[Q] HELP - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright so a while back I rooted and flashed a rom to bring me to 2.3 which was unofficial. Now I'm getting sick of it and want to go back to the official route by using kies to upgrade and that. When I plug mine into kies it says unsupported device. So I'm guessing it doesn't like that I have a flashed rom? So what do I do to be able to go to the official 2.2.1 captivate from the unofficial 2.3.1

Its easier if you don't. You need a official rom like JF6 or KB1. Problem is not all devs are from the US or use ATT, so their device ID's are different. So you need to break hexcode editor to try to fix it. To be honest it isn't worth it, Kies is just ODIN with a different UI and a TON of unnecessary checks that 99.9% of the are useless and make it autofail.

Want to revert back to official Software, what do I need to do?

Want to revert back to official Galaxy S i900 Software, what do I need to do? I'm running the JPH Beta version with Ryanz lagfix. Do I need to undo the lagfix and root before I precede? Will I need to flash the stock version with Odin?
before you do anything, you need to first UNDO the lag fix
go to Ryzaas topic to learn how
once you get that out of the way, you can flash back to stock firmware
but first you need to download the correct firmware you want to use, and the correct pit file, it could be 512 or 513 or 800 something....
Before you downgrade from Froyo, be aware some people apparently had serious issues doing so on JPC.. My recommendation is to stick to Froyo from now on, and upgrade to final Froyo when released

I see. But when final Froyo comes out will I be able to upgrade through Kies? An if yes, will I have to unroot and un-Lagfix my phone?
The reason I upgraded to Beta Froyo is I let Kies upgrade my phone software and it almost bricked my phone. At the time I was running the official software but rooted and with lagfix.
So how do you go back to official then? all i get told by kies is that im at the latest version (XXJPK)

[Q] Software Updates?

Hi,
I was playing with ROM flashing and the like and I decided to go back to stock, so I did using the ODIN flash to JF6. However, it seems that I have trouble getting the JF7 update over the air to work. Any ideas?
Thanks
I'm a Noob, but you might try Kies - It should detect a newer version available and let you update that way. Much more reliable in any case if you ask me.
You can do search flashing to stock JH7 that should help you. If no one else has sent you a link by the time I get to my computer I'll send you a link I think it will be flashing 1010 build or something like that.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I've had more problems with kies than anything else, try the samsung website to update.
I see you was wanting JF7, I don't know what the difference is but this will get you back to stock JH7 Eclair.

I tried it, it works.
Well I want JH7, but I also want to be able to get the official Froyo when or if it comes out.

Like stated above.... flash using kies mini.... then you'll be ready for official AT&T froyo.
Alright thanks for all your help, Mini Kies did the trick.

[Q][HELP] Galaxy s GT-I9000 Issues with Upgrading firmware. please help

Ok so i would like to update my galaxy to 2.3 gingerbread official using keis.
I live in Australia and based on what i have read the update should be out on my model of galaxy. When i plug my phone into keis it is saying i have the latest firmware. I have done some reading up on this and if i am correct some of the hacks and things i have done to my phone could cause it not to be able to update and i would like to know if this is true and how i can fix this.
Things i have done:
- I am currently running 2.2 froyo
- I have voodoo lagfix and soundfix installed.
- I used sgs tools from market to use the optus apps which came with my phone that where unusable since i was with virgin.
- I applied a 3 button fix i found as well so i could update voodoo easier. But in the end i just used Odin.
One thing i read was that i have to restore the system apps to update it. which i have done with all accept one but the .apk backup for it is not working so i cannot. Will i have to use Odin and revert back to the original firmware and start again? Or is there something i can do from here?
Short answer- You can't.
Gingerbread isn't out officially anywhere at present (there was a brief period where it was out on Kies for Scandinavia- hence all the semi-official "leaked" roms).
On past performance we're likely to be waiting a fair while here in Oz- once Official GB Roms come out from Samsung you then have to wait for all the local carriers to add their garbage to it (and - according to them- "test" it) before it gets released on kies. I'd bite the bullet and just grab a nice rom from here.
Remember if you do decide to wait for the official update, you will have to downgrade to stock for kies to recognise your right to an upgrade.
+ 120 to that NO upgrade to 2.3.3 YET .
All upgrades are unofficial .When Kies has your upgrade it upgrades
Then before update undo lagfix .
Or to be really safe reinstall your original saved rom the one you saved before you started messing with the phone .

