phone for some reason would not go into download using the buttons, and also stopped letting me into cwm, now all i get is this screen.
now the jig i made wont even work anymore.

Simple answer, no.

Actually I had the same problem. Was doing a flash with Odin, it failed. Tried to get into download mode and couldnt with buttons. I yried my jig and it didnt work. I swore my jig was bad but it wasnt. I unbricked it with the Heimdall Captivate Unbricker software. I think it was called One Click Unbrick or something. Once I got it installed it worked like a charm and I was able to get it working again.

God people don't read... That screen can be used as Download mode.
1. Open Odin
2. Connect phone
3. Flash
4. Profit

with that screen odin will not recognize the phone.
tried some one-clicks, and regular odin 1.82
if anyone will consider fixing this i would gladly mail you the phone and pay you for it, if anyone is up for that. pleez let me know

@OP: can you into download mode? if not make or buy a jig...its around 2-3 dollars off ebay..
If you can go into download mode and Odin can see it but failing then just try running Odin as admin, changing cables, changing USB ports, changing computer...u r not completely bricked...complete brick means no sign of life at all....I have seen that screens many times no problem...
OP, I would also suggest looking at the connection issues post in my signature. Try all those steps to get the computer to recognize your phone first.
completely bricked means you have nothing. Phone doesn't light up at all. I would know, I've done it.

Pay attention to the pop-up about installing drivers. The flash WILL fail the first time because your partitioning is wrong. Select the flash bootloaders option after that and flash again.
made a jig with the 100k resistors from radio shack. now it isnt working. when it did work, i tried odin with three different samsung cables(stock, gs2, focus), on two different computers, odin got stuck at the same spot everytime. i uninstalled and reinstalled samsung drivers at least 3 times. I remember the first time i rooted it and put cyanogenmod on it it was using the galaxys drivers for some reason.
i'll try the last few suggestions, but if its a no-go, i would seriously just mail this off to someone with some cash who can fix it, things driving me nutz.

no combination of buttons will work.
all i get is the "phone--/!\--PC" screen.
i'll keep working on my 99 cent jig from radio shack
windows will not recognize it when plugged in, nor will heimdall or odin
all my comps are windows 7. maybe i could try linux or xp in a virtual machine, but i dont see how any os will see it if it doesnt even register when plugged in to all my comps now

woohoo!!!!!!, thanks for that link AdamOutler , i got my jig to work and the app you linked to worked perfectly.
thanks everyone for all your help
my phone is soft bricked
I was trying different roms and when i moved to cm7 i found that my download mode is not working through adb and key combination plus usb plug in methods. so in recovery mode i tried to install some other rom and after 2-3 tries to install the rom i got in position that when i reboot my cappy, it shows att logo screen and then it stucks there. when it is off and put usb cable in it, it show circles (the same for charging) but not the battery signal.
i made a usb jig and it does not seem to work. i hv checked with multimeter that when i connect the jib it provides 296k ohm on the pins 4-5. (i hv opened the device and checked the jig resistance while connected). i am considering the 4-5 pins are the closest to microphone jack
adams detect mode does not detect device even in ubuntu.
windows (7 64bit )does not detect it to be connected.
As i have opened the device for un-brickable mod but it seems to be impossible for me to do it myself. i live in bahrain (gulf). it is very small place to find some good soldering skill guy. it will be very costly and time consuming it to send it to someone in usa to do mod for me.
please help me regarding this.

So I was reverting to Rogers stock on my Captivate so I could flash a new ROM when Windows explorer crashed mid-process, causing Heimdall to fail and brick my phone (got the Phone-!-Computer screen). After reading around, I found the 3-button method and tried it, which got me back into Download mode. I used Odin3 to flash AT&T Stock, but when trying to install clockwork recovery I kept getting an error. Looking through OTHER threads, I found that the recovery could be flashed using Odin, so I went back into download mode and started it flashing. Then Odin crapped out and bricked my phone AGAIN! Now the 3-button method won't work, and I'm back at the Phone-!-Computer screen. Computer won't recognize the phone at all, and I can't get back into Download mode. What do I do?
Did you try this:
1. Start Odin
2. Plug USB cable into computer
3. Remove the battery from the phone
4. Plug the cable into the phone
5. Hold down both volume buttons
6. Put in the battery
Hopefully that'll get you into download mode if not look into making a JIG.

