[Q] iOS 5.0.1 Porting now possible? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Wait, I know it's a strange and maybe impossible question, BUT today with the new 5.0.1 release of iOS, seems that Apple has acknowledged the possibility to EXPLORE the entire File System.
Don't know if it's a temporary bug or if it's a new "open" strategy.
So, I'm asking if with this new firmware there's a chance to "port" iOS to other devices, such as our Nexus One...
Obviously there would be the need to rewrite all the drivers, etc.
What do you think guys?

It opened the door for things such as legal Siri ports for non-4S iDevices [ 3Gs, iPod Touch , iPhone 4, etc] But I don't think porting to a non-Apple device would be legal, not to mention also very difficult.

Yep I know that
Maybe someone will do the MAGIC

Wait, what? Porting iOS to android? Why would someone ever want to do that?

Whhyyyyy.
If you want to have an iPhone go get an iPhone.

Sorry, no, not even remotely possible.
If you wanted, you could try and hire a crack team to physically infiltrate the Apple HQ and steal the source code. You would probably be looking at a lot of time in prison if you fail though.
So don't fail.
Once we have the source code, don't expect things to go smoothly either, it could take months and months of work to get something even slightly working.
The whole time we'd have to do it undercover, word of mouth, passing the test versions from person to person under the cloak of the night. Otherwise Apple will come down on you with a full riot squad.
Just buy an iPhone if you want iOS.

Yeah, for most phones, it's a pain just to get MIUI, CM and aosp to work sometimes. I know on the HTC Evo 4g it took the CM team a few months just to get 4g wimax working. I can't imagine how long it'd take to just get radios working on an iOS port.
iOS blows anyway. It'd be fun, but not worth it.

A WebOS port would be much more feasible. Or just use Ultimate iPhone theme for MIUI if you like iOS.

iPhones.. They new ones have good hardware but the software is making the hardware look dated. iOS blows on so many levels and you can compare it with being inside a prison.
iOS = A securely locked prison with 24/7 guarding of what you do.
Android OS = the world outside this prison.

Port Iphone OS?

A lot of progress is being made as android OS has now been ported to iphone 2g and 3g. Wondering if we could do the reverse on the Nexus? Now before I get flamed or whatever, its not that I want an Iphone or think its better, just like the choice is all....
http://gizmodo.com/5533312/iphone-3g-shown-running-android
iphone os isn't open source. and, a nexus one user, why the hell would want to install iphone os ?!?
call me selfish lol never used an iphone but thought it would be cool...smh ok was a thought, back to drolling over my nexus....
Wrong section, and the last comment is correct that iPhone OS isnt' open source so we'll never see it openly available. You should learn C++ and port it for us!
I agree
One of the things, the world doesn't need: an iphone os port for nexus one xD
applications
I think the best and only reason to have the iphone OS is to have so many different applications.
I wonder if there is a way to somehow boot up iphone applications on an android phone using some sort of compatibility mode? That would be ideal and give us the best of both worlds, a crazy amount of apps and android.
the prediction is 75,000-100,000 android apps by 2010. how many more apps do you need?
This iPhone isn't completely closed source. The kernel is open, and that's likely where most of the porting work would need to go anyway.

go ahead and dream, dont come crying to me when apple Legal dept rips off your head and funnels in feces from Jobs himself when you actually do port it

Why would the OP come to you and cry? are you a lawyer?
porting another operating system to a machine that you personally own will not get you into trouble.
You can limit yourself upto only provide instructions on how to do this, and not by distributing the actual image in public, you will not get in trouble for it.
I am no lawyer but a paralegal in IP.
I would agree that this is infact a good project, and/or i would even dream of porting Winmo to have a triple boot in our (What google states as the Developers phone = Nexus one).
Don't get me wrong, Android is Awesome, but having more options is always better!
It is like a PC compared to a Playstation
In Playstation, you are limited to playing PS games.
In a PC, besides the PC games, you can also play different kind of PS, Gamecube, PS2, etc. emulators.
iphone apps
I guess the amount of iphone apps does not really apply to my desire to have a compatibility mode to run them. Just the types of apps. I'm a medical student and as the iphone has much more support on this front, I think it would be quite beneficial be able to run the apps that aren't ported over to android. I hope that things will change however and more medical applications will be made for android soon. It's just a matter of time really...
I don't want the entire iPhone OS because its stupid.. if someone could reveal their scrolling physics, it would be great....

