Attempting to root the phone, but apprently unlocking the bootloader wipes the phone, how would I backup/restore and settings? such as handcent, contacts, apps etc
This might not help since I haven't ran non rooted android in over a year. I do know for the apps you can use app manager or any other type. I use app manager to backup app to sd. Then when when root just install app manager first then mass install all the apps I was running. also handy when setting up app 2sd

root is required to run titanium backup...seems he may be in a catch-22.
I assume all of your contacts are sync'd with your google account, yeah? If so, do this...
look up wavesecure in the market. Install it and set it up. Accounts are free for only a week or so longer. This is an app you should have anyways. Once setup, backup your sms/mms. If you don't care about your texts, then ignore this setup. Once you are setup again, install this app. If your phone ever goes missing, you will hate yourself for not using it.
Now move forward with your unlocking, rooting, flashing, etc. Once you are setup, purchase a backup solution (my backup or titanium) and take full advantage of it Of course, setup wavesecure to restore if you backup up your texts.
oops... my bad... guess I wasn't thinking... or reading properly...
Hi,
i'm slightly confused about the different backup applications available and i hope you guys could aid me =)
1. ClockworkMod Recovery: if we follow the steps in the ClockworkMod Recovery for Galaxy S i9000 post, will it back up the entire FW along with its custom roms, apps, contacts, sms etc?
so would that mean that i could reflash this backed up copy if the newer FW is not to my liking? alternatively is the apps and settings within transferable to new firmware?
2. Are there any apps that solely backups the sms, contacts, apps etc so that we can apply to the newly flashed FW? (so that we wont need to reinstall the entire applications etc, and also lose all the sms and settings). Eg titanium, or backup pro?
3. Lastly, alternatively is there anyway i could transfer these settings out from the phone prior to flashing? and subsequently reintroduce them back once flashing is complete.
Thanks for helping!
I would also like to know answers to these questions because I want to backup my ENTIRE phone (firmware+apps+sms+contacts+settings+...) if my phone ever gets broken so I could collect my warranty.
And if I flash to newest firmware I will not lose all my apps+sms+contacts+settings+... cause it would be a pain to reinstall all the apps and update all my contacts & settings.
currently i use mybackup pro
it backup my apps, contacts and SMS
but it doesn't restore my settings
i search a tool to restore the phone (without the firmware itself)
so when i flash a new firmware i only need to install that tool or run that tool (if it is a script for example) and it will restore all apps/settings/contacts/sms/images....
reply to above
same.. just like u guys... i was also looking for answers and help when i created this post.. hoping that someone could point us in the right direction =)
there are programs that can backup solely the SMS or call log, just search SMS backup or Call log backup and you will find it
for contacts, i use Kies; for app, i use Astro.... that's the programs i used when i flash my SGS from the original one to JP3
if you want full restore, go for Titanium, but hat requires root

CWM restores back your backup to its original settings, because it takes an image of your phone os. It is just like your disk image backup of your pc or notebook. Hence, this is useful when you don't like the custom roms you have just flashed.
Titanium Backup backups all your apps and settings, but the shortcoming of it is you will have to spend a little more time to relayout your homescreen and also tweak a little of your settings. For example, I used the Missed Call 0.9.2 and I did the backup cum settings. But I still need to tweak back the actual ringtones for those settings manually.
Most will say that CWM is better, but that is not necessary. Titanium Backup will be most useful when you have flashed a rom and found that you want to keep the new rom. Now, having TB to do your backup will be very much easier in this case.
The others like Mybackup Pro, backup sms, mms, those are found in the market. Kies is good if you want to keep your contacts in the phone (not SIM or Google)
Hope this explanation helps you guys.
Good evening guys,
I tried to backup my diary entries using Titanium Backup, but when I tried to restore them on the new Firmware they didn't appear. Same for my SMS Messages...
Could you tell what exactly I have to backup?
Thank you for your help!
Backup Methods Before Flashing?
I've been using MyBackupPro, but it does not save any of my settings. I have to set up a lot of stuff like email accounts and so on every time I flash.
Is there a better way?
Have you tried titanium backup? I find it works best.

No I haven't yet. I read reviews of MyBackupPro, saying it's the best So I bought it.
Does Titanium Backup save preferences, including passwords and email settings?

Hey,
I believe it does, it saves all of my preferences with games like Alsphalt so it should do the same with your e-mail.
Try it, it's free.

