i highly doubt samsung releasing a native ICS rom for galaxy s as it is getting therefore AOSP is your best bet

Hey guys, been out of the loop for a while as I've been settled on JPY for a few weeks now. However, I saw a friend flash his Desire today with Oxygen, a gingerbread-based AOSP ROM. All the SGS ROMs I can find so far are based on the stock Samsung firmware - is there any work being done on a full AOSP ROM like Oxygen or Cyanogen? I can't find any details about this anywhere.
I am very curious about this question. Because if answer is simply no, it's time to sell Galaxy S. Gingerbread will be the last update from Samsung and AOSP could be the future of this phone then CM7 for SGS seems to have big problems and it's the only AOSP ROM for SGS which I'm aware of...
What big problems?
I'm using CM7 for a month right now and it's pretty stable if i can say. Yes, it lacks some features and some bugs are not fixed yet (theres a workaround tho), but if you follow it's thread the progress they make are great. They're already into mainline, so probably it will reach RC status in a month/maybe less, who knows.
After the devs are done, i think there will be a custom ROM based on CM7/AOSP.

CM7 is getting there. And with Gingerbread coming out, that should make things easier for the dev.
Yes, but with no source then there is nothing big. GB leak, only helped them with "less" important stuff (FM radio, etc.)

Hello there, I'm just wondering how long does it take to make a custom ROM? Say for example you make a ROM from the captivate GB sources vs the ICS sources that were just released? I don't mean to be one of those annoying people asking about when an ICS ROM is coming, I'm just curious as to the process of it all :-D

Using ICS current sources can take a while - 2 or 3 months to build a proper ROM that will work with the Captivate since the ICS source is not geared toward it. The kernal build is mostly likely going to be the biggest pain.
Using 2.2 or 2.3 Captivate sources build a proper Rom can take minutes to a few days depend on what you want out of your rom.

Be patient my friend. The CM team will have a CM9 nightly before you know it.

Is there any chance that cyanogenmod of coming for the SXL? I recently upgraded my device from my old Nexus s and am missing the features of CM7
You would be better sending a PM to Cyanogen and see if he has any plans for it, other then that its waiting on someone elses good grace to Port it but it might not quite be the same as it was (less Cyanogen releases it then itll be grand!)
Having spoke to Capychimp he says that a port of CM7, MIUI or even ICS will need a custom kernel. So until we can get someone working on that its not going to happen
isnt there some custom kernals from core droid and such?

Yeah there is a custom kernel for BinDroid, but that is like a heavily tweaked version of stock whereas CM7 is AOSP and therefore would need a completely different kernel, as I understand it... correct me if I'm wrong
ahhhh thanks for that
Do you have any idea on how long it would take for someone to make a new kernal?
For someone who knew what they were doing it probably wouldn't take that long, but most developers on here are supporting multiple devices and probably don't have the time to try it at the minute...
My son is getting his GN today which I'm personally looking forward to as I'm getting the GN2 hopefully out in September.
Any tips for a brand new note? It will be rooted, but is it worth updating to ics or wait until jb?
Thanks!
the first thing you should know is to NEVER WIPE ON THE STOCK ICS KERNEL.
^^ That is IF you upgrade to ICS
Secondly, Its entirely upto you whether you should upgrade to ICS, some users stay on GB as they feel it has better battery life and doesnt have the few bugs that ICS has, If you do decide to upgrade, just be sure to read up on the how-to guides.
JB wont be out any time soon, officially (if at all) but im sure it wont be long before we see some ported / custom JB ROMs.

Hi guys,
I'm using CyanogenMod 7.2, but it started to become painfully slow and it crashes almost every day. So I'm think about installing another ROM, but to be honest, after reading recent topics with custom ROMs, I really can't decide which one should I download. I would like to have an ICS or higher, but if there is a ROM on 2.3 that is way faster than any ROMs on 4.0 and higher, I can install the Gingerbread.
What are your recommendations? I'm currently interested in modded CyanogenMod 10.1, ImaGinary ICS Final and Touchwiz Revolutionised 5.0.
Thanks in advance!

Ok, I get it, but... how should I choose the best one - which is most suitable for me - when people can't express their opinions about different ROMs? Most of the posts in particular ROMs threads are related to some broken stuff etc., so it is hard to find same opinions.

hello, I cant answer your question, I can only give you an idea of what I experienced and read out there. Like all of us, you have to experience, have fun, and make your own evaluation, I begin to suggest you to choose spacecaker's rom , or you can get the stock rom with new kernel, andrenaline engine and Darktremor.
But dont stay with those, try some more a get back to tell us your opinion
Hope I helped

I completely agree with quashqool. U shud search n try n get a first hand experience yourself. Some users want battery life, some want performance and some want UI. So people review different ROMs differently. However I have created a thread to answer this and similar questions. You may try it here

The ROM Im Already Using Is Tw5 JB ROM (4.1.2 - 4.2.1) it is very fast and smooth and good looking ,it doesnt flash the kernel and it doesnt spend so much battery
ROM][CM10.1][S4 UI][UPDATE]Touchwiz Revolutionised 5.0 v2.0 [21.7.13]

I'm using one of those that you mentioned: modded CyanogenMod 10.1 and then on top of it I installed PurePerformances™X.
I've tried Miracle V4 and M'rage. This setup seems better to me in every way, but that is just my opinion. It also depends if you like CM or stock roms..
