Sorry guys for using this section but it is the only one for the 8.9
I would like to buy one tablet but I'm wavering between the 8.9 and the new 7 plus
the 8.9 is cheaper but the 7 plus can make phone call and got a microsd slot
help me to make this choice
thanks
For what will the tablet be used? Will you still carry a separate phone?
usually I carry another phone but in summer a bring on beach just the galaxy tab 7
If you plan using it as an extension then I think you already have made your mind.
Sent from my GT-P7310
+1 i will go for 8.9 for it bigger screen
I use my Nokia n9 as a phone, my MacBook air as a laptop, my tab 8.9 as a reference material viewer. I think I wouldn't be happy with a 7" screen, my physics books won't view well.
Then again I can't tell until I try it :-D
make phone call is a good features sd the sd slot
I think I will take the 7 plus (7.7 would be perfect but probably will be out on 2012)
I had a 10.1, but sold it for a 7.0 plus, and highly recommend it. The Exynos is screaming fast compared to the Tegra 2. This is especially obvious while playing video.
Video is truly night and day, I can't believe how lousy the Tegra is for that. The 7+ will play any and all video I threw at it. But dang, the size of the 8.9 is perfect. Hopefully Samsung will give it the upgrade and the best of both worlds.

I agree on all counts. That would be the perfect tablet.

I am a happy owner of an unrooted 7+ and I have yet to run into a 720p video in any codec or bitrate that the little bastard could not run perfectly smooth. I have no RMVB videos but I can't imagine it will have huge issues but if you send me a link for such a video then I will be happy to test it out for you.
As for the topic of the thread:
I have the 10.1 as well and the Tegra 2 is a travesty. It is a horrid and terrible product which should never have been allowed to be used as the reference chip for Honeycomb. For this reason I went with the 7+. If anyone thinks everyone with a 10.1 is cheerful with a Tegra 2 running then you have not watched the threads prior to the nation wide USA release of the 10.1. Even after the 10.1v was confirmed as using the Tegra 2 we still held out a glimmer of hope for the Exynos 4210 and a MicroSD slot. The 7+ has both of these and I even found it at 350$ with 3.5% sales tax at Microcenter.

Does this issue only happen during video playback or any graphics in general? I thought Tegra 2 is supposed to be very good! :|
I do notice some lag even when using the homescreen in 10.1, din test 7+ enough to tell, after I have tested 10.1 and 8.9, the 7+ seems just too small! And I am worrying about the future support (ICS) for 7+ as it seems the odd tab with that resolution. As with Samsung products, the ones that gets updated are those that are popular, and looking at how thing goes, seems like 10.1/8.9 is (going to be) more popular.
10.1 with the HW accelerated homescreen roms works fairly well unless you want to watch video. Honestly I only want a tablet that can play the stuff on my computer while I lay in bed and the B&N Nook Tablet almost managed it but the 7+ got it down 100%. Holding my 10.1 after using the 7+ was fun though. So huge in comparison.

I feel the exact same way about my (ex) NT. But the locked bootloader killed it for me, and I'm back to the search for the optimal tablet for me. How would you say the 7+'s screen compares to the NT? I really loved that I could sit outside and see everything perfectly on that screen. Would you say it's worth the extra cash and not waiting for the 7.7 (assuming the 7.7 isn't actually $700, as speculated)?

I just returned my NT and picked up the 7+. No regrets at all! I was betting on the 7.7 not being out for a while and being too expensive. so I went ahead and took the plunge. If the 7.7 comes out soon and is reasonably priced, I'll throw the 7+ on eBay, and eat the difference.

Not to be annoying and reiterate my question, but how does the screen compare? More specifically, how does it look outdoors? I really want to buy a replacement tablet, but great visibility in all lighting conditions is a huge factor. Reviews that I've read so far haven't really addressed this, with even some mildly negative comments about the 7+ screen.
It's a gloss screen so I doubt it would be perfect outdoors but it's not horrible in my limited experience. It's a bit darker than the screen in the 8.9 or 10.1 but it doesn't have viewing angle problems it's still a Samsung screen. Just naturally a tad darker at default.
I used to own the 1st Galaxy TAB P1000; it has no problem handling *.MKV files even with size more than 2 GB. Likewise for the 8.9. But for RMVB files it is a challenge. I tried the same files on a IPAD2. It faces the same problem . There are jerkiness . Try to get the files from www.33md.com

Maybe your app is better, or maybe your videos are lower resolution. My 10.1 (with a handful of apps I tried) barfed on 1080p pretty hard.

