So thats the question : What we going to do ?
The Nook Color is dying, sad but true the support for our tablet is getting from bad to horrible. This device is maybe 1 1/2 year old, why people is dropping the support ? We need to find a way to make Nook color support stronger, Any Ideas ? I just don't wanna get rid of my Nook Color anytime soon...
Lolwut?
ICS is under development....

Lol, if he'd have posted that at feed the children website I could understand the reply, but for reals, this is a nook color forum...
However, from looking at the time of your reply you were maybe up way early or up way late. Either way you should get a pass based on the time alone. All is forgiven.
As far as the life span of the Nook goes, I'm not sure how more development could add more functionality to the little guy. It has gone WAY beyond it's intended abilities. And will entertain me for some time into the future. Sincere thanks to everyone who helped make it such a great tablet.
I'm not really sure what else is needed? I just wanted a cheap tablet to surf the internet, read books, watch movies, and play some games from the android market.
it does all that.

We might not have tons of developers and tons of "roms" but we have fantastic support... We even have an ICS project in progress... So.... I don't know what you are talking about.

Still plenty of support out there with millions of already sold Nook colors .. I don't see it dying anytime soon. BN is still selling and supporting the NC. No worries there.
I have both NC and TouchPad. Equally love them both. There is already an ICS project that you can put a very early version of ICS on the NC. There hasn't been any news about this for TouchPad except that its coming. No early test version, no alpha. There are more custom ROMs for NC than TouchPad too. I'm betting there are many more physical NCs in people's hands than there are TPs. I highly doubt people gave up on NC.
They haven't stopped supporting anything, but there are many more devices and not many developers. If you want to see more support, leard how to develop ROMs and be a part of one of one of the teams.
Barring that, make sure you THANK THEM and donate where you think it is warranted. These people don't get paid to do this!

Im a nintendo fanboy myself, the developmental possibilities for the 3ds are amazing!
I bet you could even port android to one of its screens
Well considering it's an ARM processor, would be interesting if someone tried porting Android to the NGP/PSP2.
In general, it looks great, I highly doubt many games will use the new features well though. I'm looking forward to having a touchscreen keyboard with online games, hopefully they do a good job with it.
I don't think that's gonna be possible. Sony is mightily afraid of the homebrew scene...
And I hope it doesn't go touchscreen either. Just stick to the traditional button controls, please

Just because they don't want it doesn't mean it's impossible Exploits will be found eventually.
And a bit late for that, have you seen the NGP yet? It's already got both a touchscreen and a touchpad on the back, the new main interface is based on it(hideous, but it's based on it )

After seeing Sony abandon the PSP (in terms of games, at least) after it was jailbroken, you'll have to excuse me if I'm reluctant to adopt the PSP2... but well...
And I stand corrected, there is a touchscreen on it, but my earlier comment was more pointed towards redundancy in gaming devices. There are already three significant portable gaming devices with touchscreen (iOS, NDS and Android), and I'm not sure the market is open enough for another (as opposed to a niched 3D-heavy porta-console).
I just hope that the platform has more games, rather than the sucky barrage of J-games...
In terms of jailbreaking... well... it took 4 full years for it to happen. You gonna wait?
Will totally depends on price and popularity!
it will be outdated enuff to not be worth to get a separate console for gaming by the time it comes out ... basically , its already dead before birth , sony should know better what huge changes go down in one year in the exponentially growing phone market

In Theory yes it could be done.....
In Reality, with out the Source code, not alot can be done to get this ported over.
I just wont to try. I need to say my Palm Pixy Plus is one of my favorite phones but it seems it wont be updated any further, and HPalm announced today this TPad only problem for me is 9,7".
7" is my favorite form factor for tablets but Android 2.1 feels limited. 3.0 is not there yet.
Its the best time to play around with my Nook but as I'm saying havent had much luck yet, well I have a cool name WebNook.
Do not bother
WebOS is a copywrited OS. It would be illegal, immoral, and very near impossible to do. HP bought it for over a billion dollars, so they will protect it. Android is "good enough" for the NOOK.

