I have been trying to resolve this issue for a day now. I flashed to 2.2 Froyo, unlocked and rooted my Stock Rogers Samsung Captivate. Everything is working fine, I started downloaded all my favourite apps back when I had stock firmware. A few hours into using my phone, I noticed apps that I used to be able to find weren't showing up. I am not sure if it is related, but I noticed this after removing bloatware with titanium backup.
I installed following this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861103
After searching forums for hours, the solution seemed simple, modifying a line of code in the build.prop file and overwriting the old one. I have tried this one:
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon_wwe/inc/inc/inc:2.2/FRF91/231334:user/release-keys
with no luck. I decided to reflash the 2.2 rom as I assumed removing the bloat ware was the cause, but I am still having the same market issues.
I am not sure where to go from here, did anyone experience similar problems? Any possible solutions? I really want DBZ scouter back

I got the Cognition files and the Odin standalone, but I'm confused as to where to get the other files
• PIT.pit
• PDA.tar
• PHONE.tar
• CSC.tar
I can't find the download link on the thread

Cognition has had this since the first release
Im trying to find the Cognition Odin install but its not on the site, the site only has the ROM files. I would ideally want to install with rom manage as it would be a lot easier but my market is so messed up its not even showing up when i search it.

you dont need to install rom manager
put the update.zip on your sdcard and reboot to recovery....
reinstall packages (it will reboot, just reinstall packages again)
you will now be in clockwork
install zip from sdcard, and point to the rom

Thank you so much for the zip file, everything went smoothly. I liked the voice telling me how much time each process would take. However, when I searched the app store for DBZ scouter it still cant find it, or any other paid apps! This is getting really frustrating. Should I give it a few minutes/hours for the paids apps to show up? I am enjoying the rom though, very smooth compared to the stock ones.
It looks like I'm not the only one

