I have a 7mo old nephew and every now and then his parents send pictures of funny/cute stuff he does but I'm unable to receive them.
I get a download button but on wifi I can't retrieve it. I have data disabled because I don't have the $15/mo for a data plan.
I'd be willing to pay the $0.30/mms to be able to see the occasional pic.
Is there anyway I could disable auto update and background data and be able to turn on data when I get a pic from them and be able to get it without getting slapped with a data plan? <(really stupid policy of AT&T's)
I know I could with my non-smart phone (samsung eternity) but I don't know how to do that with the Samsung Captivate (cyanogenmod). I was told at&t does a sweep for smartphones w/out data and auto add it and the only way to avoid it was to keep data off at all times.
Also what MMS settings do I need? I'll admit to being a complete n00b on all this. thanks.
Thanks for any help!
You could try following the instructions on this post, down toward the bottom, to alter your APN settings for MMS only: http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...y-s-gt-i9000-mms-internet-settings-t-apn.html
The problem is that MMS is sent over the data connection and not over WiFi, so you will have to turn your mobile data on make it work. The APN settings would appear to limit your traffic to MMS, but whether this would trigger AT&T's data plan policy, I have no clue. Personally, I wouldn't risk it.
As an alternative, they can send the MMS to your email address instead of your phone number and you could get it that way.
Is it possible to tell your family to send the pictures to your gmail account?

Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
After going by AT&T I found some mixed news:
Good: Our family unlimited messaging plan includes MMS.
Bad: AT&T detected last month that I have a smartphone (with data off) and added generously the $25/mo data plan w/out so much a text message.
I got them to drop it to the $15 plan and have to call customer service monday to see about getting a partial refund since I didn't use it.
On a semi related note: Since it looks like I may be getting a non-smartphone, what is a good touchscreen phone that does NOT require a data plan?
Thanks for all the help everyone
Of course they did. This is the most unfair rule ever; it's like AT&T telling you how you should use your phone. That sucks
I don't know anything about current phones that are out. I would just go to an AT&T store and play with them to find one you like.
Agreed. I understand that in the long run less people probably complain about a data plan than the accidental/negligent data charges that would probably happen but it's still unfair to give NO other option.
I swapped to my backup phone, the samsung eternity. Descent phone but screen is inaccurate, calendar function is tiresome and no threaded texting (good music though). I will look at what phones they have (including GoPhones) and then get one online, who wants to waste an upgrade on a lesser phone?
On a similar note, will Straight Talk or any other prepay phones work with AT&T sim? I know GoPhone will.
I plan to get the data removed and try for at least a partial credit for the last month of data I didn't use.
I may ebay the Captivate since who knows how long it may be till I can afford a data plan.

So, AT&T kills you on a monthly data plan, unlimited for $40 a month are there any alternatives for getting a monthly data plan or do I specifically need to go through AT$T for that service?
Also, I use the "No Data" feature which is awesome by the way to essentially turn off the data to and from my phone, I use WIFI. Someone sent me a text message the other day that I did not receive I assume because I have the data turned off on my phone, as planned.
Is there a way to get around this, t receive messages when connected via WIFI or is that specific to the data plan associated with AT$T?
TW,
u do not need to turn off your connection when using wifi. when you have wifi turned on and properly connected, all data usage will be through wifi so no charges. your phone calls and txt will still come through normally. you can call/email att to confirm, i did. plus you can also check your usage online and it will show no charges for anytime you are using the internet through wifi.

I can get sms through my web connection? I thought SMS came directly from my provider?
Is there a way to use another provider for data service?
TW,
I use Unlimited MediaNet for only $19.95.
That would be the best choice if you want to have data wherever you go for less then the DataConnect plan.
Well if you're without an access point that is.
I've been using it for a while now, and I use quite a bit of bandwidth a month, (IMplus / Tethering pretty much all the time) and it works great.

