I get awesome service with pinnacle. Im ready to give CM a shot again, but would like to use the same modem, if its possible.
If not, whats a similar modem? (prob a dumb question) My dad lives near the beach, and with pinnacle, my phone works like it does anywhere else. Last time i used apex and cm, and the service was awful when i was there.
Pinnacle uses kjX and you cannot use it on cm7 because of CM7 uses different types and configurations of modems

Partially true. You can't flash that KJ3 specifically but you can flash the KJ3 made for CM7
Here is CM7/MIUI list of I897 modems, Here is theI9000 CM7/MIUI
Btw hit thanks to Soggy for his site. The original thread is stickied in Dev section.

I've never tried it so maybe something has changed, but isn't he going to have voice call issues with an i897 modem on CM7?

Well that was unnecessary. I do read: I read your comment, thought "Wow, that's something I didn't know, I didn't think you could do that." Then I then spent 10 minutes reading posts from people, both on this forum and others, saying what I had previously thought, which was that you can flash that modem on CM7 but that the call quality sucked. Obviously I'm missing something, so I figured I'd ask for clarification.
That's how people learn. Just not from you apparently.

Thanks. I always thought they were just packaged differently for CM, I didn't know that they were actually different somehow.
I do help people, people that try hard before they give up... You are correct about them just being packaged differently, if you want a modem from a stock ROM, then just drop the modem.bin in the zip replacing the other. IT WILL WORK LIKE THAT

I still couldn't find anywhere that supported that i897 modems will work on CM7 without static, so I just downloaded KJ3 from the link above and flashed it. Data works fine, signal strength is good, incoming audio is alright, but the outgoing audio is static-y. Not as bad as I would have expected, you can usually make out what is being said, but far from stellar.
lourivellini, by all means try it, it definitely won't break anything.

How much static are we talking about? If the person on the other side cant hear me, ill probably just try something else.
Im on CM7 now, and i think my signal has been slightly worse, but im primarily concerned with the standby battery drain. Im thinking it might be because of the modem, but who knows.

Give it a try and decide for yourself. It won't break anything and you can always flash something different if you don't like it.
Modems definitely do affect battery life, so just try a variety of them and find one that works well for you. JK4, KG3, JJJV5, JJJW2, KC1, and ZNKP1 have all worked well for me, but it depends a lot on where you live.

Going to try it out tonight. Is flashing a modem as easy as just booting into the recovery and flashing the zip file?
Thinking back to the last time i used CM. I remember using a different phone for a few days, but leaving cm on my phone and using it without a sim in it.
Without the sim, The standby drain was normal, or very close to normal. With the SIM in, there was a big difference, and the 5+ percent drain per hour continued. It was connected to wifi the whole time in both cases.
This makes me think the modem might be the problem. I just dont get why im having such a bad time with the stock CM modem and other people are fine with it. Could it have anything to do with the way i flashed the phone?
This is my method:
Coming from pinnacle 1.2
deleted all stuff off of SD
used jig to get in dl mode
flashed back to stock jf6 with one click
Enabled debugging
signed in to google
downloaded rom manager
**from rom manager, i first flashed samsung galaxy captivate clockworkmod
(theres no recovery installed, i need to install this first because i can choose mtd)
then i choose captivate mtd 2.xx
place cm nightly and gapps on sd card
reboot into recovery
install zip > select rom
once thats done then i flash gapps
Not running any crazy apps fyi.
Should i try a new modem, or a new kernel first? and what is the stock kernel if i have to go back.
Thanks again!

Alright guys, getting a little bored with the stock ROM! What is the best ROM floating out there? Are all the ROM's just easily done with a update.zip file, or do you usually have to use Odin?
Depends on what you're looking for... official Captivate firmwares other than JF6 are all internal test builds ATM. As far as ROMs go there's a decent variety of options to choose from, but they all depend on your personal preference.
However you've come in at sort of a transitional period, we've got lag fix kernels, we've got OC kernels, and we've got kernels that make I9000 ROMS work properly on the Captivate, but all of those things aren't yet merged.
I recommend you keep on reading, check out the different threads, figure out what suits you, and if you don't find what you're looking for- wait a week, I'm sure someone will come up with it

the i9000 ROMs are generally cleaner (less bloat, a little more streamlined). they're also more recent for the most part. they have other features that really comes down to user preference though. I enjoyed the i9000 ROM I ran much more than the stock captivate one.
I suggest trying it and comparing it to how you used JF6 and go with whichever feels better to you. Each ROM has it's own bugs. Last time I ran an i9000 ROM was JM5 and it refused to clear message/e-mail alerts unless you manually backed all the way out, can't say if it's fixed yet with later releases.

