Hey Folks, I am a noob and stuck. I just got wifey the Dell Streak 7 on black friday special and being that its running Honeycomb, there is no USB driver. I called "Dell" which was a joke and after talking to several people I was told that the drivers wont be out there for several weeks.. (WTF).. I have gone through most of the forums for info but stuck.
I have a laptop running Vista, and my work computer that is running XP and need direction as too what I need to download to get the show on the road. I just want a way for me to access the tablet or SDcard through the USB cord.
I keep seeing references to ADB, and laslow site but those posts are referencing to those running Windows 7, or am I wrong. Any and all help for this lost noob would be gr8.

Ok if you bought it new with Honeycomb on it then you bought the wifi version I assume. Anyway, all Honeycomb devices switched protocols, they are no longer USB Mass Storage devices, they are recognized and media players, so you should see a Portable Media Devide under My Computer if you have the latest version of Windows Media Player on your laptop...
OK, THAT being said, in my personal opinion it's the worst decision Google could've ever made. SO what I do is install a little app called Samba File Sharing, which allows you to connect to the 7 as a network device and have access to it's SD contents just like any other device connect to your computer.
Hope this helps. You have to set up a few parameters like network name and workgroup and such but it only takes about 1 minute and well worth the trouble

Thank you for that tip.
Some devices require MTP, the s7 in this case isnt one of them. The s10 is though.
It's up to the rom maker to decide which one to use to use either MTP or USBMSD, depending on how the internal memory is organized.
Regardless MTP allows you to simultaniously access the device on a pc while using it on the device itself. With USBMSD you can only use it on one or the other.
The S10 has /sdcard as a symlink to /data/media, so you simply cant mount it or you'd unmount the entire /data partition (which would be very bad). The galaxy nexus is the same way, hence it requiring MTP mode.
The S7 has /sdcard as a seperate partition, I'm guessing mainly for the ability to simultaniously access it.
Fastboot+ADB.zip has every driver for every dell device.

Just got a G1 off of evilbay.
When I connect it to the PC with the usb lead XP says 'device not recognised'.
Any idea whats going wrong and how to fix it?
which winxp version are you using? i never managed to connect my g1 to xp64...
you might need to manually install the usb drivers which come with the android sdk
XP32, SP3.
Got a link for the drivers?
That's a GOOD thing.... protect a good phone from a HORRIBLE virus.
Try linux. No weird drivers needed and no risk of damage.
Can't go on to linux full time, it doesn't support the games I play.
And the XP emulators are not a solution either, unless they have finally started to support 3D graphics?
If that is the only solution maybe I should have gone for a blackberry after all.
Will it work with the Ubuntu live CD?
Or the run from USB drive under XP version?
Make sure you have a good, thick USB cable. My G1 doesn't want to work with the first two USB cables I tried.
That was the first thing I thought of
Tried all 7 of mine, all react the same.
Also tried the project machine, initially found it, then after about 10 seconds came up with the unrecognised device
Are you trying to mount the SD card or use adb/fastboot?
Am trying to get to the SD card.
Found my microSD card reader so can copy stuff over that way now.
Would be nice to connect properly tho.
It's away for a week now, being fixed and rooted
It is my humble opinion that my local phone guy is a genius (and well into android).

Livecd is fine.
Dualboot is better.
Clear the virus is best.