I've heard this before, I pay $39.99 for MediaNet unlimilted...so how do you get it so cheaply? The tethering can be done with ease but getting caught could encurr the wrath of ATT $$$$$ !
I'm sorry about that.
I'm using MediaMax unlimited.
Its unlimited Data /w only 200 texts a month.
I shoulda mentioned that. =/
Slayer6234,
I know I have the option of downgrading to MediaMax Unlimited online (account access) but I've contacted AT&T and they told me this is not supported so I'm a little leary to change it and have it cost me in the end. How long have you been using this? If it works fine I'll just downgrade and see what happens.
Thanks.
I've been using it for about 2 years now since I got a flip phone with a browser.
I've talked to AT&T about it and they do "frown" upon not using a dataconnect plan with a PDA but I've been using it with the HTC for 3 months and nothing has happened, plus I would just say that I have a flip phone that I can only use medianet on, and that I switch my sim to that from time to time.
The tilt will automatically connect/work with MediaNet.
The PDAconnect / Dataconnect plans will still get you on edge/3g, its just a fancy, more costly way of getting you there.
MediaNet will do the same... and you dont need a tethering plan with the tilt because, well, you have a tilt.
Slayer6234,
Thanks for the info. I'll give it a whirl.
I think I might no longer be confused ... MediaMax is still a service offered through AT&T (https://www.wireless.att.com/media/cingular_video_purchase) at a reduced rate...
So, you can't get an external data plan from another vendor for your phone although @ $20 bones I think that falls in line with everyone else's plans.
TW,
I know this has been asked 4082340238923 times probably, but nobody has asked this question exactly the way I want to, nor has anybody really given a technical answer to this isn't possible, which I'd find hard to believe anyway. Why can't MMS messages be sent without the data plan?? Is there some way to route MMS messaging through the same manor that SMS messages are received?
Nearly every other phone I've used didn't require a data plan to send them. I think it is ridiculous, especially when it comes down to dealing with two different technologies/protocols.
With people like Cyanogen, JAC, Drizzy, Stericson, Twisted, Ccyrowski, Barak, and androidspin, development of moded roms has greatly progressed. I'm shocked that this hasn't been brought up and that any solution, even if one that required wifi hasn't been found. I just want to know what we are dealing with here and to possibly build support for this concern in the community.

Ah, I thought APNs were strictly for the data plan. I used APNdroid, which renames all of the APNs. Oddly enough I see one called "T-Mobile US", when I delete the extra characters APNdroid added to make it invalid, not only does MMS work but so does the entire data plan and I'm sure I get charged.
Even if there was a way to enable MMS through the APN's I'd probably get charged for it still.
Also, I can't talk to T-mobile because I'm sure they'll try to stick me on a data plan if they find I don't have one anyway, so I don't see that as an option.
What I'm asking is for a modification that changes the flow of traffic through wifi at least, if not something to get MMS working like it does through other phones with only a messaging/texting plan and no data plan.

u cant get it through wifi unfortunately (same reason that Visual Voicemail +tmo my account app doesnt work ) because that data is sent only through tmobile's data network. You can try to edit the apn's to only allow the mms messages to go through. i too use apndroid bcz i dont have a data plan, but i dont have mms.
Search online to find out how to edit the APN for mms for tmobile, so only mms comes through.
disable 3g so mms comes only through grps/edge
also, i know the hero roms allow u to turn off mobile data (though i still use apndroid)
dont flash the new spl unless youve flashed the newest radio!!! (just a disclaimer i have to add everytime i mention anything requiring it)

Well see, I haven't been able to find the correct APN setting to allow only MMS to go through. There use to be a way as mentioned by the user "dave" on this site, but T-mobile blocked it awhile ago: http://inportb.com/2008/12/29/using-a-g1-without-a-data-plan/#comment-436
So if I flashed to a Hero rom I should have support for both SMS and MMS without a data plan because Hero roms have an option to shut off the data connection?
What if I unlocked my phone and connected to an AT&T network using an AT&T APN, could I get MMS that way?
Sorry for my ignorance on any of these technicalities. I haven't seen any conclusion come to this issue, anywhere on the internet, in every android community I've been to so I want to find at least a feasible conclusion to this.

