I have a rooted, original Droid. I keep running into the same problem every time I install a new ROM. It always works great right off the bat, but after a few weeks or so, my phone has slowed down to the point that it's nearly unusable. Everything about it is slow: Apps load slowly, the browser is too slow for use, I'm constantly getting notified that different processes aren't responding, etc... So far, the only solution is install a fresh ROM every month.
I've tried loads of ROMs to see if it's a problem with my phone or with a certain ROM. Each new ROM does the same thing: Works great at first and then slows waaay down.
Anyone have any ideas? I've tried memory optimizers, removed all unnecessary apps, SetCPU profiles, and more. I've tried it with task killers, and without task killers. Regardless of what I do, I always have the same problem. Anyone else?
reboot the phone every 3 days
works on my milestone

So I love froyo and for the past week that I've had it (via ota) it has been really great, but today I began having these sudden problems:
I can't install certain apps (market or sideloaded), even though I have plenty of room for them.
Random apps that are normally stable just crash out of the blue.
The phone just keeps slowing down and things are taking longer than they should for both 2.1 and 2.2.
The phone crashed today, meaning it decided to reboot on its own accord, once when I was running a few apps at once (something that I do almost every time I pick up the phone) and was switching between them, the second time was when I had some background processes and I was browsing the web.
I was just wondering if anyone else was experiencing these problems, and if you are did it just happen suddenly one day like me or was it from the beginning? I also want to know if anyone has suggestions or a diagnosis that I should consider before emailing google.
Thanks for all the help,
Liam
Try resetting the phone to Factory (Settings-Privacy). Or if you're rooted...Wipe.

Does that wipe apps, settings and all other data, and is there a way to get it all back?
i was doing my 5k run with my recently updated hero and about a mile into the run pandora radio started skipping and then stopped. when i looked at my phone it was rebooting. i have task manager and killed all the apps before i started and unchecked jogtracker and pandora so i could use them. it didnt last long. the phones screen froze and dimmed then crashed until it finally restarted. is there a reason for the crash. seems to me like a memory problem. i have a two gig card with one pt. five left on it. and the internal memory is at 91mb. it always worked before i rooted and installed cm6. the phone in general is way faster and more responsive since i put cm6 on it but for some reason the two apps running together arent working. thanks for any help
Try removing the task manger reboot into recovery and wipe Dev/ cache and try it then might work good luck

I've tried running with and without various task managers and always wind up uninstalling and reminding myself that I should know better.
I seriously don't think Froyo and these mods need a task killer. If anything, they seem to cludge things up. My phone was running beautifully for two weeks and earlier today I thought I'd try out a different task killer. Mistake. I uninstalled it after 1/2 hour because it just made the phone feel funky.
Try running without for a couple weeks....

+1, CM6 does not need a task killer/manager. The best method is to download AutoKiller (which lets you alter Android's internal memory manager, much more effective than task killers) and change the settings to Strict or Aggressive. Also, two of the biggest problems that create soft reboots that you describe is (a) the VM heap size being too small and (b) CPU speeds being too high. So, steps to take:
1) Uninstall task killer
2) Install AutoKiller and change settings to Aggressive
3) Change SetCPU/Overclock Widget settings to 691 max/595 min with screen on, 480 max/245 min screen off
4) Change VM Heap size (in Cyanogenmod Settings) to 24 MB and reboot
The only other possibility I can think of would be kernel instability. If you flash Decand3nce's #14 Stable kernel found here it is far more stable than the stock kernel and (IMHO) has much better performance than the stock kernel.
These steps should rectify any memory and/or CPU overconsumption problems you are having that could cause the reboots (as well as make your phone much faster, smoother, and more stable). If these steps don't fix it, it most likely is a problem with one of the apps themselves.
Good luck!
thanks for the help.
also on the restart i got this message Sorry the applicating spring updater (process com.sprint.ce.updater) has stopped unexpectedly. please try again. force close. this is probably the cause of all the problems thanks
the changes u pointed out seemed to have fixed the phone so far. thanks so much for the great instructions. u da man.
i noticed a couple times a day the phone reboots. should i back off of some of the settings.

