ROM 3.0 - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is There a Rom for us sprint gt people running 3.0. Seems like 2.3 is becoming obsolete for all the good things. Please reply if you know anything about this.thank you much

From what I have seem we won't be getting that anytime soon. It took such a long time just to get the stable roms we have now.

there is an unofficial port of 4.0 (ice cream sandwich) being worked on HARD by volunteers in the SGT dev forum. it's booting but it's very early alpha and most things (wifi, gsm, etc.) don't work... if you give them a little time to polish it, from the progress made, i'd expect a stable version ready for beta testing inside of a month.
as for official upgrade, samsung hasn't said that it's NOT comming, however, I wouldn't hold my breath as these devices are now over a year old and the tablet / phone market goes so fast that I don't think that they are going to be releasing any updates to devices as old as the sgt. luckily, it's more or less a well documented platform with lots of great community support, and the dev guys on xda are pretty amazing hackers so there are currently quite a few aftermarket unofficial gingerbread-based roms which add many additional features, additional stability, and i find a few of them (overcome, cyanogen) actually operate far better than the samsung official roms. I would expect that the normal community development teams will be working to bring us fully working ice cream sandwich roms in the near future, so sit tight, it's coming

The fact that you're running 3.0 at all is probably about as far as ROM development is going to go on that front. As for an official upgrade, Samsung have said there will *not* be an ICS upgrade for the original Galaxy Tab. Every other member of the Tab line will get the upgrade but the original was deemed too old and too underpowered for official upgrades.

[Q] Will Froyo releases be leaked ?

Why are samsung leaking these to test, The FroYo FW must be into a good stage of development by now, I am unsure why we are 'beta testing' this and hoping for FroYo to be released working well straight off the bat,
Do you guys think we will get FroYo releases before it is officially released? I mean all these firmwares we are testing will be made into one that gets officially released.
-- mod-edit: --
Please think before you post a thread, the title generated quite a few reports !
Title changed.

Of course we will get a leaked release.

Is there a better community of beta testers than xda-developers?
I'm very happy with all my Samsung mobiles (...,blade, i780, Omnia2, ...) I hope Samsung STEP IN into this community and help us help them
Samsung: let us test your Beta please (We do it for free!)

Agreed you are mean
I nearly fell from chair.
IF they would release thier Froyo as beta to this forum - they could get beta feedback by reading about bugs posted by us AND does not have to deal with the consequences we know how to reflash - "normal" users dont.
So Win Win for both.
Yeah, you really should have titled the thread as a question. As worded, it makes folks think it's actually happened.
LOL at people's hopes being dashed.
there are already alpha versions out, if you check the Xda blogs
Samsung, your turn.

I fired up a google search and i found a lot of hits about a froyo alpha on a galaxy spica. Maybe some things got mixed up.
Yep, can't find anything about Froyo alphas or leaks for the Galaxy S, just for some of the older Galaxy phones.
I think we Android owners are a fairly impatient bunch.
In the time it's taken for the iPhone to go from 3.0 to 4.0, Android has had:
- 1.6 Donut
- 2.0 / 2.1 Eclair
- 2.2 Froyo
The phone manufacturers must have a heart attack every time a new version of Android is released and their handset owners immediately begin screaming for it...
Luckily the Galaxy S is the flagship of Samsung which they intend to sell 10 million of, so chances are we'll be seeing good support and the stream of beta firmwares shows they're not sitting still.
Froyo has been confirmed for August in Korea, and most likely September in international markets.
We've got to be patient and remember the Nexus One is still the ONLY Android phone that has received an official Froyo update as of yet. Even the Desire, EVO 4G, Droid, Incredible and Droid X are still on the waiting list.
From the sounds of it August-October will be the time the various handset manufacturers will be rolling out their Froyo updates.

Let's just hope Cyanogen gets one of these Galaxy S and starts porting CMmod to Galaxy S =)
I'm selling my HTC Magic right now to help buying this phone
Cheers,

Well they don't do themselves any favours by launching a new phone every couple of weeks and insisting on putting their own UI on top of Android.
Looking further afield: anyone think that Samsung will put Gingerbread on this baby?

Possibly but I think I have to go with the sceptic masses here that say samsung support isn't good in longterm and so I guess they won't do that. Unless ofc gingerbread is going to bring the massive UI update that vanilla android so desperately needs for usablity and samsung decides that touchwiy isnt necessary anymore.