i dont know if it would work. i dont have a data plan nor mms. i dont see why i wouldnt work though. maybe someone will provide additional input
if you have tmobile, connecting to an ATT apn won't do you any good. the reason it has to be sent by tmobile is because its tmobiles data. att cannot access your MMS. The mms isnt sent through the regular internet, it is ONLY over mobile internet. there isnt anyway to find them online and have them downloaded. its like a phone call. you can't just find it online, its only on the carriers airwaves
EDIT: Try what dave said but with these settings

Well I tried that, and MMS worked but so did the rest of the internet. That's the problem--MMS will work but so does the internet, so I can't help think that I'm going to get charged for that. So does that mean I was connected to the mobile internet or the data plan? I'm confused with entering that data, This is what I did:
APN: wap.voicestream.com
Server: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS proxy: 216.155.165.050
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
Is there a way somebody could create an application to help with this?? Maybe make a driver or whatever it would be called for WiFi to be used as an APN. I don't know, something to remedy this. Please! Thanks greatly for your help already, B-man.

No I don't. And probably connecting to the data network for short intervals like I am probably isn't a good idea, since I assume data usage adds up real quickly of which I'll get charged for.

Well I thought if you didn't have a data plan then you get charged by the megabyte. Am I wrong? Is there any way I can check without having T-mobile pushing one on me if I call them since it is suppose to be required?
And my settings are as described in my second to last post, I can use the default "T-mobile US" settings too which I think only varies by the "MMS port" which is 8080.
Originally I put my dad's SIM card in my phone to setup Android and he has the data plan. We're on a family plan. Maybe coming from a SIM with the data plan caused mine to glitch up, I really don't know.
you could check your tmobile account online
are you on cupcake 1.5, cyanogens, jacxrom ?
and if you do get to check your tmobile account online and there is no change
price wise then you should be good to go

Oh sorry, I'm using CyanogenMod v4.0.2
Well I just checked my account information and it says nothing about a data plan yet I'm able to connect to the internet just by the mentioned settings I used. When I click under "Billing & Payments" then click "Data" I get "There is no data use for this line.", so I guess I'm getting the data plan for free..
Still I would like to know how to send pictures without the data plan because I doubt this will last forever. And for whoever else may want MMS without having a data plan.
Well after learning a little more about this I figured out that I was obviously getting the data plan for free. I think T-Mobile was upgrading to 3G in my area or who knows why I had it free for that time, but since then it has stopped working.
I am still interested to know if anybody has luck with MMS without a data plan. I haven't been able to get MMS since the data plan stopped for me. And I'm starting to believe that Android pushes MMS through that data connection, so there would be no APN setting that would allow this to work right. But that is just my own rationalizing from experience, because the APN settings I had when I had that data network worked fine, and MMS messages were sent and received. Even after leaving them the same I am in able to send and receive MMS, but that's just my two cents back by own my trial and error, so anybody with actual logic of this situation, please, go ahead and let me know any more information about this!
I've had a problem with my tilt since I've bought it. I am unable to send pictures and I never receive pictures until weeks or even months after they have been sent. Does anyone know what the problem i am having is?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Try running the att settings .cab file..
Hi,
I had the same problem. I noticed that it happened to me whenever I was connected to 3G for over 1 hour. Once I disconnect from 3G and the phone reconnects I am OK.
Let me know if this works for you.
my phone doesn't have a data connection at all, i had att put a block on it because i dont have a data plan at the moment and still no luck sending pictures...