They're a bit more mature development-wise. The I9000 has been on the market longer is and is ATM Samsungs "baby" so they're getting all the newest updates. In addition their firmwares don't include any of the bloat that the Captivate has since international carriers don't care about stupid crap like "AT&T Navigator"- they also don't care if people can sideload.
Don't get me wrong, cross pollinating I9000 ROMS can have their own little annoyances, like flaky haptic feedback and scuh, but the reorient kernel takes care of the really big issues.
One thing you should REALLY look into before you start flashing ANYTHING is whether or not your phone is capable of using button combinations to get into recovery and download mode. Some of the newer handsets arent. A good starting point would be to turn off your phone... let it shut down completely, then hold both volume buttons and power on. If you get into the recovery menu, GREAT.
Next step (Assuming you passed the first), power off your phone, hold both volume buttons, and plug in USB, if you get the android guy with the shovel that means you're good to go, you'll have to yank battery to reset from this point, but this verifies you can achieve download mode, which means game on for careless flashing!

I've seen mention of people being unable to achieve that. I presumed they were just getting the timing wrong.
So if you fail that, does it mean you are unable to change ROM?
no,it just means that you will have to be more careful, and that you may not be able to fix your phone if anything goes wrong.
my 2 cents
Well for what it is worth. this is my daily driver as of now.
I went into odin and flashed back to stock.
Flashed the i9000 JM8 rom( the Phone CODE file from JM8 and the CSC from JM5)
Then flashed the stock captivate kernal and the .512 pit file
once that is done i flashed Unhelpfuls kernal over to OC
Then i flashed the Tatumia(sp) rom over it.
Ran the OCLF app from the market and changed my scheduler to deadline.
It is by far the best for real world performance and my quadrants are in the 2200-2300 range(like it matters).
Enjoy
P.s. i have flashed i am sure every other combination of roms and kernals and stuff. Voodoo kernal is freaking awesome but i cant get Clockwork to work with it and that is just not okay with me!
I just found the long thread about this topic here. Haven't read through it all yet. Won't bother unless I find I end up with a phone with that problem.

Nobody knows when it will be available since it is only getting Vibrant support to start. Cyanogen mod is probably the most popular ROM for Android, I don't know much about it though. They have a wiki page and a website for information.

cyanogenmod is a HUGELY supported ROM based on AOSP (android open source project) with various tweaks to improve usability. as for release, well the only rule about cyanogenmod is that you don't ask for release dates
officially, the Captivate isn't even supported, only the Vibrant is. But as shown, moving things over from Vibrant to Captivate isn't terribly difficult, but still takes time and we'll need someone to maintain it (cyanogen does not release/support devices it doesn't expect to work properly on). support for the vibrant is slated for 6.1 (which will probably be November, it's hard to say)
let me pop in and say there is no "Best Rom" just best for you. We all look for different things in the roms we use so it really is a trial and error. Just make sure to read, read and read some more to make sure you have everything set up right and dont end up with a big brick.
I am closing this.
good luck with your rom search
Hey guys im new to the Captivate. I use to be a heavy iphone user i had the iphone 3g then 3gs then 4 and well i decided its time to take the jump to android. All my iphone were jailbroken so obviously im interested in rooting. I rooted my Captivate the day i got it (Last saturday). I really want to get 2.2 Froyo. Now i keep reading about roms. I know how to load them but what are they, anything you can relate them to as iphone. Now on to my main question since im not to android friendly yet i want a stable 2.2 which one would you recommend to be the most stable. Ive seen Cognition and Axura but i dont know what they do nor do i know if theres better. Sorry to seem like a noob but i mainly got this phone for the learning curve of it so tell me everything haha.
Don't flash Axura first! If you do you'll be disappointed in every other rom you try, lol.
Cognition is a great first flash. It installs the lag fix for you and is very stable (get a non OC version). Axura is my favorite. It is very fast, has some IU tweaks, and they have great support. I still recommend Cognition as a first flash though as everything is done for you during the install. You can pretty much install it, change your wallpaper, sync your contacts and be done with it. (Make sure you sync you contacts with google before you flash)
One thing that I overlooked during my first flash is removing the sim card. Don't forget to do this.
Cognition was my first flash, and I haven't found reason to try something else. Its super fast and stable, and was really easy to flash.
I'm running the beta6 version. These phones are not known for long lasting batteries so I always avoid oc roms.