Yeah 2.1 is rather limited, but keep in mind that soon CM7 will be out for the nook with I think 2.2 or 2.3 and it will be much better, and as far as 3.0 goes we don't even have the official release or source yet, the build people are playing with is the SDK Preview release, which is far from fully Honeycomb.
So there is still plenty of Growing room in the nook.
There was a group of people in the CDMA hero forum that attempted to port WebOS to the Hero. I think they got it working but stopped due to copyright. I searched for the thread using both the XDA search and google. It looks like XDA removed it.
I'm not trying to justify myself from trying (still unsuccessfully, and I dont want to make any money from it) to port WebOS to my Nook but what I remember Windows Phone is copywrited OS too and this whole Portal is build around people who are making new roms, and porting new aps to devices. Plus theres nothing better to learn on than something that you shouldn't.

I really like the B&N Library Software and the Ability to Purchase Books on the device, Granted the B&N Launcher is junk, But I like the Library App, Maybe we can rip it off and still use it?
I did just try Aldiko, which is very nice, But I like the Easy of Syncing my library with the B&N Library that comes with the Nook Color, Its also far Superior to the nook app of the Market which is laughable.

I recently tried Aldiko also, and quite like it. It seems pretty superior to barnes and noble reader. The only downside, as you said, is losing the simple sync with B&N. I'm sure people would come up with a simple enough work around though. I personally don't buy books from them, so it's not too much of a concern for me. perhaps they could be synced with the nook app in the market and then once downloaded could be added to the Aldiko library?

The Windows Phone Roms are for phones that are licensed to run said OS. You won't find a WP7 ROM for the NC for example, because it's not licensed to run it. You could probably get your mitts on the SDK, hack around and get WebOS kind of, sort of running on the NC, but there is no way you could make any argument that it was legal.
I used to have a Palm Pre Plus, and besides the factory defects of 3 units, I wasn't really impressed with the OS either.
For me nothing beats my Nexus One. So having my Nook run CM7 is way more enjoyable.

Specs-wise, I mean? The community here looks awesome, and the devs look fantastic, but it is 7-month old hardware. I suppose it won't much matter for what I'd be doing with it, but I was curious to get some input.
Pls note that it is a pure eReader that can turn into full tablet.
How will the next gen. NC look? Nobody knows yet.
I just bought one and running CM7 off the SD and love it. I use it as a tablet and have readers on it and don't miss the B&N software but can always take card out and use it for that. I think for $249.00 and you can get like new refurbished ones from B&N for about $200 and I hear they even come with a case, you can not beat the deal. Love the screen! I would buy one again.
I just got mine last Sunday, and it's pretty nice. It really depends on what you plan to do with it. If you want something that you can use with a stylus, then this isn't for you.
If you want to play some Angry Birds, watch netflix, catch the news, take some notes, and do everything your phone can do on a larger screen (minus having a Mic and a phone), then this would be for you.
Specs don't mean jack (to a point) - it's rather what it can do for you.
At a $250 price point at with only slightly lower specs then the Galaxy tab (and less then half the cost) which includes a new B&N membership ($27 discount with B&N membership + $25 for the membership), it's a good deal if it meets your wants/needs.

From all my research, the worst issue with this device is the sensitivity of the screen. Even with the sensitivity hacked, it does not perform continuous swipes. So things like drawing and writing (from what I understand) are not all that great on this device.

Then this would sound like your kind of toy. Kindle seems to work well, and so does the Nook app, but I have found that the Nook app has certain books that fail to load (namely a few that come with the download). I haven't looked into the reason for that, but it says "unsupported format." I just haven't cared enough about it to really research that particular issue. Outside of that, it's been pretty impressive for the price.

With the NC, you have to try really hard to brick it. If you are worried about bricking, run CM7 from an SDcard. As long as you don't do anything silly like formatting the internal emmc or something, you're safe.
If you choose to go the stock + root, or install CM7 to internal route, you'll end up installing something called ClockworkMod which has the various recovery, backup, flash type things to help prevent bad things.
And status of CM7? CM7 NC edition is what all the vendor *supported* Gingerbread's should be aspiring towards. That's how good it is. *fanboi*
As always, YMMV.

