Refurb D3 from Asurion - Motorola Droid 3

A week or so ago i dropped my phone in my truck and broke the screen. Asurion sent me a new one the next day and it has been nothing but problems. The battery they sent with it wont last more than 2 or 3 hours with the phone sitting on the desk not being touched. I tried my old battery and it had the same results. I made a nandroid of my old phone and restored it on the new one and nothing worked correctly. I did a full system wipe/restore and the phone seemed to be working but it won't detect a network after a reboot unless i restart the phone again. Asurion is sending me another phone tomorrow so hopefully it will work better than this one. With the battery issues, i tried everything from the forums to calibrate it and turn off things to lenghten but nothing worked. I hope the next replacement is a better device. I love my D3 but i can't live with a phone that has no battery life.
Also, when i did the full system restore, my google account did not sync any of my old information. The market would give me an error (even after accepting the ToS) and none of my contact information (from google or verizon backup manager) made it to the new device.
UPDATE:
Asurion sent me a new D3. Hopefully this one won't suffer from the same problems as the last few.

I always thought a nandroid could only be put on the phone it came from. Even thought its the same model phone. As far as the other issues you are having sorry, it sounds like you got a lemon.

All Asurion phones have a one year warranty through Verizon IIRC. Call them up and ask.

Agree with MrObvious. I just got a replacement D3 from asurion and I couldn't be happier. I guess it is just luck of the draw with the one they send you.
I had a Droid 2 originally.
-1st replacement they gave me the backlight on the keyboard didn't work
-2nd replacement the audio jack crackled when i moved the headphones and the phone restarted itself any time I turned on the GPS.
-3rd replacement was a D3 (current phone) and it has GREAT battery life. (still 90% after a full day of work). Make them replace it for you, they likely will. Good luck man.

It was a lemon
The first one they sent was a lemon. The new one came with a battery that had a charge of 44%. I put it in when i got home, rooted and restored all of my stuff with titanium backup, used the phone for a few hours (light use, few phone calls, some market use), and turned the alarm on for this morning. When i got up this morning it had been roughly 15 hours since i put the battery in without charging and it was at 21%. I think this one will keep me happy for a while.

Good to hear man, glad that you can now enjoy the phone more fully!

Touchscreen Problem(and others)

recently i have been having a lot of problems with my phones. when i bought the phone it was great until about a month ago the accelerometer got messed up and everything went into landscape for no reason, so after two weeks of dealing with that problem i called t-mo and they had me go through the usual troubleshooting steps which i had already tried. they asked if the phone was rooted and i acted like i had no idea what that meant, and they sent a replacement(refurb) about a week into using the refurb i was having really bad battery life of about 20 minutes, i called t-mo again and told them my battery was shot and what was going on. they decided that the phone was broke but they would send me another battery as well.
then i got the phone 4 days ago and it seems now that the touchscreen is going out. i went to pull my notification bar down cause i had an email and my app bar came up, when i tried to close it nothing happened. right now it seems that the entire screen thinks i am touching 3 inches below where i am and so i have been using the phone without touching the screen(not fun), so i called t-mo again. first thing they asked me was if the touchscreen not working was inhibiting my everyday use of the phone, obviously it is affecting my usage of the phone since i got it because it was a touchscreen. t-mo told me after a few minutes of looking up my info that since they have sent three phones out(even though i told them not to on one of them) that i have to take it up with HTC. HTC is telling me that i have to take it up with t-mo. if i am not mistaken all refurbs come with either a 90 day warranty or the remainder of the one year on the original phone whichever comes first. i know there are some t-mo employees here, so please tell me who i should talk to or what i should say to get my phone fixed, this is ridiculous that i got the rufurb and it doesn't even work. aren't they supposed to test each one before they send it out?
thanks in advance guys
Yes they are suppose to test it out but those big companies... ahhh. I'm convinced that T-Mobile should be the company you should talk to for a replacement. They should provide you with another one since it's within the 90 day warranty. If they tell you to talk to HTC tell them HTC told you to talk to them. Not much but I can say Hope you have better luck!
Sounds tough dude! I've been lucky enough to always have re-furbs work for me, but sounds like you're not having my luck :/.
I have an insurance plan with T-Mobile, $7 a month, and lets you replace your phone, no questions asked, anytime you want. You can try seeing if you want to sign up for that and then they take care of it through the company that does the insurance for T-Mobile, and skips HTC and T-Mobile altogether.
Best to call T-Mobile and get them to get in touch with HTC direct to try and solve the issue.
As for the screen always going to Landscape mode, this used to happen to me. I figured out a fix when I noticed the Fancy Animation setting was causing the issue in Spare Parts. I disabled it and the screen was auto-rotating fine.
After disabling the Fancy animations in the settings too and then re-enabling them back and in Spare Parts, all was well.

