[APP] [Themed] NS4G MMS with Autosplit DenverG/1Dynasty Themes - Nexus S Themes and Apps

**Make a Backup**
This is AOSP's mms.apk from oICS with AutoSplit for NS4G.
ICONS:
If you want to mix and match Icons, it's really easy to do and you don't have to decompile/recompile or anything like that. So I'm going to give you instructions on doing so rather than put up 15 or so versions of the same thing with different icons Go Here to see the instructions and to download the Icon Zips.
1Dynasty has created about 20 or so themes now so he's given me permission to include his many themed MMs apks, so this thread is going to get large quick. But here we go...
1Dynasty also got a hold of the information we needed to get the border lines out of this thing - which translates to GTalk as well. I'm going to update this thread throughout the day and probably tomorrow as well, as I get screenshots and such to put up.
If you download one of mine, you can thank me if you'd like. If you download one of 1Dynasty's, head over here and spank his like button At this point, this is a collaborative effort
So I'll start with my first borderless version, this is based off of the version I put into HoloBlue, I made a few subtle changes and removed the borderlines.
If you'd like to have vertical lines seperating the messages, here you go - grab HoloMMs_v1.1.zip
Go HERE to grab all of 1Dynaty's Themed MMs apks

How to make a backup zip (return to stock)
You can make a backup a couple of ways, either make a flashable ZIP with your original APK in it, or use an application like Root Browser/Explorer to rename the original APK.
I wrote this with mms.apk as an example. However, you can use this method to make a backup of any system app...
To make a flashable backup...
1. Make of copy of the ZIP file you downloaded. Name it MMS_Orig.zip (or something similar)
2. Use Root Browser/Explorer and navigate to system/app and copy mms.apk to your SD Card. Copy mms.apk from your SD Card to your desktop.
3. Open the copied/renamed zip file. Open the system folder. Open the app folder. There, you'll find the APK.
4. Right click on the apk and pick Delete. Take your original APK and drag and drop it into the system/app folder from the zip file.
To make a back up file...
1. Use Root Browser/Explorer and navigate to system/app and select mms.apk and choose to rename it. Rename it to mms.apk.bak.
2. To return to stock, use Root Browser/Explorer and navigate to system/app and delete mms.apk and then select mms.apk.bak and choose to rename it. Rename it to mms.apk.
3. Reboot.
Backup Apps...
1. Find and use an app like Titanium Backup to back up your stuff....

Yep. AOSP hooked us up with the autosplit for his oICS ROM. I should add that to the OP...

haha I was actually planning on doing something like this, very nice and thanks
Sent from the other side of town.

Nice. Thanks!
Edit.....up and running on beezy's AOSP 4.0.3 rom. Looks great. If its alright, I'll post a link over there.
Long days and pleasant nights............

Probably a dumb question, but will this work on CM9 alpha 18 nightly?
Thanks

Wow looks great! The send icon is a little dark tho. Also would be cool if you could make the bottom bar in messages dark like the top one. Thanks!
Edit: I also noticed the no contact picture icon in the phone app is darker. I think the white one in the mms app is a bit overpowering. Might it look better with the darker phone app icon?

Noob question(s):
So you are saying the mms.apk in oICS has auto-split built in? I am not interested in the themed colors, but I would like an auto-split stock MMS for the ROM that I am using. So can I just harvest the mms.apk from the oICS files, and then push it to my system folder and overwrite the one that is there? Is it 100% stock other than the auto-split feature? I didn't see autosplit mentioned in AOSP's OP, so I wasn't aware of it even when I was using that ROM for a few days.
Sidestory, I tried once to take stock MMS and add auto-split functionality myself by editing some values in an XML file... and it should have worked I thought, but for whatever reason it didn't. Probably something to do with me not knowing how to sign an apk. :-(

Search aosp's posts in his thread. He posted the mms.apk separate from the rom. It's not included in his last version yet. I'm using it on a Pete's rom and it works fine.

*EDIT* I'm afraid it's part of the keyboard... I'm going to crack that open now.
*EDIT 2* In the phone app, when you search contacts, the cursor is white, so maybe it is part of mms.apk...

Themeing for Slide

I remember when I had my myTouch, you could essentially pull the framework-res.apk file, modify it using a program like 7zip which keeps the file verified, then push it back to the phone.
It was nice and easy changing the graphics. Was wondering if anyone's tried this with their Slide so far? I know sometimes (only if done wrong) it could cos infinite boot = nandroid. Not sure I want to try it just yet, anyone out there doing any themeing so far? If so, how'd you do it?