I guess it was just a coincidence that this happened the same time I unlocked my phone.. heh. Well now I can finally go back to studying for exams
Moved to Q&A.
Hello, guys. This is my first post after lurking for a while, adding roms and getting all of the good stuff for my captivate. But i bumped across the new market. I didn't follow instructions completely and deleted the market. So how should I fix this? I don't want to reflash my phone, because this would take 6 days and I am going on vacation in a few days, and I don't think I will survive without my beloved phone.
Any help on how to download the market app would be much appreciated. I have the android market app v2.12 but it will not let me install through my computer...
Still have the *.apk for the new market? If not you can go to the Themes Forum and do a search there - someone had the *.apk file for the new market app. You can download it - put it on your SDCard and then run it through your file manager - should install and your back in business.
Will need to use the SEARCH feature to find it though as I don't have the link.
Allright, thanks. I hope this works because normally I could not install apps directly to my phone because of at&t but i will try this.
btw.. are you on a stock ROM (2.1) or have you flashed to a custom ROM? Also if your phone isn't rooted this method won't allow you to install the app.
Sorry forgot to mention it.
And uh.. it never takes me 6 days to flash - usually takes me about 15-20 minutes to flash back to stock, install the new ROM, and restore my applications/app data.
It WAS on android 2.2 but I'm not sure if it is anymore because i tried restoring it to factory settings. And I'm talking about sending it to samsung to reflash it, I don't know how to do it myself :/
Oh, and yes. It is rooted.
and the app from there is kind of messed up... Very glitchy (crashes a lot and lags like crazy) and doesn't show every app in searches, like z4root which is how i easily rooted my phone the first time.
So i really just want the old market back but it will just not let me.
Go into Menu -> Settings -> About Phone and look to where it says "Firmware Version". If it says 2.2 and your phone has been rooted it should work fine.
Otherwise... you would at least need to Root it if on 2.2.
And if your not on 2.2? I'm not sure if this will work as I know it was pulled from a 2.2 updated phone.
Ok.. Plan B
You should be able to find the old Market app inside the *.zip file of any ROM you have downloaded. Just make sure they are 2.2 Froyo ROMs
Open up the *.zip file and go into system/app and look for (I'm 99% sure) "MarketUpdater.apk"
Copy that file to your SDCard and install using your file manager - should overwrite everything and hopefully your good.
Also.. you could go to your Menu --> Settings --> Applications and probably uninstall the current Market app you have downloaded first - delete any cache/data under there first before uninstalling.
Hopefully that will throw back on the original market app and your all set.
The only problem with that is... It was this one click downloader thing... Odin3. So I don't know... It also won't let me reupdate it for some reason....
Hrm.. This is from the OTA JH7 zip I have lying around. Give this a try and see if it works.
If not you will need to re-flash back to stock.
Could you supply me with a good rom thats easy to download and has the market and ****, like android 2.2, because the odin crap doesn't work for me.
Hrm.. I'd say go here if you wish to install a custom ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819105
Then a few options you have is Cognition, Auxura, or Assonance.
I've ran all of them and they are all great ROM's. I currently am running Assonance with the Gingerbread theme and it runs great.
Just make sure to do the reading first then download the ROM and you should be on your way.... just remember failure to follow the directions if on you and your warranty is already toast
Its already too late for my warrenty..... But I'll go ahead and try these. Thanks.
Actually. Something that would REALLY help would be helping me get into download mode. Every time i plug my phone into the computer in download mode it says usb device not recognized. How do i fix this? I've tried about every samsung drivers... None of them work... If i could get it into download mode i could get it working easily
So i installed the doomed froyo rom on my thrill 4g and am loving it (had the "almost cyanogen" GB rom before this but couldn't live with the bugs). My only gripe is i cannot for the life of me figure out how to get google talk installed on it. I've tried everything from downloading it on the fone and clicking it to install (says install failed) to forcing it into the system/apps folder via terminal on my mac and cmd prompt on my pc to double check myself.
Nothing has worked thus far. I've tried a "custom" gtalk apk, the newest version (1.3), and the previous version all to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm not a fan of any of the 3rd party apps that handle gtalk, so that's kind of out of the question. I really want the official gtalk app cause i fell in love with it while using the cyanogen mod GB rom
Use the one included in the rom it is based off of... im guessing 10e stock
Sent from my LG-P925 using XDA App
the doomed froyo rom doesn't come with gtalk, its supposed to be a "light" rom ...it looks like it was just updated to 2.0 with a new kernel, I'll try that out and see if theres a gtalk app included.
You want gtalk I can see about making that work out for you. What you could try is take the official gtalk app and put that into the doomed froyo slim zip file. Just open it up, and put the gtalk app in the system/app and flash the rom file. That should do the trick.
That'd be great...i actually tried that method already, but it seems it doesn't work...its as if the ROM is ignoring it cause it doesn't show up in my installed apps list, but is def. in the apps folder.
keep up the good work tho, love ur ROM
Have you tried opening the .apk or .zip of the gtalk app in cwm or in Rom manager? It worked for me installing it on cyanogenmod thrill.
I decided to root my Galaxy S I9000 the other day to delete some of the really annoying bloatware and free up some space.
Knowing my n00bie, idiotic self, I didn't back up any of the things I deleted and now my Android App Store no longer downloads anything.
After some research I came to the conclusion that the reason was because I deleted the "DownloadsProvider.apk" app. I've tried re-downloading the files off the internet but when I put it back into that same system files folder and change its permissions to match all the other apps, I find that my problem is still not solved.
I figured this may be due to an Android update around last year which gave a "Downloads" application at the devices application menu. But after replacing the file, this "Download" application is not there like it use to be (before I made changes) so I figured it may be an outdated version.
I also forgot if it had an ".odex" file previously along with the the ".apk" file and each time I try to get the files from random sources of the internet, the file size is always different.
Maybe someone could provide a full set of stock apps for this version of Android? Not sure if that's how to fix this but I really am struggling and need some serious expert help.
I'm on Android 2.3.6 and Baseband I9000XXJVU if that's helpful.
Thanks in advance.
I really need help, no one has replied. Great.
I think that your best bet would be to back up important data and restore to a stock rom. But I'd say wait till someone else confirms this before actually doing it
I'd be happy to do that but I can't find any source that offers a full set of up-to-date stock roms. Either that or they aren't compatible with Galaxy S/Android 2.3.6

An other option.could be a.custom ROM. Or try and actually install the download manager apk.

