[Q] Help with rooting - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried everything I can think to try... unrevoked, universal androot, z4root (which apparently doesn't exist anymore). I tried to install the SDK and heroroot and do it through a command prompt, but when I do an "adb" command, it says that adb isn't a valid internal or external command. WTF?
Most of the threads that I've found are at least a year old, some older. Are there any newer methods to root the Hero? Many thanks in advance.
Troy

The one click method has never failed me

Good luck

Are you doing the adb through platform-tools? It's in that folder, not tools. You shouldn't need to even do that with Regaw's or universal. You need to make sure that you have the drivers through HTC as you would to do an OTA update, but you only need the drivers and not the other HTC stuff (delete that and keep drivers folder). I have used both the Universal one click method and Regaw's (which I think is unrevoked- actually, I think Unrevoked might be for gaining s-off capabilities) and they worked like a charm: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572

[HACK] Busybox for HTC Tattoo - CoburnBrew Flavor! :D

This little gem of a phone is a tough little thing to custom install apps on, but that didn't stop the Coburn from being able to get busybox installed.
Therefore, introducing Busybox for your HTC Click/Tattoo!
FOLLOW THIS TUTORIAL CAREFULLY. This guide may brick or NOT brick your Tattoo (most likely the latter), however I cannot assure you that it's 100% fail proof. I have installed it successfully. IN OTHER WORDS: THIS IS NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED! IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT 'FLASH','ADB' OR 'HACK' MEANS, PLEASE DO NOT CONTINUE.
Requirements:
1 HTC Tattoo (The Victim)
1 MS Windows Powered Computer (I used Win7 64Bit)
1 HTC Tattoo -> USB Cable (Included with phone... Well, it was in the box).
Download the package attached to this post. Extract all files to a directory like C:\BUSYCLICK . (Actually, please extract them there).
Installation
Connect your Tattoo to your phone, make sure USB Debugging is enabled (Settings -> Applications -> Development) and sit back. Windows should say "New Hardware! OMG!" and ask "What is this piece of tech?" (aka New Hardware Install Wizard). On XP, allow to search Windows Update. On Vista/7, I'm going to have to get back to you on that. The installed driver will be like "HTC Dream blah blah blah ADB Interface" or something. Odd why it says it's a HTC Dream...
Anyway, go to the folder where you extracted the files, and run the Installation.bat file. It's the one that says "Installation" With the cogs icon.
You'll get a DOS Prompt and some text, PAY ATTENTION! My installer will hold your hand and explain what's happening. Should any errors occur, you may be out of space on your Tattoo's internal memory or something. If you do get errors, please post them here! I'll try to fix them for you guys and girls.
Post-install tasks
When complete, run the TestBusybox.bat script in the same folder where you extracted the BusyBox files, and you should get some output. If not, busybox failed to install... Let me know what the error is and I'll try to fix it.
Notes:
You can use the busybox commands in /data/local/bin from "adb shell" or a terminal emulator on the phone itself... /data/local/bin/sh DOES NOT work from adb shell, I don't know why. It will work using a terminal emulator. Try "/data/local/bin/free" and such for some memory read outs, etc, etc.
Feel free to love/like/hate/kill/shoot my work, you can expect to see ROMs and the like in the near future as I love hacking devices.
Cheers,
Coburn64
Ok busybox installed normally...
Do i have root acces with busybox now? I dont see su...
C:\Busybox>adb shell /data/local/busybox ls /data
ls: can't open '/data': Permission denied
I do see /data/local and under tho... including ../bin and ../rights but dont see any use of it...
Coburn Hi, this is a step closer to being root
can be root in busybox?
chmod command does?
thx
Code:
benno.id.au/blog/2007/11/14/android-busybox
chmod command is useless without su...If only su worked
Installed and worked fine, can run busybox but:
it runs with shell privileges
setting setuid bit doesn't solve, because I can chown to root
Do I miss something?
Thanks Really appreciate your work!
Do you have to install the new RUU Click HTC WWE 1.63.405.1 WWE test signed NoDriver first?