Better yet, by law "Illegal Distributing of such" will be prosecuted and punishable by law.
as such, licensing agreement does not constitute unless it is being publicly distributed.
Although, realistically this port will never happen and if it will, i am not convinced that it will be very soon.
how about, FU*K the fruit maker, and do what ever we like..
only distribute an possible port in secret..?
But i really doubt this will ever happen, but an emulator or somthing similar for the apps would be NICE..
Doing so will be a giant backward step.

I totally agree.. I mean android market is getting bigger each day and getting more popular as verizon's advertisements for the android keeps getting better.
but, to be able to run iphone apps to our beloved nexus one will be a big achievement as there are still lots of iphone apps that i wish to be developed for Android as well, like my favorite Dakeno!

Just because the Android Market is growing, that doesn't necessarily mean that anything is exactly getting better. Apple is still beating us in the game department, and due to their sponsors - they have apps that are like... important? Or, well, more useful to some..
I don't know if Android will ever reach that polished level the iPhone has, regarding to apps that is. I don't even play games really on my phone, if they looked up to par.. then maybe. Android is progressing, though.
Just developed a terrible rash on my taint after reading this thread. Great.

Your comparing an OS that is in its Third/Fourth Iteration to one that is in its Second. To say that iPhone OS 2.0 was fluid and completely polished would be a huge lie. Back then, it did not have the ridiculous catalog of apps that it does now, nor was it as fast as it is now. In time, when Android reaches 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, ect, you will see Android reach a level of polish that the iPhone OS has. Right now, Android is seeing a huge increase in market-share. With this will come developers. With developers, more quality apps will come. Android has the momentum to do it. I would believe that Android will become polished by the end of the year, possibly early next year based off of its growth and progression.

[Q]IOS 4 running on an android phone ! can our sgs do that !

i was browsing the web and i found an interesting video showing the htc magic running ios 4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IY-uRRCARJw
i was thinking that our sgs has almost the same spec as the iphone 4(processor, amount of rom and ram), it would be possible to dump ios 4 on it ! that would definetly decrease the sell of iphone 4 ! with the 4 inch SA screen ios apps and games would rock on the sgs !
i also believe that the sgs has the most powerful HW , here is the GL benchmark results showing sgs on top of other phones followed by the iphone
http://www.glbenchmark.com/result.jsp
The biggest problem would be the resolution. The iphone 4 resolution is 960x640 and our SGS is only 800x400.
So porting iOS 4 to a SGS, sounds very dificult.
Looks fake but a very good (not nice) theme.

Android has been up and running on older iPhones for a few months now via dualbooting (iBoot).
Got to remember however that Android is designed to run on a variety of hardware configurations.
iOS is NOT designed to run on anything without specific Apple-selected hardware. Drivers would need to be created for each component of each phone, the resolution would need to be the same, it would need to be able to sync with iTunes to use, etc. Basically, far too much bother.
I would be more interested in the possibilities of WP7 or Meego (or maybe WebOS in the future?...) ports since they're available for lots of hardware configurations. Particularly WP7, since the Galaxy S seems to share the exact hardware requirements for the first generation of WP7 devices launching next month, including those by Samsung.

