**Nexus S- Carbon Vinyl** - Nexus S Accessories

For those complaining about the cheap plastic back cover of their Nexus S.
Here`s a solution.
I`ve recently got a piece of carbon vinyl from a car store around. You can easily get one of these on ebay for about 1-2 bucks. Get yourself a hairdryer(for the edges obviously)
Remove the back cover and apply the vinyl on it, remove air bubbles and with the use of a sharp cutter do your own cut outs.
Minute bubbles will even disappear overnight! Press the corners around the device with your thumb and I recommend that you use a hair dryer to ensure that all tabs and corners are firmly fixed.
Here is the first pic I`ve taken. I am going to post in a few days the layout to make it easier for you guys.

P.S: This skin is actually on sale for $30 on phantom skins
The phone looks gorgeous coupled with the Rearth Ringke case. Take a look at the pics. I alternate with the case depending on my usual usage

Wow ... it looks awesome .... I'll definitely try this. Thanks for the tip.

That's wicked, nice DIY project. My favorite so far, the faux metal brushed back cover come close second. I'll really like to buy several back cover when I'll get my job back (low season at the company I work for) to try all of them.

Looks great, dude, but how are the edges on the sides? Maybe it's my lack of knowledge about these sheets of carbon fiber, but is it not rough and ugly around the edge (if you're looking at the phone from the front)?
Maybe I need to wait for more pictures

Looks awesome, good job!

You are actually right Ryjabo. The front edges are ugly in the pic, but it was taken just after application. Am gonna use the hairdryer to make it much better, and post some pics when am back home

Dude that's sick. I'll be picking up a 3rd battery door cover via local (spcs store) just for this.
But how did you cut the camera, flash and speaker slots so clean and neat?

Well, to achieve this just remove the back cover of the phone and apply the vinyl.
Once you are satisfied with the overall result (air bubbles etc..), just turn over the back over, and use a sharp cutter for the camera and flash.
Then, use the hairdyer and press the borders firmly for it to hold in place.
But for the speaker, you`ll need to be more skilful. First, enter the tip of your cutter in both holes. Turn over the back cover( to the vinyl side ), and complete the cutting. That`s it.

very nice. Thanks!

done this mod to my nexus last night. The template that was given in the first post wasn't that good tbh so I just cut a large enough piece and then heat it up to curve the edges enough and then cut the excess off. Still a bit rough round the edges where its creased but overall I'm happy. Have plenty more to redo it if needed tho!

I am sorry about the template. It`s actually for the i9023 variant. My friend got better result with his Galaxy S by heating the vinyl before applying it on the edges. I think you`ve got a pretty nice result
Cheers

I thought 9023 and 9020a were very similar in dimensions? I prob could have got it to work but I'm still a bit new to vinyl wrapping stuff. Thanks for putting this topic up. Loving the look of my phone even more now

In fact you are right. They are both similar.
Dimensions (HxWxD) 124 x 63 x 11mm I9020
123.9 x 63 x 10.9 mm I9023
Well, these are minor differences but enough to alter positioning of the camera and flash cutouts.
After using my Nexus S for a few weeks now, I think the vinyl wrap is just getting better and better
I`m planning to make some reflective Nexus logo decal on the back, will be much easier to get grab of the phone at night - even if at times, the BLN is of a great help

I was inspired by this thread and so i decided to use the leftover vinyl from my galaxy tab 10 and here are the results
before anyone asks, the white cover is from ebay for the european i9023!

Does anybody has the layout for the cover?

Gelaskins now available for the Tab

As above, I've pestered them by mail and FB lately and skins are finally available. Unfortunately, the German store doesn't have them yet (cheaper for me in the UK and faster shipping) but hopefully will soon.
I'll likely buy one tomorrow, just need to decide which...
It would also be cool if you could just buy the back as I might not use the front skin.

I made my own design and got 10% off. nice.
Well I bought a skinit. Which seems slightly thicker than gelaskins and hence easier to apply...however skinit does not provide side cover, only front and back...:-( have gelaskins before on my PS3 and they were a pain to apply! Got all stretched and wrinkled...
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Each to their own. I found the Desire gelaskins i bought very easy to apply so these should be a cinch. I made a custom one earlier from one of Daim's images.

Yes the gelaskins material tend to stretch a bit and that can be annoying looking for precision. When sticking, don't try to "pull/unroll" on the surface, but rather apply/deposit. Don't know if it's clear
The one I applied didn't fit perfectly the side with buttons & card access so i had to make a lil wrinkle to do so. I may have stretched it 1 millimeter...
I applied the front above the Antiglare screen protector.