I recently got the new LG Optimus 2X and im having some real headache over it..
The thing is that it refuses to mount its sdcard on my macbook (10.6.6).
I tryed pretty much everything short of injecting valium, but it simply will not comply.
So could anyone please help me before my hair turns gray and falls off?
It pops up on win xp, both on a pc and in a vmware xp system on the mac, so i assume that its not using the default mass storage system anymore, some google searches hints that its using a semi-proprietary system similar to some mp3- and media-players.
So far ive been using my old phone as SD card adapter, and i also have a wifi network (rarely used, using mobile internet on a usb dongle) for ftp transfers.
But that aint enough, i need to be able to transfer audio/video files aswell as games/apps and backups to/from my phone in a easier fasion than adb push or ftp.
i really like the phone but im concidering returning it and buy a mac compatible phone instead.. but there are no other tegra phones available atm...
Does it use MTP? If so, check out http://www.wentnet.com/projects/xnjb/
I have a Tegra powered tablet (Advent Vega) and my MacBook Pro sees the sd card when mounted no problem.
You could also look at a program called Syncmate. Mac client and free Android version
XNJB is a no-go.. Will not detect a device.
Googlesearch mac with optimus x2 only reveals mac address related links or sites containing the words in different topic lists.
syncmate is a internet-solution, nothing gets synced locally..
And that is simply not an option when i want to transfer +1gb files (at the best of times i reach about 150k/s, usually around 10-30k/s)
Seems to work fine on my MacBook Pro.. no problem at all!
I have some trouble with the phone not detecting the second SD card, solution for me was to uncheck "USB Debugging" while it was plugged in.
Or
Plugout
Disable USB-Debugging
Plug in
Dangerous one: (This might damage current content on your SD-Card, i take no responsability)
While Phone is live
Plug out the SD
Phone goes belly up about it
Says it might be damaged and needs to be reformated
let the phone reformat the SD-Card
Plug the phone back in the Mac
Poof SDcard once again viewable
^^ Above is not recommended, and i can not explain why it worked. also i do not know if it might damage other components of the phone. But mine looks to be just fine and the SD-Card is performing as intended.
Why it is so hard for the Computers to see the external SD is a good Question, i have had the same issues with my windows 7 PC .. USB debugging seemed to be the fix initially.

On the Optimus 2X you need to activate yourself the USB Mass Storage mode, Go on Applications -> Settings -> SD Card & Phone Storage -> Mass storage only
Desmopro, i already tryed that.
The mass storage setting disables the adb debug tho.
My computer can see the device in system profiler, a hardware list,
And adb devices lists it aswell, but disk utility can't see any connected storage,
mounted or otherwise.

What version of OSX you use ?
In terminal, can you see the device (on /dev) ?
Think to reinstall a combo update, to clean up your system
If you use 10.7 beta and you are a developper or a beta tester, send a report to Apple
If you use 10.7 beta found on bittorrent, downgrade to 10.6
The Optimus 2X dont use MTP but the old mass storage method, so there is normally no problem to use OSX with
Im using 10.6.6.
Its strange, my htc hero mounts just fine, without any hazzle or inconvenience, but the optimus will not show..
I finally did find the issue tho, as soon as i eject the external sd-card (remove it physically), the internal storage pops up without a hickup.
But as soon as i insert the sd card, the mounted card stops responding, folders wont refresh, file copy stops and the only option is to eject the media from finder.
So regardless of what i try, i cannot get the external card mounted on my mac, even tho it works fine on pc.
..ive been using my sd card from my hero from the moment i got the phone..
I am not sure when this started. I have used windows to install cymod several times but i went to download a update and install it and my computer will not recognize the touchpad. it says the device driver was not installed properly
i have tried on two different units.

it goes through the steps of looking for the device and then nothing.
i get a tone on the touchpad and then nothing on the computer

It sounds like driver problem to me. Search for HP touchpad driver and download and install the latest version you find, that should do it.. I'm assuming you have the MTP box checked in storage > settings > USB computer connection. Also, reboot both the tablet and the computer after installing the new driver.
Good luck.
I have two different devices one only has web os and the other has android.
on the android I have the MTp checked and have accessed it in the past but i upgraded to windows 8
that being said i had the same issue with windows 7 i just thought a fresh install would fix the issue and it has not
I have downloaded what i thought was teh latest drivers.
I have installed novacom
and rebooted my system.
and I get the same error message Windows does not recognize the device.
i get the connected tone on my computer but I don't get any response on the touchpads
did you put the tablet in usb mode?