I bought the SGS after choosing that I wanted an android phone. I didn't pick this phone and then settled for the os that came with it.
Even if legit, why would you want to do that? If you want iOS get an iPhone, it would run better on the hardware it was designed for anyway.
Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

As far as I remember that video is fake, and it was done so that an iPhone's screen was captured with some program and then played with the HTC. The guy admittedly had to record the video a couple of times by the time he managed to synchronise his finger movement to the video playing on the HTC.
I agree with the most committed Android fans here, why the hell would we want to have iOS??? Like most we made the decision for freedom and choice and to be able to create and share our own content, not just consume.
However, I am curious to know if there is a way to get IPA's to work on Android. The market is a little short on well polished games so it would be great to see if there is a way to get them onto the current generation of Android devices.
"why not"
cause "you can"
a hack is a hack, it's fun, doesn't mean you should replace android by ios for daily use. still, i'd try it for fun.
now, the video is prolly a fake anyway, but hey, you never know
Its coming out on april 1st next year a leaked samsung doc said
I was introduced to Android by installing Froyo on my iPhone 3G and dual booting it with iOS4. It made me want to sell the iPhone and get a "real" Android phone since the battery only lasted 90 mins in Froyo and it was seriously underpowered (but still faster than my mate's Magic).
Like hell, am I ever going back to iOS! To any of you who haven't previously owned an iPhone, trust me when I say that you aren't missing out on anything. Tweaking or customising anything in iOS on supported hardware was a pain in the back-side. Porting it to another device would be an absolute nightmare and really not worth the hassle!
"Why would I want to" and the like really don't add value to the conversation, dudes...
I was tempted to jump into the "can I run WM7 on the SGS" thread with the same childish smart ass comment, but took the mature path and just didn't bother reading the thread at all. Despite not being able to fathom why someone would want to, it's a legitimate technical question to ask if someone is interested in doing it.
Why the hate????
I've always known the guys at xda doing awesome things to their mobile phones, just because they can.
It's this "because we can" and "can we do this" attitude that has built xda from nothing to something very brilliant.
Had we not had such enterprising members, we'd never become the no. 1 andorid hackers in the world.
There is not a single forum that is as good and as xda.
Anyways I am very interested in this project. Dual booting the iOs is still awesome.
It's not a bad idea at all although it will take years before anything ever boots.

Nokia to beat Android?

Here's the article: http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/13/nokia-our-first-priority-is-beating-android/
My first thoughts were....hahahaha! In their dreams.
Open source can't be beat, simple as that. But Google do need to come up with a better strategy for implementing their OS on the devices otherwise fragmentation will drive potential customers away.
In my view WP7 is a step backwards, the UI is horrible with home being filed with tons of tiles that you have to scroll through, no real multitasking, locked down like iOS etc, and now Nokia thinks that this move will beat Android. Are they that arrogant?
I did a speed test comparison between DHD and HD7 and WP7 got its ass smacked, it loaded apps/games much slower.
They should of made a better version of N900, that was not a bad phone but could of been a monster.
Your thoughts?
The day that Nokia has dominance over Android, I will get an iphone. I currently own the 1 and only Evo 4g, rooted, stock. (wireless tether of course).
yeah i think nokia is making a bad move
lol good old nokia trying to make a comeback...
I honestly don't know who even carries Nokia phones anymore They once made really nice phones. Windows mobile or phone 7 or what ever they are calling it this year is in the same boat imo. I carried wm since the HTC 8125. And year after year I pationatly waited for ms to get it right, and they never did. It did get better in terms of reliability but I still had to reset my tilt 2 a few times a week.
I think the team up could be good for them but I could care less.
To me, It's like 2 old men in your neighborhood teaming up and thinking they are gonna take back that snow shoveling biz that they had when they were kids all the while everyone already has the youngsters down the street with their self propelled snow blowers that knock out the jobs in no time.
They pissed off most of us loyal wm folks along time ago and you know how that saying about screw me once, screw me twice goes....not gonna happen to me.