Since the nook boots from uSD first (hard wired and coded into the hardware) it is unbrickable...
That being said... always generate images of all partitions prior to messing around with it... there is device specific information stored on mmcblk0p2 and mmcblk0p3... if you lose those partitions and don't have backups... it can get quite interesting restoring it... if you have the backups... its pretty easy.

LOL I am coming from the Captivate and on an Infuse....k
It seems its kinda weird how they use some terminology or sometimes don't when compared to phones...
Anyways great great tablet. Rivals any screen I think. Use Nook Tweaks to boost the internal speaker, just do it carefully and Dahlgin's OC Kernel to OC to 1.2Ghz.... Your Tab will like it more.
Use the instructions here. It will allow you to dual boot which is the basic idea. With the instructions, all of CM7 gingerbread runs completely on the SDcard, so all you are corrupting is the SD if you mess something up. Nook Color OS stays untouched!
Also if on Windows 7, use the Win32DiskImager. Recognized my drive better.

Class speeds are not as important as are random read speeds. From what I've read, Sandisk Class 4 is the king here.
Absolutely correct - Actually, the higher the class of card that is used, the more horror stories I hear! Stick with a basic SanDisk class 4 card and you'll be fine.
i felt the same way, op... until MIUI dropped! new love all over again
I would definitely recommend it, along with ezPDF reader if you will be reading a lot of PDFs. From my own experience, it was a pain to get a "good" NC -- the first couple had screen issues/dead pixels and I had to fight with B&N's customer service to finally get one without major issues. Most people seem to get perfect ones right from the start though. Beyond that, CM7 is FAN-TASTIC. I had some random issues with it on a microSD card (an 8gb a-data class 6, so it could have been issues with the card) but it's been super reliable after i installed to emmc. As far as specs go, it will easily overclock and i can't tell a difference in performance compared to my thunderbolt. I've still yet to see a comparable tablet for this price, based on performance and screen quality.
I'm thinking with the flood of HP Touchpad purchases someone's gotta want to get rid of their Nook, if you are I would love to buy it if the price is reasonable
Nice thought. At the moment, though, the TouchPad is still somewhat useless :3
Shhhh...maybe people like webOS more than android (psh, yea right)
I don't blame them.
Spec-wise, the TouchPad is far better than the NC, it's just bigger, hence heavier.
The question is do they got the support after purchasing, where can they get apps running webOS, are they free apps?
I would trade my mint nook color with cm7 on it or could put back to stock. For a touchpad.

Yes, you get an app store, just like iOS and Android. Just like both, there's free and paid apps. The TIME app rocks, and you can use the print sub to use it. You also get Angry Birds HD for free... but not seasons.
Thanks for letting me know, I keep thinking that webOS has very little apps.

Actually, I'm not so sure on that. Maybe no further support by HP, but this thing looks to have some rad community support. Mine now sits at 1.5MHz, and several other patches to attempt to speed it up. I'm starting to actually like WebOS... and may leave it on there.

I assume he was talking about webOS which is dead but about to get some really good android support. Unfortunately i was unable to grab one at $99 so I'm left out of the fun.

WebOS is sweet but RIP. I had a Pre at launch. After awhile when you see other devices get apps that WebOS wont get it gets aggravating. I think they will get Android going on the touchpad but life with CM on it kinda sucks. I like CM and some other ROMs but that crap is buggy. Sometimes its nice to get back to a working stock system and that would be WebOS. All that matters is if you're happy though so more power to you.
webos is superior in terms of use
but lacks apps which does not matter

Are you serious? Apps are what make an OS great. What OS's have the most apps? iOS and Android. They also happen to be the top 2 selling mobile OS's. Apps = success. Why do you think webOS is dead? No apps = No sales.

I do !