Cognition was great, but Perception is even better
Before Flashing I would read the post READ BEFORE FLASHING!!!!! under the dev forum - and make sure you understand how to restore before flashing.
And comparing Apple to Android really is trying to compare Apple to Oranges (pun intended).
NOTHING is the same between the two pretty much.
And.. I'd def go with Cognition as a first ROM - as it is a "basic" ROM that is currently using a Captivate kernel.
After you are really comfortable with tweaking your phone - you have your choice of ROMs. Just beware that the i9000 ROMS have their own unique issues - so flasher beware.
A rom, more or less is a package that updates your phones software. most roms are based off of foreign leaks.
When you flash a rom you are not just getting 2.2. In almost all cases you are getting a new kernel, most of which have s lag fix to further improve performance. Your modem will be changed as well, some moderns enable hsupa or basically faster upload and download speeds then what you have with stock.
Roms also have their own theme. Changes in the notification bar, menus, custom animations, boot animations. Etc
Do not flash anything till you read some, I would suggest starting with this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
This is a program that allows you to go back to stock, also allows you to recovery from a bad flash.
My vote on which to flash us axura or assonance. Axura may be the best option as it is a very user friendly thread and there are many people there who will help you if you need it.

Still think DG does great work but i have just about everything with the exception of Darkys (though i have seen a few new ones pop in in the last couple of days i haven't played with Insanity and the ginger clone)......

Titanium Backup, it is free in the app store.
You can backup your apps+data, but it is not recommend to backup system settings. It only takes a few minutes to set the system settings, not worth any possible problems later on if you choose to restore them IMO.

I'm looking for a gingerbread install for a bell I9000-m basically just need to make sure that the swype keyboard is fairly decent or similar to the bell one and whichever replacement is found here.
Im guessing I'll need a link to a stock modem driver but I've never done this before with much success besides just kindof bumbeling through a bit.
Let me know anything that could help in my quest here.
I would like to find some links to a good set of files for this update. I've read at many places that for bell you must ask for specific files for this task as it must be more complicated for the bell setup for some reason.
Even a Nexus S firmware if port-able to this device would be fine.

Any firmware for the i9000 works on the i9000m. There are plenty of threads in the development section with gb roms. Just download the KC1 modem for either Odin or CWM and flash that - I won't get into details, there are a bazillion threads discussing how to do this properly on the i9000m

Then use Cyanogenmod. Again, all of these are in the development subforum.
You mention Cyanogenmod but wouldnt that be froyo?
I didnt really mean just link me to the specific forum subgroup I was hoping for some more specific direction I realize my question wasn't that clear i suppose. Anyways I've basically just had trouble changing the firmware on this device before and I really dont want to end up bricking it with a bad firmware flash.
Basically a good starting point example link would be fantastic I will do some more research and if i manage to do this myself I will post my findings just to close the thread.
Flash JVH and then flash KC1 modem, done.
I also dont want to install a beta gingerbread release if at all avoidable and mostly a vanilla or highly reccomended third party custom would be fine too.
JVH is official release in parts of Europe. I'm with Bell, running JVH with KC1 modem since its release and absolutely no issues.

There isn't really anything specific for the i9000m. Really, its just a matter of picking a rom and following the flashing instructions. If you're flashing a stock release (like JVH lets say), use Odin, flash the tarball with update bootloader checked and once thats done, flash an appropriate modem for Bell (for 850mhz), like KC1 that I find works very well.
If you're flashing a cooked rom, like those in the development subforum, then you'd flash something like JVH, flash an appropriate kernel with clockworkmod (I prefer speedmod, but there are others), then you'd install the cooked rom through cwm recovery.

