Unlocking GSM for use on Tmobile... - Motorola Droid 3

Is the only way available right now to flash the XT833 rom? I'm assuming the answer to that is yes to moving on to the second part...
Does that mean you have to stay stock? or is there a way to flash liberty or something else on top of that rom?

Rooted and installed Cyanogenmod. How do I get back to stock if I ever need to?

I'm not too worried about undoing the rooting (unless there's an easy way) but how to I get back to Android 2.1 like I had when I first got the phone? Can I just install the stock ROM and where do I find it?
Thanks

Why would you want an unlocked bootloader with the OTA stock ROM? There is no way to relock the bootloader and regain your warranty.
CM is Android 2.1, just a better, faster version.
If you are concerned about OTA updates, the features are generally included in Cyanogen's ROM immediately upon release, but usually far before any OTA release.
No big reason why I want to right now but I like knowing there's a way to get back to stock in case something goes horribly wrong and I mess something up (and for the same reasons some of us reformat our computers often). I don't even notice a huge difference (speed and battery) running CM. I haven't installed many apps or themes though.

That's different than the stock rom, right? Is it possible to be unlocked and run the default rom that comes with the phone? Or is that combination not a possibility?
Sure you can do that, but I guess I just don't understand why...
You can always go back to stock everything except your bootloader will remain unlocked (unless someone finds a workaround or hack)
Anything you can screw up (except a bad radio flash) can be fixed by having an up to date Nandroid backup...
Just do what I do and make sure to Nandroid every other day or so. (Or before every time you change anything in the system/framework/boot/kernel etc.)

i think you can get the stock rom from here if you didnt do a nandroid backup
If i were going to sell the nexus one some time in the future, it would be good to know where the stock rom can be found. Some people don't want to be flashing ROMs all the time, and would prefer OTA updates. Once the phone is over a year old, the unlocked bootloader will be meaningless.
Simple, in the android development section at the top of the list as a sticky, [ROM] 22/Mar ERD79 -> EPE76 - Stock Nexus One images / zip / online kitchen / rooted, or heres the link, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=619801, it gives you the stock rom. happy flashing

The download links in that thread don't seem to work any longer. It just redirects me to the homepage. I probably need an account or something. Blarg.
EDIT: Still don't work even with an account.

What is a radio image?

and how is it different from a regular image? I'm asking this since I'm still relatively new to this and learning all this custom stuff as I go on.
It is just the baseband, doesn't change the part of the software you interact with.
What is baseband?
I believe its the part of the phones firmware that provides the communication with the antenna (GSM (radio), wifi, bluetooth) and camera side of things.
So, there's still a question: what's a ROM w/ and w/o a radio? It cannot be that one is without a baseband

Sure it can. And that is exactly what it is.

It can. W/O rom will update the ROM and leave your radio untouched. W/radio will update the rom and the radio.

Debranding the Captivate?

Anyone give me direction on how to debrand the ATT Captivate?
Seems very little if not no info on it.
I have 2.3.5 on it (KK4).
Not to be dense, but could you please elaborate a little on what you mean by "debrand"? Are you looking to remove all the AT&T things from the software side? Hardware? Physical appearance of phone?
The SW. Make it more like a generic I9000 phone. I used to work at a cell phone manf and we had generic SW, and then the carrier branded SW around. 3/Hutch was one of the best for being very close to Generic, but obviously those phones were never sold in the US.
Right now I am stuck with ATT boot up screen, ATT only CSC, ATT bloatware, other stuff that identifies it with ATT.
I have a phone that has production released 2.1 on it (older android) and ATT has no clue what it is, yet it has ATT software. Much less is blocked via the network on it. Want to get the I897 Captivate closer to that if possible.

If you're really into getting rid of all things AT&T, you could flash the i9000 Gingerbread bootloaders to get rid of the AT&T startup screen, then flash CyanogenMod to get rid of everything else (it's open source, no AT&T specific-things other than maybe some APN settings).
If you're wanting to go to a more stock look, though, I'm sure there are some fairly stock-eque roms in the Development section that would suit you.
Where do I find the GB BL? I googled and didn't find.
The file names of the files are often very cryptic on what they should be used for. I did a LOT of phone flashing where I was, and as bad as our filenames were, they are nothing as bad as the ones I find. Any good clue to know which file to use for each segment (phone/CSC/PDA, etc)? They are rarely if ever named with phone/csc/pda in the filename.