Try using a different USB lead and plugging into different USB sockets on your PC sometimes I find my PC will recognize it with one socket but not another same thing occasionally happens with my USB sticks. Otherwise I would suggest trying a different PC if you still have a problem that would suggest a fault with the USB socket on your touchpad which I have had to have replaced once.
Fingers crossed that isn't your problem.

This will let TP be recognized on the PC
"If you want to transfer files back and forth from the CM9 touchpad you might have difficulty figuring out how exactly to do it.Here's how you pull it off:
First, tap on your app drawer in the top right of the screen (the little checkerboard). Now, select the "settings" icon.
Now tap on storage on the left-hand pane.
Finally, the tricky part - tap on the 3 squares at the VERY top right of your screen. It will bring down a little drop-down menu for USB computer connection. Tap it and put a checkmark in the "Media Device MTP" box.
Now you can plug your touchpad into the computer at will and transfer files back and forth from it. Easy as pie, I'm not sure why this isn't activated by default, but it's a simple fix if you know what to do."
Sorry I copied this from XDA a couple of weeks ago, so I can not take credit for this but it works great
that is already done on my android, and the touch-pad should auto connect. but neither are it says device not recognized

Novacom shouldn't make a difference, I have just installed windows 8 on my laptop and haven't installed anything yet , just plugged in the Touchpad and it was recognized straight away
Sounds like either windows is messed up or the USB connector of the Touchpad has gone .
same error on TP + his galaxy??
dam the luck..busted ports on both devices at the same time..
right after a fresh format of windows ; what a coinkadink
if on your very longest shot that win needs new drivers, the palm / novacom etc
process installs them and TP will get recognized and picked up..
he said he does not know how to root his TP to put into usb mode..
i know from recent experience that even when android is in mtp mode, my PC would not connect play w/ it until i had new drivers..
same experience w/ my new nexus 7 during the process of rooting it..

Ok lets get a few things right
I do know how to root my device I did it a while ago and honestly haven't done it in a while so I am rusty
but that being said if you cant access the device at all even in usb mode then you cant root.
And yes now my galaxy s3 wont recognize either.
every time i try it tells me that there was a device error and windows doesn't recognize the device.
i formatted the cpu again and put windows 7 and no help
I have tried two diffrent touchpads one android and one web os
and my phone
to get things right you have to start at the beginning. Windows will not recognize TP w/o the drivers first. It's obvious you have been avoiding that step. you need to go back and do the whole nova com thing to install them before you attach TP to it.. look at the you tube videos. you will be finished in a few minutes. .
Hi guys sorry for stupid question. I have preordered HTC One and coming from SGS3 where samsung didnt offered native UMS mode for file transfer and I had to install stupid 3rd party apk as I cannot install anything on my work station so MTP and PTP didnt work. So the question is, does HTC One have native USB mass storage support for file transfer aka flash drive?
THX
No. By the way what 3rd party app did you use to enable UMS? It might come in handy to HTC One upcoming/users.
are you kid*ing? Again another phone for 600Euro without UMS? Is it JellyBean related?
BTW: I have been using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711009 but only for microSD card, so it wont help with internal I suppose...
yes, it is jelly bean related.
UMS went out with ICS and all android devices use MTP as standard.
What OS are you running that it doesn't support MTP? Even my mums years old xp computer supports MTP as long as Windows Media Player is up to date....
Some corporate XPs (at work), so even they support MTP, after SGS3 connected some exclamation (cant remember what exactly) pop up because of restricted administrator rights (winXP wanted to install some drivers) and I only saw folders with unidentified files so totaly useles. But at home win 7 it worked. Only UMS fully work at my work computer. And thats very important to me...
Since JB there is only MTP, no Mass Storage.
But u can easily workaround with USB-Host OTG

Hey all,
Is this possible with the Droid Turbo?
I'm used to plugging my phones in via USB, and having the file system mount as a mass storage device, allowing me to move files to and from my phone easily.
When I plug in the Droid Turbo, I have two choices, either MTP, which just brings up an installer of some sort, or camera mode, which only allows me access to pictures and videos.
Now granted, all of my past Android phones have been running third party images (mostly Cyanogenmod) and maybe this is the reason for the difference (though I thought I had file system access with stock image in the past, but maybe I am misremembering)
Any thoughts on anything I can do to get complete file system access?
Works for me. ES file manager does too.