Speaking of steps backwards hows the whole no GPU accelerated UI treating you guys? I'm loving having a homescreen that doesnt look like an iphone ripoff. Nokia has an astounding market share in the European market, they have the power to help drive WP7 much higher. Call it a step backwards if you'd like. It's nice to not have to flash a new rom at least once a week to have a functional phone.
I like Nokias phones. My brother has the n8 and the camera is amazing! hopefully this works out and I'll get a nokia with a xenon flash

There it is, that's what I was waiting for.
UI is hardware accelerated on 2.3 and up, even 2.2 can have it with a minor file modification. How the no copy/paste going? Or hows the whole can't edit a email when forwarding going? When M$ bring out an update will you jump around like a little schoolgirl and call it innovation? C'mon man, the OS is seriously lacking the most important features, it's shameful.
Sure stock UIs layout is slightly like iPhones but looks nothing like it though. You see, I can make the UI looks how I want which fits my needs, not what a few guys think it should be.
Flashing ROMs has nothing to do with having a functional phone, it's only to improve it further and bring out the potential.
Nokia may help with a few sales but many longtime fans will turn around and look elsewhere for a phone to fulfill their needs.

Important features? in the 2 years I had android I can not remember a single occurrence in which I used C&P or needed to edit a forwarded email. Would it be nice? Sure. Is it necessary? Not at all. The point is while android has these features most of them are haphazardly thrown together and hardly functional where what WP7 has (even though it is lacking some features) truly works without having to jump through hoops. GPU acceleration is possible apparently on 2.3 plus but due to fragmentation and other issues it isn't implemented. If you can truly say the vibrant with its impossible lag or the dodgy touchscreen on the cliq or any of the other ill built phones were functional before custom roms your much more prone to fanboyism than I. It's nice to have a phone that really works, android was a low-end alternative to the iphone, putting it on high end devices is like throwing a Chevy cavalier engine in a lambo, it just makes them look bad except to the community thats always flashing roms which frankl, I dont have the time for any more.
I think Nokia partnering with Microsoft to make WP7 phones is a dumb move. Elop was quoted as saying Nokia is like being on a burning oil platform in the North Sea. So what he wants to do, is to jump onto another burning oil platform called WP7? I think it's entirely due to the fact that Elop is a former Microsoft exec!
I wasn't at all surprised, when I read an article yesterday that said investors were so upset with the news that Nokia stock price fell 14% and many Nokia employees were so upset, they used flex time and left work early.
What I think Nokia should have done, is partnered with Google and used Android. These new phones should be supplied with some kind of proprietary libraries or emulation that only works in Nokia phones to allow existing Symbian apps to run seamlessly. That way, it would provide a practical upgrade path for existing Nokia phone owners. This worked great for Apple when they went to OS X which was a completely different UNIX-based architecture, but used Rosetta to allow old PPC Mac OS apps to run. They could even market a play on words with Symbian related to symbiosis.
I just don't see how going to the smartphone platform with the least market share will help matters. WP7 has less market share than even old WinMo 6.x according to current stats.

Your whole argument is based on the foundation that WP7 in 4 months didn't sell as much as WM did since 03? Really? Ya don't say? Their choices were either be just another fish in the android OEM pool that would have received no more attention and no more rights than any other or be THE manufacturer of WP7. Really though, why would you jump from marketing symbian to marketing some re-skinned version of android... that's like jumping from Windows ME to windows Vista. They're both buggy and both require tons of modification before they're usable. Android only sold because it was marketed by google and essentially looked like a low-end iphone for every carrier. WP7 is innovation, it currently lacks a few basic features but what it does have works and thats more than any other OS except iOS can say and honestly, who wants those hardware limitations and ugly UI?

No, my whole argument is based on WP7 being a sales FAIL. The comparison to WM is only a point of reference, because it's generally well accepted that except for a few fanboys, nobody likes WM.
No, their choices were to use Android, a product that people actually WANT, vs WP7, a product that nobody wants. It doesn't matter how awesome or innovative you may think WP7 is, if nobody wants it, nobody's going to buy it. So if Nokia wants to make money, and unless I'm mistaken, but all companies exist to do one thing and that is make money, they should choose the platform that makes money rather than one nobody wants.
You're saying iOS has an ugly UI? Compared to WP7? Seriously? For most people I know (and according to sales figures, most people worldwide), the UI is what turned them off to WP7 and drove them to Android or iOS.

