[Q] Upgrade Path - Motorola Droid Bionic

Please move this to Development if you see fit (I can't post there yet.)
If we have moved to 5.7.893 with a modified kernel and radio, are we off the upgrade path? Are we in danger of getting stuck?
I understand using leaks carries risks I just want to understand what we are looking at. I know people are trying very hard to unlock the bootloader with the help of Cheesecake, and I thank everyone for that.

from what i have read and understand, yes you are off the upgrade path because of the kernel. you can get system and radio back to stock but not kernel yet.

Once the update "drops" it will be out there for people to flash themselves though just like the ones so far.

I was just worried because the updates are a from and to style system.
Version you have -> Version you are updating too.
I was worried we wouldn't have one to go "from" 5.7.893

CyanogenMod v4.0.1 Question?

It states in the relases notes that "Not vulnerable to the "one click root" exploit"!
Is he talking about Recovery Flasher that was just leaked/released.
Basically can i use Recovery Flasher and then Flash this Rom right after with No SPL Change or Radio Change From a Never Rooted Phone
What it means is that kernel was patched against this volunerability. You can flash recovery and then this rom but if you were to try using one-click afterwards it would not let you since cyan patched it. Shouldn't matter though cause if you're flashing this rom you already have root.
answer
He is talking about the kernel vulnerability that allows the one click rooting program to work.
If you don't have a rooted phone and have received no patches or security updates from your carrier, then you are able to take advantage of the vulnerability with the one click root program because if you will flash 4.0.1 after you exploit the kernel vulnerability.
I would suggest upgrading to the hard spl or engineering spl at the very least and the danger spl only if you plan to run a hero ROM. I would also suggest upgrading to the latest radio so you can take advantage of improved wireless capabilities (ie better reception, bluetooth etc)
Thanks Both of you im thinking of rooting but dont know if it would be worth it since last time i did i got a brick but i was so dumb and full of myslef after rooting i flashed the danger spl without upgrading the radio and just booted up my phone without going into recovery
Sorry Direct i found the semi relevant post to this one that you were helping out a bunch of noobs
No problem, hope you found what you were looking for somewhere at least.
You might want to take a look at nephron's latest guide. It is really n00b friendly, well written, and updated with all the latest tips and tricks that everyone has amassed since October and months of rooting/modding.
Check it out and good luck.

Downgrade radio from ERE36B to ERE27

http://android.modaco.com/content/g...-online-kitchen-optional-root-insecure-himem/
There are several files in there and I'm not really sure which one is the one I'm looking for. Obviously, I'm not going to take such a risk having a great community of people who know what they're talking about.
So, if I have ERE36B and want to downgrade to ERE27, is this the correct file I have to flash? The thing is I'm not sure because I'm reading all this "update version" stuff everywhere and I'm now pretty confused. I'd appreciate someone's 10 seconds to check it out for me. You'll understand I don't want to mess up with radio stuff if it can brick my phone. Thanks
ERE27 / 32.24.00.22U_4.03.00.21_2 radio - update zip format
The update includes the Radio ROM shipped with ERE27, again as an update zip. It carries version number 32.24.00.22U_4.03.00.21_2. NOTE: This has been superceded by a new radio shipped with ERE36B.

I try to flash radios as least possible, you could brick your phone, anyways I found the new radio to be better, but I guessed is a personal preference. But yes just flash the zip and wait, wait, wait.

I'm experiencing low performance in all radio-related aspects and want to try to downgrade to see what happens. If it doesn't help I'll upgrade again. I just want to make sure that's the correct file to flash.
Yes, that is the downgrade. I did the same thing... im still wondering if this radio works better or not...and im not ready to try the newest one out yet.

Rooted and installed Cyanogenmod. How do I get back to stock if I ever need to?

I'm not too worried about undoing the rooting (unless there's an easy way) but how to I get back to Android 2.1 like I had when I first got the phone? Can I just install the stock ROM and where do I find it?
Thanks

Why would you want an unlocked bootloader with the OTA stock ROM? There is no way to relock the bootloader and regain your warranty.
CM is Android 2.1, just a better, faster version.
If you are concerned about OTA updates, the features are generally included in Cyanogen's ROM immediately upon release, but usually far before any OTA release.
No big reason why I want to right now but I like knowing there's a way to get back to stock in case something goes horribly wrong and I mess something up (and for the same reasons some of us reformat our computers often). I don't even notice a huge difference (speed and battery) running CM. I haven't installed many apps or themes though.

