Been waiting forever for an official gingerbread release for my P1000 (UK unlocked version) but for now Froyo works fine except that Skype can not use the front facing camera.
Is there a modified Skype apk allowing the front camera to work on this Tab P1000 running Android 2.2?
I'm sure I'm not the only one looking for this (just a shame I can't find any threads that may be addressing this issue)
Only gingerbread can do this. (>2.3.4)
Sounds like we should sue samsung for false advertising. They do say the front facing camera is 'ideal for video chat'. Just saying ...

I have a Vibrant and my mom has an Aria. Tried to Fring Video Call her and, on my end, it said she had no video input but my video was shown and on her end, she saw the cartoon image in my place.
Any ideas on why this isn't working?

Aria does not have a front-facing camera. When you start Fring, it warns you to that fact, and asks whether you want to use video or not. If not, it disables video altogether, if yes, then it uses the outward facing camera. (The video will work, but will be practically useless -- to let the other party see you, you'd have to turn the phone around and point the main camera at yourself, which means that you don't see the screen and YOU won't be seeing the other party.)
Looks like your Mom selected "no" when Fring asked her that question.

I get how it works... But I never had that prompt on my Vibrant. Is it in the settings for her to change?
That would stump me too, because as far as I know Vibrant does not have a front-facing camera either...
It has nothing to do with having a front facing camera. It just has to do with having A camera. Fring doesn't require a front facing camera. It isn't AS cool, but is still semi-cool to do the video chat with the rear cam.
Its Didnt Prompt you because its sa Galaxy S Phone, and The orginal Galaxy S Has Afront Facing Camera so it thinks your on a Galaxy S or Epic 4G it has no way of Knowing that your Model of Galaxy S Dosent Have A Front Camera it Just knows you have a Galaxy S

So what about on my mom's Aria? How do I make it use the rear cam and how do I get hers to view mine?
Just open settings in fring and enable video calls

Hey guys..
So I was silly enough to install the captivate camera software over the stock camera software on my bell sgs i9000m (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751031).
What this means though is that now I don't have the ability to take photos with the front-facing camera. If I try to switch back to the stock camera software provided in the thread above it switches the camera software to the TMOBILE version of the vibrant which also doesnt have the ability to shoot with the FFC.
I'm wondering if any of you guys could package up the stock camera software on your bell i9000m and attach it to this thread so that I can revert back to it.. please?
Let me know if there's anything I can do!
a friend of mine has a milestone and wants to use skype with videocall! I've read that videocall with skype is only available for some phones!
what do you use for videocalling over the internet or is there a way for making skype do that? perhaps make skype think you have an iphone, just joking!
thanks!
The Milestone does not have a front-facing camera so videochatting is not possible. But I've heard that it uses the regular camera as well, but then you have the screen of your Milestone on the table so it kind of defeats the purpose.
Even being able to receive video would be a good first start.
ok! thanks guys!
I just took a quick look at his milestone and I thot I saw a front facing camera, but I might have seen some sensor...
[Q] Google maps compass not working & mic quality bad during calls [not over wifi]
Hi,
I am running on ICS 4.0.3 milestone build by AOKP for cappy, Kernel by glitch v14 b5, but the compass which is used in google maps is not working, i'm just getting a blue dot (something like what you get in apple phones)
I've tried different ROMS but there isn't any change. Although the GPS is accurate, the compass feature exactly pointed out to which direction the phone pointed out which helped in find locations while travelling, now without this feature it kinda feels lame using google maps..
Anybody got a solution to this problem and how?
another problem that was seen was the while calling or receiving calls the person at the other end of the line was not able to hear my voice clearly and when I checked the voice was muffled, I installed vodoo sound from google play and changed the mic sensitivity, its better but still not crisp as before.
Funny thing is that the mic seems to be working fine with google talk and skype when I use them over wifi!!!
Anybody else facing the same issue and found solutions?
For your sound quality issue, it definitely sounds like you need to flash a different modem. Make sure you are using a i9000 based modem

Hey thanks, did that after much fuss.. did a clean install, but this time used the devil kernel instead of glitch, the one that was for cappy and not just i9000. Everything's working perfectly fine now!
For the compass Issue, well i got it solved by removing the maps apk and installing an older version, somewhere around 5.8 i think, rebooted opened application and it updated it automatically via the play store and is working fine.
Otherwise another option is doing a clean install ! with the right kernel.
Hello,
I have JB retail brazil installed in my phone, and have a problems with Tango calls and skype calls. When i make video calls, the front cam makes an excessive zoom and the other person can only see my eyes and my nose, i have to back up a meter so then can see my face. I see no one min this forum has the same problem as me, what can i do. I tried changing to other JB firmwares but with the European version I have the same problem with video calls and even lost my 3g network. I have changed to ICS and back to JB a lot of times. Can some one help me please??
I have the same issue
Hi, I have the same issue with videocalls on Razr i. But, when I'm using the camera software with front facing camera, the video is ok, with a good distance. I`m using the stock ROM from Motorola and the problem affects Skype and Hangouts.
Still

After some months and instaling several stock JB roms, i haven't been able to solve this. Do you have a development motorola razr i, I mean the development previous version before motorola released the final. where did you buy your phone (country)? what ROM is installed?
Same problem
Hi Guys,
I have the same problem with the same apps. I have a Razr i with original JB ROM from Motorola.
I try to find something on the web but untill now I didn't find anything to help.
I have the same problem with both Skype and Google Hangouts. I need to check out some other 3rd party camera apps to see if they have the same issue - or if it's just video.
Problems also on Tango
I've tested on Tango and it presented a "big zoom" as Skype and Hangouts.
It is a problem thats comes from the "conector" used by these apps. The stock camera doesn't show the same problem, mybe because it uses "another" way to access the camera hardware.
In order to test this, I installed Vignette and it doesn't show the problem.
So, there are at least 2 way to access the front facing camera, and the way that video chating apps uses shows the problem about de the zoomed video.
Does any one know something about a patch, an app, or did other tests to localize the origin of the issue?
Same Issue
No update to this thread? I tried a few ROMs; have the same issue as described above in Skype and Hangouts, camera app is fine, no zoom.
I had this problem and it used to happen while I was in the middle of the call. I solved it by going to /system/data/data/com.skype.../files/app.properties and changing this line [device.video.preview.zoom=true] to [device.video.preview.zoom=false] and then it stopped zooming right straight to my face