This is basic functionality I use most days. Even if I used it monthly the whole point is that when I need it it's there, thats the power of android. You don't need all the features every day, but when you do need it its all there ready.
I will take a speedy UI and no c&p over the opposite any day. No one dropped wp7 and turned to Android or IOS because of the UI. No one has used wp7 because they're a fanboy of either of the other oses and think anything else is wrong. Wp7 in its first poor iteration has a more complete feeling than any of the 30ish Android devices I've owned and that's just sad. Wp7 is small now because people fear change regardless of how much smoother the user experience is.

Not true. The only fanboys I know are on this site. I've recently talked to many smartphone n00bs who are getting a smartphone for the first time. Just from playing with the phone in the showroom, they narrow it down to Android or iPhone. WP7 is never even considered. Some people will switch from Android to iPhone and vice versa. People on this forum excluded, I don't know anyone who has even considered going from iPhone to WP7 or Android to WP7. Even my wife, who isn't even remotely a fanboy, has no interest in WP7 simply because she doesn't like how, "it looks so plain and boring". Maybe people would love WP7 if they actually used it for awhile, but Microsoft can't even get them through the door, much less reel them in.
Wp7 needs a mascot like a bald guy in a turtleneck or a little green robot. Then it would be srsbiz.

Anyone else misses their iPhones?

Just wondering if there is a lot of people here that have had the iPhone prior til an android device. How do you like the transition?
I have had the O2X for a month and i can say that i really miss my iPhone So much more smooth, fast, battery life... And if anything goes wrong you have the iTunes backup so you dont need to be an expert til reflash with NVflash and you dont loose all your apps and settings...
I'm using a Motorola Milestone/Droid, and I really don't miss my iPhone 3G. The thing was horribly slow. Zero multi-tasking. Screen resolution was very low compared. Hardware wise, it was a real improvement. I'm running at 1GHz now with CM7.
In the software front, I really like, and prefer, how Android handle things. Apple is too control freak. I want emulator and ****!
But I have to say that the lack of proper backup in Android is really lame. iTunes can be really slow, but at least it does a proper sync and backup.
There is absolutely nothing like it in the Android world. Google has to improve its game!

I have never had an Iphone and will NEVER get one Android is the way forward
Used to have a 3g, and i hated it.
I love the openness of android, and on the hardware side the O2x just blows all the iphones away.
Whar ROM are you using? Since my O2x is way faster than my old iphone, and my buddy's iphone4

I just bought an iPhone again, even though this phone has great potentiel. It just lack the commitment of LG. I tired of trying out new roms every second day, to get it running as it should from the start. It's a great piece of hardware, but the hardware is only as good as the software running it.... Goodbye LG Mobile it was a laggy experience knowing ya
Thats one thing I will never buy and that is a IPhone. Don't like Apple due to there bringing old tech out and telling everyone its new. I mean come on Facetime, Video calling is years old but because Apple did it. Its AMAZING and been invented by aliens from a future race!.
The IPhone could have a 8 core CPU running at 3GHZ each, but will never give Apple my money knowing that there laughing at all the sheep jumping on the band wangon of every Apple product that ever gets released with the letter I in front.
There OS is closed and controlled. Android isn't the best OS about but it has Openness, yes that is a plus and a negative but I would rather buy a fone that is MINE rather than feeling that Apple have control over what I can and can't do.
I will give credit to Apple though because if it wasnt for them, we wouldnt be where we are now with technology. Also, Apple are good with updates but for me personally...
I would rather buy a £10 basic fone than a IPhone.
Google arent perfect as there just as bad because they want to make money.. The difference is, how they promote and allow different manufacturers to build upon there platform.
All Apple want to do is FORCE everyone Developers and Customers alike. Its a shame people don't see things like this and think everything Apple do is great. The IPhone 5 could have a 500mhz single processor and everyone will say its the best fone out there. With Apple announcing a game that looks like Nokias Snake and telling everyone its a brand new game.
Android is about CHOICE....
Apple is about CONTROL....
Just my personal opinion and understand its not what every thinks lol.