I had this issue on my last phone (cingular 3125); I went to the AT&T store and they had to active MediaNet pay per use. The pictures are sent over the MediaNet, and as long as you have unlimited messages, you will not be charged for pictures. But without that plan, you can't get pictures.
Also be warned, AT&T now automatically adds the $30 PDS data plan if they find you have a smartphone. So if you go in and try and add it, they may endup slaping you with a data plan and you cannot say no. Here is what AT&T says in thier terms of use:
"Data Plans: An eligible data plan is required for certain devices, including iPhones and other designated Smartphones and PDAs. Eligible data plans cover data usage in the U.S. and do not cover international data usage and charges. If it is determined that you are using an iPhone or other designated Smartphone or PDA without an eligible data plan, AT&T reserves the right to add an eligible data plan to your account and bill you the appropriate monthly fee. "

Hi I just got a g1 and was wondering is there a way u can have picture message without having to buy the Internet plan? Or are all andriod power phones required to have Internet plans to have picture message or mms. That would suck cause it would be like owning a Chinese cell phone. Can anyone please help me thanks.
i think it depends on the provider, tmobile has SMS/MMS service and then they have there data plan, i could be wrong about this
You just need to find out your carriers MMS settings and enter them in the phone. MMS do not use one's internet plan, they use the MMS settings and data services, then you either get charged per MMS or if you have an MMS plan, based off that.
A data plan, and the data that comes with that data plan, is totally different from MMS.
How do u get. To the mms plan?
Is there a way u can just download it put it on ur phone and then set ur country to united states or wherever ur from.Cause on my htc wing I had to download a network wizard onto my phone and just fixed my settings and after that it worked. I could reciebe and sent text with my htc wing.
I was wondering can I do that same with the g1. Thanks
if U got Tmobile : What ever textPlan U got ,u Get Mms Dont Need No Data Plan. IN THE US i dont no in other Countrys =D
g1
no thats not true at all. u need internet plan in order for the G1 to have mms. i'm in the US. is there a setting that i have to fix?

YOU DO NOT NEED A DATA PLAN TO MMS!!!!! MMS does not use your data plan settings or data! All you need to do is enter the proper MMS settings into your APN list, and then when you go to send a MMS, your G1 will automatically test each APN you have until it finds the right one, or none of them work.
Where is my apn list located?
Slightly off topic
but phone plans on the other side of the pond are ridiculous. my contract is for 600 minutes anywhere in europe per month, unlimited texts, unlimited data (and none of that being charged for receiving a call nonsense) with a free htc magic for £30 per month on an 18 month contract. you guys really do get shafted
g1
that still doesnt answer my question.
t-mobile's unlimited texting includes mms, it's on the site. as picture messaging.
ive never had just a messaging plan, but they do have sms/mms settings, and it doesnt use data for mms. in transfering my samsung blackjack 2 from att to tmo, i had first got the sms/mms settings working, then data. tmobile is very helpful in porting over unlocked phones from other carriers. very. but att and tmobile 3g is differant so that part wont work

my phone does work. everything works but my mms. t mobile wants people to buy internet plan in order for the phone to work properly, so they made the phone not work with mms unless u purchase the internet plan with the phone. I dont have the internet plan with the phone. So my mms doesnt work. So i was wondering if there is a way to make my mms work. Since this site has hackers to do these things i just thought it would be possible to do this.
not sure but google tmobile samsung blackjack 2 sms/mms settings, then maybe find where to input the mms settings. if i remember right everything on the phone worked except mms and internet on the bj2 before i called tmobile and got it worked out. i specifically remember setting up mms FIRST, testing to make sure that worked, then set up the data.

If you actually read what many of have been posting, you would see that YOU DO NOT NEED A DATA PLAN TO MMS!! All you need to do is enter the correct settings... seeing that you managed to find this site somehow, I would assume you are proficient in the use of the interwebs... maybe try googling "t mobile MMS settings G1"...
But do not rant and rave anymore about T-Mobile trying to shaft you into a data plan, when that is not true at all, and as many of us have pointed out multiple times already, all it takes is for you to enter the MMS settings into your phone.