I think using odin to flash a stock rom back before updating by kies would be safe way

Depends Kies does not recognize stock rom as product code etc dont match = no update through Kies . Stock is not network supplied firmware as original .

[Q] Galaxy S I9000 Official Roms

Hi guys, i'm looking for the official rom for Samsung galaxy S I9000, my carriere is Bell Canada, I don't really care what version it is I'm gonna update it to the latest version using Kies.
You can download from samfirmware
I have been looking for a rom and a tutorial for 4 hour, tried 2 but kies keep telling me that my phone can`t b upgraded by kies. If anyone has a working tutorial For SGS I9000 (Bell CA) please tell me

Before any rom upgrade (out of kies) you must be operator free... Well, that's what I understood when I first flashed my SGS1.
You shouldn't stick with stock roms (my opinion), custom roms, in my experience ( which it's not much ahah) are always better because it's made by costumers that want their phone with their full power without restritions. Well, at first I was like you, a bit apreensive, now I have Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.3) and I dont want to go back! Its awsome. But you should read a bit more about everything.
Try reinstall kies, maybe there is a new version or your phone is in the latest firmware...

I think better you try to use Odin rather than using Kies to flash the rom.it more user friendly and straight forward.
The only official gingerbread version for Bell Canada is UGKG3 (2.3.3) that came out in the summer of 2011.
If Kies says your phone can't be updated, you must have quite an old version of Android installed.
Well i am with ICS 4.0.3 but i really wanted to go back with official roms to get update via kies to try something with Bell TV, but that just optional, i tried some roms, but kies was not detecting em. so i went back to ICS (but it's really unstable imo)

Since you've already gone to ICS, you may as well just download the UGKG3 ROM and flash that with Odin and forget about Kies.
If you want Kies to get you to a Bell ROM, you'd have to go back to Bell's Froyo release (again using Odin) and then let Kies update that to UGKG3.

i9000M Soft keys not working after fw update

So I was trying to root my i9000m and I read a forum post that advised me to update the soft key fw before doing so... little did I know I was on a custom fw already so it broke my soft key functionality. I've read a few posts that have instructions to fix the problem, by rooting the stock fw for the model and updating soft key fw before rooting again. problem is my phone was originally on FROYO and I can't locate the original file anywhere. can anybody point me to a file dl for the stock fw, or maybe someone has the file on their computer they would be willing to share? it's a bit frustrating not having the keys to go back, and i can't use certain apps due to not having a menu key..
If you don't find what you are looking for, try updating to a custom ROM that includes a Navigation Bar, as shown in the attached pic.
What's the ROM in the screenshot?
It's SlimBean 3.1 = Jelly Bean 4.1.2
With this ROM you can have up to 5 soft keys in the Navigation Bar.
This way you could care less about the phone's soft keys.
There are sites such as this one where you can find official Samsung roms
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&model=GT-I9000M&pcode=0&os=1&type=1#firmware
If you did manage to root your phone, you could also try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832638
Thanks nyloncrack, I didn't know that there were roms that included a nav bar! I will try that, and Marshian I've gotten the firmwares from sammobile but apparently my original firmware for the i9000m (Canada) was 2.2.1, which I have found, but apparently not found the proper version of the rom that came stock with my phone. I believe it was 2.2.1 froyo. I am currently running 2.2.1 froyo.xwjsd which seems to not be the correct version.
There's a thread here with a couple of roms for the I9000m, other than that I'm afraid I can't really be of any use to you. Good luck though!