Guys, I want to share with you
I finally realize that the money I spend out to buy nook color is not worth it. beside used for browsing, youtube, playing game, I also want to use it for playing video, however when I try to play MKV files, the video and sound is out of sync, and when I try to play AVI file in mobo player, it can't be played and I switch to use QQPlayer and it plays fine however some frame is skipping so the video seems a bit laggy. THIS IS SO DISAPPOINTING, nowadays most video files are in MKV format, why this tablet is not supporting to play MKV video compare to other tablets?
FOr the same price I can get tabulet (tablet from china), it can play video file well compare to nook, the only problems maybe it will have slower update compare to phiremod. Now tell me, why you wanna buy a Nook color while the same amount of money can be used to buy other tablets or top up a bit to buy other tablet that can play video files.
What speed is your SD? I am running Gingerbread on a 16GB class 6 card and have no issues playing AVI files in Moboplayer.
If I was looking to buy a tablet today I would not buy a Nook, got mine for $200. But would instead buy the Asus Transformer if they ever get any in stock.
I also have no problem playing videos. That said, I've never tried an MKV file, as I've never heard of it. So I definitely can't support your assertion that most videos are in the format these days. But I'll have to trust you that the NC has troubles playing it.
I have no trouble playing mkv files using mobo player. I am using CM7 with OC Kernel 04/24.
Im watching the rite now on my nook color as we speak. Its very smooth and I'm using Mobo. So I dont see what you are talking about
Nook Color is an ereader that some people have converted to general tablet use. There is no reason why it would have its own video player.

Hopefully it's still not too late for you to return the Nook. The Nook was never known for it's multimedia capabilities. It was designed and marketed as an e-Reader. It's great that the dev community is able to enhance the capabilities of the device. Good luck!

i am using phiremod 6.2 with 720p quality, how about yours? I guess must be 480p quality
I got my NV on Saturday then rooted it and put CM7.0.2 stable on the emmc (not SD). I converted three movies in Handbrake using recommended settings found on XDA to MP4. I use Rockplayer and it works great. The movies are about 900mb in size with running length about 1hr 45 min and no problems.
The only video/audio sync issue I saw was using MLB.TV app but the is a common problem with MLB app. Playon MLB app works fine.

Phiremod 6.2 IS CM7, with some extra skinning.
Anyway, a little research will go a long way. The Nook does not have the hardware to play most 720P movie; though Mobo player will play a few quite well. The built in hardware decoding can only do up to 480P, and Mobo player, using certain CPU decoding pieces, can do some 720P.
BUt as it is, you would have known all this if you had just done some research beforehand. Video on the nook is a hot topic, and not something you would have to dig deep to find out about, including its weaknesses.
And please... what a load about the Chinese players. Yes, you can get a crap tablet for $150... that has a low res resistive screen, Android 2.1, no community, and no support (oh, and looks like a bad iPad knockoff to boot). But please, since you alone seem to know about them, please point us to another knockoff tablet that has such an amazing screen, great hardware (all that can hit 1.1Ghz, and most that can hit 1.3Ghz), for $200-$225 (best buy was having a $25 gift card sale recently)..
same, try rockplayer, works for me.. running rooted stock and draggin-dropping .avi's to a class 16 class 2 sd, they play fine.

if you know nothing about tabulet (china tablet that rebrand by indonesia company), then don't say anything. Though it is 700mhz it can play video well,
so what if nook can be overclocked to 1,3Ghz? Is there so many apps that is running in background that need the speed? It is not a pc, it is a tablet mostly for single or two task for simple like listening to music while reading, it is not for running many apps behind the scene such as rendering video or encoding
the different between those china tablet and nook is their graphic capabilities. Those china tablet, viewsonic tablet or asus tablet has better VGA and hardware decoding features that enable them to play video smoothly, unlike nook which is merely an over expensive e-reader that both expensive and yet unable to play video files well. And FYI, tabulet or china tablet is now moving to capacitive, though not much is capacitive but most new product is in capacitive screen, so forget about your idea that telling you all china tablet is resistive!
So go buy a "china tablet" then. What's the point in whining about something that everyone knows about beside trolling?

Indeed. Everywhere I turn, I'm seeing more and more [email protected] tablets that are either running an old version of Android, have paltry memory, low res, horrible battery life, etc. Often times, it's a combination of ALL of these things. DealExtreme carries several pretty horrible tablets.
Innosia: That sucks that the nook isn't satisfying your needs. I can understand your frustration. What are you expecting by whining about it here? Do you want us to pass the plate around to fund a replacement for you? The only thing you're going to get, particularly here, is a lot of indignation. Again, that sucks that it doesn't do what you need it to do. Sell the damned thing on eBay or Craigslist before it declines further in value and buy yourself something that suits your needs.
I dont really see what the big deal is, reencode the videos. Itunes does that for IPOD/ipad devices, why cant you do that for the nook? Are you just saying your too lazy to use a template and reencode some videos you want to watch?
The nook was never marketed for its multimedia skills. The fact that it has a hw decoder at all, is pretty lucky. for 250 its the best device i found out there. it does everything i would want out of it. If i wanted more, i would have bought an IPAD.

