[PROBLEM] Contacts Not Syncing Properly with Facebook

After doing quite a bit of searching, both on XDA and on Google, I have yet to come across a thread that adequately addresses and resolves the following issue:
Since upgrading to Android 2.1 for my HTC Hero from Sprint, My Facebook contacts have not synced properly with the people app. They do not show up under my contacts, and pictures/status do no sync. Even if I try to manually link the contact to Facebook, my friends list does not load up and instead just says, "No matches found."
I have tried removing my Facebook account and re-adding it to no avail. I have also checked my sync options under settings. One forum (for the HTC Desire) suggested opening the people app, and going to the online directories tab at the bottom (a little globe icon which it appears the Hero version of the people app does not have) where you can select Facebook manually and have it sync.
Hopefully some of the excellent devs here on XDA can help me get to the root of this problem.
So, any suggestions?
good luck on that answer, only found alyouis or what not is the only one i found to work and sync

I have developed a brute force method that has worked in all but one case.
Called the "Regaw Brute Force" method lol
1. Remove your current FB account.
2. Go to Settings > Accounts & sync > Add account.
3. Click on Facebook For HTC Sense.
4. Sign in
5. It will show the sync icon for a small amount of time.
6. Go to the homescreen and click on people
7. Slide over to updates and events (you will see none yet)
8. Do the "Regaw Brute" method: Click menu > refresh 5 times quickly (so menu > refresh, menu > refresh..... 5 times)
9. Let your Hero sit for up to 15 minutes on this screen, letting the screen turn off.
10. If after about 15-20 minutes, all of your pictures aren't synced, repeat steps 8 and 9 again.
11. Repeat step 10 if necessary
same issue, the one thing I find interesting. If I use a different facebook account it signs in and starts to download everything instantly. No com.htc.bg and bgp errors.
mine is weird, it will update some contacts but not all.. it usually gets up to the C's or M's then won't do any more

hey thanks, this seemed to work for me
i deleted my old facebook for htc sense account, restarted my phone, did the refresh thing (except i did it about ten times in a row), left it alone for about 20 minutes and everything was synced.
thanks again!
When I do the "Regaw Brute Method" I get a force close on com.htc.bgp. So apparently that service has something to do with it.
Think there's any way we can take the people app from the HTC Desire or different working Hero ROM and port it over?
EDIT: Also I noticed that at least my own profile picture is now synced. I'll try the brute method again.
Mod edit: not dev related, moved to q&a
Okay, I've done this with 4 diff roms and i'm batting 100%....
If you're using autokiller (or moded internal taskkiller) set it back to "normal".
reboot (just for good measure)
run logcat and sync.
look for "com.htc.bg(p) died". If you see it, you're screwed.
Every time i've had sync issues since going to 2.1, this has been the cause.
Hope this helped.

Regaw's method def works for syncing contacts. The only problem that I still have that I hope someone will figure out is my Facebook calendar syncing with the HTC calendar where even though in the calendar settings it shows the Facebook calendar checked off, none of my events show up in the Calendar app...

I get this error ever time I try to sync my facebook account. But only mine.
p.s. I just install the newly released stock sprint 2.1 update....still a no go, still get the com.htc.bg errors.
I found other HTC phones having the same issues. This is the HTC Desire fix.....to bad we don't have a globe/interenet icon in our people app.
Go to the PEOPLE(contact list) app. Go to the Online Directories (globe) tab. Hit Facebook. You will be asked to log in to your Facebook account. Once logged in, it will show all of you contacts on your Facebook account. Go back to the full list of your contacts on the phone and try and sync.

Yeah, I put that supposed fix in my first post, which is why I was wondering if any devs could help port their version of the people app to the Hero.