I would say, that i'm not an apple fan boy, it was just the phone i had before the O2X, and i was quite satisfied with it. The o2x was my first android phone, and i do like the google platform. For me, it was more the lg software provided with the phone, that made me go back. I know there are heaps of custom roms, and i've tried alot, but it always, seemed to cause some other problem, batterydrain/or just poor batterylife/reboots. And with cm7 which has become pretty stable, i still experienced the sound bug, and i use my phone as mp3 player aswell, so it got pretty annoying. I dunno if i'm gonna keep the o2x, I might, just to see what will be provided for it, in the next couple of months. The hardware inside the phone, is quite awesome, it's just sad that LG doesn't know how to use it, but they might end up getting back in the game.
^
its your first android phone and yet your speaking like you know how other android phones perform. you're telling us that it's Lg's fault that you are not enjoying your android phone but you haven't tried androids from Htc, samsung, motorola, and SE, im not an LG fanboy but this is my 2nd phone from them and so far im very pleased. I've been using lots of android phone and my O2x is by far the best and the smoothest. battery life is just the same as my previous galaxy S but 3x better than my desire HD.
i did have an iphone 3GS but the restrictions and the boring and inefficient UI brought me to android. and i hate i-tunes. i hat steve jobs pushing me to use -itunes like im some kind of illiterate uneducated old man. and im 22 years old.
why can't i just use my 3Gs just like any other storage device. drag and drop into a folder and then bam!
I don`t miss my iphone 3gs at all!
Love my o2x as it is. I would not trade my o2x for iphone 4 even for iphone 5 when it comes!
My wife just switched from iphone 4 to galaxy s2 and she loves it as well.
Simpler to use, drag and drop music, backups, possibilities, great apps as well, amazing support from devs, much more customisable, fun to use and great deal of learning about linux if you are into modding. You can do crazy **** with it as well: runs nmap, metasploit, backtrack 5 and so on...
I had an iphone 3g / 4 before this. I switched to this phone and i sold both the iphones.
Reasons why i like android more than ios:
- Itunes sucks! Seriously, i hate that program so much.
- widgets
- downpullable status bar ( and dont come up with sbsettings, because thats not part of ios)
- theming
- custom roms which actually add new features to your phone
- google synch, i love being able to nvflash this phone to 0 and install a custom rom afterwhich you just sign up with the google account and all the contacts and applications are back. Again, F#ck i tunes.
- iphone feels small,really small.
Things i like about iphone:
- They work 100% out of the box
- All software is/feels the same
- research has shown that people with an iphone have more sex than people without one. Works out well for me, i just say mine is better than the iphone

Well i'm a android noob then Well my experience is that the lg launcher is pretty laggy, compared to what i expected from lg 2xspeed which it's called in some countries. And yeah you can install other launchers, but for me, a android noob, I would have expected the first hand experience to be alot better. I'm not agains android, i quite like the openess and the widgets. But for me the iphone forfill my needs more at the time being. But it seems that when the word iphone is writen, ppl go "bolistic". I'm not for or against the different platforms, that's why i also said, that i might keep the lg2x to see what it brings in the future, cause i like it, but i'm just disappointed with the software lg has provided. And yes i find it poor software, since for me, out of the box experience means alot, and that feeling didn't satisfy me at all. But that is just my oppinion!!! I didn't mean to start an apple/android war, since i like both platforms.
You didn't expect a android vs iphone war when you opened this thread? you're right, go back to your simple Iphone.

I did try iphone 4 before switching to android.
But damn it, Apple has got a really big plus on his side, i mean iOS just works. You just click and it works!
Look at the crappy thing that LG did, they almost copyed everything to apple, but they didn't learn that power is nothing without control. I personally cry when i see the shietty UI they implemented that's capable to make a Dual-Core lag lol.
I will just wait iphone 4s or 5 whatever is called to go back to Apple. I just gave back my iphone 4 cuz of the antenna-gate.