I am not rich and I already cheated to buy nook and not able to afford a new tablet unless selling this one, I am not whining or trolling, what I am trying to point out here is for newbie who want to buy nook color, hopes they dont fall to the trap in buying nook color if they need playing video. I am just warning them, so they can use their money wisely. Be careful for B&N over expensive e-reader sales team
What were you expecting from a hack eReader?
Be serious. Its an ereader. All the rest is gravy. Whatever else you can do with it (besides read books) is awesome. Stop whining long enough to understand what you DID buy and what you DIDN'T buy. When you recognize the absolute awesomeness of what you bought has become you'll thank these fine folks for all their hard work.
Thanks everyone for all the hard work, done on your own time, for nothing in return.
I really appreciate it! Cheers m8s.
It sounds like you want a video-player more than a tablet. I'm wondering why you would come on here to post about how bad the NC is for your purposes? From all the posts I read it seems like you could easily read on here about what video types work and how to get them working smoothly. If you want something working out of the box, then return the nook and get it. If you want to fiddle with the thing until things work, then keep the NC. Simple
Sell it on eBay for about as much as you bought it for. They're still going for pretty high.
As has already been pointed out, re-encoding the video into an appropriate format does wonders for allowing it to play properly on the non-multimedia optimized nook.
FWIW, I've also noticed that different players have better luck with different formats. I currently have 3 video players installed (yx, Vital, and QQ) and have found that one of them will almost always properly play any of the couple hundred video's I already have on my media server.
Between iPhones, Xbox, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and some random other netbooks and devices, I've gotten a lot of experience at getting video to work on a lot of platforms. It would be great if AirVideo decided to do an Android client.
Hi everyone,
I will be upgrading in late Feb. The options are: another s2 or Note.
Love my s2 (rooted with Illusion-xT v1.4.2 - XWKL1 2.3.6) , played a bit with Note and its size is not a problem for me.
I really have no time to go through the forum to find my answers.
I'd like to know:
- the battery life compared to s2
- does Note do everything that s2 does?
- call recording quality pls, does anyone use Total Recall?
- application compatibility with s2
- overall performance compared to s2
- your experience if you are owning both s2 and Note
- TV out - like in s2?
Thanks a lot guys!

About roughly the same, the 250mAH is to feed the huge screen. I get the same video playback time of 9hrs on the S2 and on the Note. Gaming might suffer since it needs to compute for more pixels.

Some say the note lags/UI stutters more than the Galaxy S2.. this is only true when you use the pinch to view the home screen or the app drawer which is a TW issue, anything other than that the Note does things FASTER than the S2 which is expected as it is a better device even under the hood.

I find it difficult to now use a phone with anything less than 5.3" of a screen, this is one major drawback once you get attached to the Galaxy note.
Altho both phones are not with out its issues, faces similar issues on both ends though
You havent asked this but the GPS on the Gnote is amazing, you can even get a signal lock indoors all of this due to the GLONASS that it has, but its not that accurate as compared to dedicated GPS devices yet.
Thank you EarlZ
Yes I ve forgotten to ask about GPS as I am gonna use my Copilot and Sygic very often.
What about TV-out - the same as s2?
Howdy.
Typed up a quick compairison between the two if you wanna take a moment to read it here.
One thing that I didn't mention in that post is TV out, and it's exactly the same as you would do so on a GSII; plug in an MHL adapter.
I personally haven't used GPS on the phone enough to count, but everyone else who has, has said it's the best they've used thus far. Much better than a GSII
If you go for it, you'll love it.
And hey! If you're not satisfied with it, go ahead and sell it and use those funds for either a new GSII or, when the time comes, put it towards it's successor.
But I doubt you'll want to once you get your hands on this baby

Just took a quick peek at your post and I noticed you mention at 25% there is no issue viewing it under direct sunlight? I even have issues with the S2 or the note at 100% brightness under direct sunlight well ofcourse this varies how bright the sun is shining though.

I've personally never noticed any issues. It could very well be that any light that I was under wasn't 100% dead on, but my Note screen is always one of two brightness levels: 25% and 0%. I've never had a need to crank it any more.
Are you a big guy? (ie 6" + ?)