[Q] Advice on the Captivate....refurbished ?

Thinking of buying a "refurbished" at&t captivate. does anybody have any advice to if the device is worth buying if it is refurbished, if any of you guys have bought it that way..and also is it really worth it in att network or should I be warned and wait till MARCHH! to switch over to another carrier ?
currently have a iphone 3g but i really want to switch over to android
Mine is a insurance replacement so it is refurbed, have had other refurbed phones and haven't had any problemss out of either. I love the phone itself. Go to any sub forum and you can tell the phone has gps issues, some worse then others. This is my 3rd (first couldn't go into recovery, and second was lost), and gps is worse then all the previous ones. Even with the problems, I still wouldn't give this phone up. Probably because I love the hardware and its my first android device and apple wasn't a choice for me. As for the network I hadn't any problems with att since 2004. I'm sure that depends on you location tho.

Two weeks ago I bought the HTC Aria with rebate for $29. Then another employee wrote saying they wanted to upgrade their phone, and wanted the Captivate. I looked online and saw that it was $299. A few days go by and he agrees to the price, and when I go to order it, lo and behold ATT has refurb for $50 each! I bought two, one for him and one for me . I like the aria and it is now my backup, but I love the Captivate and for $50, it's hard to go wrong.
tl;dr, buy it.
Did the refurb unit have any signs of use or scratches or anything? I might get one soon too.
Go for it..it's a great phone. Just make sure you can check it out in person first,or can return it if broken.
Mac
I got a refurb.
And it's perfect. Looks brand new. And no problems
I have a refurb......... no major issues. One thing to look for though.......... I got my first one 4 days ago, worked fine, but after being on for a little bit the battery went completely dead after being on standby for 30 min. yeah, something was wrong with the battery, on top of that it would randomly exit me out of screens.
turned out they sent me one that had NOT been fixed yet, their boo boo. They sent me out a new one and I got it today. This one looked brand new, all the stickers from samsung still on it and everything. Let it charge and turned it on....... no more issues.
It lags a little and the battery life REALLY sux, but those are issues with brand new ones also. I turned on my task killer and put the security level to low so that I could kill everything but non essential apps. Now the battery life seems MUCH better. It seems like this phone takes a long time to charge as well though. I think i wll just allow the battery to fully drain then plug it in, see if that will work, maber get rid of any potential battery memory.
Thanks for the help, appreciate it....I ordered it already and should get it in 2-5 business days so i will post back on my thoughts!
cant wait to start using the android OS!!!!
I am on a refurb now. I love this thing. No [hardware] issues at all.

i have a refubished phone and its better than the new one I had
I got a new Samsung Captivate and it keeps rebooting on me at random and the keys (especially back key) are really bad. They dont recognzie my touch half the time unless I press really hard on them.
My question is....if I get a replacment how will I be able to tell if its a refurb or not?
Are the refubs typically better since they have had more extensive testing?
Anybody have any thoughts on this?
with anything there are defect but these phones are built like a rock and if you think about it, if there is a x probability that a device has a defect the probability that it has 2 is x^2(in theory, obviously the nature of the defect factors in) so if the phone had a defect that was fixed there is a pretty slim chance that it will be defective after it is repaired.
i wouldn't worry about a refurbished phone, there may be cosmetic damage ect. but i would recommend this phone to anyone on build quality alone. wear and tear related problems should be minimal. id say go for it.
I had 3 refurb fuzes and 2 razr9s. Only real problem you have to worry about is physical defects. Hinges mostly. If there is a software or hardware problem you can send it back.
Edit: you can also get insurance on an unused refurb through at&t
From a phone on an app
Any one who has replaced a phone using insurance or warranty thru ATT is most likely using a refurbed phone. I have replaced every phone i have ever had in 10 years with ATT due to my being really hard on phones at work and all the replacements have been refurbed. I personally have never had an issue with a refurb, they all lokked and performe like new. I actually just got my cappy a few weeks ago and ordered the refurb cause i knew i would end up with one anyway.( and got lucky in doing so and got a batch 1007 phone so my 3button download mode doesnt get wiped.)
Works Perfecly and only set me back $50
I messed up my first captivate. Was able to return it through warranty and got a refurbished unit. I have been using it for 3 months with no issues. Of coarse there is no guarantee

Anyone been able to get a different phone from Verizon for data/signal issues?