I am having a similar issue, but Regaw's fix does not work. I can get to step 3, but when I click on "Facebook" to add a new account, the phone cycles back to the "Account & Sync Settings" screen and I don't get any prompts to login to my facebook account. Oddly, I don't even remember getting the prompts to set up my facebook account when I first flashed this ROM. Here is my info:
-------------------------
Firmware Version: 2.1-update 1
Baseband Version: 2.42.01.04.27
Kernel Version: 2.6.29-GoDmOdE-Darchshizz-OC [email protected] #1
Mod Version: Darchstar-2.6.4
Build Number: EPE54B
-------------------------
Any ideas?
Edit: Here are some common things that I found throughout logcat that may or may not be helpful in resolving the issue; just thought I'd post them for whoever might be able to help me out
D/AccountSettings( 147): added authority com.android.contacts to accountType com.facebook.auth.login
V/AddAccount( 147): Attempting to add account of type com.facebook.auth.login
I/ActivityManager( 147): Starting activity: Intent { cmp=com.facebook.katana/.LoginActivity (has extras) }
Logcat repeats those three things consistently throughout the file.
there is something real buggy with the syncing and the size of the contacts.. see my other thread, my contacts got up to 30mb
i would love to just go back to the 1.5 people app, especially because you could pull fb info from the server without storing it locally...
does anyone have the proper stock apks from 1.5?
I keep getting Connection error
Hello I have attempted to do the following. I am on the internet, everything is fine except when I go to refresh I get a connection error. Any ideas? Thanks
I keep getting Connection error AGAIN
I have the HTC EVO

[Q] Still no facebook?

So I have done many searches and still nothing. Is there actually a fix that will make FB work corectly. I use the energy Rom. Maybe I am missing something? If so point me in the right direction please.
Or?
Or is there a Rom that has a working facebook.
Microsoft has updated the facebook app in the marketplace if thats what you are talking about. It works better now. The previous app has been broken for a few months now.
Ok I asked my self the same thing a few weeks ago as I had just switched over from myspace to facebook. The tab on the energy rom requires you to do the following....
- Go to Facebook Tab
-Press under menu or options (don't know of the top of my head)
-Go to validate app (in other words u need to give it permission to the app to be able to update ur stuff via facebook)
-select copy from browser
-let the tab options open opera
-after u log into ur account u will see a page that says "success"
-now copy the whole link and return to the validation part of the tab
-paste the link and let the tab do it's thing (may take anywhere from 1 sec. to 5 mins)
-After that your done!
Now u can sync ur contacts, see updates and even post updates.
But keep in mind that even like all the facebook apps and other ways to get to use facebook, none of them are as up-to-the moment as actually being online on ur computer on facebook.
Hope that helped!

Google+ "Invite Available" Notification Script

Purpose
With all the rage around getting a Google+ invite, there is a small problem: Even with an invite, you might not be able to get into Google+ for several days. nibras_reeza and I have been working on a script that, once you've received an invite, will keep checking the signup page to see if you can sign up. YOU MUST HAVE AN INVITE FOR THIS SCRIPT TO BE USEFUL!
Features
* Automatically checks Google for when registration is open
* Displays a running total of refreshes
* Works in Chrome, Firefox, and IE (w/ Trixie)
Special Thanks
Nibras Reeza - motivated and helped me write this; running the notification form and general debugging
"_mousey" - fixed a caching issue, IE support, and debugging
"thrasher9" - "how many times have I pinged Google?"
Version
0.000005 - Fixing stupid merge issues (thanks Nibras and _mousey!) and merged _mousey's IE support (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15456658&postcount=201)
0.000004 - Merged changes from Nibras, _mousey, and thrasher9 into the main script
0.000001 - Initial
Instructions
READ THIS!
1. Install this script. For Chrome, simply download the file, drag it to Chrome, and authorize the install
2. Go to your Google+ invite, click on the "Join Google+" link
3. The script should take over--your browser will jump to the "Field Test" page. You can monitor this progress by pressing Ctrl-Shift-J to view the javascript console.
4. When registration "opens", the script will stop refreshing. You should see a form on the page asking for some info to sign up. DO THIS AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE!
5. Come back here and post about your success!
Note 1: Just because you see the sign-up form doesn't mean you'll get in. Therefore, it is pointless to leave this running overnight; even though you may see a sign-up form in the morning, chances are it won't work.
Note 2: If Google is not displaying in English, then you'll need to edit line 45. More info here (Thanks _mousey!) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15430390&postcount=161.
Note 3: If you want to run this in IE, use Trixie (Thanks _mousey!) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15425549&postcount=152
Implementation
(the boring stuff)
Original post: Link
Attached is a Greasemonkey script for Google Chrome (probably doesn't work for Firefox...). Install it in your browser, click the "view or comment" link in the invite you received. The script will find the "Join Google+" link, save the URL, then navigate to the page. If the page contains a DIV with "Field Trial", it will wait 5 seconds, then refresh. This should happen until either a) Invites work again, b) Google opens G+ to the world, or c) Google gets pissed at you and blocks your address.