There are developers assigned to port CyanogenMod to the Vibrant (T-Mobile US version):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729364
Unfortunately, looking at Wes Garner's Twitter, he seems rather more keen on the Slide than the Vibrant:
I like the slide better
@wesgarner so does that mean your gonna keep developing for the slide?
@XJRodzx probably more for it than the vibrant

So don't know how that's necessarily going to work out. The intention is there, though, anyway - hope it's still in progress!
I have doubts with Gingerbread...from what we know so far, it's supposed to have a (MUCH NEEDED!) UI overhaul based around the Gallery's sexy look.
If a phone is launched with a certain interface, chances are the manufacturer probably wouldn't be keen on releasing an update that changes everything because of the issue with it being different to what the buyer paid for. Basically, it changes the product, and the picture on the box is no longer what you've bought. It's all well and good with something like Eclair to Froyo since it's largely just performance improvements and some new features rather than an overhaul.
If anything, I think Samsung would be more likely to release a new version of the Galaxy S at Gingerbread's launch. Much like it's doubtful the HTC Desire / Evo 4G / Incredible will get Gingerbread updates. Instead, HTC will probably have new devices ready for the new interface.
The Nexus One is the only current device I believe has a chance of Gingerbread, mainly because it's the 'official' Google phone and has been promoted and sold as a developer phone. They'll be wanting some nice apps ready for Gingerbread when it launches which will obviously need to be in development before Gingerbread-equipped phones launch.

[Q] do you think galaxy tab will get android 4?

With ice cream sandwich coming out at the end of the year, does galaxy tab not qualify for it? As far as i know its within the 18 period for upgrades as specified by google. Or am i completely wrong on the release date?

i don't think so. even honeycomb will not come in our tab officially but thanks to Spacemoose1 we will have HC soon.
I dont think so either.. I got my tab 6 months ago and feel like its already outdated by the dual cores out now like the xoom and new galaxy tab 10 and with the new icecream comming up I dont think that itll be getting the update.. Also by hearing talk of quad cores coming out.. Im not 100% but I have read they want to push the new android cause the new apple os they want android phones n tabs based on the same instead of froyo n gingerbread on phones and honeycomb on tabs. Who knows we might end up seeing it... Until they announce it we wont know for sure.
Galaxy Tab is a high end device, samsung should take care of their high end customers.
If not, there is CyanogenMod. I get android 2.3.5 faster than Samsung's release
I might get Ice Cream Sandwich faster than Samsung release as well
Guys, we will always get faster releases from Spacemoose, the CM team, ect, as it pertains to the Galaxy Tab. Unfortunately, the device was "dead on arrival", and has seen almost zero support from the carriers or Samsung. I firmly believe that (while the Tab is spectacular) it was nothing more than a "feeler"… a test product, thrown into the market, in order to guage the public's desire for tablet devices. I'm pretty sure that the 10.1, Xoom, and other tablets were already being tested when the 7" Tab came out, and that it was always the plan to make the 10" tablets the real "powerhouse" devices. Fortunately, we have great devs on XDA, who thumb their noses at Samsung's lack of support, and work hard to get us at least one or two really excellent ROMs. No doubt, we will never see a Honeycomb or ICS OTA, but Space is working to complete the Honeycomb 3.2 port, and I'm sure we'll see an ICS firmware almost as soon as it drops! Happy flashing guys!!

Android 4 ics

will ics come to Tab unnoficially ported? Is anyone looking into it?
Sent from my rooted Nexus1
Unlikely- but possible, eventually. Do not expect anything fast, at the least, and if it does come sometime next year, it will NEVER come to the p1010
UP!
Hope the day come shortly.
It depends a lot on Google releasing the full source code of ICS. Considering that this version supports all device sizes (unlike Honeycomb) we may see the full code drop, as Google should have no fears about fragmentation anymore with this version.
On the other hand, if only partials are released, as was the case with Honeycomb, we may never see it happen or we may see it as late as winter 2012, two years after the P1000 release. Few devices still receive full attention on XDA two years after their release date and more than a year after the release of next generation devices.
I honestly like Gingerbread on the P1000. It's running fine and all functionality works well. It has a good battery life and a lot of power cramped in such a small package.
We'll have to wait and see,
C.
In other words chances are slim for an official release. I am on 2.3.7 which is a nexus s port (Boca) and very happy. The nexus s will get ICS soon so if Dizgustapatid gets his new computer we may be very lucky to see a release

Got new tab

Hello every1 just got galaxy tab p1000 and i love it. Just wanted to know that will our phone get ice cream sandwich because there are high chances due to its fast processor and speed.

Don't Hold Yer Breath...
I expect we will not get an official Samsung release.
However, we have some very enterprising Devs and I wouldn't be surprised if, once the source code is released, a usable ROM is developed.
In the meantime, there are already ICS themes in the Themes section, to accompany certain ROMs.

Any progress in development?

I would like to know if there has been any progress in the development for this phone. Has there anything happened since the release of Jelly Bean? And how about the Kernel, is it still corrupted or are we going to see some cm10 or AOSP based roms soon?
Even though JB has just been released, some people are still waiting for their OTA updates.
Give it some time.

The last thing that I read was that it would be time-consuming and sometimes difficult to port all those ARM-based ROMs to the RAZR i because the architecture is so different. The phone has been available for about 5 months now, if dev hasn't come along yet...
This doesn't create choice as dev does but at least the official firmware is being updated quickly enough, Jelly Bean after 5 months, not too bad, I'd say this phone is in a good place for Key Lime Pie...that may not seem like much until other phones get dumped by their manufacturers.