I have file system access from the phone using ES no problem, and can mount usb storage using one of those adapters.
I'm talking about access to the phones file system from the computer using USB.
Worked perfectly on my old phone, doesn't with the Turbo.
OIC, not that I know of.
Sounds like it might be a driver issue. I plugged my phone into my computer (Windows 7) shortly after I got home with the turbo and moved a bunch of backed up files onto the turbo without any issues at all.

I know. Never understood the need for specialized drivers when they could just mount as a standard USB Mass Srorage device and be compatible with everything out of the box
But I guess that would just make too much sense...

Same Problem Here...
I had the same issue when plugging my Droid Turbo into my Windows 7 machine. I'm afraid I don't have any advice for those of you on Linux, but if you have problems on windows where it's only showing you something about "Motorola Device Manager", here are the steps I took that fixed the problem for me:
On Windows 7 go to Start Menu > Devices and Printers. Under Devices you should see XT1254. Right click on this and select Troubleshoot. If the issue you are experiencing is like mine, then the problem was simply that the drivers didn't auto-install when the Droid was first connected to your PC and the troubleshooter should install them properly for you.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the cause is that Moto Device Manager software. When you first attach the phone via USB the computer treats it as an install disc rather than as a storage device. Perhaps those of you on linux might be having a similar issue, I hope this helps and I apologize if it doesn't.
My wife just purchased a Turbo. I can not get the storage to mount on Ubuntu. This is the only phone that I don't have access to the storage. I do have access to the PMP. I am also receiving an "no permissions" when using adb. I search for adb devices, and no permissions? I have developer options enabled, USB debugging checked. I just tried 2 other phones with adb, all functions?
To clear up some things:
Different OSes treat MTP differently. Windows gives access to the storage area, OS X requires Android File Transfer App, and GNU/Linux I have no idea.

mattlach: It makes perfect sense why they do not use USB Mass Storage. Mass storage requires exclusivity to the OS, and that means the phone cannot use it. Which means, the phone crashes because the OS resides on the NAND you would want to mount and read. MTP is the compromise. Phone in the past that had access as mass storage had SD cards as well, either internally or added on. For example, the old school Droid Incredible had both an internal sd card and an external slot.
Probably already answered but yes you can. Just gotto my computer as yyou'd lookfor a uUSB device. And sorry aboutmiss sspells. Swift key sucks so much...... Omfg.
Looks like they want us to use MTP or PTP. Mass storage is not an option. I found this from Verizon:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-117349/
"USB Mass Storage feature is currently not available, however, files can be transferred to/from a computer utilizing Media Transfer Protocol (MTP)"
Not to jack the thread, but when using Windows Explorer to access my turbo, almost all of the folders (music, pictures, dcim, etc.) show up as files. Anyone else have this issue?
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Free mobile app

Well, Windows 7 doesn't solve the problem. The main reason I didn't switch to an iPhone from Android was lack of access to the file system. There are other things on my phone I would like to transfer or backup to my PC besides the media that appears when connecting the device. I had no idea when I got this new Droid Turbo I would be pushed back into the stone age. No sd card, no removable battery and no access to the file system. Arrgh
And no manual sound off switch that can't be overridden by software.
Hey guys, I know this is an old thread but Google brought it up. haha
I was messing with this and I turned off the "Software Installation" option and all of the sudden drivers installed and everything seems to be working. I guess the software installer was overriding the normal driver installation or something.
Not sure it's a universal fix but maybe it'll help someone.
