On a related note, has anyone seen a true LTE coverage map? According to the street level coverage maps, I live & work 8-10 miles inside the boundry of the LTE network, yet I can only connect with HSDPA. Not only that, but AT&T was tricky. The color indicating LTE is very close to the color indicating HSDPA. I had to view the map on a laptop, and view the screen at an extreme angle to tell the difference.
Actually I don't live in lte area. That's what att data map says but still get lte.

The only LTE maps they have right now are the ones on att.com/4g. The LTE is bright blue compared the hspa which is dark blue

Everyone should install Sensorly app and drive around with it on so that we can map everywhere AT&T LTE coverage extends. If you look at the map I've mapped where I drive to work from Winter Springs to downtown via 417 to 408. Let's fill in the holes. Later you can uninstall Sensorly since it does consume battery. Or you can keep it installed later and just turn off the passive scanning in the app's settings.
We don't need AT&T for map data. With Sensorly we can make our own colective coverage map.

I have cognition rom and instead of having 3g I have this H internet. It sits on 3g for a milla second then switches to H. My buddy with iphone four is getting way higher speed tests than me, why can't I get 3g and get better speeds?

I don't know why but my buddies 3g was consistently hitting 300-350 kbs. The max I was hitting was like 150. We were right next to each other when we were testing this, I guess that the iphone blows the captivate away in 3g reception and speed. Also in the spotty areas he was keeping his 3g and I was dropping down to edge. Kinda disappointed . Had anyone else noticed that the 3g reception isn't that good our is it just my area?

this is why i hate american cell providers, they want you to remain ignorant. it's not your fault but it is funny that people arent familiar with grps, edge, hspa, and hspa+ it is like they are telling you that you are too stupid to understand so you dont need to know.
the cdma providers are the worst. but att should be proud of having hspa, but i think they want to hide the fact that it is not available in all 3g areas. instead they advertise the hspa speeds as there 3g speeds as hspa works on there 3g network. they dont distinguish the two so you think there network is so much faster in so many places
meanwhile verizon advertises the hspa coverage for att as 3g coverage to make att's coverage look smaller. they say they have so much more coverage, if they showed a current 3g map for att instead of the hspa coverage you would not see a big difference at all. also cdma 3g is totally different from what att has and is not a fair comparison in the first place. how can you compare coverage if the speed is not comparable?
Comparing phones side by side with speed test is also not the best way to test which device is faster, especially if they are on the same network. I am annoyed by the input on this device or Id go in depth. Use some google-foo and read on cell phone signaling and theory and youll see what I mean.

I see the H+ symbol on my data speed intermittently in Las Vegas with my International Note. A few minutes, then it's gone, it comes and goes. There was a point at about 4am in the morning where I had it for a good 30 minutes. Can someone explain why that is? I thought the International version is only capable of EDGE on t-mobile. Is there a hack or root that can give me H+ in Southern California?

A friend told me that tmobile is quietly rolling out 1900mhz in select areas. I'm guessing this is why you sometimes get H+ speeds on the note, which doesn't officially get it nationwide on tmobile network. It's good news but it doesn't mean you will have 3g or better speeds everywhere.

several factors could be the cause
If network has fast dormancy and its switched on(default) then the phone will role back to lower speeds until you actively use network again. It is then a feature not a bug.
Could be reception of data network in city theoretically reception could be lost/weakened by buildings, moving or standing still traffic, etc. Anything from cell tower reach to phone to anything obstructing the radio waves.
Could be battery saving app
Could be settings on phone to conserve battery
Could be buggy modem
etc
Given these you can eliminate. If you battery and speed when using network is not adversely reacted then ignore
edit: roaming on other network could also be a cause. Best switch that off(is default off)

This thread is simply voting which data you use and why.
I personally am using 3G (HSPA+ 21) even though I could use 4G (I live in Canada), mainly because of the poor battery like I'm experiencing with this device if used on 4G.
So what are you using? And why?
Using 3G+ (42) because the 4G frequency in Australia doesn't work with the N4, or most phones unless a special model comes out like the 4G version of the S3

3G, no choice, if 4G was an option I'd probably give it a shot but if I noticed extreme battery drain I would go back to 3G as well.

i live in canada too, but i did several tests, using 4g makes the voice call quality really bad. so i stick with 3g now
I use both... I get pretty decent speed on DC-HSPA about 20mbps down easy... I use lte mainly so i can stream youtube in hd instead of hq!

And I don't think the LTE chip works here anyway.
I used Edge at work. it streams better for me. Always has. Since iphone 3g. I think its the building I work in. Soon as I leave it, H+ works like it should.
At home I use Wireless and 4g

Faux G aka HSPA+ (21.1 and 14.4) w/EB here as well.
My Provider has just HSPA+ 15 but I mostly hav HSPA+ 10. But that's no problem at all, because I'm used to it. At home (on Computer) I get just about 7 so I'm totally happy.
3G is broken... Once this thing connects top umts or hspa 10 there's no data transmission until it finds hspa+15 again...