Im working on one right now...i got the red slide but it has no red themes to speak of...the Fuzzy_Kittens one has a kindof a red theme to it, but all the selectors and highlights and button_press's are all still blue, and its UGLY. so im working on eradicating all the blue, in favor of red.
For the most part its the same as themeing for the G1. There's a LOT more apks in /system to make changes to, and ive found that theres TWO frameworks to take care of, the normal android framework-res.apk, and the also in /system/framework there is com.htc.resources.apk, which is apparently htc's version of framework-res. it contains all kinds of images called common_<whatever>.png and this is where i found the files that make up the default "Nest" theme. all the other themes that you can choose for the Slide are in .apk form and up until we had root i was modifying and installing the apk's to theme this puppy, but i could never find the .apk for the default theme...well thats why, the default theme is in com.htc.resources.apk, and its the default espresso theme, not a tmobile theme.
Im still working on my theme, its not ready yet, i just had yesterday to work on it, and ive made some progress, but i still have to get a generic 2.1 ROM to build so i can extract the xmls from it to inject into the ROM to change colors that are coded like progressbars, white backgrounds, etc. so whenever i get time for that ill be rollin...then i wanna try to get colorchange.jar to work on SlideMEROOT2 so i can change the clock and notif. text and stuff...alll in due time!

Honestly you're kinda right, I do come off sounding like a **** a lot...sorry didn't mean for it to come out that way...
anyway yeah you can do it without deodexing, I'm just using winrar to extract the whole ROM to a folder, then I go into and extract all .apks using 7zip (winrar doesn't recognize .apk files, you hafta rename them to *.apk.zip, but 7zip works on .apks without renaming them at all). Then I just modify or replace whatever images then inject them into a copy of the ROM .zip and resign and reflash...works great for me!

So if I already have cm6.1.1 installed, can I just install the Gingerbreadxml.rar and framework-res.apk for the theme to work? Or do I have to reinstall cm6.1.1 with GM theme built in? Thanks
You could, but I would just flash the rom zip over what you have as it has a few extras like the gingerbread browser and phone apk.
Nice find, brswatt. Finally a full theme that doesn't break my tethering. Updating my thread to point to this one.

You could, but you wouldn't have the gingerbread dialer.
So just flash the whole thing. It doesn't hurt.
Then just put the xml on your card.
Here is a LiveWallpapers.apk to adb push or include in that rom before you flash. I replaced the cyanogenmod wallpaper with the nexus s wallpaper.

Well, when the flashable zip thread pops up in the themes forum, you can link it there, or I'll link it in the first post.
edit: I posted it here
wow, many thanks. Im going to try out right now
I put the gingerbread.xml in the cmparts.apk, so we don't need to save it to sdcard/cmtheme.
About the flashable, by the time you run the cleanup.sh, /system might be not mounted. Nevermind, files will be overwritten anyway. But I still think files delete and set-perm should be done within update-script.
EDIT: File updated. Sorry I didn't know it only loads internal theme files that contain the word "STOCK".
Nice theme, but is there a way to get the old notification pull down back? I like the dark themed pulldown better.
Edit: Nevermind...the CMTheme changed it.http://media.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon6.gif
brswattt, I fixed the framework-res power notification dropdown icons to all black:

There is a semi easy way:
-Grab your ORIGINAL framework apks that you'll be editing from \system\app
-Use 7zip to extra the apk to a folder and name it something like "TO-BE-MODDED"
-Grab the .apk from a themed version you liked and do the same steps as above but make the directory something like "FROM-MOD"
Within the FROM-MOD folder you'll have a lot of images and XML files... **DO NOT COPY XML FILES**
Transfer all the images to your TO-BE-MODDED folder and overwrite it. You can then .zip up the contents of that folder and change the extension to .apk and overwrite your \system\app .apk by using Root Explorer or adb push
**ONE THING TO KEEP IN MIND IS YOU FACE THE POSSIBILITY OF FC'S IF YOU JACKED SOMETHING UP**
There's also a tool called APK Manager that will use adb pull if you know the apk you need or you can drop the apk in a working folder. It will then extract contents, allow XML to be edited, zip it back up, and even zipalign it
P.S The reason you copy XML files is because they can change colors, links, and behaviour of the ROM and will normally be the culprit for FC's if you overwrite or edit something improperly.

Adb push to /system/app/Vending.apk
Make sure you delete the com.android.vending-1.apk in /data/app/com.android.vending-1.apk
You can also flash this if you put it in a flashable zip compatable with your clockwork; just take a zip folder you previously downloaded and delete the app or apps that are in the app folder of the zip and copy the Vending. apk to it and flash.
Here's a link to a buddy o' mine's thread, that has Black transparent facebook, gingerbread keyboards, and such.