All this does is allows you to run more commands from the shell in Android, whereas the standard shell doesn't have many commands built-in. Could be used in conjuction with a root hack.
One step more, but nothing to do with root
I'm starting to believe that Click will never have a root method working because its underused compared with other android devices

I was able to install Busybox on my phone successfully. But the problem is I don't know what it's for. Would anyone be kind enough to post a link or a tutorial for this? Thanks.

Busybox just allows you to use more features at the adb shell command line. So, yeah. Heh.
You lost me at 'adb shell command line'. Is that some command line provided by the Android SDK?

Sorry if I lost you. Let me sum it up: It's a 'feature pack' for Android Developers, which could be used in conjunction with rooting tools.

That code is old, and apparently won't work. It won't compile either, Paul from Modaco tried it and it just spat the dummy and gave a make error.

That's the code for the old asroot exploit (used in the Hero IIRC). It's been patched in August/09 so it won't affect the kernel in stock Tattoos.
Yeah, that's what I was getting at - the exploit is too old.
We need to either:
1) Get a S-OFF bootloader
2) Find another working root exploit
3) Dig around in the test ROM and extract the SU binary out of that sucker and put it in /data/local on the working ROM.
I think I can do the latter.

[GUIDE][DISCONTINUED] Wildfire/Buzz 2.2 - 2.1 + Links for s-off Guides & Root

AlphaRev X Beta is now available for Wildfire/Buzz users stuck on 2.2.1 with HBOOT 1.01.0001 and above. This will make your Wildfire/Buzz s-off and give you the ability to get root. Follow this excellent guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130881
If you have downgraded to a 2.1 rom and want to get back to official 2.2 rom to use Alpharev X Beta or have HBOOT 1.01.0002 and want official 2.2 with HBOOT 1.01.0001 to use Alpharev X Beta follow this excellent guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132028
Thanks to all who made this method possible and to those who developed the tools used etc.... This is not my work just trying to simplify it.
I accept no responsability if you brake your phone
Will NOT downgrade the HBOOT but useful if you need to go back to stock 2.1 rom.
Right Here we go:-
Downloads you will need:
Android SDK:- http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html Google search for a guide to setting this up and read the guide carefully so you know how to use adb.
HTC Sync:- http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=316&cat=3&dl_id=1073 Basically for the drivers to use adb as these are included with htc sync you no longer have to install drivers from sdk to use adb.
HEX Editor:- http://mh-nexus.de/en/downloads.php?product=HxD I suggest you find a guide on making a GOLD CARD as you will need a GOLD CARD any way, this will get you ready and use to using the hex editor later in this guide.
Super One Click:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10452428&postcount=43 Download un zip it and save to pc.
Flash_Image:- http://www.android-hilfe.de/attachm...-how-rebrand-o2-desire-fertig-flash_image.zip un zip and save somewhere on your pc you will remember.
A 2.1 rom RUU to downgrade to:- http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Buzz Choose the one that best suits you WWE=Unbranded or chose one for your provider/carrier, download and save to ur pc.
Now your have set up the Android SDK you know what ADB is and how to use it (hopefully), you have created a GOLD CARD, you have installed HTC Sync, you have downloaded the 2.1 RUU.exe you want to downgrade to, you have downloaded Super One Click 1.5.5 and un zipped it and save it to ur pc and you have dowloaded the Flash_Image and un zipped it and place on ur pc.
Ready Here We Go:
Step1 - Open Super One Click and press SHELL ROOT it will run its commands and will give you temp root. You will see rooted at the bottom when its done. Try again if it says FAILED it may take a couple of attempts. ( Make sure you have adb working ) and (make sure usb debugging is ticked on your phone and unknown sources tho im not sure if unknown sources needs to be ticked, mine was and that when you plug your phone it the pc via the usb cable you select charge only on the phone)
step2 - open a cmd (command Prompt) on your pc and type adb shell (if you installed the android sdk and read about how to get to adb shell you will have no problem) (for me i type cd C:/android-sdk-windows/platform-tools and hit enter, the type adb shell. (if you see a $ try shell root in super one click again, if you see # your good to go).
step3 - copy the mtd0 file to sdcard.
(in cmd type) cat /dev/mtd/mtd0 > /sdcard/misc.img
step4 - move the misc.img to your pc and use the hex editor to edit it. (run HxD as administrator click extras, open disk image and select your misc.img you just got from your sd card).
step5 - go to 11th row down, you will find current version number at
the end of that row.
step6 - Change it to 1.25.405.1 if you want to use "Ruu_Buzz_HTC_WWE_1.25.405.1", the press file and save. (change the numbers to match the 2.1 RUU you are going to downgrade to (common sense) ok)
step7 - copy the flash_image (the one you downloaded at the start of this guide) and misc.img back to your sdcard.
step8 - (in cmd type) cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
step9 - (in cmd input) chmod 755 /data/flash_image
step10 - (in cmd input) /data/flash_image misc /sdcard/misc.img
Now you can flash offical android 2.1 RUU rom you downloaded earlier (don't forget to make gold card).
Now your on Android 2.1 but your HBOOT is still version 1.01.0001, so Unrevoked still wont work. So still no full root as yet.
Once again not my work just trying to keep everything simple and in one place, ALL THANKS TO ORIGINAL DEVS AND GUIDE CREATERS. BUY THEM A BEER.