I successfully used this script to sign up for Google+, and so have many other people.
Not necessary anymore. Use the version by Adam above. He integrated mine into his.
TIP for Android users:
(Some said this works but I can't make any guarantee. Worth a try.)
Apply for an invite in my form using a GMail account. Once you receive my invite, download Google+ from the Market(use Market Enabler or Root Toolbox and emulate a US carrier if you are outside US. You need ROOT.)
Now, sign into your GMail account on your phone. (Settings->Accounts and Sync->New Account->Google) Skip this if you submitted the account you already use on phone.
Open up Google+ on Android and sign in.
ONLY ONE PERSON HAS TO RUN THE SCRIPT. ANYONE CAN CHECK STATUS PUBLICLY.
SCRIPT UPDATED. USE THE NEW VERSION.
Here's a fork I made. This version logs available times publicly on a Google Docs Spreadsheet. I want someone who has a spare unused invite and has not registered to run it continuously.
And, I owe a lot for Adam to working so hard to write the script. He did all the hard work of digging into the code. xD I just made a fork. lol
Here's the public URL(TIME IS IN +0530GMT/+1030EST):
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...pUTOhdHdwLUZOTmlOWHNvbzR0M19iSTNzdmc&hl=en_GB
Just subscribe by notifications for changes made to the doc and you will be notified by email when registrations are open.

Exactly.
Think of it as a club: You're standing in line (G+ invite) waiting to get in. The bouncer finally decides to let a few people in (registration is open). You get lucky and he lets you in (success).
Damn! Wish I had my invite right now!
Are you still sending invites to the ones that registered to your spreadsheet?
Great work anyway!
Just another quick question which time zone is used for the times?

I did send an bulk invite a few minutes back. It's taking hours to go through.
The time on what? My spreadsheet which says when registrations are open? It's SLST(+0530GMT). I'll try to change it to EST.
Hello Nibras,
I installed the script and removed all cache and then clicked on the 'view or comment on Nibras's post'. It automatically navigated to the registration page but then never refreshed! or is it refreshing and I can't tell?
What do you mean by 'DIV with "Field Trial"'? How can I tell if the page contains it? sorry if this was a dumb question, but I don't understand it.
It's adam's script. Not mine. Don't bother about the div stuff. It just explains how the script works.
Just install the script on Chrome or Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey.
Click view or comment on nibras's post. Then the script will reload the signup page till Google allows signups. (Make sure you are signed into your Google account before you try all these.)
idk how to use this script? all it does is it blocks me from visiting the google plus website because it is killing my chrome with a lot of spamming a page which says: "available!" which will open many times until my chrome crashes
EDIT: damn my fault, i need to get the invite mail first! im sorry !

Open the Chrome JavaScript console, you should see a message every time it refreshes.

As long as it keeps refreshing your page, it is working. I would suggest moving the window off to the side and keep an eye on it. The right hand side of the page that tells you there is no room will switch to a log-in form whenever Google feels like it. The script itself doesn't make Google give you the invite any faster, it just makes you aware that you can sign-up within 5 seconds of it being available.
Mucho thanks, hopes I gets lucky now.

This is the console open for around 5 minutes with no msgs. I know its not refreshing, but I don't know why. I downloaded you zip file and extracted the JS file, then opened a blank chrome page and dragged the file into the blank page, it asked me if i want to install it and i clicked continue. When I go to extensions I can see G+ invited there. When I open the 'comment or view' link, it takes me to the post with the red button saying 'Join G+' and then automatically redirects me to the page attached, but it doesnt refresh.
Am I doing something wrong?
EDIT: it worked now after pressing Ctrl+F5 several time. I think it was a problem of cache, although I have deleted all cache and cookies.
Anyway thank you Adam and Nibras. Will let it run overnight and see what happens