Looks good, I'll. Have to post some pics of mine. I haven't put the side bits on. I also have a wrinkle on the front where it stretched. A real pain to fit over a screen protector as that kept lifting as i tried to really the skin. The back skin could be bigger too as there's a white outline all the way round.
Still looks pretty good though.

Also note that unsticking to refit will also strech the sticker. So better care on first attempt.

so how strong is the protection kinda scared from going from a gel case to a skin.
and is it hard to apply? did you guys use any soap water etc?
They're easy to apply, it just stuck to the screen protector and gave me grief. My desire one was easy and i removed it and reapplied it with no problems. If you're not using a screen protector then it'll probably be easy on the tab too.

It can be removed cleanly for the tab, no residue, and the sticker is strong enough so it won't tear up. But switching often, I don't think so. From what I seen, the sticker will stretch as you pull to unstick, especially the narrow parts: sides/front. So even taking great care, IMO it will be hard & long to put back cleanly.

Hi There!
If you've received your Galaxy Tab GelaSkin, you've probably noticed there's something wonky with the top and bottom artwork. You were probably like, "What's up with that, GelaSkins? You're normally so awesome!". Well, we've realized our mistake and we're sorry. Like, reeeeally sorry. We're going to send you out a brand spankin' new skin with the correct artwork orientation and hope for your understanding. We love you.
xoxo
us
I bought 4 to get 1 free in mid december.
So, I don't really understand what they mean by "wonky... top and bottom artwork...orientation". Sure I noticed all the edge stickers didn't really "match" the back and front design, but holding my GT it in a case that didn't bother me that much.
In some designs that does not even make a difference as they're one color.
Well, GelaSkins fixed the mistake, and are sending me 4 skins for free without even asking...
Awesome... If you bought yours early, you're probably in that case.
Thanks for that, I'm going to email them and see if they'll do that for me as mine is wonky and they emailed me a low res wallpaper, less than the res of the tab!

What about this case?

This one looks interesting. It looks like it wraps all the way around the side of the phone, and slides apart on the back to open. This might keep from having the issue of jamming the screen cover in between the slider mechanism.
Has anyone ever used this brand? I'm curious if it is worth it.

I am definitely interested in this too, I used to have a slider case for my touch pro that worked very well, but it was a side slider. I'm curious how that wrap around would mess with how you hold your phone though
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
What do they mean by the "sliding mechanism is on the back of the handset rather than the front or sides"?
Well I haven't actually seen the case in person, but I'm guessing its similar to my old case for my tp in that I didn't clip to the phone. You would put the bottom on, then the top by sliding the pieces together into their slides. This held it on the phone and made for no pulling apart the phone by the clips being in between the two halves. I've really been surprised that design didn't catch on a lot better then it did. I loved it!

sounds intriguing id like to hear if someone gets this and what they think
I just ordered it. I'll report back with what I find.

I am highly debating getting this, I already have the max coverage invisible shield on my phone, but I would feel better if it had some rubber surrounding it. But I want to hear real world reviews before I jump.
This case isn't rubber. It feels like a hard plastic that is slightly rubbery. Feels VERY similar to the back of the evo shift 4g(without the case of course)

I got mine today. But its loose at the top right of my phone. Its like it doesn't fit all the way. So I'm going to return it and patienly wait for another one.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
How does it attach to the phone? Does it actually clip to it, or do the two pieces of case hold to each other? I have a few extra batteries and I want to be able to pop off the back easily, and that usually breaks the tabbed ones. So if this holds on like I think it does, it's perfect for me. How does it feel protective wise? Like are you pretty confident it will protect the phone? or does it still leave a wavering feeling like I better never drop this thing or it's shot? lol

Mine is starting to get like that too. It doesn't bother me too much though.
@unityjasont: The two sides are independent from each other. The backpiece clips onto the rear part of your phone and the top piece onto the screen/slider portion. Then you match them up so that they are on the track. It feels very solid to me. I've actually dropped my phone twice since I got this case. Just scuffed up the case a little bit and I rubbed off the scratch easily each time. It's pretty easy to pop off the backpiece. It doesn't feel as though it's going to break. I also forgot to mention that the camera, flash, and volume rocker are now recessed. So there's no worrying about scratching the camera lens, and there's a lot less accidental volume key pressing.
I took some pictures as well as a video with my macbook's crappy camera.

glad your happy
Sorry, I just don't get the piece that slides up with the screen. Seems kind of strange and in the way.
Is there a point to this thing?