Used on both. More or less the same, yes.
For both devices, however, the system UI outputs at native resolution. So when you're web browsing or just going through menus and such, the S2 is at 800x480, the Note is 1280x800; noticeable difference.
I will say though, that the Note does seem to slow down quite a bit when hooked up to the TV for moving about the UI or playing games and such (mainly because, not only does it have to render 3x as many pixels already, but now it's doing it twice over(!!!), it's quite a burden, and it shows.
That said, it's still (mostly) functional, and when using it for video output (even full 1080p), it is flawless there.
P.S. I'm selling my international GS2 if you're interested. Send me a PM

This phone is pretty good, but not good enough if compared with the more recent ones.. I mean if you want more Battery Life, Gaming Performance and more (future) Official updates or Dev support then you can opt for better, more popular Mid-Range phones (according to your budget)...
But still this phone is pretty good, better than Galaxy R and closely related to the all famous S2!
And yes two more things:
- I never tried playing 1080p videos, so I don't know whether it will work or not.. but I have a lot of 720p videos (and movies) - and they all have lag free playback on the stock video player... The only 720p video that lags for me is the default Samsung Sample Video :silly:
- You can play most of the games on this phones, but most high end games or too resource demanding 3D games won't play well on Highest settings...
I was an iPhone user before and this is my first Android phone.. but yeah this is still a pretty good phone, but there are better phones (maybe at same cost)..
Take a look at this thread too.. I gave my review on S3 Mini vs SGSA on that thread...

Some of those points are really foolish sorry...For example, the HSDPA speed is the same and it doesn't have HSPA+...our phone supports microSDHC too(someone tried microSDXC and it worked too...weird)...the original s3 mini hasn't NFC,there is a I8190N version with that.
Also,I don't think it will get Key Lime Pie if the Note,S2 and ours will not get it just because it is newer.Remember the S plus case(gigngerbread as the original S)
Not trying to flame, just correcting you.
In conclusion if solid multitasking isn't your thing,at my opinion S advance makes it because it has better front camera and an ambient light sensor. Also I like the design more...because it's smaller S3 mini doesn't look as good the S3.I saw them both.
You can't play 1080p videos with the stock video player. At heavy games the single core Mali says its word.
If you want a better phone just buy the S2.Better screen, ram and processor. Also the developement support is waay greater because of a biiiig user base.In my country, the difference is just like 25 euros.
I might switch to the S2 too...

At heavy games the single core Mali says its word.

well yeah of course, you're right... even I hate the shape both S3 and S3 mini has.. in my opinion, S2 and our phone has a better and solid look and feel...

Thanks a lot for your input guys! :good: I am considering some other phones like Galaxy Note N-7000 and Sony Xperia L.
The last thing I wanna know is whether the sound output is actually low as some reviewers are saying.
Thanks again!

We can't play 1080P Videos on this phone. When I use video players other than stock,it play only audio.

I've been reading on some new and not so new reviews from sites like gsmarena, phonearena, androidcentral, android authority engadget etc. And all the reviews have been glowing except for the verge well because it's theverge lol. Do u guys agree with most of the reviews?
I agree about the display, to an extent. The black are great on Netflix and the movie Gravity (Galaxy Gift), but when you watch streaming services from Cable provider, (Comcast Xfinity), the blacks have extreme Pixelation and ghosting. It gets so bad that it's annoying and ruins the whole viewing experience.
isnt that comcast's fault though?
So far no alarmingly bad review so im excited to pick this baby up along with a gear fit

It shouldn't be. The movies and TV shows are broadcast in HD. it works fine on my Asus Infinity Transformer. I read that the Netflix and youtube apps were optimized for this device.
So I have a feeling all other media will suffer.

ah i see well lets hope that gets tackled too in newer reviews but i remember josh from android authority watched breaking bad on it and he seemed to not have any issues.
by the way, how do you like the color scheme? gsmarena says its kinda gaudy but in android central forums they say the bronze is nice
I just streamed the latest Star Trek movie on Netflix and it was absolutely gorgeous. Same thing with Avengers. Remember you need to give the player about 30 seconds to buffer before judging the picture quality. Once the full HD buffers it looks amazing. HD YouTube content is also glorious.

