Hi,
Sorry for the stupid query but i just want to know if is normal or not.
Optimus 2x P990 2.3.4 stock fairly new phone so the battery hasn't got the chance to do many charge cycles (only 4)
The thing is when watching a movie (normal m4v or avi not HD or such) i see the battery drain 1% every 3 minutes so if i start a movie with 100% i get with around 65-68% ~ of battery left.
low brightness, no wifi, no data, no BT, low sound and using MX Videoplayer.
Is the drainage fair or is too much ??......1% every 2-3 minutes of movie played.
Thanx,
I think thats good draining percent for watching video =)
I agree with that. The draining is normal.
But maybe the stock video player is a bit more efficient and battery friendly because of the better hw acceleration.
Hello!
Yes, this is perfectly normal as you should keep in mind what playing video means for your device…
CPU can’t sleep, the backlight of your display (on of the heaviest power consumer in this phone) is alight all the time, data access to SD card all the time and you have sound playing too - I assume.
I usually get 2h-4h of video playback on a full charge before 15% warning pops up – depending on other apps running in the background like i.e. gsm-data/cloud syncs etc.
In Airplane mode using the phone on a flight I get max. 5h.
So if you plan to use the phone as a video player, I would recommend to have a external power source handy…
BTW: I usually use moboplayer and non converted standard resolution mpeg-files from onlinetvrecorder.com.
thanx all for replay,
and yes with stock player i get better battery life.

First off, sorry if this is similar to another thread. I had very specific things happening so I thought it warranted a new post.
Okay, so I was wondering if my battery life was normal. I was browsing the web earlier for about one hour (looking for info on my battery troubled, oddly enough) on wifi. After I finished I noticed my battery had dropped significantly: from 79 to 58 to be precise. I use the lowest backlight setting, I kill apps frequently.
My ROM right now is Serendipity 6.1, stock serendipity kernel. No oc or uv. Is this normal for a battery to die so quickly?

ive been having the same problem(sudden change of battery levels). Wifi has been known to kill batteries on the captivate, or at least in my opinion. also, check if you have any background apps running that use up cpu resources. those kill your battery too.

depending on what you are doing.. if you watch movies thru it which requires intensive processor use then thats normal it really depends...it also eats up battery easily if backlight is set at the highest.

It's possible that you have a bad flash. You could try flashing back to stock, running master clear, and then reflashing Serendipity.

Actually, watching movies does not use a lot of processing power. On a recent flight I watched over 6 hours of movies and still had over 30% battery left when I landed. You can also adjust the backlight from within the movie player so it isn't too bright. Wifi is a huge drain, especially with the screen on while web surfing. Another drain is poor cell service since the phone will be continuously looking for signal. Having only 1-2 bars reception uses more power than having 4-5. When it drops below one bar repeatedly it uses even more. A 20% drop after an hour of web surfing on wifi is not that unusual.

yeah you have a point in there that's why I say it depends. when you only watch a you tube that has short buffering time it may not uses more processing power try watching movies from other site like webtv360 that constantly buffer until the end of the movie it will drain your battery fast sky high. maybe clearing dalvik cache and battery stats or even doing factory reset with his current rom will solve the issue as there might be some datas left lurking from previous rom after flashing that causes undesired effect with regards to battery drain. most of the time this will cure some icompatibility issues and force closes, doing this after flashing a new rom will save you more headache in the future.
Thanks for the help guys. I'll try to keep it off of wifi when im not using it and I've been putting it in airplane mode at points during he day. I just undervolted, so hopefully that'll help my battery.