This How To works but its useless hboot cant flashed.
For clockwork-recovery is a flashed hboot needed to get Nandroid.
save your time and wait for unrevoked update
PS: find a way to zip a edited orginal rom with changed hboot or find a way to take of the siganture verification this is the way to get full root

2.2 is more stable and use less of ram and the radio reception is better for most providers.
superoneklick cant give the access for root apps its shell root not file system root
I read somwhere a technique that involved fooling a RUU installer to apply an older rom by replacing some file(s) with older one(s).
I too am stuck with 2.2 and hope to see an easy way to set my phone free
Sent from my weak Wildfire, can't wait to trade in for HD2.
try this>>>>>
open the ruu setup and do not click on and let it open, look in the temp directory of your windows user, according to the extracted files of the setups and replace try something there maybe it will work, I have not tried it yet because most processed rom . zip files stop at the signature and the md5 check.
As if I wan to downgrade my wildfire in order to root . does it downgrade work ? Because u said tat "Will not downgrade the HBOOT" . Newbie here.. dont flame me~ thx..
wait for an other way to root. Downgrading the rom to 2.1 dont give a possible way to root because it will still have the new hboot. The unrevoked team say weeks a go that they are working on it but i guess still without succes. Just wait a read the forums.
I have extracted the 2.2.1 firmware and the rom.zip file within it!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi i am unable to post in Dev area, I have managed to extract the .exe from the 2.2.1 to revel all the files including the rom.zip file to which the hboot file is in there.
Do you think we can change the hboot file and fake it to think its 1.01.001 when infact is a hboot file that can be rooted.
I am kind of new to the android platform but not to linux. My device came with 2.2.1 pre installed. This is just a idea weather it will work i don't know.
Could you post this question in the forum that you posted asking the same question with the words that i have managed to extract everything. Thanks

[Q] Problems rooting

I'm trying to root my Sprint Hero by following these directions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 and when I get to typing in "sh /sdcard/unrevoked" I get the following error message -
$ sh /sdcard/unrevoked

/sdcard/unrevoked: /data/DxDrm/unrevoked.13740: not found
rm failed for /data/DxDrm/unrevoked.13740, No such file or directory
$
Am I missing a step. Please help!!
Can't help you with that particular error, but try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
That's been proven to work.
That worked, thanks!
Nothing Works
Above solution doesnt work on HTC Hero bu Sprint...
I installed the SDK as suggested..
There is no adb installed part of SDK. Whoever wrote these instructions probably wrote last year.
'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command.....
In the recent release of Android SDK, adb was moved to the "platform-tools" of your android sdk's installation folder. Check it there and run as instructed... it should work.
I used z4root and it worked fine
Yes z4root still works on the latest software

Once you have the SDK installed you have to update it. Once you have the update installed instead of going into the /tools directory, you need to go into /platform-tools/ and adb is located there. Other than the directory changes the proceedure is the same. You can also look for Z4root, it is supposed to root the hero, from there you can install rom manager and install clockworkmod recovery.

[Q] Flash_Image??