I'll let it run over night then and maybe there'll be a present for me in the morning!
Thanks again for the script, I figured someone would sort something automated in the end and am happy to have found it.
I have another concern, could it be that chances for US residents are better than non US? do you advise me to use a proxy, or it doesn't matter?
I don't have any facts to back this up, more of just some thoughts into how I might implement the invitation system:
Let's say you start the script before going to bed around midnight. The script runs for 2 hours, Google allows some people into the system, your browser stops refreshing because you have a sign-up form. Success, right? I don't think so. My guess is that Google is allowing a set number of people to sign up at defined intervals. Just because you see the form doesn't mean that you will be able to create an account, otherwise, we could just sniff the form post and duplicate it for every member that wants an account[1]. So, you wake up in the morning, seeing a sign-up form, frantically fill it out, only to discover that you were ~8 hours too slow and too many other people beat you to it.
My recommendation is that you only run the script when you are within arms-reach of your computer, as I'm not sure how much time you have between seeing the form and having it rejected.
Thinking more about what Nibras and I have discussed, since this is a beta, Google would want to control the amount of people in the system. Also, they would need to have many servers to handle all the traffic. It would be dumb to put all those servers in one location (US or UK), as the latency would kill the experience for anyone outside of that country. So, if Google has a bunch of servers spread across the globe, then they would probably want to try to encourage people around the world to sign up, instead of just having 99% of their testers from one country. This might explain why we are seeing invites being sent at odd times, and why people are being allowed to sign up at odd times.
Alternatively, they may be releasing ~1000 invites at a time, first come, first serve. And there's some dude staring at a bank of monitors, watching all the threads across the net (just like this one), giggling as we try to figure out what they're doing. And this dude, whenever he gets bored, he presses a button and lets a few more people into the system.
[1] If anyone is nerdy enough to sniff the traffic, I would be curious what it is submitting, just in case I'm wrong. In theory, we could create accounts for everyone, at least until Google patches the issue.
EDIT: Odds for US or non-US people? I don't really think it matters.