I got the jl2 rom and reflashed and it worked! I downloaded UGJL2/UGJL2/BMCJL2/Sbl (MultiCSC): reflashed with pda, phone, and csc checked and then updated the touchkey firmware and voila! I got them from the same link you posted, just before you posted it, bang on Marshian!
It was actually really simple once I wrapped my head around it, now I just need to update to a newer, faster custom rom! now let's see if I can't get this rooted and unlocked again without messing it up . any suggestions for a good, bug free rom? I haven't looked into it too much yet but i hear ice cream sandwich and jellybean are recommended for my device?

Good to hear!
I've got the I9001 so I don't really know what kind of roms are available for you, but in my experience for my own phone ICS is currently the best trade-off in features and stability. JB is still quite new and not fully ported yet, while ICS is nearly bug-free. It could be different for your model, that's just my two cents. Either way, as long as you don't brick your phone you could always try out a couple of roms and see what you like best. The only downside is changing a major version requires a full wipe.
I used this to go from gb to ics.
[HOWTO] Flashing CWRecovery to i9000m & upgrade to ICS AOSP 4.x ROM from any version
This way your i9000m becomes a i9000 for searching out new ROMs.
For whichever ROMs (ICS or JB) you'll always need to flash the KG3 modem.

I've tried using that guide before but the JVP link is invalid. i did a quick google search am i just looking for Gingerbread? because I have a file already on my computer titled "CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVP-v3.7-CWM3RFS.tar"
Yes, that will work.
Looking at my notes from back then I actually also used:
CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVT-v4.3-CWM3RFS, and
CF-Root-XX-_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS
They were just later versions of GB.
JVU was Samsung's appeasement to i9000 users when they were told ICS wasn't coming. Had a couple of ICS features; window dressing.
Remember to make a full backup before touching anything this time
I've been trying for hours but I cannot for the life of me get windows to recognize the device in download mode. It was working fine until i updated the rom, then intermittently, then i updated the rom again and it has stopped working. i've uninstalled the drivers, tried with debugging on and off, restarted windows, installed the newest version of kies, bought a new usb cable, to no avail. this is maddening. is there a better alternative to do this on my mac? I'm using a virtual system running windows but I'm positive that isn't the problem, since it was working great before on vmware, and parallels. any ideas? I'm about a half hour away from selling this device and going back to the iphone haha.
so basically my question now is how do I downgrade back to the original firmware, so I can put this nightmare behind me? I had it unlocked and rooted on gingerbread before... don't ask me how it took many many hours. now the device isn't even being recognized in kies. If I don't get this figured out soon i'm flipping this b*tch for an iphone 4, because I do appreciate the one touch jb/unlock. I've literally wasted days of my life trying to figure this out and it doesn't seem to be getting me anywhere. too bad because I really appreciate the android system and all its capabilities but I don't have the time to waste on stuff like this
Another Edit! So, after fussing and fiddling, I decided to try one more time, I swear, I was actually going to give up at this point if it hadn't worked. so basically I removed kies, loaded the driver i was using, which was 1.3.450.0 and it didn't work, so I loaded 1.5.5.0 and it connected! My guess is that after updating the rom the driver was outdated, but I figured kies would give me the most up to date driver, seems it didn't oh well, I'm almost afraid to load ics since I've worked so hard and wasted so much time up to this point, but i've come this far...
one more edit, the kg3 modem kept crashing odin on me so I had to stick with the jl2 that was flashed earlier.. which doesn't give me network access, I'll try to find another file but is there any reason odin should be crashing like that due to this particular file?
hahaha, shouldn't speak too soon, jl2 works after reboot, should I update my modem firmware now, and what is recommended for my system {2.3.4} kernel {2.6.35.7} and if i flash to ics will I need kg3? Thanks for all the help with this seemingly never ending process