That's different than the stock rom, right? Is it possible to be unlocked and run the default rom that comes with the phone? Or is that combination not a possibility?
Sure you can do that, but I guess I just don't understand why...
You can always go back to stock everything except your bootloader will remain unlocked (unless someone finds a workaround or hack)
Anything you can screw up (except a bad radio flash) can be fixed by having an up to date Nandroid backup...
Just do what I do and make sure to Nandroid every other day or so. (Or before every time you change anything in the system/framework/boot/kernel etc.)

i think you can get the stock rom from here if you didnt do a nandroid backup
If i were going to sell the nexus one some time in the future, it would be good to know where the stock rom can be found. Some people don't want to be flashing ROMs all the time, and would prefer OTA updates. Once the phone is over a year old, the unlocked bootloader will be meaningless.
Simple, in the android development section at the top of the list as a sticky, [ROM] 22/Mar ERD79 -> EPE76 - Stock Nexus One images / zip / online kitchen / rooted, or heres the link, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=619801, it gives you the stock rom. happy flashing

sure about that?
As far as I know you can get the OTA only if you flashed the current leaked FRF50 froyo; then I don't know exactly if you have to keep it unrooted + stock receovery or not, but anyway you need that base to get the ota
I can be wrong though, but that's what I heard about

Within 4 hours of a release, it will most likely be repacked with root and made available for existing rooted users. It will be the same as the OTA update, except with root.
Of course it will.
Google somehow even cooperates with Cyanogen and other modders or at least stays in contact with them. Google knows that many Android users have rooted their phone and use custom roms, so it would be stupid not to care about them.
So, switching from a custom rom to stock Froyo will most definitely be possible, but of course, the roms themselves are built upon specific releases, so you will have to wait until those are updated to Froyo compatible releases then.

It was discussed 13245234 times, you can search the forum and get your answer. Short: no, you won't get OTA, you'll get notified and it won't get installed.

You are correct
If you're on cyanogen rom you will NOT get notification of the update.
OTA Updating is disabled in the Cyanogen mods. Im guessing to avoid issues with running modified software being over written by stock type software.
No worries though. You can either flash yourself back to stock if you feel the need or just wait a little bit for cyanogen to push out a rom with 2.2 as the base.

[Q] Quick question about firmware version

Hi,
I've just upgraded to the galaxy s from the htc hero and had a couple of questions i was hoping someone could answer.
First off is there any way to tell which firmware versions are 'official' releases and which are leaked/beta versions?
I used to have a samsung s8300 so i understand the naming convention to some extent, however i was confused how the firmware jumped from I9000XWJG5 (July-release5) to I9000XWJM1 (M?-release1) and then finally to I9000XXJP1 & I9000XXJPC. It seems like the naming convention's gone out the window, or am i missing something?
With the hero all the updates are done using the recovery menu using update.zip files. Generally this update method keeps your settings & apps without the need to backup/restore every time. Is it possible to get the stock samsung firmwares in this format as it seems like odin will wipe everything? Or is it possible to trick kies into thinking your phone has a debranded firmware so it pushes the original roms instead of the bloated network ones?
Finally, i've seen various methods for rooting an existing rom. Are the update.zip files which root your phone rom specific or do they just root your existing rom regardless of its version?
Sorry if these are dumb questions, i've had a good look around everywhere and these are the only things i couldn't clear up.
Any answers are much appreciated!
Thanks,
Mark.
Hope this helps..
1. I9000XXJM1 is the latest official release for Android 2.1 (Eclair). All others after this more or less veer from Alpha to Beta..
2. Firmware naming convention is listed here Samsung Letter Codes
3. I doubt if complete firmware updates are done using update.zip. Not ruling it out but Nandroid/Data backup is probably the way to go..
4. update.zip are usually specific to ROMs unless indicated otherwise.
The sticky in this forum (Must Read)is fairly detailed, would have thought it is a must-read

Thanks for the reply.
Aye i've read through the faq it cleared most things up, was just these couple of things i stil wasn't sure of.
Is there any way to check whether the firmware is an official release or not? The link you posted is similar to what i had bookmarked from my previous samsung phone, but i'm still a little confused at to what the 'M' refers to in "I9000XXJM1", i'd have expected a 'G' or 'H'. Simarly with the JMC firmware.
thanks again!
Mark.
It also depends on region. But anyways do not install jpc or froyo betas. It will break your phone somehow

I'm on JPC since 30-Aug-2010 and pretty happy with the performance so far.. No burns, scratches or breakages to report of

I did the same last week... And I've been spun out with the whole firmware thing... of having to update to a base firmware then apply a zip over the top...
The hardest part of putting roms on the hero was picking which one to have .

Sweet. Found the thread on updating to any official firmware using kies - will give that a try. Perhaps that should get added to the faq?