I hope someone is, that would be best option, titanium is brilliant though and has saved me a few times, I have it scheduled to backup everynight.
I also use Mybackup pro for sms and call logs etc.
neither can bring your homescreen widgets back as before.
Is there anything that saves your facebook/google links in contacts? That's the thing I find most annoying having to go back through them one by one...
Titanium backup in its current form is not functioning correctly on my phone aswell as many other galaxys users
yes - unfortunately Titanium Backup currently won't backup the databases :-(
Best backup app for galaxy?
Is there anything out there which will backup our apps, contacts etc before I flash a new rom to my phone? Is it possible in kies? I'm loath to have to link my face book and google mail contacts again
Backup apps/settings to PC? possible?
Hi all, i have seen many threads regarding backup apps such as wave/titanium pro etc but im wondering if its possible to backup to a PC?
as much as its a naughty word, i liked apples way of backing up using itunes. you simply plugged in your phone and voila its backing up into a friendly restorable format.
i just want a simple backup of my device encase i flash to others roms.
is this possible?
i don't know of such application.
but what is so bad about backing it up to the External SD card?
you want your backup to be with you all the time, so in case of "OMG! happens", you can easily Hard Reset, then restore from backup from the SD card.
once on the SD card, you can easily copy it over to your PC, the next time you hookup your USB cable.
if you want it done automatically, you can always create a script on your PC to grab X files from X folder every time the USB connects to X device
I love the backup software from PalmOS, they works automatically just as you wanted.
I never found a good one that actually works on WinMobile
in Android it's almost perfect, it just missing the part to sync the backups to the desktop automatically.
But that's a minor thing, as you can do the batch command mentioned above.
you can try this one for size, see if you like it.

Nandroid v2.0 - Full NAND backup and restore tool
else you can go for PAID applications such as... Titanium Backup and many other ones
never thought of it like that.
as for backup apps which one is proving decent? i see alot about wave and titanium backup.
Yeah... Titanium Back-up is great. You can even try MyBackup Pro. Both are equally good.
MyBackup Pro restores all the apps perfectly but is not able to link those to the Android Market...
what do you guys use to backup all your data before changing firmware
I already flashed my girlfriend's galaxy S twice
and each time i was installing and configuring the device as she want...
Once again there is a new firmware that correct some interesting part (GPS)
but i REALLY don't want to loose 2 hours of my time to
a: install the apps my gf has
b: configure the device (font, ring tone, volume ...)
so question : what are you using to save the time of installing/configurating...
thanks in advance
I'm also interested to know how you make it.. Thanks

Been using Titanium Backup (donated ver.), so far so good.
SO EXCITED! I just rooted my Captivate, set the database for side loading did a backup with ROM Manager and with Titanium and now I AM READY TO GET A CUSTOM ROM!
Before I do though quick question....
Should I unistall all apps before flashing? Not sure how that would work.
Or can I leave them on there? If I do have to uninstall... Can I then just restore them to the new ROM with Titanium?
THANKS!
No need to uninstall apps
When restoring with titanium only restore user apps. Do not restore nandroid made be clockwork
Thanks! Wish me luck!
If you have read, luck is not needed
Hey guys whats the best way or is there a way to restore all your contacts and text messages after rom flash. After every flash I have to redo all my contacts with photos and lose all texts, I use titanium back up for the apps but they say not to restore system data with tibu. thanks
The green system settings should be ok to restore, [sms/mms/apn] dialer storage will have your texts,.and contact storage will have your contacts.
Just restore those individually. Works for me.
i keep all my contacts in google so i never have to restore those, and for sms/mms/call log backup and restores i use
sms backup +

I use My Backup Root. When you back up Data (not apk data), you are given a choice of what you want to back up. When you restore data, you are also given a choice of what to restore.
When you restore APK+ Data, you are restoring data from the apks, not system data (with My Backup, TiBu may be different).
The only downside to my backup is most roms don't preload it like tibu. You gave to download from market after every flash.
If this has been any help, please don't forget to hit Thank You.

if you copy the apk somewhere and put it in /data/app in the rom zip before you flash you won't have to download it from the market. Fyi
Interesting, anyways i just used Ti-Backup to reload my text messages
I backed up:
[SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage 2.2.1
And have none of my text messages on the new ROM. Granted it's nice to clear out, I had some things I wanted to keep
Should I have backed up:
[SMS/MMS PREFS] Messaging 2.2.1
Instead for future reference and purposes?

Have you rebooted since restoring that data? If not, do it.
Android Manager for me. No Google cloud needed. Also, you can export your contacts to a .vcf file before you flash and restore from it after. Do this within the Contacts app.
Yeah... the rebooting thing. My ignorance, and my apologies. All texts are back now

It backs up your home screen, minus widgets. But I think it only works on touchwiz launchers.
And you can back up almost everything, contacts sms, apps, etc.for a detailed list, look on the market page.
If I'm wrong, those with more knowledge please clarify.