As others have said, JVH is an official release for a lot of European carriers. It will work fine on the i9000m. I was running JVH + KC1 Modem for a while before switching to the latest Cyanogenmod nightly (which works absolutely fantastic now).
If you're looking for an official Bell Gingerbread release.... you'll just have to keep waiting. Bell is slower than the second coming. Just keep a full KC1 or JL2 (with bootloaders) around so you can flash back to stock if you need be.
Also, you said you had trouble flashing before. I'd suggest following that link in my post above, and if you get stuck, come back and we can step you through.
And finally, you really can't brick you phone as long as you are able to access download mode and 3 button recovery. Absolutely make sure you can access these two modes before flashing anything.
I have actually had issues getting into recovery mode sometimes but not usually, but have no problem entering download mode. I think at one point I wound up with upload mode... which doesent seem to be documented... But dont quote me on that one as it was a while ago (after searching high and low on my NAS I cant find the photo i took sorry). I have actually had to send this phone off to bell to get them to fix it twice now.
Once due to my inability to do this properly without making a forum post asking these question and another due to a bad Kies update sending my phone into a boot loop.
So you say Cyanogen nightly works well im thinking I might give that a shot as im sure there are good reasons why you would want to use cyanogen over another release. Im just hoping for no weird Telco specific crap on my phone unless its Bell specific if i must have even that.
Would I go into the ROM list thread for the cyanogenmod nightly? http://goo.gl/IBbEm
Which leads me to this? http://goo.gl/b5UwG
or is there a better way to obtain CM7? Also what would be a good location to try and find my modem driver (KC1)?
I'm sorry to spam questions here but one final one. Would there be a good boot loader that I should strive for, if any?

I am running the above now. I was on Darky 9.5, then upgraded yesterday to Ficeto JVB, Dark Core 2.2 and Darky's v10 RC6. Then flashed Dark Core 2.3.
I then flashed KC1 modem this morning.
Running great and loving the rom so far.. its a base rom, so not a lot of features in it but at least i can customize it to how i like it so far.
I've downloaded this file I9000UGKC1 ## 512.PIT 2.2 2011 March from samfirmwares I'm hoping it works out well for giving me the modem driver.
And
Gingerbread 2.3.3: XWJVH from http://goo.gl/AEYzr to get a gingerbread release with a boot loader.
I will now look for a copy of odin hopefully it doesn't matter which version I get but I've noticed there is allot of fuzz when it comes to odin versions or even where to obtain it even. I want to obtain it from a legitimate source but it seems as though there is no specific location as to where to get it.
At some point I would like to try Cyanogen as everyone holds it in rather high regard though I'm not really sure what the benefits would be.
Some roms on here come with odin. You can also get it from samfirmware. The development thread is where you will find all information for each release. There's a few sources for cwm flashable modems. Odin isn't bad at all, it can be a little finicky with win 7 64 bit for some people but I have had no problems with it at all. Good luck and hope you find a rom that suits you.

seems to work fine with working modem from http://goo.gl/02b7S
BUT
there is no OpenVpn OR SIP and those are the two things that I really wanted out of gingerbread.
I personally found JL2 better than KC1. I get up to 5mb/s down and 3mb/s up.
About cyanogen, you gotta try it to see . I didn't believe the difference would be noticeable either...
If you want modems for cm7, click the JL2 modem link in my sig, there's a post full of them.
For modems for other roms, look over there : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391
And just like everyone else said, you can flash i9000 roms on i9000m without any problems - in fact even flashing a different modem isn't necessary, depending on your provider, it's just better.
those are features commonly found within the custom roms for jvh
Thanks for this thread. Provided the modem for me to get this working properly.
If I were you I would stick with a Daryky rom. his 10 finaly is a little slow and glitchy at times so I recommend 10 RC6. it's a stock jvh rom with his tweeks. Cyanogen is basically vanilla rom. it's so fast (the best i've flashed so far) but it's missing swype, like you stated you wanted that. I tried getting the beta swype but it didn't work. anyways i'm actually liking the gingerbread keyboard haha. so ya, if you need swype stick with darky rom, if your looking to try an amazing rom try cyanogen.
The swype beta installed without any problems for me on cm7...
The only thing is I speak french, so either I get the english keyboard, or I get the "France" french one... which is AZERTY... u_U