First week with Windows

Hello
And happy new year to everyone!
This is my first week on Lumia 735 after being 6 years with Android.
I like very much it's desktop, but there are some simple things that I thought until now I would figure out but I cannot find a solution....
1. How can I download a PDF from an email and then attach it to another email?
2. Is there a way to have a shortcut on notification bar for data connection?
3. Is there a way to remove Bing and get Google as default engine?
4. Is there a way to tide up settings? I feel that are randomly scattered...
5. Is there a way to open a new tab in internet explorer, but open in background? Cause we are always transferred to the new tab.
Thanks!
I'm on the same phone since about 4-5 days, so I have not yet answers for you, but another question to add:
- why on some apps the keyboard doesn't turn in landscape mode when I flip the phone? I found it working on some apps only, but in Bing search (just an example) it remains in portrait
EDIT: a bit of googling partially answers to 3: I'm a newbie so I don't know if I can link external sites here, but it seems you can change the default search engine in Internet Explorer in the browser settings (so when you type words in the address bar, it uses Google instead of Bing). Regarding the phone search button, maybe the trick is not so easy...
1. did you see download in email message? click on that link to download file to your phone.
2. with latest WP OS 8.10.14219.341 you can add mobile data shortcut in action center
or use Quick Launch app from store
3. settings - applications - internet explorer, select advanced settings and change to google
4. no... latest updated is always at end of list...
5. not exactly... try UC Browser 8.1, maybe you like it better than IE
Download a app named File attacher,it can help you to attach any files into outlook client.
Sent from my AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 using Tapatalk for Windows Phone
1) Download the file to your phone. You can then open it from the email (which will let you choose what PDF viewer to open it with, if you have more than one installed; some of them directly support sharing) or you can then switch to a file manager app (Files, Pocket File Manager, Aerize Explorer, etc.), go to the Downloads directory, and share the file from there. When "sharing" the file, one option will be to use email; this will attach the file to the email. This approach also works for other file types, by the way.
2) As dxdy says, you need to be on a new OS version (you may need to be using the "Preview for Developers" app) to get the ability to add mobile data specifically to the Action Center (swipe-from-top notification area thing) but there are lots of other ways (tons of free apps, for example) to pin a link to it on your Start screen. You can also have both WiFi and Airplane Mode toggles on the Action Center, even in less-than-newest versions.
3) Not unless you're in Russia, I think? You may be able to change the IE default search engine using the method dxdy posted above, but if you want to change the search button behavior, that's trickier. I think in Russia (or possibly just tell your phone you are), if you have the Google app installed, it may run that... haven't tried, though.
4) Settings are, unfortunately, not directly orderable. The default order for Microsoft-provided settings is basically "what MS has found people use most often", thus things like visual and audio customization are at the top, WiFi is on the first page, and stuff like Backup requires scrolling down a bunch. There's also OEM customizations, which are technically just Store apps that are pre-installed and use the Settings hub instead of the normal app list; those are always listed underneath all the Microsoft settings, and (as dxdy says), the one that was most recently installed/updated is at the top of that section ('top of the bottom of the list' if you will).
5) Doesn't seem to be any such way in IE, but there's lots of other browsers. Most of them just wrap the IE rendering engine, so pages will look the same as on IE but the UI can be totally different. This includes changes to tab management. They won't sync with your other devices, at least not by default, though. There's also a beta of Opera for WP8; it still has some bugs but mostly works and has a very different UI from IE. Annoyingly, though, Microsoft doesn't allow any of those apps to be set as the default browser (you can't change the URI association for http:/https: for example).
@axxel84: It depends on whether the app supports landscape mode. That requires work from the developer, since they have to change the layout of everything, so a lot of apps don't support it. If the app doesn't support it, then it will be locked in one orientation no matter how you turn it, keyboard included. Some apps (mostly games) are also locked in landscape mode only, and don't support portrait.
Hi guys, thanks for the help but I am still finding difficult to compose with windows after coming from fully updated Android phones.
- pdf attachments, not possible. You can see that you download files but no where to be seen in order to attach them in another email! What????
- the option to change Bing to Google was in the past, but they don't have it on new phones. And this is the company that wants to increase market share? With these kind of acts I don't think they will last many years...
- I found a way to have a shortcut on desktop that takes me to settings and there to click on for data. But why don't they include this in notification option? How difficult is this?????
- the other frustrating thing I am feeling, is that most other times when resuming an app when I go out and then in, it starts the"resuming" screen and takes 5 seconds to load... For example viber, I can't chat instantly with someone, I have to leave the program on continuously to do this
- no led notification. I should have known earlier by reading reviews, but there is no led notification!!
- no major apps as official pinterest, dropbox, instagram, sms backup to gmail. My biggest disappointment is Dropbox... I am thinking of selling the phone now and going back to Android. Having two small twins, I take continuously videos and photos, and I don't want to think about backup. I found another application but doesn't sync videos automatically. And also the backup app of windows doesn't do automatically the job... If I was windows I would hire people to help these companies develop the "big" apps...
- notification center doesn't always work. for example when a new app is downloaded, nothing comes app on notification. Or in viber you might get 10 messages on notification, if you click one and then in viber you read all, they remain on notification
Nobody seems to have emailed me a PDF recently, but I can download them from the web and they show up in my Downloads folder (on my SD card, since that's where I told Storage Sense to put new downloads). From there, I can see it in Aerize Explorer, select it, Share it, and choose an email account; a new message is created with the file attached.
Some new phones have the option for Google search, but it's not in all regions.
As you have ALREADY been told, the option to toggle data service from the Action Center is available in the latest version. It's also largely un-needed; Data Sense and related settings should give you enough control over your data usage to make it fairly unimportant. Mind you, I agree that it should have been there from the start, but asking rhetorical questions isn't actually helpful.
The "Resuming..." screen can come up for two reasons (or a combo thereof):
1) Badly-coded app that does a bunch of stuff immediately on resume, before it lets you use the app.
2) Your phone ran low on RAM and removed the app from background execution ("tombstoned" it, sort of like hibernating a laptop), so it needs to be restored from the Flash storage and then resumed.
Lots of phones don't have notification LEDs. That's not a WP8 thing, that's a "if this feature is important to you then you ought to buy a phone with that feature" thing. My HTC has a notification LED, my Samsung did not. Both are/were WP8 devices.
Automatic backup of photos and videos is included in the OS, has been included since WP7 actually, but it goes to OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive) instead of Dropbox. Microsoft software uses Microsoft services; this isn't really surprising.
SMS is automatically backed up as well, just not to Google. Why would Microsoft include a feature to back up your messages to a competitor's service?
Lack of official apps is somewhat annoying/disappointing, but you could have easily enough checked that before buying, and the apps will come in time. In the meanwhile, there's usually third-party versions of those apps.
App downloads are fast, and you know when you started them. Why would you need a notification for that? As for the thing with Viber, it's not the OS' fault that the app doesn't report when a message is read. Notifications are really easy to clear though, just swipe them to the right and all notifications for that app will clear (or hit the "clear all" button to get rid of all of them at once).