No go. Won't boot into Download mode. If 3-button boot was disabled or something I'm SOL. Gonna have to make a jig I guess. Ffffff---

Unfortunately this IS a new phone. I've had it for about a day and a half. The three-button method for getting into download mode isn't working at all -- it just sits at the Phone!PC screen. Gonna try to assemble a JIG tomorrow -- otherwise I'll have to take it back, and who knows if they'll replace it.

An iGo power tip, three 300k resistors taped together, two alligator clips and a pair of clothespins later, and my phone works!
That's awesome! I'm glad you got everything worked out. Btw did your three button work before?

It worked initially, before flashing the AT&T firmware the first time. Second go when it bricked itself during Heimdall's update to Rogers stock 3-button wouldn't work -- hence the need to macguyver the above JIG.
Hi,
I have Samsung Galaxy S I9000 with Android 2.2 (FROYO) system upgraded from 2.1 version using oden.
Yesterday I tried to update this system because I have some problem in my phone (shutdown automatically...). I used the same method I used before to UPGRADE the system (oden write SBL above the port number colored in yellow).
Unfortunately, when the phone was in "download mode", oden has stop working on 30% approx. it says that the com port is not available (knowing that this port worked correctly when oden established the connection). So I removed the battery from my phone...... (I know it is a stupid idea).
Now the phone do not start-up and when I connect it to pc nothing happens.
Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease help me what must I do??
Thank you guys
Can You Boot the phone into download mode manually ?
press volume down + home + power simultaneously
ps that wasn't stupid idea - it was the only solution to turn off broken flashing, but You must try boot it again to download mode and flash again but this time make sure that every file is properly placed in odin: file with MODEM as phone, CSC to CSC and third to PDA.
Oy.
As far as I know losing power to the phone or rebooting the pc while flashing the bootloader is one of the only ways to properly brick the sgs.
This sounds bad...very bad. If the bootloader had been erased but the new one hadn't been written before you pulled the battery, then I fear it is Goodnight Charlie. No bootloader, no phone.
If you can use the three button method to get to download mode as the post above me suggested, you will be alright.
If not....maybe a jig but I would doubt it.

You seem expert so you can find a creative solution
try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551 or give it to nearest samsung service, just say it is broken doesn't start - do never ever say its broken because i flashed it

i would strongly suggest you first try building the jig with resistors
if that doesn't get you into download mode, then you can take the phone to your provider.

if you see this then it can be saved, if its just a black screen you are kind of screwed
Does the phone show any reaction? Does the acreen show anything? Any Sound? If it's just a black stone and doesnt react at all, send it to Samsung and as reason for the phone to be bricked, just say Kies f***ed it up while you tried to sync contacts or so. I did that one week ago and as you can see it's working again.
Well if it shows reaction try building your own jig as mentioned in the thread above or buy one from ebay to boot your phone into download mode.

ONLY black screen. The phone is out of warranty, will this cost a lot? they will fix it by hardware (change a part) or by software?
Try this:
1. Take everything out of the phone (sim, micro sd, battery)
2. Press volume up+home+power
3. Put the battery back in while still having the three buttons pressed.
4. Hopefully you are in download mode.

I've been trying for a couple months now to get into download mode. This is the first time ive seen anything on the screen since trying. Under my thumb is an asterisks (*) on the left edge of the display, but i can never get anywhere. I've tried all methods from http://samsungcaptivate.wikia.com/wiki/Putting_the_Phone_into_Download_Mode
Nothing lets me in! But im gonna keep trying...
I got it again! It says:
RST_STAT = 0x1
PMIC_IRQ1 = 0x0
PMIC_IRQ2 = 0x0
PMIC_IRQ3 = 0x14
PMIC_IRQ4 = 0x0
PMIC_STATUS1 = 0xc0
PMIC_STATUS2 = 0x2c
Any idea what that is? I plugged the phone into the comp with the USB cable, no battery, no sim card, no sd card. after plugging it in i held volume UP + power and put in the battery and it came up!
Remove every thing batter sim memory card, Press both volume plug in the cable then battery, Or both volume then battery and then cable or make a jig it will 100% work.
Its actually working now, its getting into download mode just fine, i think my problem was a cable that just doesnt want to work, i have to position it JUST Right to get a connection with the PC that sticks, or else it connects and disconnects immediatly!
So im on Linux (Ubuntu 11.04) and im using Heimdall One-Click to try and flash Android back on, but i get errors... every time...
The main one im getting is when its trying to setup the interface after i click flash, it just sits there forever and if i click the details button, it shows that it failed.
Any ideas?
Ok, here's the error information when it DOES connect and tries to upload the kernel:
Code:
Claiming interface again...
Setting up interface...
Beginning session...
Handshaking with Loke...
Downloading device's PIT file...
PIT file download sucessful
Uploading KERNELKERNEL upload failed!
Ending session...ERROR: Failed to send file part packet!
Clearly not a lot of information, but i'm using Terminal to run the jar file in administrator mode, and it does this each way.. I think im goin to reboot and try odin one-click in windows and see if i get anything different?
Ok back in Windows 7. Using the AIO toolbox, im doing the 1 click flash to stock option, and in Odin, this is what i see after hitting the start button:
Code:
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
<ID:0/004> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/004> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
Never really changes from that....? I've also tried Odin 3-Click where i select the PIT file and the PDA file (the firmware file) and do it that way but that also freezes and doesnt continue... Any ideas?