I used Darky's rom for a looong time before switching to something else. I really didn't like the theme (at the time), and I found roms that seemed to perform better. I also ran a deodexed JL2 that I cooked myself for a while.
You can get swipe APKs from just about any custom rom out there, just pull the apk out of the .zip and install it. Or, I just signed up for swipe beta and installed it - works great.
Anyway, I guess the bottom line is that there are so many options available, and so many fantastic cooked roms available in the development thread, that trying them and finding one you really like is the only way to go.
So, I have a SGS I9000t and am currently very frustrated with the official firmware 2.2.1, since some apps are having terrible issues. Whats worse is that lots of my programs are having constant crashes. My available ram is always getting capped, and i have to uninstall some programs that add functionality that while unnecessary they're nice to have.
Now I have been thinking, what to do? I hear I could flash my device. Doing so would improve its performance, even update to gingerbread. So now i have some questions. I bought this phone and recklessly installed darky's rom. It worked, but without 3g. Other than that, it was pretty amazing. I kept screwing around with it trying to fix 3g and finally bricked it. Took it in for warranty and got a new one.
I dont want to repeat the same mistakes, so this time i want to be extra careful.
Is there a way to do a complete backup? Like every single piece of data in ALL of my phone's memory backup. In case this flash goes wrong, I can just make it work just as it was before?
Is there a way to try roms before flashing? Like just load a rom on top of another rom without altering the current rom.
I would like to evade roms with 2.2.1 firmware, because of the problems mentioned before, so whats the best, non 2.2.1 rom available? Most stable, just plain best.
Since y phone is a i9000t my modem seems to have some problems when flashing, so here are the details of my phone: Model GT-I9000T // FW Ver 2.2.1 // Kernel 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1 // Build FROYO.UBJP9
Im sorry if this is a lot of info, i just want to do this right. If I flash my phone its for better funcionality, not to get worse. Thanks for your time, if youve read this far. Hopefully you can help me out.
You are asking to be spoon fed information that is out there already!
1st rule of forum is look before you ask, people will help you if you make the effort, but you have to make the effort first. Sorry if this is harsh, so as a pointer, read the main q&a first as a starter

Ahh yes. Ive read a lot actually. Not the basic stuff though. I may have to sit down and read up.
One quick question though, Im sure its not in the FAQ.
I have been dealing with my phone and I see now that many of the problems im having are created by the apps themselves. Will changing my rom actually help greatly? Is 2.3.3 recomemded?
Sent from my GT-I9000T using XDA App
samsung use rfs file system that decays over time, hence people tend to lagfix to cure this, ie. Convert to ext4, this is done through a kernel tweak, you need to start reading and learning, im sorry but I wont do your homework for you!

Your problems are not due to 2.2.1 Its the best non GB rom .
Your first step is factory reset .
Second check Kies for an update .
Third step would be to remove these problem apps .
But i just spotted the problem at some stage you installed a darkys rom
Known killer of phones ..
Total removal is flash stock froyo 2.2 rom with pit and repartition checked .
jje
I flashed darkys rom but traded that phone for a new one. So I have a fresh factory 2.2.1 and its working very well. My biggest problem is the bug with programs resetting/not saving settings because the old data stays after uninstalling. Also the rom runs great, what im looking for is better compatibility on perhaps another rom. But you say its as good as it gets so I may be staying with this rom.
Edit; Also, I must add that Kies cannot update my device, because my service provider has my device locked on that firmware. Now what you suggest is flashing to 2.2, then updating to a stock gingerbread rom through Kies? Should'nt I just flash GB and get it over with?

Yeah, ODIN is your friend.
Well, now that I have a couple of people here, I will ask, which if these two roms would be better to install?
Gingerbread 2.3.3 stock Samsung or
Juwe's Smart Edition http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964672
I like how juwes sounds, but it says something that bothers me, and that is, that it has no bugs, and that is an extremely ignorant claim, since the gingerbread release will always have bugs, no piece of software is perfect, ever. That said, it could be much better than samsungs, so help me out on this one. Thanks.

