[Q] Honeycomb layout for apps on Note? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know how (if it's possible) to have certain apps default to their Honeycomb layout on the Note? Gmail, Google Music, and Pulse are my biggest wants when comes to having the Honeycomb layout on my Note.

I think I may have figured out the answer to my own question. If I remember correctly, I doubt that the API of 2.3.x supports the "tablet" features of apps designed with Honeycomb in mind.
Maybe this will change once we get ICS though!

Well.. Netflix App is layed out like a tablet...
Some apps use two parameters to determine if to layout as tablet o as phone..
One is the resolution.. Like, I believe, Netflix. A WXGA resolution is almost always a tablet resolution. So the app will layout out as it..
The other parameter is screen pixel density... The Note comes predefined at a 320 dpi, which is a High Pixel Density (hpdi) as seen in apps. The galaxy Tab 10.1, for example has listed a 149 dpi which is either low (lpdi) or medium (mpdi).
So the apps which have a lpdi or mdpi layout defined in code (for Tablets) can show like that.
You can actually change the dpi value that apps "read" from the device by rooting it and with some apps like LCD Resolution (or changing the required file in /system)..
So while the Note has ~300dpi, apps (and Home, and app drawer, and all) will show as ~200 or whatever number you want..
I changed mine to 240dpi to take advantage of the High Resolution and read more onscreen (instead of just view a higher pixel density for icons).. and apps like Opera Mini show as a tablet...
-----------------------------
Of course there are just a few apps running on gingerbread and with tablet layouts.. This will all change a lot with the ICS update in March; and we will be able to view Tablet layouts for a lot more apps..

I agree the Note doesn't use the whole potential of such huge screen software wise. All apps work in phone mode not in tablet mode. Changing screen resolution helps a lot with certain apps but then it gets really hard to use the UI which gets also smaller. I wish there was a way to change screen resolution for specific apps while leaving the rest at default resolution but i already know this is technically not possible at all. I hope our Notes could reach their full potential with next official ICS update ... I'm already looking forward to flash it !

Personally I'm just hoping that ICS will bring the best of both worlds really. Just waiting for a stable release of CM9 baby!

[Q] DPI in cyanogen 7

I hope someone knows the answer to this...
The DPI of the nook color is rated for 169dpi, yet the build.prop has it set to 161.
Changing it to the hardware correct value even solves some little graphics bugs. Like the "line on notification bar"
So why does it not match HW

Note that lcd_density is an integer value only. Additionally, when using mdpi, 160 is the default lcd density. Any other lcd density with mdpi involves interpolation. If you compare 160 and 169.x you can see that the images used for icons are significantly more blurry at 169.
The reason I chose 161 instead of 160 was to workaround a Market bug that caused the my apps list to fail to load. In my limited testing it seems Market 2.3.4 may have fixed the issue. If so, I plan to switch back to 160 which has the best image quality and best app compatiblity with the exception of Google Maps. However, 160 will need more testing with the latest Market to make sure the "my apps" list is completely fixed.

The problem with densities greater than 160 is the interpolation that must happen. I just checked for good measure and the icons are definitely not as sharp. Additionally, you will see artifacts from the interpolation such as gradients on the Gingerbread keyboard and the notification drop down.
In my testing I saw no difference in font rendering.
Keep in mind that another motivation for moving to 160 is that afaik, all apps scale properly to full screen. Any deviation from the mdpi standard 160 causes some apps not to scale to full screen. An example is Google Reader. If you click on an article to read, it will give you a libwebcoreview but it does not scale to full screen at >160.

You can use 169. Despite what people think, 160 is the best value to use for the Nook. Anything other than 160 means extrapolation or interpolation must take place. This is why nearly every HDPI phone uses 240, not 231 or 248, despite their real world DPI. However, there is a bug in the Android Market @ 160 on tablet size screens. For now I have it set to 161 to get around that bug. I don't use 169 because icons and such are more blurry due to the extra extrapolation needed. Until Google fixes the market there isn't a good DPI for us to use. Each has its own problems, 161 has a line in the notification bar but sharp icons, 169 doesn't have a line in the notification bar but has blurry icons....etc
Dalingrin, are you aware of any ill effects from running lower DPIs, such as 140?
That's where I've had mine for months, and I love it. Then again, I'm also running at 1920x1080 on my 15" laptop.
I love this forum!
Thankyou for a clear and logical answer I couldn't get anywhere else!

Sorry for necrothreading, just wanted to point out that Market 2.3.6 (from gapps 0613) still has a problem with My Apps @160dpi. :/

[Q] can we change the resolution of Gnote to 600*1024 (just like galaxy tab)

hi friends...
as we all know gnote has 800*1200 resolution
its quite big there are many application which doesn't fit on screen properly
i hv galaxy tab also, all apps fit perfec on screen
(i know there are some density changer on market but they alll need root to do so
but i dont want to root my gnote)
so plz tell me how can i decrease my resolution to 600*1024
and if it can be decreasd is there any prob with apps (like apps goes out of screen)
thanks
sorry for my english
Any one plz
newhunt app, spb mobile shell is not displaying in correct way
plz any thing that can solve my prob
It's impossible to do this. You should just root it and change the density.
Has anyone tried it???
I think if I do so.... main menu gonna has some kind prob because it has 5*5 icon set
Tell me if I can make it 5*4
Is there any way to do this
Thanks in advance
The Resolution is a physical attribute of the screen - you cannot change it by software. You could probably emulate a different resolution but it would look unsharp and crappy.
Instead you should do what SilverHedgehog suggests and change LCD density - search for LCD density to find out more.
I use launcher pro, and there is a option to change rows/columns to your desired number, don't know if this helps, it's obviously dependent on hour launcher, but thought I'd chime in.

