Reorganized the threat so everyone could easily mod his own framework. Follow the new installation instructions
-Added CWM file only with script so you can use it with your framework file safely.
-Uploaded new reorganized image packages.
14.03.2011
-added new charger images. -- Beams -- ( i might rework them in the next days) --
-added missing images for full charge and so on...
-I will modify tomorrow morning the threat, with new reorganised files cause it became a little confusing
03.02.2011
CAUTION:
Flash only if you have DOC's ROm, because some users stated that on Darky they had problems. Not sure why, because it should work - they're both deodexed roms. Do a BACKUP
-Added CWM files for V1, V2 - with percentage and clear at charging
-Working to a new animation for charging, a lot better than this one, but I can;t tell you when it will be ready because I have a lot to work for my school
02.02.2011
Finished creating charging icons and XML editing for animation. I Added two versions of the framework:
-Version 1 : loops the circle animation continuous, without showing the current amount of battery after each loop
-Version 2 : Shows after each loop the amount of battery
01.03.2011
I just created another battery with life indicators on the margins
INSTALLING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Download 3 packs: one with images of the battery (batt1 or batt2), one of the chargers (Glow, or BEAMS) and one of the charging animation images (with percentage and without).
2. Download CWM_update.zip
3. Place the files from the battery pack and charger inside your framework-res.apk file, in /res/drawable-hdpi.
4. Place the file from charging script inside your framework-res.apk file, in /res/drawable
5. put the modified framework-res.apk file inside the framework folder, of the CWM_update.zip.
6. Reboot in CWM.
7. Clear cache.
8. Clear Dalvik.
9. Flash the file.
10 Reboot and enjoy

Nice work dude.
Real nice!
I already used these for a test port. I think it looks better on the computer screen than on the phone. Or it could have been that the other icons need to match better. Actually, i'm sure it would look better in a complete theme.

1. I am refering at the folder drawable, in wich you must put the charging XML, not file drawable.
2. I recomend the CWM update methos, as you might get bootloops or FC with Root Explorer
That may cause some problems dropping a compiled xml in to a different framework as some of the reference ids might be different. Dragging png files in is never a problem though... as long as you can live with the current xml files.

no man, not that;s what i mean. the battery, the charger, and the XML for making the animation are put in separate packages. all these packages must be combined, at your preference, in your framework-res.apk file. (you open the framework-res.apk with WINRAR and then you put the images in the folder drawable-res-hdpi and the xml in drawable. TAKE CARE to save the file with no compression!!! after that, put the file in CWM_updater, in framework folder. THIS FILE (cwm_updater) you will flash with CWM. Got it?

EH17/EH06/EG22 Pulldown Animation with Scrollable Quick Panel
EH17/EH06/EG22 Pulldown no Animation with Scrollable Quick Panel
I've also ran this on EG22 roms as well.
Bugs: null/null on the lockscreen when the music player isn't running.
EH06: Tested on Stock Deodexed EG22 and EH06, Random Rom Hawk v2, and ERA Unnamed with no issues.
EH06: Tested on Urban Decay with one issue. You need to remove email.apk from the theme before you install it.
EH17: Make sure you are familiar with issues reported in Maddoggins mod thread and Crawrjs AIO thread.
EH17: Both Urban Vendetta & Hurricane Rom, Remove Talk.apk from the zip before installing. Both roms have the voice and video version which will cause fc's if the one from the theme isn't removed.
EH17 Lockmod Removal:
I didn't want to rebuild the whole theme just yet so it's a patch the keeps crt, battery mod, overscroll, and adds the scrollable quickpanel, but it has standard animations (I forgot to put the fly ins back in, sorry). It's made up of the framework-res.apk, settings.apk, and the 3 jar files.
Instructions:
This is made to remove from the theme so:
Flash v2.2 theme (If you're not already on it)
In the TSM parts settings: get your settings in there set the way you want. You won't be able to change these later.
Flash the patch.
You will now only have the Epic lock screen.
EH17 v2.3 Changes and instructions.
Wow, where to start with the changes this time around.
Thanks to maddoggin, we now have 11 lockscreen, and Mikey, you get your puzzle lock back in this version.
Blacked out gtalk w/Voice and video!
The transparent MMS is back.
Re did the progress bars to green as it is on Honeycomb.
Included the Voice command and Voice talk. Just awesome apps everyone should have.
I did not update the market yet. It was not cooperating with me at all. Also not including google + as that app is a royal pain in the a$$.
I would recommend you flash this on a fresh rom. Please do not post any issues until you try that.
Gmail or Gtalk fc's: If this happens, make sure there is only one installed in the system/app folder. If you do not know which ones to delete, delete both and reflash the theme. You can also fix plenty of fc issues by wiping the data on that app.

Yup, I'm on the same.
Thanks Shane, few ?'s
I still just want your icons on the notification only, such as the signal, wifi, and etc. Someone on a different thread gave me an answer as to what I needed, but i don't know if simply replacing the right files will brick my phone, or go through.. lol. I'm Deodexed on EG22. I also gave it more of a thought, as to I should just give the whole theme a shot, perhaps enjoying it for a while, would change my mind, I already have a nandroid backup, just wondering, is it just as simple to uninstall as it is to install? or Do I have to Nandroid Restore if I ever choose to remove the theme? Just like to tinker with things, I do appreciate your work. So much that I only want to take a piece of it, and apply it to my own custom experience. =P

You could just try flashing the systemui.apk for the signal bars, but the battery mod it in the framework and for that you'll need the .jar files.
To get rid of it, I would flash maddoggins stock 8lock mod and add the stock version of the apps I themed to the system/app folder of the zip.
Thanks