I am selling my Nook Color, and yes, specifically because I got a Touchpad.
Bigger, better, faster. Apps, there's enough for me (esp w/ homebrew), and with Flash support, half of what I want to do I won't need special apps for (VUDU, Google Music Beta, etc). Plus, and Android OS option isn't far from being a reality, if I change my mind about WebOS.
Mine is like new, -pristine-, still have the box w/all papers and accessories, rooted, CM7 w/ nightly Encore build, overclocked to 1.2GHz, lots of apps.
I'm including a leather folio case, BodyGlove neoprene sleeve + 2GB mSD card.
My best offer so far is $160. I was hoping to get closer to $200. PayPal will have this shipped to you ASAP.
My question now, regardless if you want to buy it or not, is how do I reset it and get my personal data off of it, without losing all the mods and apps ?

You're right in terms of sales, it seems. But what sells and what's good not always the same. There's way more to an OS than apps. WebOS has an intuitive and fluid interface and true multitasking that neither Android or iOS can touch. The app catalog is minimal, but the potential was always there. I just got Touchpad and started using it instead of my nook color and man, WebOS's interface is better than android in almost every way. Yes, I'm missing out on words with friends and fruit ninja, but web browsing, multitasking, and video playback are all insanely better. I thought I was just going to use the Touchpad for reading comics, keeping my nook as my main tablet. Man was I wrong.
webos is great but its DOA which means you're not going anywhere. EOL products are a dead end no matter how great they are. That leaves you to rely on something you will have to use forever or migrate away from. I don't see a point in wasting time with it.
Hi,
First post, so first of all- great community here. I like the welcome video, and attitude of figuring it out yourself (forcing you to learn a lot very fast).
I rooted my Nexus 7 very easily, thanks to the info here. I've got MultiRom running and I tired installing Ubuntu 13.04. I installed the KerneeI, and Ubuntu, but then the OS itself wouldn't load. I'm not ready to post for help with it yet- but searching hasn't given me any solutions yet.
Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone else would be interested in an eReader ROM. I haven't thought it through a lot- but for me, I think it would encourage me to read more instead of getting notifications and being distracted, or being tempted to do other things. It could be optimized to lengthen the battery, such as through under-clocking the CPU or other hardware...
Anyone else think it could be a good idea? Does something similar exist?
Cheers
Hmm. If I wanted an ereader, I would buy a kindle or something else.
I can read ebooks with my nexus and do a lot of other things with it. Why should I limit it artificially?
They already make eReaders. Why would you want to cripple such a power full device into a eReader?
If you are distracted and want to read more GET A BOOK

just install the nook or kindle app onto your device and load it up with whatever ebooks you want. bam, instant ereader rom with no rom development needed.

waste of time honestly since there's only you that's ever requested a rom like this here on these forums and because every rom available for the n7 already has the capabilities you're requesting. i suggest Slim Bean being's it's only 80mb and super lightweight, and it comes with Slim Sizer (i believe that's the name) which allows you to remove any system application that came pre-installed on the rom.
Tbh it doesn't sound like a bad idea. Suppose you gave it to a kid or teen or whatever that mostly reads and doesn't know crap about technology. Kinda like porting the kindles software over. Doubt anyone really cares too much to work on it though.

if i wanted to give a kid who knows nothing about technology an ereader, i certainly wouldn't give them a developer's device, let alone one that costs over $200. that's what a nabi2 tablet is for. hell, a nook simple touch is only $100. half the price of a nexus 7, easy to use, and does everything OP is asking for. an ereader rom for a developer device is honestly quite wasteful.
If you're being distracted by notifications couldn't you just turn Airplane mode on?
Or, as others have said, you could just install Slimbean and add nothing but a couple reading apps. And then remove EVERY other app on that ROM. Then you pretty much have what you want.

"Give" not "buy". Like a hand me down. And its not entirely a developer device. Of all the people I know who have a N7 don't even know what rooting is besides fellow xda members.

The only reason why an ereader is a stand alone device is its screen and therefore battery consumption. Yes, you can read books on n7 too, bit there's no point having a separate ROM for it, all you need is an app, or maybe a dedicated launcher. I can't picture a ROM that makes the battery last for a week and transform a LCD screen into eink one. It may be worth a shot with led displays, but not on LCD.

just because there are people that own the device and dont know what rooting is doesn't mean the device wasn't intended for developers. it was. all nexus devices are intended to be developed on.