I've been having so many issues w/ data and signal, im just wondering if I put enough pressure is there any way I could get Verizon to give me a different phone?
My phone is close to unusable how often I don't have signal and im just really tired of it..

Well the update from Moto is suppose to fix this issues, so Verizon may make you wait til you receive the update before looking into swapping a phone for you.
The Restart Connections app from the market doesn't work for you? It works for me about 90% of the time when I lose my signal. Rarely I will have to reboot to get signal back.

I haven't tried that, ill try it but they promised me an update by early nov, and they've given me already 2 months of free service. I dont care about getting free service id rather pay instead of the hassle... I was just thinking they might since there highest level of support saying it was a known issue they were responsible for and had moto working on an update. Sucks I paid full retail on launch day and have only had problems..

I take it you can only complain to Verizon if you bought the device from them.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC
Yea Verizon definitely knows of the problems. Its common. Verizon will eventually offer you a new phone but it may not be something you want. If the problem isn't fixed after the update and they persist they will probably offer some better replacements.
I don't really have a big problem with connection but it is there. Some days it doesn't happen at all. Someone on another forum said they received an update from Moto already, so hopefully they start rolling out soon.

I actually have a new one arriving today. My data loss is horrible. It will show full bars (3g and 4g) but the second I go to do something the data will drop. Extremely frustrating and annoying. I'm pretty sure I'm getting a refurb but if it holds data better I'm ok.
EDIT: Just wanted to add that is the FIRST time I've ever done a warranty replacement in 6 years with Verizon. Wasn't terribly difficult...

If you just got another Bionic, your problems aren't going to go away. I got my warranty replacement last week; same issues.
They did offer me a new phone; anything but the Razr. Considering I not only bought the phone at launch, but bought a couple hundred dollars in accessories...I want the phone to work as advertised; not a new phone.
Well the week before Thanksgiving I was actually sucessful of having the store giving me an actual off the floor replacement. Up until that time I have taken my phone into 4 different corporate stores in and around Cincinnati and each time The associate looked at the phone and just ordered their "certified like new" replacement shipped to my home. Now I want you all to know these "certified" units were nothing more than returns to VZW from others that are experiencing the same thing. I went out of my way to take the phone into the closest store when I experienced either the loss of data or the BSOD situation.
This time I tried something different which got me a brand new phone..not sure what pushed them over the edge though....On the 23rd of November I got the dead BSOD and immediately took the phone back to the origional store which I purchased it on the 12th of September and cornered my origional salesperson explaining that I have had four replacements...I sternly request for him to correct this problem WITHOUT pulling the battery....The store was moderately heavy with customers who had a ear tuned to my complaint. He was insistant that he had to pull the battery after plugging in a charger...I loudly told him to stop and demanded for customer service to be put on the line because I insisted pulling the battery was going to do nothing more than set me up with a return trip. He told me that all customer service was going to do is issue out another "certified" unit...Loudly I protested that this has to come to an end because all of the screen protectors he had sold me during the origional purchase are now gone and the battery life is degrading fast due to the constantly seeking for data problem. Everybody knows VZW does not ship a new battery or battery door with these "certified" units ( of course). As I would not budge on the "certified" route because my battery and battery door was showing signs of premature wear...the manager stepped in and allowed me to turn in my unit for another right out of the box...printed out a receipt for the return full price and then gave me a new receipt with the same price but with the november date. He told the associate to mark the unit defective screen out of box. Now he didnt allow me to have the new battery or door BUT I got a new unit which I am happy to report has not had a hiccup since...knock on wood. BUT BE FOR WARNED...if you are sucessful at getting a off the floor exchange...check your account because the billing dept of VZW thinks this is a upgrade and will sneak a updated contract date in on your account....It took two calls into customer service to explain to them this was not an upgrade and after they tell you that it has been noted....TAKE THE TIME to check online your contract date is put back to the origional date.
After a little bit of work I am a happy Bionic VZW customer
Have you guys tried the SIM pull trick? My Bionic has not had a data problem since. I did this over a month ago.
1) turn off Bionic and pull SIM
2) power on the bionic and open phone. It will state the SIM is missing.
3)turn off the Bionic and insert SIM
You will need a pair of fine tweezers for this.

This won't help if you need the 4G throughput (for hotspot, etc), but my data connection is rock solid on the go if i choose CDMA Only mode under Mobile Networks.
I've taken to changing to LTE Only mode in the field testing interface (##PROGRAM) when I need to use LTE throughput for hotspot, and that, too, is rock solid. The problem seems to occur for me only when it's switching between CDMA and LTE.