Nope, grabbed the shiny new one thats only been used a few times. I can get into download mode, but nothing will flash... And the ONLY way to get into download mode is to plug in the usb cable and hold down the volume buttons when putting in the battery, no other "simple" method works (havent tried the jig or unbrickable mods).
Wow i finally got it! Its actually progressing through the flash right now, and i think i know what happened.
In windows, when you connect and disconnect a device, windows lets you know with sounds... Well with a new cord or old cord, the phone would reconnect a few times (many more with the old cord) when plugging it in and getting it going, and when it does it many times, the flash doesnt work...
But when i connect it the first time and am careful not to move anything so that it connects only once and i click the start button, it works!
It just passed the AT&T logo and finished the animation for the Galaxy S logo.. Wow its gonna work! Sweet jebus!
Glad it is working.
it did seem from what you were posting you were having a connection problem such as a bad cable.

That's it.
you also won't be able to get into recovery.
If you're going to flash bootloaders with your connection issues it is quite possible you will hard brick if it disconnects while the flash is in progress.
I lost connection to the PC when reflashing back to Stock 2.3.5 and now the phone only displays a picture of a phone and a PC with a triangle warning sign between them. (wish I could post the pic).
I can't get into download mode or recovery mode. Tried 3-button and USB cable method but no luck. Any ideas before I panic? Do I likely need a jig to fix?
Thanks!

Having a Jig is always a good idea. Remove battery, open Odin, connect phone in PC press Vol up and down, insert battery. If that doesn't work then get a jig.
If for whatevever reason after the Odin process you get the "Firmware Upgrade fail !, Try using recovery mode" screen,
don't worry. Treat that screen just like the regular download screen. Go ahead and pull the battery and
get back into download mode (that failure screen will come up), Odin should recognize your phone and then you can repeat
the Odin process. And it should Pass.
Thanks for reply. Tried everything to get Odin to recognize but no luck. Might need to see how fast I can get a jig...
If ur screen has the "Firmware upgrade fail etc., etc." then Odin will recognize ur phone. Close the Odin, then right click it and run as administrator, then connect ur phone to the computer (use a usb in the back of it if u r on a desktop or first port on a laptop--don't use a usb hub). Then if the com port on Odin turns yellow, u r good to go.

Looks like I hard bricked my cappy finally after a year and a half of flashing it...it is my fault, I thought my cable was securely plugged into my computer, but my cat decided to walk in between my phone and the computer, unplugging it during an Odin flash...Now all I get is a black screen and nothing. I reseated the battery, same deal....did the whole, remove battery, hold down vol up and vol down and plugged in usb and then placed battery in and still no love....I also tried the normal, remove battery, replace battery, hold down vol up and vol down and then plugging in usb...nothing...computer doesn't beep as to recognize a usb deivce has been plugged in and I even booted into my Linux box and it doesnt see it...I think I finally killed it...I do have a Jig on order though that is set to arrive tomorrow...I am hoping that puts me in download mode, if not it looks like I am buying a SG2. Anyone else have any ideas that I could throw a this thing other than what I already did? I mean I even tried different versions of Odin and Odin wont even recognize it.

The phone-pc-triangle is not a hard brick.
1. Use adam outler's one click unbrick. For this, i have to ask if your COMPUTER (not necessarily) even sees the device.
2. or it is jig time. If you cannot wait, and can access radio shack, make this simple jig http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889128. There are lots like this.......I know, because this home made one worked just fine for me.
Remember, for some reason the second time around the exact same 'jig" - previously used - did not work, so it looks like a one time shot ??
good luck !