Ahh, you didn't say streaming movies from a website. That's a double whammy since you are using the network or wifi and having to decode the stream on the fly. Very processor intensive, as you stated. I was referring to watching movies stored on my external SD card.
I did a limited testing of video playback battery life only. 1.1 stock and CM7. If you find this interesting please provide your test results with your conditions. I did this testing to find what can make the best battery life in case I'm stuck with NC without power, like in plane.
Here are conditions, but keep in mind that the testing is far from being perfect, I could not make conditions exactly the same. I am a noob, after all, in March I got Nook Color and this is my first Android device. Should give some high level picture though.
1.5 hour 720x400 mp4 movie from SD card, restarted every hour (set up a timer for myself). Would love to find some automated environment.
Display brightness - ~18-20%, don't know the number, used only slider, tried to make brightness identical, but could make a mistake. This is to me a comfortable brightness to watch movie in room without sunlight or in airplane.
Tests:
1. 7 hours 15 minutes. New rooted stock 1.1 stock player (gallery), Wi-Fi on. (Wi-fi consumed 7% according to stats).
2. 6 hours 30 minutes. Stock 1.1, stock player, Wi-Fi off, Phone.apk and TelephonyProvider.apk renamed. The big difference with first test is that I installed bunch of free software (like 100 or so apps and games) and many probably were running in background automatically. I didn't know about autostarts then.
3. 7 hours ~20 minutes. CM 7.0.2 on eMMC, moboplayer, Wi-Fi off. Background processes suppressed by autostarts.
I disabled all widgets except Batteryleft (it doesn't seem to be accurate, BTW) and I'm using basic wallpaper. Nothing fancy.
Next time I will try to see what effect few dynamic widgets and live wallpaper will have.
So far my impression is that CM7 has almost as good battery life as stock 1.1 (maybe up to 5% lower, but that could be within margin of error, and that is OK with me). This is for active use, I know about sleep issues.
Note: Battery stats in CM7 show that display consumed ~50% of the power (47% is media server). This is too different from stock where I saw like 20% for display consumption with similar brightness. Different tools were used for sure. Anyway, looks like slight variation in brightness can affect battery life significantly.
Question: When nook shut down because of low battery, I wasn't looking at it. So, it's +- 5 minutes error. Is there a log file in Android to find when it exactly shut down?
Any comments are welcome.
Has anyone ever used the Galaxy S as a media player only (turn 3G/GSM off completely). Any idea what the battery life is like? I never tested this out with my captivate when I had it and now I'm looking for a new media player to replace my POS ipod touch
I'm looking to get at least ~30 hours of audio playback, but the more the merrier
Not sure if this is a good example but have been doing some travel between Singapore and Ohio (USA). Total travel time to my destination is about 27 hours and basically keep my Galaxy S I9000 on airplane mode.
My main usage is for music and playing TV shows. If I play music, some soduku, and check the time and messages between stopovers, I can probably get through the 27 hours with about 5% left. If I play TV shows, then I won't make through the flight (maybe 12 approx). I make sure I carry a spare battery. Something to also be aware of, is that on my I9000, you cannot play any video or music less than 15% battery power (not sure if this is Android specific). The last 15% can seem to last a lot longer which is a shame.
BTW, I had a Gb iPod nano on a previous trip. If I had not lost it on the flight, then I would prefer using that mainly because of the size and battery life. I have added a 32 Gb micro sd card to my Galaxy so I have all my music which helps, but am always concerned about battery life. Again, not sure if this helps or is a good example.

Is it the default player that doesn't let you play with less than 15% battery life?
Good information though Thanks
I use the default samsung player but will try others later on.

Buff.. I've tried with the MIUI music player on Froyo and the same issue, no more than 27 hours of life
Bullsh***!!
Why on the hell i9000 eats so battery?

Is this with the cellular radio off? Is that 27 hours of continuous battery life? What ROM/kernel are you running?
Hi
I wiped my phone, was on doc's js8 custom rom with Speedmod Froyo kernal. Before that I was on Stock JPU with CF-Root.
Flashed XXJVP stock rom from Ramad's thread via ODIN, rebooted, installed Speedmod for GB, rebooted, flash Ramad's Deodexed XXJVP stock rom and then re flashed Speedmod for GB...
Battery for normal use is great, but watching a video is eating way too much battery...
When I was on JPU, I was able to watch two full movies (about 3 hours total) played a wordcross game and then watched several music videos and listened to a load of .mp3 whilst on a flight to Eygpt, using the stock Samsung player, screen brightness set to 2% and the player brightness set to 2%, phone in Airplane mode...
After 5-6 hours use I had gone from 95% battery to around 45-50%.
Now on JVP, I ran a video for 1 hour and with the stock player again set to the same brightess, 2%... after the hour checked my battery and it was down nearly 50%
This was Not in Airplane mode this time, but would this make a big difference, in Normal use I loose 1.09% battery per hour!
Has anybody else on JVP noticed similar, or is it just my phone?
This is almost in every ROM the problem;-)
This is Not the normal Android OS or System drain, my battery lasts two days easily, as long as I don't use the video player and the drain stops when the video player stops.
hmmm data connection does consume lot of battery but 1-2%/hr at the most... so i'm guessing u have lot of unnecessary apps running, when u dont actually use it. go to settings and in about phone check the battery usage, check the apps which use the battery at the most and delete them if possible. else u can use a task manager and kill unwanted processes from time to time. hope this helps!
Cheers but tried that already, biggest app drain during the 1 hour video playback was media services 4%. Nothing else stood out, and as I said in op, normaly battery drain under same conditions but no video playback, I only loose 1.09% per hour, so it looks like the video player did all the damage?