I've managed to get Android Download Manager.APK on my phone but the Android Market still crashes when I try to download something and the problem is not solved.
I've also tried clearing the data/cache of the Market and that hasn't helped either.
Maybe I could solve the problem by updating the firmware? I don't know, I'm out of ideas...
Updating or reinstalling will deffo fix this but.you will lose everything thats not backed up. Back important stuff up. Download stock rom that you want and install using Odin. Or try updating through KIES.

Okay so i messed up and geting fc issue with my text messaging app and am not able to install it from titianium backup no matter what i do (i have pro). Found /system image here and just need help installing it.
I want to keep it stock but remove bloat. Can i just copy the zip file to sd and install? or use RSD Lite?
I also read that if you replace the build.prop to and older say 2.3.4 and then try to do the ota upgrade it will work. Can anyone confirm this works and has older build.prop?
Using XT860 on Bell canada
**Backup whatever you can before using RSDlite as this will wipe your phone (except /sdcard /sdcard-ext)**
It's probably possible to fix your SMS issues but I don't know how.. maybe start by taking a look at the logs..
adb logcat .. or some logcat app from the market. You should probably start by this, unless you feel ready to jump into custom ROMs..
If all else fails you can always get a fresh system image..
But unlike the XT862.. we XT860 users on Bell don't have a leaked official SBF file to flash back to stock Bell with RSDlite/fastboot.
But we can flash a few leaked Latin America SBF files and change the language back to English/French.
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_solana/list.php
The only way that I know of so far.. to get back to stock Bell is to use Willis111 file and flash it from recovery like a ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1465153
Either way, I suggest you then install hashcode's safestrap so you have working custom recovery with backups and everything.. and try out the latest CM9. Safestrap will allow you to easily switch between stock and custom ROM and backup/restore your future setups in case something goes wrong in the future..

i used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340492 and got all my bloat back.
But as soon as i removed any app again using TB it breaks messaging, think i'm uninstalling something that the messaging app needs but don't seem like i'm touching anything that has to do with it.
don't really want to go into custom roms this phone is for my mom and already wasted a day on it. Just need stock with bloat removed so its a bit quicker. My HTC is all decked out on the other hand
Be careful what you uninstall in TB..
I remember having issues after deleting some yahoo thing on mine when I was stuck on stock. (Contacts would FC)
EDIT: I did freeze and/or uninstall those without any issues citrix, kobo, GPS Nav., a few games, and zoompass when I was stock.
it seems to be alright, i striped out everything such as media connect, dlna, portal etc. Just to make the phone a simple phone.
It seems when i removed the email app it was causing the messaging app to fc. The phone seems stable after a complete wipe and don't see any fc'ing.
What i don't get is if i use TB to uninstall any app i cannot get TB to restore it and the only way is to flash the system image again.
I may just flash system again and just freeze everything i don't want.
Glad to see someone using my system dumps!
Did you do the OTA to 2.3.6 yet? That fixes A LOT of bugs, improves battery life and camera as well.
Yesterday I just loaded my first custom ROM on my phone, using the safestrap method and threw on CM9... so far I think it's really sweet. I really hope we get Official ICS but if we don't I'm going to stick with a custom ICS rom.
I can confirm you shouldn't uninstall or freeze the Email app (universal inbox thing) as it will indeed FC a few other things..
What I do in TB for stuff I want to completely uninstall is this:
-convert to user app (as opposed to system app)
-back it up
-uninstall as if it was any other app (from TB or not..)
If I want to restore.. I restore it from TB.. which reinstalls it as a user app.. then change it back to system app from TB.
Alternative: manually backup and rename or move the apk in /system..
And put it back in to restore.
In any case.. a reboot might be a good idea after restoring..
PS: CM9 has been my daily driver for a while now.. I had to go back to stock for a few minutes the other day (needed the HDMI mirror..) and I really wouldn't go back to stock as my daily..(Safestrap works wonders for switching between the two though..)

phone came with 2.3.6 so no OTA, you dump works wonders. I may flash it again and uninstall thinks like kobo, citrix etc and freeze others like universal inbox.
What does freezing do anyways, does it stop it from loading in RAM?