how to create task that will monitor system wide app installation...

so basically i want to monitor system wide app installation and uninstallation, including sideloading with dates? if possible to have it create a log and store it in a specific folder that is locked or can't be accessed or deleted without code. and to do a daily or weekly check to see if any changes were made.
also is there a task to block all installations including sideloading?
any help would be appreciated.
@ktmom
So tracking installed and uninstalled apps is straightforward.
I'm not aware of a way to lock the resulting file per se. Encrypt it, probably. But to prevent any other app from accessing it, I don't know how to do that. It could be uploaded to the cloud, e.g. Google drive. Then the local copy deleted. That's kinda fussy. Saving it as a variable array is doable, then Tasker can be locked.
If on every install / uninstall, the log is updated, why does there need to be a daily/weekly check?
I would have to test and see if the package manager can be "locked".
Is the device in question rooted?
This kinda sounds like something I might do to my kids phone [emoji6]. If this is actually the case, the file could be sent to your device or email on update. It wouldn't matter if the local copy was edited. You also could know immediately if an app had changed.
I asked in the other thread, do you have any familiarity with tasker?
@ktmom
device is non rooted,
file sent to email would be fine if that will get rid of daily/weekly checks. (<--- this was just something I wanted that maybe i'll just use in notepad++ to highlight the differences for a quick way of seeing changes.)
i have dabbled in tasker many years ago, only to enable/disable wifi and turn on vpn in geo fenced locations.
I haven't forgotten you. I should post a solution by the weekend. I'm just spending some time to make sure the kinks are out. You will need the MailTask plugin. I personally use a script in termux (requires cURL) to send via Google servers, but that is harder to setup, particularly with OATH. The plugin makes life much easier.

ok great, thank you!

Finally, I think I have this stable and able to handle multiple consecutive app installations and removals. I am working under the assumption that the use for this project is to monitor possible dangerous activity on a child’s device. I do not condone the use of this for monitoring a device without adult consent.
This project will send an email notification when a new app is installed or an existing app is removed. The email will include a CSV file with the remaining still installed apps. It should ignore apps that are being updated (they remove then install). The emails are sent silently and there should not be any indication to the user this is happening in the background. The CSV file is saved in the {storage}/Tasker/tasks/ directory. Each time an email is sent, the stored file is also updated. One instance of the previous file is saved as well.
First, you need MailTask installed. Please ensure that the MailTask plugin is fully configured and tested before installing this project. We are using OAuth Gmail authentication, so ignore SMTP stuffs.
Also, IMHO, I would use a GMail account maybe even created for this purpose, but at least one not setup to routinely access by the device user. This way, the user’s account will not reflect the sent messages.
To configure and test MailTask
Open MailTask from the app drawer on your device
Perform “Authorize Gmail Access” Use the account for the “from” you want to use in this project
Perform “Grant access to primary storage”
If your device has an SDcard, perform “Grant access to Sd card”
Now if you want, you can create a task in your Tasker installation to test the MailTask plugin
Create a test task
Add a MailTask action (Plugin -> MailTask -. send email)
Configuration:
From = Account used to Authorize Gmail Access above
To = Account where to send email
Subject = Testing MailTask
Body = Some text to take up space
Attachments = choose a basic file using the paperclip icon just for there to be an attachment
Test plugin by manually running the task.
If all is good, you can delete this test
Now install the project (taskernet link). On install, accept enabling the profiles. If you do, then the Installation task should run automatically. If you prefer not to, or if you need to re-run the installation, manually run the “Initial Setup” task.