Only two pages and your already doing my head in, now open your ears, engage your brain and you might learn something!
1) get off your lazy arse.
2) read the manual for the phone.
3) find your apn settings menu (and don't ask me where, that's why god created manuals!)
4) this has fook all to do with 'hacking'
5) goto your service providers web page and find their mms settings.
6) enter those settings.
7) YOU DO NOT NEED A DATA PLAN ON T^MOBILE!
8) say 'DoH' and come back here
9) look sheepish and say sorry to all the nice people!

We can't help you anymore than we have... we have given you advice on multiple options to find out what your MMS settings are, not to mention simple common sense. If you truly can't get it with the hand fed info we have given you, try going into a T-Mo store and having them enter the settings for you (the most common sense option of all, by the way).
Hopefully someone may know the answer to my question. My wife has a POS Blackberry Flip 8220. It's on its last legs so I got her a G1 on eBay. Everything I read said I would have to switch to an Android data plan but when I put her SIM in the G1 everything was working with a 3G signal.
Is that something that will only work until they catch on? Or should it continue to work?

Do tell... WHAT is an "android" data plan?
Android phones do NOT require any special data provisions. ANY GENERIC DATA PLAN is fine.
Well T-Mobile used to have a Blackberry unlimited data plan. with unlimited messages for $34.99 and an Android unlimited data plan with unlimited messages for $34.99. Those have been replaced with the Even More plans. But my wife still has the grandfathered Blackberry plan. Everyone I've asked said the data wouldn't work because of the APNs and even if it did T-Mobile would be able to tell I was using a G1 on a Blackberry data plan and they would shut it down.
I was just wondering if anyone had used a blackberry data plan successfully in the past or are still using one. If I have to change anything the plan will go up $10 ($30 for data and $15 for unlimited text)
I took my wife from a BB to a Nexus One. No calls to T Mobile and our bill started showing two Android Data Plans. Same thing.... no need to call unless her data suddenly acts funky.
That's good news. Of course when she tries to upgrade to the mytouch slide soon then we may have to deal with that.
Thanks

Three things to say about this;
1) RIM phones require *extra* provisions, but still require the STANDARD provisions, therefore a RIM-compatible data plan will work with any phone, but a regular data plan won't work with a RIM phone. This is a matter of RIM phones being horribly crippled and VERY VERY poorly designed.
2) Anything between you and YOUR CARRIER has nothing to do with this forum. I suggest you consult your carrier for instructions on this.
3) You never even mentioned what carrier you were using, therefore NOBODY could possibly make any reasonable guess about what their responses will be.
few things to note...
1, if your using Tmobile, i know enough to answer your questions,
- blackberries have their own server farms for data (email especially, but all data for a blackberry goes through a "blackberry" channel.
- androids, also have their own seperate channels or farms that handle all of their data,
however, if you have any data plan, and simply pop your sim into any smartphone, it should work for a while, until your connection gets a time failure, or gets red flagged for requesting (or getting) too much bandwidth.
this is known as blackballing, and you can even trick the system sometimes, by putting your sim back in your old phone, calling tmo, and telling them to open mtas, (or something like that) and addressing that connection (tier 3 can do it in about 5 minutes if they know wtf is up).
but for this channelized crap to work, they are separating the non-tmobile brand phones, into a more simplified system for them...
this way, i guess, when blackberries have a massive outage (like when the Storm was released, and every storm on the planet had to get updated, and that killed all the servers, all the blackberries had no-connection at all, for about 3 days...)
my point, is if one system fails, at least other clients (with other phones) are not effected.
sofar, my g1 has been very reliable and fast with out any data plan at all.
screw their overpriced data, and run wifi.
older, sneaky people were using tzones to get full data plan for 10bucks, and just calling in every 2 weeks to get their MTAS updated, or unlocked...
thats been resolved by now, but hopefully you get the picture. and i havent confused anyone,

Or should it continue to work?

it should fail at some point, and you don't want RIM or blackberry to handle android stuff anyways.
get the android plan, but before you do, go to www.google.com and search for " speedtest " and compare your actual speeds before and after the switch.
would be interesting if there was a huge diference.