If you go around looking for a problem, you are most likely to find one. This applies to more than just phone firmwares. Like you said, no system is truly perfect... With that said, I would recommend you try a custom ROM over any stock one... And Juwe's ROM is a pretty trusted one on this board... so sure, go ahead and try it!
I ended up flashing a new kernel. Speed mod or something. It worked amaizingly well. Sadly I had already bought voodoo plus, and i wont be needing that anymore. Im really pleased with my phone now. Thanks to everyone for your advice.

If you are not curious about what are in new roms and if you do not have any problems with the stock rom. Do not flash.....
I will flash haha. But I backed up all of my data before. In case anything goes wrong. Thanks for the advice though

I'd say that the voodoo plus app still will be quite useful as it works its magic regardless of kernel. You might find yourself on a standard kernel one day, and then you will still be able to enjoy the improvements of voodoo.

This is a known problem, i had it happen to me several times on froyo firmwares. Solution is to go into settings, applications, then clear data and cache of the problem program, then uninstall it, and go into /data and /dbdata/ and find any data the program has left behind and delete it. Reinstall the app from the market, and the problem should be gone. Havent had it crop up in gingerbread yet.

I'm running the stock Gingerbread I got from Odin one click on my captivate. I really want to enable HSUPA, but I don't have the skills you guys have, and it seems you have to make a lot of changes to the phone and use an i9000 Rom. Is there an Odin one click out there that will just flash everything, or is there a step by step guide somewhere? As I said, sorry if I sound dumb, but I'm not used to doing all the steps that seem to be needed.
Yes you need an. I9000 modem /kernel combination to enable hspa its only a couple of steps to install read the I9000 rom ops they should all have instructions on how to flash them...which usually consists of a full version of odin flash to stock gingerbread, an odin flash of a re oriented kernel with cwm baked in it, and then finally the rom flash in cwm...
But at this point, just flash a kernel with odin that has cwm and then flash an I9000 rom in recovery since you already have gingerbread bootloaders...
Cool. Can I get the right thread link?
Go to the mosaic thread, post 2 has all the instructions and files you need.
Mosaic VI, Post #2
Oh yeah, there we go... Thanks studacris for the tip earlier in Q & A

The instructions are fairly clear, but if you have something you're stuck on go to the Mosaic thread in the Q&A section. Make sure you understand what you need to do before you try to flash. A lot of folks get into trouble by trying it before they understand.
But as Studacris said, the tread post has all you'll need
Enjoy!
Did it! I'm free of ATT! The stock ginger is fine for me! The speed is much better! Only 3 things.
1. Is there a fix for the home button?
2. No more USB mass storage mode?
3. How to root.
I'm not going to mess with any custom roms yet. I'm very, very happy.
Found the home button fix! Clockwork mod is great! As are these forums!
settings, wireless and networks, usb mode, usb mass storage
flash the attached to root, assuming you have flashed a reoreinted kernel with cwm baked in
Hi,
I followed the instructions for the HSUPA, and nothing seems to be broken, but my question is.... is there anything i can see in the settings of the phone that show the dl of the I9000 kernel took?
Thanks,
I love all the work everyone does!
Installed the Reoriantated I9000. Rooted. Then, installed the kc1 modem, or, as I am now fondly calling it, the modem on crack. . HOLY ****! Getting like 2MB down and 1.5MB up. Before, about 512k down and like 30k up! ATT is an absolute disgrace for what they did to this wonderful phone. It doesn't even seem like the same phone anymore. More responsive in every way, no bloatware, and almost 4G like internet! Seriously, non-Iphone users should band together for a class action lawsuit. We shouldn't have to go through this Hell to make hardware work the way it was meant to.
Too tired to mess with other roms, but sure as hell used clockwork to back this one up! Thanks for all the help and patience again.
Oh, one last thing. I have the Odin one click for ATT stock. If I ever need warranty, will that one flash bring everything back to the ATT garbage?
Yes it will
I get 5 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up