ATT screen protectors

I picked up the 3-pack of Att screen protectors from the att store the day I got my phone. They came with a cleaning cloth and applicator. Application was super easy and the feel of them is really smooth (much better than the squeaky feel of the zagg/invisishield ones). No water solution for these either. Its been a couple days now and absolutely no lifting and no bubbles. They're about an 1/8" too short to completely cover the entire front face of the phone, but they do cover the entire display no problem. If you line them all the way up to the bottom they will go to a little over the 'LG' logo up top. Oh and no affect on the touch screen sensitivity.
So if you don't feel like waiting for screen protectors to ship to you then I definitely recommend these at $10 for a set of 3.

It is actually very smooth. Easy to slide your finger around. Unlike most, it is just a little thicker than others. It is definitely not squeeky feeling. It has just enough of a matte finish to be strong, but doesn't sacrifice screen clarity. All in all, you will be very pleased with the purchase and chances are likely that you won't want to go with anything else.

Inspire screen protectors fit exactly on the screen, except they are a little rounded at the edge but you wont even notice that. Side to side and up and down it is an exact fit. So if you can't get your hands on any thrill.protectors pick up some inspire protectors and they work just fine.

Metal frame design change

Here's the deal, I had an iPhone 3gs long time ago. That shiny metal frame around the screen was just not for me. I tought : "Why not brush this thing up?" I asked my friend Google (maybe in 2009) and did it. Just amazing.
What do you guys think about doing that on the nexus 4 ?
file it down to black maybe.. mines already dented.. looks really ugly! unless i paint it 0.0
If you want to, go for it. I'm also one of those that took some sandpaper to the chrome bezel because I also thought it was always scuffed pretty bad after normal use, and after doing that it looked awesome. Also helped with the resale value back when I got my first android device (Infuse 4G).
Main thing about the N4 though, to its benefit the shiny trim is a dark chrome, which imo looks right, plus mine is covered up by my case for the time I had it thus far and she hasn't got beat up too bad yet.
I say go for it, if it looks sweet, you'll probably be the founder of this technique and have a bunch of people follow. If not, it'll still be unique.

That's what people use as an alternative to protect their trucks bed instead of the plastic liner. Its what I got in mine(different brand). I've seen a truck had the whole paint job done with it... looks closer to a slight textured matte finish. The phone in that link was crap. If you do want something like this on your phone, look for the ones than have less texture/clumps. Speedliner is smoother and they also sell spray cans of that stuff at the auto parts store.

Nexus 4 Back Glass Replacement with Mahogany Veneer

The back glass on my Nexus 4 broke some weeks back. Short term I placed a large sticker over it knowing that I wanted to eventually do something more permanent.
Over the weekend I cracked out the glass, then cut/shaped a Mahogany veneer back replacement. In total I made 4 backs because the first 3 failed in one way or another... The one I finally installed is not perfect, but my time was running out...
Time lapse of the process... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJyJMAYHteI
Enjoy, and let me know if you have any questions.
It's a little rough looking but I think the wood back is fantastic and would love to do that but i'm not sure of the science behind it. For instance, glass absorbs heat from the device.

Yes, the glass would likely be a better heat sink/transfer than this wood will be. I suppose I will have to watch that.
It is a little rough yes... in my defense this is the first time I have worked with veneer in this way. My skills and tools set have been found to be a little lacking...
I am thinking about what it would take to have one laser-cut.... (fells like cheating though... )

I didn't measure the glass, but I did measure the inset where the glass sat, it came out to .02" thick.
The veneer I used started at .04" thick after a little sanding a few coats of spar urethane it is /just/ taller than the inset.
Another point of interest I forgot to put in the original post...
I moved the flash cover over the camera and left the flash led exposed... I figured the camera needed the protection more than the flash did... So far I have not seen any real degradation in quality of photos...
nice!
itd be cool if you managed to etch the nexus logo on the wood.

Just talked to a friend who runs a small laser-cutter shop... He is confident that he can etch the veneer. I think I would want to etch something more personal than "NEXUS" though...
I was thinking if I went with a wood back, I'd do a little woodburned engraving. It would add a little grip as well to the back.

I have seen reports of the CPU reaching 106 deg F. Certainly not enough to catch fire to the wood, but possibly enough to discolor it. As stated earlier the wood will not transfer the heat the way the glass would. However, I don't figure that wood is any worse than the plastic backs you find on most other phones...
Could you just use one of those instead and use glue to fix it? I don't know what it looks like under the glass.

I think those are designed to sit on top of the glass... nice looking but I doubt they are thick enough to replace the glass.
I think it looks decent.
