If this device had Google Maps, it would have everything I want. My big problem with Bing Maps is that it doesn't have transit information. Google maps has been able to tell me public transportation routes in any city I have tried, from small cities like Salt Lake City to large cites like Boston and D.C. While there is some support on Bing for big cities, they have no support for the smaller ones.
I noticed that the new Bing released for Android and Iphone has a transit stream. Does anyone know what this is and if it is what I want, will it be added to the Bing on the Mango phones anytime soon?
Did you try gMaps? Works for me...
I had tried gMaps, but I couldn't figure out how to do the transit search. Looks like you click on the flag, which will allow you to toggle through driving, walking, segway, or TRANSIT. Whooohoo. Thanks NachoNut.
in australia even worse.
if we search for say "mcdonalds liverpool" it wont work. also no integration with bing search
booo

Is there no way at all to add markers on a map in Google Maps ?
My Nokia's and SE's could do this and considering Google write the OS, you'd think that any Android handset would have the best version of its most popular app.
Their Map editor app is rubbish. Can't even position you on the map, you have to do this manually.
Are there any apps that will do this with Google Maps as I'd like to mark a hotel location in Amsterdam and then be able to get routing info back to it... I always get lost in Amsterdam for some reason
It seems Google Maps on Hero doesn't support this feature, which is a shame I think...
I used to have a Windows Mobile device, on which I can save a map location (or search result) as Favorite in Google Maps.
My maps editor from google does this job. Since they are saved in your account, you can access them from pc using google maps as well. In windows mobile, you can see your maps as a layer but as far as I remember it is read only. The android app lets you add/modify existing ones. The points you can save in WM were stored locally in the device and not available online.

Problem is, you cannot display those markers in Google Maps and then select one to navigate to.
Surely marking your position is pretty basic stuff and has been possible for years on non Google OS handsets.
Bloody silly in my book.
A simple way to add markers surely can't be that hard for those at the Googleplex ?
You'd think Maps was the same on any platform, but appears to be knobbled on some and full featured on others.
You can use the My Maps editor to mark you stop or add points. You will need to open your map in My Maps and from there you can choose to get directions to the location. Also, HTC has put the Footprints app which solves this problem. Simply create a new footprint with the widget or app (add picture, description if you want) and then just select which footprint you want directions to.
both pretty much do the same thing, but you need to use those apps (My Maps or Footprints) instead of Google Maps. As you mentioned, google maps for nokia supports adding markers. the Wm version does the same as well. I'm not sure why Google chose to include it in a seperate app instead of all in one.
If you have not used footprints, it's a whole lot of fun. I've used it to mark my friends houses, work, and some great restaurants. directions are always just one click away.
Ah, cool tips thx. Bit of a faffy implementation, but will give this a go.
Never bothered with Footprints TBH, always used to using one app (Google Maps).
Mind you, with no way to back up data with any of the HTC apps, updating firmware will be a royal pain once Footprints has been used a number of times.
I got round it by adding a location as a contact and then using the Find Work feature.
Again a pain and no where near as useful as Google Maps should be on Google's own platform.
I am using Google Maps.. My Maps and Google Tracks..
They are pretty cool and the tracks app is great for cycling.
You have to wonder why this isnt all in one app though.
I have found that just using My Maps is fine tho.. and as stated above you can add markers and stuff to your hearts content
A simple marker in Google Maps so you can request navigation by foot is all I need... a pain to use multiple applications for something that already in Maps on other platforms.
Aside from no turn-by-turn which I'm sure is a whole different monster to tackle, but something that bugs me even more since - IT ALREADY EXISTS IN GOOGLE MAPS WEBSITE!
What I mean is, while signed in my google account on a browser and going to Google Maps, i start typing in "Broad" and a history of previous searches start to auto-populate. I run a search on "700 N Broad Street Philadelphia PA" on my PC, I can go on ANY browser (including any web browser in Android even!) and upon just typing up "700" will bring up "700 N Broad Street Philadelphia PA" and so forth.
So why on blue earth doesn't the friggin Google Maps app NOT support this? It can do Compass, latitude, and even Street View + Compass but NOT this? Even though all the app have to do is verify your account that you ran a Maps query under in browser and then pull down your history from the server? Why? WHY?! I'll listen to any bs on why there isn't no turn-by-turn or anything but THIS? THIS?!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
*sigh* apologies if this was already addressed and I missed it, but it seriously bugs me. if there is also any apps/hacks that addresses this then that would also be awesome
one of the many little bugs that will be sorted out in android over time...

Try MapDroyd or NavDroyd from the market. Might work

If it's a freeware, it's more useful..
I use mapdroid, its free and you can select what parts of the world you d/l as map packs. Not hugely detailed maps but pretty damn good for a freebie!
Depends on where you live, how detailed the maps are. Especially for walking they tend to be better than commercial maps. But house numbers are often missing. In the Netherlands the map is excellent.
The maps are from the Openstreetmap project. If you notice something missing, get an account on openstreetmap dot org and add it. I use 'GPStracker Lite' to upload GPS traces to the openstreetmap site, which makes it easy to add missing pieces.
On the openstreetmap site it is also easy to verify what the map will look like before installing for your area.
Anybody know of an app that will allow me to use my Cappy as a handheld GPS with terrain maps and no data coverage. I like Google Maps and Google Navigation but both of these want to download the map while in use I would like to download and install the maps on my device kind of like an actual handheld gps. I have tried MapDroyd but it only has street maps. Good program though.
Check out Backcountry Navigator. It's only $10 and there's a 16-day free demo.
Thanks will download and give that a try.
copilot live. I only have the 200 meg data plan and I use it as a gps in my car when i am in the middle of nowhere WI without any coverage and its been great. even compensates better then others for the jumpy GPS location.
OruxMaps or mapdroyd do offline maps
I am currently testing MapDroyd and Backcountry, thanks for the info.
Gaia GPS allows downloading of USGS topo images and can put your location on the map. I have it on the phone, but have yet to do anything other than download the tile of my home's topo, and to note that the GPS correctly places me at my home on that map. And it's free.
When spring comes, I'll be checking things out with a lot more vigor.
Oh, the main reason to go with USGS topos and not the other sources is that trails are mapped on the USGS maps. You don't get them with Google terrain.
Hi,
I currently try to find the best maps app. I am a fan of vector maps, that's why I love the Nokia Maps and Bing Maps applications. (I brought the Maps app back on my Lumia 920).
The only problem is the satellite imagery. For me, both apps use the satellite images of Nokia's Here. I can hardly see any houses and streets over here in Germany. The bad is, that the official Bing Maps app is using Nokia's data, too. Is this just on Lumia devices or WP8 in general?
So how can I get the Bing satellite imagery back to my phone without using any other apps? I like the detail of zooming into the maps view and Bing Maps switching to satellite view automatically. Is there any way to change this?
I also wrote the Nokia support - they didn't know that Bing Maps seems to use Nokia Here data on my phone and just told me how to uninstall Nokia Maps if I don't like it. Great support.
Thanks in advance for any ideas!
Sebastian
All WP8 devices are using Nokia's mapping data and therefore also Nokia's satelite imagery. Apps like gMaps or Bingle Maps to my knowledge still load data from Google's or Microsoft's servers respectively so you can use those if you feel a need for high res satelite images.