The easiest (and least hassle-laden) way that I've found to flash the Gingerbread bootloaders is to grab a stock ROM with them included. I would recommend the procedure in this post, as it has the i9000 BL's you're looking for.
I'll see what I can come up with. The only issue that I have heard with the I9000 files is the lack of a menu button causes issues. Can I do BL's only from that?
General rule where I was, you never go back on BL's, once you go forward you don't go backwards. Bricks it all too often....

If you're really only wanting to do the bootloaders, go to this thread. There is a link in the first post that says "I9000 GB Bootloaders". Those will be the ones you want if you don't want to flash a full rom.
I'd say a more expanded version of your rule is to flash bootloaders as few times as absolutely necessary. Once you have these bootloaders on the Captivate, there shouldn't be a reason to change them again, as you can load all the Froyo, Gingerbread, AOSP, and ICS roms that are floating around the forum.
What menu button issue are you referring to? That's a new one to me.
I9000's don't have a soft menu/home button like the Cappy does, the I9000's have a dedicated button. Probably should have said home button. I have a I897, but we have a I9100T here at work I can look at too. I like the I9100T much better....

Ahh. It shouldn't matter - to flash bootloaders, you'll need to use Odin or Heimdall, so a menu button won't impact that.
Do I need to check Phone Bootloader Update in Odin? I tried the I9000 BL from that link and didn't seem to affect operation any. How do I know what bootloader is loaded?
If you flashed that Odin file, it should have a new first boot screen when you start up the phone - it should say "Galaxy S I9000" in white letters on a black screen, instead of the AT&T globe.
Tried again with BL option checked, it now shows the I9000 screen momentarily then goes to an ATT screen on boot. I guess part way there....

The first screen is the bl splash, the second is the kernel splash.

You can still flash I9000 firmware on the captivate.
You will need a reoriented kernel from the cappy dev section, that will fix the screen rotation issues.
I posted a zip in this post to flash after the kernel to remap the buttons.

Playing around with new roms

well i want to screw around with my bionic and remove my bloatware and i know i can kill it with out a flash but i just want to be lazy. i did a nandroid back up of my phone and i wanted to know if that back up save my flash to cricket or if i use any custom roms will i lose my flash or if i do a recovery will i have to re flash my phone.
Sorry I can't answer your question but I thought the dual boot layout was the best way so you could go crazy with a custom ROM and know that you could always go back and boot to the "un-safe" side. The instruction for the dual boot method is well done too.
I think I remember a quote from most of these folks saying you (or anyone) are 99.9% likely to crash and burn at some point.

Easiest Way Back to Stock (rooted)

So I have been looking around in the Development forum and there are so many ROM options out there now. I have been on CM 12 nightlies for so long now I am out of the loop on stock builds and all. I am looking to just go back to a completely stock build (with root). Can anyone point me in the right direction for the files I need?
I have a Google Store bought N6 and I am currently on Verizons network.
Thanks!
EDIT: I would also like to be on the latest (and greatest) build.

sure.. https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=en
the only way back to stock isnt by flashing roms via twrp, its by flashing a factory image. on top of that, this is a basic element that you HAVE TO learn before ever rooting your phone.

Okay... I guess that makes sense, and to obtain root I would simply flash the SuperSU.zip from Recovery after I have completed the factory image restore? Do I need to re-flash Recovery?

after, you would need to flash twrp recovery, then flash supersu from twrp. so yes.
but, if you really dont have to, dont relock your bootloader

Right, no re-lock, so, I have, 1) Flash Factory Image 2) Flash TWRP 3) Flash SuperSU = Back to Stock (Rooted). Got it, thanks again.
What SImms said
We have a lot of people in panic state over trying to relock their bootloader, and to further emphasize what Simms said, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RELOCK BOOTLOADER, there are specific procedures to do that but locking it just isn't necessary