Who cares about iPhone5 ? It's outdated already

I don't get the crazy foaming at the mouth hype for the upcoming iPhone5 Unless I am missing something, it still is still very much going to be like the iPhone4, which was like the iPhone3, rinse and repeat...The iPhone1 was way cool and bad ass, but Apple seemed to stop innovation after that.
I am a very happy Nexus-S owner, but there are some really cool phones due out this Fall to be excited about. Windows Mango running on a Samsung Galaxy S II hardware device will be uber cool And the Nexus-Three with the all new next gen Android OS "Ice Cream" will also be awesome.
To me the iPhone needs major changes to get back into the game. Still just a screen full of app icons Ok they finally added a notification bar, about time. What about widgets ? Or total customization out of the box, without a jailbreak ? How about a 4.3" AMOLED screen ? I don't know, but to me the last few iPhone releases don't look radically different, just more of the same, with a few old tweaks added.

Apple is never going to take those requests and put them into a phone.
Let me explain how apple works.
1. Buy parts from other manufacturers
2. Built electronics using cheaply bought parts (not knocking build quality)
3. Sell updated electronic from first ever design at an extremely high price
4. Profit from all the fanboys raving over the same device only with minor changes
LET THE TROLLING BEGIN! ;D

I watched an Apple keynote about the iPhone 5 and showing the improvements and all. Before I saw the demonstration I thought the iPhone 5 would be like a whole new OS. After the demonstration it was the same tired old thing. I have an iPhone 4 and appreciate it for its simplicity and reliability and quality. But it is a tired system. Apple truly needs to move on to something new and fresh.
By the way, I love my Nexus S also. Just an excellent phone.
Your logic is sound more or less. But I could gurantee if apple released the iphone 5 that was exactly like the iphone 4 with only a cornea display as improvement, they would have the same if not more people buying the phone. When it comes to marketing, apple knows what they are doing.
They could sell someone a spoon for $10.
It would be nice to see something revolutionary spec wise like sgs2 from apple, it would warrent the pricing.
Of course the iPhone5 will have upgraded hardware, but based on the past four iPhone releases, the iPhone1 and iPhone4 are NOT radically different to the average joe blow, minor updates to the same tired OS. My sister-in-law, a huge tech geek, still uses her iPhone1 she bought in 2007, she sees no reason to upgrade to a new iPhone4, which doesn't look that much different to her. And she uses Mac Book Air's, and a MAC computer, etc...
I myself have owned the iPhone1 and iPhone3G, they were the greatest things ever back then, then a year after the 3G was getting stale and old to me, I saw the Nexus-One and never looked back, loving my rooted and custom ROM'd Nexus-S now, and looking forward to a Samsung WinMo 7 Mango phone on a Galaxy S II device or the Nexus-Three this Fall.
MIUI is proof positive that Android is superior
Loved the sex appeal of both phones I have owned but..... I got an ATRIX... will never return to iOS

Certainly sorry to hear android users give u such a hard time. Not that im taking up for them but over at the x10 forums I can see the same question asked on the same page 3 times with the answer in a post above, lmao. They are just frustrated that and ur chosen name prolly didnt help LOL
But by all means try an iphone and tell us about the experience or maybe even take a look at some reviews or read the forums of some android devices before going for the buy.

I understand you very well about the responses people get here in XDA. Mainly it comes from young people who don't really have much life experience. But I've learned to let it roll off my shoulder.
The iPhone does indeed just work. It's super reliable as long as you don't jailbreak it. But the Nexus S is Google's iPhone and is better, in my opinion, that than the iPhone for all-around usability. Just don't customize with different ROMs. You can root for the sole purpose of using certain apps that require root, and I did that to mine. But I didn't allow the process to retain the custom recovery image and I let it return to the OEM recovery image then relocked it. I have a Nexus S that is completely stock in every way but is rooted to let me use root apps, which is all I care about in rooting.
The iPhone has a simpler video calling interface than the Nexus S. But once you get the right app set up on the Nexus, it is pretty much super simple. Oh...and the iPhone can't be beat for battery life. It's purely amazing how long the battery lasts on my iPhone 4. That is something Android can't compete with. The BL of Android is just generally horrendous. The NS isn't too bad, though, once you run through a few charge/discharge cycles.