If you have a laptop, or a PC with an LCD monitor, try setting the resolution to something non-native and marvel at how crappy it looks.
Then consider how your Note's screen would look if you could do the same.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks guys for your precious suggestions
Actually I hv galaxy s2 and galaxy tab n both has perfect screen resolution
All apps working perfect... no screen resolution glitch in apps working
I think I should wait for ice cream sandwich update
Thanks again
Feel free for More suggestions

[Q] ICS Tablet UI

Hi all!
I'm a big fan of Windows/Honeycomb UI. I've always wondered to boot honeycomb on my smartphone, and I'm now interested how to use ICS tablet UI in my Galaxy S.
I've tried to change dpi (teamhacksung's ICS). I used 120 value, and system tried to switch into tablet mode, but only partially - notification bar disappeared, desktop switching is tablet-like (3D) now, and some apps switched into tablet (I suppose so), but nothing more.
I'd be happy to just feel the "honeycombish" interface, even only for some fun, and you guys?
i gave this a go myself, i was messing around with the DPI settings and realised certain parts of the UI were scaling and changing. But when i set the value to low my status bar was constantly crashing. I just going to assume perhaps a few changes in the code may be needed to make the ICS tablet UI function properly on a mobile device.
Thats right. I'm interested why there is noone who started developing such mod. There was a lot of ports and fun about honeycomb on phones, and now is just a pure occasion to feel it on mobile device in all it's glory! It would be a great fun to mess with tablet UI on my I9000.
Anarkia had created one,am using it currently. Go to android development and look for aokp b33 by anarkia. Or go direct to the file location http://www.mediafire.com/?88ixkz88i...m,k7k983ibfaqky89,st7y71d1dcrjg,62on90o85pb6h

FYI,anarkia already stopped dev on tablet ui,but his alpha version for me is use-able.
Peace.

[Q] Font Size option

Hi guys, I am currently on ICS Stunner and in settings>display there is an option to change font size, which i set to small and is perfect for the note screen.
I can't find a similar option on any of the Samsung ICS roms i have tried, meaning fonts are HUGE and does no justice to the note's screen size or resolution.
Is there any way to manually change the font size without changing overall screen density?
I really want my s-pen features back and this is the only thing that's keeping me on AOSP.
Spare parts doesn't change overall font size, best thing i've found is https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwxLDIxMiwib3JnLnBieGVzLmZvbnRzaXplIl0
My problem with this app is that it doesn't support custom fonts (or so the comments seem to suggest) and i think i read somewhere that this app just installs the default font at varying sizes, something which i could do myself in a few minutes without spending money on a useless app.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
EDIT: I have also seen this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.bfont&hl=en but it seems to have odd bugs on the Note.

[Q] DPI change, more apps in a row on the screen, etc... :)

Greetings, lovely xda community!
I am very happy with all the solutions and innovations I find on these forums.. I am on Ultimate v5 at the moment..
Lately, caught more of the DPI changing texts, from 320 to 240..
But, apparently these is DPI change for apps and for the whole screen of the Note..
So, since my understanding is limited, what I hope to be able to do is to change general DPI of the screen, so that I would be able to put more apps per one homescreen.. I mean, I like Note`s big screen real estate, but there is too much empty space between the apps icons, so maybe something like 6x6 would be better than the usual 5x5... (hmm. I wanted to add attachment of my screenshots of the present state of my screen and homescreens/app icons, but none of the message edit and attachment buttons do not work )..
Anyway, I tried some dpi changers and density changers from Play store.. Boy, I barely managed to get the phone working normally again.. I just made the keyboard pop up with massive numbers and only upper 30 percent of the normal keyboard..
now back to normal..
so, how can I do it? I do not need to run tablet apps,so I do not need dpi change that allows me to download tablet apps from play store..
I would like to fit more icons on the homescreen...
How is that done?
By the way, I did google and search this forum, but it mostly speaks about dpi change for apps..
And ok, there is the "edit build prop", but is that what I need for my intentions, and how can I do it.. and possible negative consequences?
Thanks for stopping and answering!
Peace out...
Hi there, some apps look better in certain dpi modes than others.
I suggest you look at the rom "paranoid android 3 build by beerbong" in the original android development section of the n7000 forum at xda.
Its an aosp rom (google android without the samsung stuff) and it allows changing the dpi of the whole phone (phone, phablet and tablet mode) and changing the dpi of apps alone.
Its a work of art and i suggest you take a look at that rather than messing around with buildprop editors. Goodluck!
