If I do a data wipe through clockwork recovery does it affect my sd partition?

Hello,
I am about to install CM7. I currently Have Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 with CWM 3.0.0.5. I believe I need to update to CWM 3.0.1.0 first. Do I need to wipe / format the boot partition first or will the update to CWM / CM7 do that? What data lives in boot curerntly and what would be a situation / reason for wiping the boot partitition? When is it ever done?
Thanks in advance!
~J
you should not wipe boot when installing cm7

OK. thank you, but what would be a situation / reason for wiping the boot partitition? When is it ever done? I'm trying to learn about all aspects of rooting / cwm.
Thank you

Not needed, running cwm will handle everything. Also the boot should stay so that SD keeps priority for recovery reasons.
There is a ROM Manager option to wipe data/cache, this should be done if changing rom types (ex nookie to CM7) but isn't usually needed between minor versions of the same rom unless issues arise.
It wipes the boot sequence, doesn't matter what rom you're going too, you need the boot data.
I've wiped it twice. Both times required I restored to stock before moving to a custom rom. Just wipe data and cache, and you'll be fine.
when going from nookie Froyo to CM7, you are changing the file system from EXT-3 to EXT-4. Remember to format /system /data /chache, and wipe Dalvik-cache within CWM 3.0.1.0 before installing the CM7 rom. By formating the three partitions in CWM 3.0.1.0 you upgrade the file system.
There is almost never a reason to format /boot. You will only cause problems that are annoying to fix.
Remember to do a backup in CWM before you format and flash CM7. You never know.
Hi all,
So if I have S2E running in my CM7 and I have dalvik cache & data relocated to the SD Card, before I do a cache and data wipe in Recovery, do I have to move the cache and data back to the phone's internal memory first? Or Recovery is smart enough to know that these were moved on the ext partition?
Thanks.
Does anyone know?
No, you don't have to move it back to wipe it.

wipe data / factory reset wont touch your sd card
I have few questions for wiping the phone?
A lot of time passed since I bought this phone, and there are a lot of garbage in sdcard and system itself? I changed many ROMs, and I want to breathe new life to phone.
I am interested in following CWM functions:
format /system
format /cache
format /data
format /sdcard
format /emmc
Will it erase everything and everything from the phone and sdcard, including the system?
Will this remove CWM and Root?
How to flash new system again, when I am not able to boot?
Is above procedure same as this, except that in this case, I am able to boot latest installed system?
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache
- wipe dalvik
- format sdcard
- format emmc
What about code *2767*3855# , what is included under this type of wipe/reset?
Thanks
This just wipes apps. When you format /system it won't boot so you can only install a new ROM or restore a backup.. And no CWM won't be deleted..
Most ROMs format system automatically. But when you upgrade from GB to ICS you should format system and wipe data, cache and Dalvik cache.
And about the code, it's called a hard reset, same as wipe data in CWM.

Emmc is external SD card, I don't really know if it formats all(music and stuff and apps) or just apps. But i think formatting in CWM wipes apps only ..So better not format it .. no ROM requires formatting SD or emmc
And you should always save backups on your PC..but if you format SD I don't think it will wipe data

I have the T599N phone with the newest clockwork recovery installed. I noticed my internal sd card is a complete mess and understand that it's not formatted when installing new ROMs. What's a safe way to format it? Does formating it through the clockwork recovery work? I don't want to brick anything. Thanks!
EDIT: It worked, in CW recovery I formatted the /data/media/ (sdcard) partition and it cleared out the internal memory perfectly.

Yep it'll work. Wipe cache and dalvik cache while you're at it too.