in that case use mobo player for viewing videos(much better than stock plus it supports more formats).. use this n see if u still have drain
depends of what video codec using your file... some codecs have low battery drain some codecs medium and some high... compare working on JPU and JVP with the same video...
The video s are all .avi or mp4, same as I played when on jpu rom.

Anyone experiencing battery heating issues?
The battery temp stays from 25C to 36C when not in use/constant usage.
however, after prolonged period in lockscreen mode, & i unlocking to use it, it heats up pretty fast, playing games worse; ends up with 42C to 48C, highest being 51C.
is this a common issue? (as some of my friends have this prob too), and it's only the dark blue Note.
any ideas for fix?
Mine gets pretty toasty as well. If I use it while charging it, I've seen it get to 48 degrees.
My Battery died tonight. I woke up after i burned nearly my arm becaus of the hot device. it boots shortly because of demaged battery but i dont know if the Note is ok. display issues. It was on CM 04, on 03 i dont have recogniced any heating problems. If my new battery arrives i must test if it has no damage.
@gilrad: i never use my phone when charging so that i can get a more accurate charge.(just my own thinking) still it can get abit hot(but this is the normal heating)
just referring to light/normal/heavy usage.
@wtwo2: how did your note get hot in the first place ?

it was on charging. it boots shortly with battery and charger in but then goes off(usb port). battery doesn't load any more
edit:with charger in wall it boots normally and i can use it but i testet it only shortly, better wait for new battery.
Until now 'no' issues with device.
Yep, same here on my Note, International version from Latin America, GB, rooted.
It gets hot when I do intensive activities such as:
- Watching full featured movie (1+ hour)
- Playing games with tons of action (not simple one like Draw Something)
- Browsing website with heavy content (Flash, ads)
So far, has NOT resulted in too high of temperature such that it burn my hand.
Mine is heating like toster
My note is heating up very fast. I found when it is heating so badly
1.When you search for 3g networks or wifi signals or when downloading at high speeds.
2.When you start ur flashlight for 5 or more minutes
3.When you use your GPU at most for example watching HD video and playing high quality games
I saw my battery upto 58 degrees
I saw my battery draining like seconds when i started watching a hd video it goes on decreasing from 78,77,76...............27 in just 20 mins time with 3g activated.
Deadhanuman
Its odd that people report that the Note gets hot while watching videos. Are these online flash videos or something? I use my Note to watch a lot of HD videos, and it always runs cool. It may be to do with the encoding on the video or the player... I tend to encode to High profile H264 and use mVideoplayer. AFAIK, this allows GPU decoding which runs cooler and draws less power.
Some players use the CPU (the early versions of Mobi player did this I think), which gets hotter faster and drains the battery quicker.
Mine often gets hot only after i've left in lockscreen mode for quite a while -> wake-up -> use apps before it cools down after quite some time, with the app still running

and now it's getting a bigger drain even when i leave it locked while i sleep. dropping from 100% to 60% in one night and from battery graph, it shows that my phone's getting wokeup periodically - any ideas..?
and now i have to reboot often once i realise the battery cant enter deep sleep mode -> battery drain. it's monitored by betterbatterystats where my deep sleep time is 0s, anyone got any ideas what's causing the wakes?