Okay so I have recently rooted my HTC Hero and would like to flash a custom ROM, but I am getting held up in ADB when trying to flash_image my custom recovery.
I have tried to put the Flash_Image file in the root of my SD Card, in my ADB folder, etc.... But nothing has worked so far.
Here is what I am doing, with the outcomes.
C:\Program Files\Android\Android-sdk\Platform-tools\>adb shell
$ su
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/CWRecovery.img
flash_image: not found
# ./flash_image recovery /sdcard/CWRecovery.img
flash_image: not found
Also I have adb pushed all the files required, and shortened the CWM Recovery image to 'CWRecovery.img' so I don't have to type as much lol.
My phone is rooted successfully, have installed BusyBox, SU, etc. So I don't know where the problem is coming from, but if anyone with any information could help, it would be greatly appreciated!
I couldn't tell you what is wrong with it, but have you tried using a terminal emulator on your phone to get it done? From there I'd just
$ su
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/CWRecovery.img
like you've done in adb.
I have tried doing it through Terminal Emulator.. But after trying for about 3 days, I have come up with something. Apparently in the 2.27.651.6 update there is no flash_image. So I had to downgrade to 2.27.651.5.
So I followed this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
Thanks to regaw_leinad for posting that!
Ah, now you've refreshed my memory. I actually had trouble with rooting my phone because mine was at 2.27.651.6 as well. I tried a bunch of the one-click methods and stuff, and they weren't compatible with it... Glad it worked out.
I think if you install busybox (via the Busybox installer app), that'll give you the flash_image executable on your phone. You shouldn't have to downgrade anything to get that functionality.
Not around my laptop atm but I believe Windows has two Android folders. One named "android-sdk-windows" and the other "AndroidSDK" . Have you checked to make sure you put the recovery.img into the "AndroidSDK" folder and not the
"android-sdk-windows" folder???
Also have you checked to make sure both img's are named exactly alike??
#Root-Hack_Mod*Always\
Thank you for the responses fellas, I tried to install BusyBox by downloading the App on the Market, and it said that BusyBox was already installed and asked if I would like to remove it or install over it, tried both options and still nothing. Tried re RUU-ing with .6 and doing z4Root, SuperOneClick, and tried RegrawMOD. Still could not access the flash_image.
Yeah, when I tried to root mine I also tried z4Root, SuperOneClick, andRegrawMOD, none of which worked for me either. I really didn't want to do the whole command line thing, but that's what I ended up having to do. This is the guide I used for root:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Hero_(CDMA):_Full_Update_Guide
I followed the directions in step one to install the SDK, then completed the rest of them. It actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, and after that I was able to flash a recovery.

Recovery cannot mount any storage/data!!!

Hi, I am having problem, rooting my HTC One. I have done boostloader unlocking everal times with different devices, but HTC One is giving me some weird problems...
To start off with, the recovery could not be flashed at one go. I had to command flash recovery ' ' three times to get it installed. Anyhow, I did manage to flash it, but now recovery cannot mount any storage /data, /sdcard as well as /cache.(Ii.e. I cannot see any file even if I click install from SD card.) Also, tried rooting via clicking reboot, it says to root device and I am saying to it for more than five times, but it cannot be rooted. And now i am stuck .... -_-
Any suggestion/help please?

Are you sure you have the proper drivers installed? You need HTC Sync Manager if you're on Windows in order for the proper drivers to be loaded. And um, do you have the mini-SDK or full SDK folders?

Yes, I am sure.. If that was the problem than I could not unlock bootloader. I dont think that is the problem here
I have sdk tool downloaded from xda. i think it was called all-in-one rooting/unlocking or something
Are you sure you are navigating to the correct SDK folder which has the ROM you want to download inside it? I just tried sideloading a ROM using my Mac but for some reason it actually did not work. I used Windows, however, with full Android-SDK and Java-JDK installed and it worked brilliantly, so I am assuming it is because I did not have the platform-tools folder on Mac but rather the mini-SDK which doesn't seem to work well for sideloading ROMs using ADB.
You need to let the device boot properly at least once for the partitions to be set up properly before you go about rooting and stuff.