The iphone has their fair share of issues with firmware and updates. Once you start to mod and flash that thing, you're going to encounter the same issues you encountered with the Android.
If you want something that works out of the box, you have to just resist modding it..

I was pretty close to shipping the thing to mskip with funding to execute his protocol for nandroid...lol.
thinking over it, i despise apple, have since the eighties and with the new crowd of hipster d00ds ugh (i skipped sxsw).
no iphone for me...
just my 2 cents going out there...
I do love my android, it amazes me with what it can do and I learn to do new things all the time. it really grows on you. I love android, but iOS stole my soul haha. I think its the fact of having an iPhone, the "bandwagon" everyone is on, the "revolutionary" aspect, isn't very revolutionary. I'd say close to 50%? of us have 8 MP cameras, but if the iPhone 5 or 4G has one, everyone will think its the most amazing thing ever.
I have this discussion a lot with my friend, we both came from iOS, hundreds of jailbreaks, bricked devices, DFU mode nightmares, the whole nine yards. he went to windows, I'm on android. the latest we've done is build custom hackintoshes, so we dual boot OS X and win7, and I always find myself using apple... I supose its the simplicity of it and the fact that its so well known, the fact that there isn't 200 different devices. an iPhone is an iPhone, in a way it is revolutionary no matter what they seem to do, and I admit eventually I will go back to it for college, buy a Mac book air. they speak for themselves, and IMHO, I don't think apple will ever be less than number 1...

I use android and that is all i will use for the fact of customization and that i can do wateva the f*** i want to it. I have never been a fan of crapple products but i absolutely love the release of a new iPhone for 2 main reasons. The first is that, everytime apple releases a product, google releases their newest state-of-the-art product. Secondly, it gives me another chance to show my friends that my phone is still better than theirs.

I was a happy iPhone owner of the first two generations, I have just moved on, found it getting stale with hardly any changes, besides the obvious hardware upgrades yearly, it is the app drawer always open look I can't stand, plus the "toy" Fischer Price look and feel of the settings and icons, feels more like a chick phone or non techie phone, more for the average Joe blow.
I think both platforms are great.
I had an iPhone all the way up to 3g. It was an awesome device for it's time. It worked right out of the box with little to no setup. iTunes had a ton of apps to choose from and once jailbroken you could change the theme and do a few other nifty things.
BUT... it was god awful slow - I never had 3g speeds in my area, and even back to stock was a pain to have to wait... and wait... and wait for it to do ANYTHING.
My buddy got an iPhone 4 and although it is sleek and it runs great - I wasn't super impressed - it was the same ol phone but now had a front facing camera.
You were still stuck with the limitations of what Apple allowed you to have - no expansion, no switching out the battery, and no control over on how your phone looks/feels/tweaks etc...
I received a Samsung Captivate for my birthday. The screen is gorgeous, I had access to the battery and could even add memory! I didn't miss the front facing camera.. and the back camera is decent.
But right out of the box I had to come here and flash a custom ROM. This is a blessing and a curse. I had to spend a lot of time (ok hours) to ensure I didn't brick my brand new device.
Skip to today and I still have the same phone for over a year. Still snappy, the screen is still gorgeous. And now I have my choice of ROMs that I can easily and quickly flash to my device. Currently I run MIUI - which to me is a blend of awesomeness... of both IOS and Android
Either way... Apple designs a great device which is designed to be "thrown away" for the next model (which has been their business model for years now.) Its a great business plan.
That and since they (Apple) spend so much time with marketing and design of a "great" smartphone - the sheeple eat it up. I'm not knocking folks who get the device. It will work out of the box and you don't have to **** around with it for hours.
I personally prefer Android devices - I get to do what I want with them and I live with the bugs. As long as it's stable enough to make phone calls, send/rcv txts, and I can check my email - I'm good.