GPRS/EDGE by preference, no point wasting battery power attempting to connect to crappy 3G signal!
3G for me. I've tried 4G and while I like the speeds, my battery takes a considerable hit.
I live in Canada as well. I've only just started using 4G for the past few days (Rogers) and I think I'm going to be sticking with it. Data speeds have improved significantly. I don't seem to have that decrease in voice call quality that someone else mentioned and my battery life is actually not that much worse compared to 3G.
Technically, there is not a network in the US that's adhering to the actual 4G standard. Verizon's LTE may offer slightly better latency, and a better upload speed than T-Mobile, but your wallet will be taking a huge hit, and you'll only have 2GB of data for $110 after taxes and FCC fees. Is LTE really worth more than $100 a month? I don't think so.
I'm using T-Mobile's network and I'm very happy with the speeds. If T-Mobile is prevalent in your area, and you don't travel very often to remote areas, their $30 prepaid plan is definitely worth it. I'm witnessing over 22Mb down on the 42Mbps towers, and I'm averaging roughly 10Mb down everywhere else. I'm about 35 miles from a major urban city, btw.
I pick up LTE by my house when I go to the store, which is about half a mile away. When I'm outside that store, my HTC one shows full bars 4G, my girlfriend's iPhone 5 only shows 3G, when I leave the store I still get full bars until I drive under an overpass, then it just randomly turns to full bars 3G.
That doesn't really make sense, I got excited the first time I spotted 4G in that area, thinking that I should also have it inside my house, since it would be faster than my home internet

I've read several times people saying the bars don't reflect your LTE signal strength but calling signal strength. You could be in the bare minimum fringe of LTE and pick it up and saturated cdma and have full bars and spotty 4g.
Also, the antennas in phones can vary in efficiency and quality. One phone may pick up better than another.

IPhone 5 bars represent data signal.. The One shows 1x voice.. The One does not hold very good 4G in fringe areas. Wait for the area to launch then start to pinpoint the issue.

Sense Roms always show voice signal as bars. You are right. If you install an AOSP Rom on your One the signal bars will be of your data. That's why my wife's old NS4G always seemed liked it had worse signal than my old EVO 3D.

Here is the possible bad news: The HTC One uses the Snapdragon 600 which does not support the 800 band of LTE that Sprint has been deploying. I'm currently in Chicago and I can tell you that the 1900 band in a market that is nearly at 100% is spotty at best. The 800 band will travel farther and get better building penetration. The only way to to use the stronger transition band is to switch to a Snapdragon 800 phone when they come out in Q3.

But I don't think Sprint will do much LTE on 800 for a while. They are still shutting down IDEN through the end of the 2013.

The last day Sprint will be supporting iDEN across the country is June 29th. The 800 band has been testing in Chicago in spots already, especially out in the suburbs. In a market like this where it's the most completed of any NV rollout, the 800 LTE and 800 1x will be live in late Q3.
Check out s4gru.com for all info on LTE deployment for Sprint. There are apps like Sensorly that can show you actual data strength. Your bars do show voice not data strength though, unless you are on a AOSP ROM, they show data strength.

I have heard this 2. Bars and 3g/4g icon have nothing to do with each other. Bars is phone reception, 3g/4g icon is current data connectivity.

True enough, but you need to get the right logcat app, some don't work as well as others. I initially tried aLogCat, but didn't seem to work. CatLog app worked great, however.

Just saying. No one has been able to get a B41 (TDD-LTE 2496-2690) connection with a Nexus 5 and that's with actual maps of Clearwire sites that's been upgraded and knowing where each site is located at. I've personally visited over 24 sites to no avail and know of others that visited many sites as well. Looks to be a much bigger issue than just changing up the LTE Engineering settings and may be network related.
Just got the phone but I'm pretty disappointed with the LTE speeds 1/2mb down, outside it's a bit better. Went downstairs and it disconnects from LTE altogether. Anyone know if it's a radio (hardware) issue with the phone or firmware radio? Some spots of my house won't even catch LTE, whereas my s2 would get wimax.
I've tried spark but it makes my connection more unreliable more pocket loss, but indeed it does seem to make it faster, placebo? I'm in Los Angeles don't know if it's been rolled out. I tried updating prl/profile to no avail. My next choice would be to try the LG 2 in hope of it having a better radio.

No, band 41 has the most capacity so you would want to connect to that if you are actually in range of it. It will automatically drop you down to the lower frequency bands as you move out of range of the higher frequency bands.

When viewing HD youtube videos, it seems to play smoothly for a while, and then pauses as it the speed is going and up and down or being throttled.

I am with uh60james spark seems to offer more throughput and less disconnects.
I drove to Corona from Carson the other day and i was shocked how much coverage sprint has improved on. I wasn't able to stay connected to LTE on my the entirety of my drive but it is impressive how Sprint has extended lte coverage around corona at least on the freeway.
Spark works better for me, less drop offs.
I am in Naperville. Will check this out and see if tri band goes this far out west from chicago.

I haven't heard anything about DFW having Spark anytime soon, so more than likely not. I live in Arlington myself, and would love to see this area Spark-enabled sooner than later.
Enabled this on my n5 a couple weeks ago .... dismal speeds on lte in downtown Los Angeles as usual around 4 down and 2 up.... Yesterday for the first time spark kicked in and I got 44down and 14 up. BUUUUT today its back and slower than ever. around 2 down/1up on LTE

Seems that due to Nexus 5 lacks TD-SCDMA for China Mobile 3G, it is very hard for Nexus 5 auto connect to LTE.
You need *#*#4636#*#*, change mode to "LTE Only" and wait connect to band 41/38 cell and then change it back to "LTE/GSM Auto (PRL)".
After it, you will on LTE until one of following happens: no LTE cell signal; incoming call; make a outgoing call. If fallback to GSM, you will need another round of "LTE Only" settings. Please check some chinese forums, there are plenty of guides.
It seems N5's baseband firmware did not implement some directly GSM to LTE function and do not support China Mobile 3G, so ...