Yup, lower the max cpu.
Froyo Hero to the rescue
what is the VM Heap size for what does it change. mine is at 16 right now.

Its the amount of memory each application can take up maximum. You tend to get smoother running stops with higher vms; I set mine to 24.
Froyo Hero to the rescue
Ok I noticed that most the Task killers arent really for froyo and they state that in the market before you download them; "Froyo doesnt allow devs to kill other apps" or something in that nature. So when ever you use a task killer the apps reappear right back all over again lol. The task management built inside doesnt really do anything phone still lags when all the apps are opening in the backgroud. I tried autokiller but it always just makes your phone super HOT when u crank up the settings and it just drains mad battery. What is the best way to keep my hero running cm6 stable free and smooth. Ive tried everything, I got kernels, setcpu and all the good stuff phone is mad fast, im just trying to figure out how to keep these random apps just having a tea party in the background without me knowing and what method should i take? thanks
From purely personal observation I just don't see that they offer any real benefit. I've tried a couple of them and they really seem to interfere more than help. Just earlier today I was reading about Taskiller, tried it, and immediately felt the phone was lagging and hesitating...if ever so little. I uninstalled it after 1/2 hour and the phone felt much zippier to me.
I'm running CM6 with 9/7 nightly and Darcs #14 kernel. LOVE how well my phone runs now
Hey all,
I am currently running my VZW Galaxy Tab with a stock 2.2 Froyo build that is rooted and running Boushh's KhasMek Kernel V5.
Ever since I installed that kernel, I have been experiencing constant force closes. It's really not any one app either, it is most of them. So far, I have put the freeze (via Titanium Backup) on all the apps that have FC'd a lot that I don't use. Maps was one of the biggest culprits. Facebook FCs a lot as well, and the only way to fix it is to go into app management and clear data. Similar issues with random games and such as well.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple apps, and this helps for a time, but doesn't last too long. I have tried switching launchers, just in case it was somehow related, but it doesn't seem to be.
Basically, whenever I leave the tablet on idle for more than a few minutes, when I unlock it something hangs and I get an FC of a random app.
And a lot of times, it just does the single vibrate, followed by two quick ones, and nothing comes up as having FC. But, in the mean time, the tablet is unusable until it hits the second set of vibrations.
This is extremely annoying and is preventing usage of the tablet for periods of time. So, I am wondering, is anyone else experiencing this? If so, what have you done to fix it? At this point, I am inclined to just revert back to stock, though I would rather not.
Thanks for any insight.
As of now, I am constantly getting
com.google.process.gapps
force closing.
I'm running SS 3.05 and have been able to flash several roms (all GB because I need a camera) that others rave about. I have not gotten good performance out of any of them. The worst ones seem to cause almost non-stop force closes on apps while the "best" ones function but my phone runs very hot even when not being used. Just tried Steel Droid 5 over the weekend and I at least got it up and running but the phone was noticeably hot even when just sitting on the counter with the screen off.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled Safestrap a couple of times, deleted and recreated rom slots repeatedly and have just had no success. Is it possible that there is something weird about my phone? Is it just wonky? It does run normally on the stock rom, or at least as normally as any D3 can run but I'd love to run a meaner, leaner rom on my phone.
If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them.

Weird. Minimoto ran great for me. I wonder if it's an app you install?
Maybe you just have a bad app or two. You can try loading the phone stock and install only an app or two at a time and see if the phone runs better. Maybe after loading one particular set of apps you'll notice a problem.
I run minimoto as well. I don't get the miracle battery savings that others report - mine is essentially the same as running stock for me - but it is rock-solid stable, unlike stock, which tends to go wonky on me after about 5 days or so.

I have noticed something like that, I´m on XT862 and I have better baterry performance on Steeldroid 5.0 and If I give a try with Minimoto I have noticed higher battery drain and hot back of my device. So I always went back to SD 5.0. Strange that people have different experiences =).

Would a app that tracks battery usage by app possibly give me that info as well? Slowly adding apps one at a time will be a major chore...