The Verge can write an entire review talking about how perfect and amazing something is then end up docking it two stars because it ISN'T APPLE. CNET is same way. According to these guys you would think the single most important feature of a tablet is what the back of the damned thing is made of.
I love the tab but hate the gold/gray....better than white...but why the tacky gold?????
As I said in my previous post. Youtube and Netflix have been optimized for this device. So the picture is going to be amazing. It's other streaming and video services that may suffer. Such as my Xfinity Go App, Crackle . All the blacks gets extreme Pixelation and ghosting. It's horrible

At first I thought the same about the gold but now I don't even notice it. I have a white 10.5 with titanium book cover and honestly it looks pretty good.
Remember this tablet is made by Asians and Asians love gold. I think they did it to get away from the "cheap materials" moniker. Also to make it look different than the Pro line.
8.4 ESPN Go
Watching ESPN waiting on the game, the picture is gorgeous. Go USA!
this ipad lover gave it a very good review :highfive:

The reviews that "count" are the ones from real users at retail sites like BestBuy. Right now the Tab S 10.5 is getting 4.9 out of 5 stars with about 40 or so reviews in. If you know BestBuy, scoring anywhere close to a perfect 5.0 is rare.
Most of these guys that do reviews for tech sites have an altar to iPad in their bedroom at home. And yeah, TheVerge hates everything, lol. I've seen them give a review with nothing but superlatives thoughout then in their conclusion call the device "disappointing" and give it 7.5 stars. They enjoy being snobs.

Nope, it's Samsung GPU not processing the HD video properly. It's not only comcast but there are other websites that's showing this on the tab s too. My iPad displays all the same video just fine. I hope it's just software and Samsung will have a fix in it's next update because I'm a tv show buff and this is not acceptable for such a beautiful amoled tablet.
Yeah and the verge knock a star off Samsung tabs for being "too pricey" when there the same price as the iPad which has less specs but they never mention the price on them. Isheel

So far on YouTube, Netflix and Hulu my 10.5 GPU has performed flawlessly. That leads me to believe this problem is only a software patch away as the GPU is well up to the task with many popular streaming sites.
Quote from the Men's Journal review above:
Compared with the iPad mini with Retina display, the Tab S - even with a higher resolution - never felt sluggish. We put it to the test by reading the entire book Unbroken using the Google Play app. The result? No raging headache. Even movies looked better: The Liam Neeson thriller Non-Stop had more vibrant colors than an iPad mini, which we watched*side-by-side with the Samsung during the same action scene. Once the movie started, the display became brighter and more saturated, maintaining its clear picture*both indoors*and out. You can thank the tablet's Super AMOLED display and its adaptive features, which streamline the switch*between a movie and a book without having to manually adjust the way the screen looks (brightness, colors, saturation)*every time.

Although I do not doubt the honesty of those experiencing lag, stutter and generally poor performance, I think the feedback from the marketplace is telling us this may be isolated and by my guess, the result of a bad batch of parts. The percentage of those experiencing problems in this forum while still a minority is probably disproportionately large as those having problems come to forums such as these seeking help while those who are satisfied do not.
so I've used the xfinity app and watched some stuff and honestly my black levels look fine, just like Netflix does...

Penny Dreadful is where I saw it at its worse. It was horrible.
So far I've only been playing Injustice and Galaxy On Fire 2.
Do you have a favorite or suggestion to really show off the power of this tablet?
haha nice question but i would like samsung to at least put 2 of the demo videos they have into the tablet just to show them off to friends ohhh look at this amazing display haha. then delete them when you're sick of them

I too have been playing GoF2 and it is amazing on the AMOLED screen. The other three that I play and look exceptional due to the screen are Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition, Shadowrun Returns and Osmos HD. I am always looking for more so any suggestions would be great.
XBMC HD Videos look really nice on this tablet. At least my time watching GOT on this tablet has been a good experience.
The preinstalled video Wonder of Nature is a good one to show it off

It looks beautiful but.... runs good? I have the Asus Transformer Infinity TF701 with the Tegra 4. I ran the games side by side. On ultra settings the Tegra 4 is MUCH smoother and polished. When running on the Samsung, you feel a bit of stutter. My game play suffered a bit until i got use to it. It seems to clear up on the lower graphic setting.

Timescapes 1440p Video
Anyone here can try to find and download this video. Timescapes 1440p Video. Search for it. It is 1440p and plays flawlessly with MX Player. It is must have demo material. Whoever watches it will be blown away. Must have for this device. It is about 6GB so an External SD would be ideal.

Dunno, his Tab S seems to stutter on everything. He should really look into replacing that thing. I wasn't surprised it was smooth either. I mean it's not Battlefield 4 after all .

Unfortunately FAT32 external SD cards have a 4GB file size limit, so even that won't help. I would love to find a few clips from this. I think I could split it myself, but I'm afraid I won't be able to do it properly without losing quality through re-encoding. I'm no pro when it comes to that kind of stuff.
Great suggestion though.
Format your card in ExFat file system and no longer be a 4gb limited victim!