I wish I had the PHONE /!\ PC screen ... I have had that many times, but this is my first completely unresponsive issue. My phone is a build 1006, so I know its from June of 2010.
I am having a heck of a time trying to install java in ubuntu, i think I am going to just chuck this cappy out of the window. I have the program downloaded in ubuntu, but it needs java to run, am I correct?

Ubuntu comes with open something jre. Use that. Right click and open as java
Ah, I used a Live CD to install my copy of Ubuntu, it looks like i didnt install that tool when I installed the OS. I am looking through the software installer within Ubuntu to see where I can find that.
Edit: I did finally get it to run, unfortunately the Unbrickable software says, Failed to find Device. So it looks like I need to ship this thing out for some mods.
Well, I got my Jig....My cappy is dead...The jig did not do anything, I knew it was a slight chance that it would work.
Who can fix this phone in a hard brick state that its in??
Hard Brick Samsung Gravity Smart
Guy i wanted to know can i use the jig usb to unbrick my hard bricked samsung gravity smart the button combinations doesnt work please help me unbricks it i will by the ji if it can unbrick it.
Hello, peeps!
So I was when starting an application, my phone doesn't respond. Tried the power button and it didn't work so I removed the battery and placed it back in.
Here's when my nightmare starts. My phone is stuck at the "GT-N7000" screen, and I cannot proceed further. I'm unable to start Recovery Mode (Vol Up + Power + Home), and only Download Mode works.
However, I tried flashing stock roms, Odin showed no progress even after almost 2 hours.
What seems to be the issue? Is it a hard brick?
Questions should be in the Q&A section.
Is odin able to detect the phone.. ( the port square in odin turns yellow/blue?).
check if there are any Kies processes running in the task manager.. kill them, restart odin and restart phone in download mode and try again.

stuck at the NAND Write part, and the progress bar shows no progress at all (the green bar thing). Could this mean hard brick?
do you have warranty? If yes, take it to Samsung and tell them to rectify it. If no warranty then, you will need to get into recovery may be by flashing a kernel using odin.

Wow...thank you for such quick replies!!
Nope, no longer in warranty..Can I have a link to the kernel file?
Thank you so much!
Before you go about this.. try a reboot PC, reboot download mode phone. try a original USB cable and main USB port of pc and flash again,
If above still stops at NAND
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
look for a tar.md5 file which is odin flashable. If you remember the build number of you phone, then pick that else get any JB kernel and flash using odin. check if odin gives a pass.

I've flashed it, unfortunately it's stuck at NAND (kernel flash). Are there any alternatives?
Thanks!

Sorry for double posting, here's the screenshot..
you dont need to select it everywhere... just the PDA ONLY.
1. download http://d-h.st/FVh.. this is a PIT file.. select it in the PIT partition. Check it and also repartition.
2. select the kernel file in the PDA..
3. press start... (you will need to reboot into download mode every time to start flashing. so remove the battery.. reboot into download mode.. (vol down+home+power)... after you get the screen volume up to continue.. once the screen shows DOWNLOADING, then connect to pc .. open odin
Thanks again!
How long does it normally take for the entire process to complete? The progress bar of "Set Partition" isn't moving at all
There seems to be some issue with the USB Port or Cable or PC.. you need to check ...a full flash of rom takes about 5-10 mins.
use only the back usb port, don't use the front or extension usb ports, they often throw up problems.. good luck
elprix and
I tried everything suggested, but the progress bar doesn't even move
What are the symptoms of hard brick btw?
EDIT : I tried with Odin3 V3.09, and it is stated Re-Partition failed.
EDIT2 : Tried multiple files, progress bar not moving at all.
It don't write to NAND. But it still is able to set partition. Have you tried a different pc? Uninstall Kies completely and then again install Samsung usb drivers.

Hi everyone!
I experience a similar problem as the original poster! Yesterday my phone was fine, but then it rebooted and got stuck. Now I can only get in to "Download mode". There it says:
Odin Mode
Product Name: GT-N7000
Custom binary download: No
Current binary: Samsung Official
I've had it running Paranoid Android successfully for months and then this happened! So where do I go from here,,,? I have Odin downloaded, drivers installed, so what should I try to flash and in what order?
I would be thankful for any help - feel a bit handicapped without a phone!