Pulling the SIM did nothing for me, unfortunately. I'd demand a new (and different) phone, but I spent about $150 on accessories and don't want to unload those for pennies on FleaBay.
Its all 4g phones. If u want reliable service. Switch back to a 3g only device. After 3 Droid charges, Verizon sent me this bionic. .. still having issues. Just gotta get use to it

so i noticed for the last two days my 4g and 3g are going out not just a couple seconds either it for a good amount of time 10 to 15 minutes at a time anyone have a idea why this is or how to reslove this called verizon they don't have any outages at all worked fine for the previous 2 to 3 weeks that i had the phone with no issues what so ever...

The locked bootloader isn't really a problem. You can still do a lot of stuff. We have some awesome roms, themes and hacks along with a great community with lots of helpful people
I can not say this will help you, but it helped me with the same problem, this is a fix I found on rootzwiki i believe, i forget the authors name but the fix is not mine and it is simple and gives me good connection for about 1-3 weeks before i have to do it again.
turn off your phone, pull battery, and sim card, replace battery and turn phone back on and let it boot up, turn phone off and replace sim card, turn phone backup, that is it. What I have read is that this refreshes your sim connection to Verizon, I have no idea if this is the case or not.
I did also find that when I activated an old phone to update some software in it and then tried to reactivate my Bionic the web site did not let me activate my sim card with the numbers it had on the card itself, so I called up Verizon and jumped through some hoops and they activated my sim card and had very good data connection after that for about a month. Just a reminder if you are rooted don't tell them that.
Hope this helps a bit.
My data still is not %100 but getting much closer when I pop the sim card in and out.
So what else is new.....
I am in Los Angeles, an area blanketed with 4G. I have a solid 4G connection at home 99.5% of the time. My first 4G phone was a Samsung Droid Charge and while I liked it I often found in my travels that I would have 0 connectivity and all my 3G friends would be surfing along just fine.
I thought it was my device and ended up going through 5 Charges and now Verizon has given me a Bionic and guess what, exact same performance (well, in terms of connectivity). I find it hard to believe that 6 phones by 2 manufacturers exhibit the same problem so concluded it had something to do with the geography of my travels and the associated towers and hand-offs.
I then read, and totally believe THIS
Thanks that worked great and you last posted good to know!!!!

Well I am on the. 901 update and on the same day I got a new sim card. And my connection was completely solid..... for two days. After that the drops were as bad as ever. I dunno I am just gettin tired of it. Maybe I should have spent the extra money to get the rezound. I am. Just frusterated. I really appreciate this idea. I will keep trying it for a while.

Have had mine for close to two weeks. Data drops weren't a problem until a day or two in. Figured out that at least for me, it was my own doing. Some of you are probably the same, while others are something different.
Settings>Data & Battery Manager>Battery Mode>
From here you have several options. I had set mine up on custom one night, while half asleep, laying in the bed, playing with my new phone.
This morning it dawned on me, after thinking that it seemed a lot like Juice Defender acts when it takes a while to register data again. I went back in and changed it from a custom profile, to Performance Mode. Voila....
All day long and not single data drop.
Hope this helps some of you.
I have had 1, 5 second drop since updating to .901. I would urge anyone that is having serious data drop issues to try it. It is a signed update and is supported by Verizon and Motorola. They can't void your warranty or anything for updating to it.
How would go about. 901 do I gave to root anyway to push this to phone without root

Should I take the replacement bionic?

905 stock rooted and I was having data drops like crazy last week. I have had a bionic since launch and have never had any data problems. Last week was terrible, couldn't hold a 4g connection (blue to white constantly). They sent me a new Sim card, it seemed to make it worse the first 2 days, so I asked for a replacement phone. Well after the first 2 days on the new sim, my bionic starting working flawlessly again. Now I have a replacement phone sitting here that I don't think I need. Should I send back the replacement? Or take the certified "like new"? Am I better off keeping my original? Help me decide, thanks!
I feel like it was a network error on Verizon's part, not an issue with my sim card but guess I'll never know.

I too am having the same connectivity issues. Blue/White strobe. They're sending me another Bionic. I fully expect the new one to have the same issues. Two of my friends have the same phone; both are having the same issue ever since the .905 upgrade.
Try this...
Power off pull the SD card. Power on fully. Power off. Reinsert the SD card and power on.
Don't ask! I read this somewhere and was willing to try anything and....oddly enough, it worked.
Thanks to the forgotten tipster.

I add the step of take out sim card, when removing the sd card, which i read at droidhive.com when it existed.