Less Transparent, Inverted Gmail.apk
Hey Deciple -- I've been using a slightly less transparent version of the new Gmail and wanted to share. It makes visibility a little bit easier in the mail screen:
Installation is the same as above: goes in system/app/Gmail.apk
I'm pretty sure the opaqueness (or opacity) in this apk is controlled by a transparentish png.
But here's some screencaps of the Gmail apk you posted versus this more opaque version (on my setup).
Credit goes to the folks at Inversion Conversion on Droidforums, not me.
I think we should have a Transparent/Inverted apps section too, cuz they look soo much better than the stock.

Ya - you can do it with Root Explorer.
With the Gmail.apk: download it, save to sdcard.
Open Root Explorer, navigate to sdcard
Long-click Gmail.apk, Copy.
back out to root folder, go to system, then app
(this is what I do.. just to create a backup)
Find existing Gmail.apk, rename to Gmail.bak
Paste the new Gmail.apk in that folder.
Find it, Long click, select Permissions
Under "Read" Check all 3, under "Write", Check ONLY user, under "Execute" uncheck all of them.
4 boxes checked, total. So it reads: rw-r--r--
Then exit, reboot if you want, and you should be set.

Hey yeah that looks good man, I personally like the clear glass look, and I use a dark wallpaper too so I have no problem seeing my messages, however you do propose a valid suggestion and I agree that we should have a transparent /Inverted thread.
I can throw some inverts on here .

Is there any way to do this with root explorer? Or any chance someone could put these in a zip or a little more instruction of what the op was talking about...adding to a previously flashed zip? Sorry to be such a noob, but I deleted both and can't figure out how to get them back

Ok.........What you do is , If you ever downloaded a flashable zip, that has a market in it or any other app for that matter, that you know is compatable with your version of clockwork, then you open it up with 7zip, then you should see a folder called meta-inf and system. Open the system folder and there should be another folder in there called app. Open that one and delete whatever's in there (after you've presumably copied and saved the entire zip If you want to keep what's inside)and replace it with the app or app's you want to flash.
Awesome Market...... But i have 3 small issues LOL If i knew how to fix them i so would. So i hope you can help :-D
Could u Captalize the "M" in the first pic and change the text to white?
The seccond pic has a weird blue bar
and the third is the comment area~
Again Thank you for all your hard work!

1. +1 I have no green in anything on my phone, white would be great.
2. -1 this is cool its to show you that there is more in the description, fade effect.
3. -1 I think the comment area when you more should be white BG so its easier to read and rarely used.
@Deciple I was wondering if You could make a gmail version same as you have it (Transparent) but make the text another color than green (not a fan of green), Maybe White main text and blue "from" text, just like in the stock Samsung email app.
Managed it problem solved
HELP!!! After i deleted com.android.vending.apk in /data/app/com.android.vending.apk no more market at all. Tryed to flash it and still nothing please help

I like the clear look for these apks. Does the gmail version allow for the automatic download of the pictures in the email?
Is it possible to use these apk in a mdpi 320x480 device like htc magic/mytouch 3g?

Same Problem here!
Had to restore my recovery.
Tried a lot of different things. Like ad push, adb install.
Vendig apk was under /system/app, but wont show up as runnable app.

transparent facebook widget.

I haven't been able to find the latest version of facebook with working transparent widget mod, anyone know how to do it or where to find it?
You mean with MetaMorph ?

metamorph has not been working with my facebook, it acts like it does, then it's still not transparent, so what I've done is asked (and gotten) someone better with APK modifying to just upload a modded APK that I push to system/app which works, but I'm now on a pretty old version and can't find the newest one.
I'm on a CM7 2.3.5 ROM, you gotten any metamorph mods to work on the latest facebook?
hey orangekid.
my theme has a transparent widget (partly i guess with white on the bottom, dark on top.) anyways...my point is with cm7 is pretty easy. though you need to decompile apks to get the .9.pngs to work again - that may be what you are running into. if you just drage them and edit them and copy back to the apk things never worked for me.
to be honest, it seems from your questions of late, you need your own theme! can you compile/decompile?
(and btw, my latest version will be out later tonight...)

lol, so true! Because now I'm trying to get a version of your theme but with different icons for contacts and stuff.
I have not compiled/decompiled APKs before but if there's a decent tutorial out there I learn very fast, do you know of one? Can't be too hard.
I'd love to make my own theme instead of continuing to ask other devs to do it, lol.
*Before you try his theme (I know you will either way ), I've spent a few minutes trying to modify it. Try the apk attached and tell me what happens.
*Edit3:
*to have a fully working widget, just uninstall any previous version (even if you have the latest) of facebook and install the apk normally without pushing.

P.S. (you need to push the app to "data/app/" and not install it normally.
P.S. (Backup yours first, because you may not like it )
Edit:
I just tried it on my phone, it's true that the background has gone transparent but some side effects have arisen:
1- hitting the "What's on your mind?" Forces close Facebook, also hitting the share button does so too.
If you want the widget only to view status updates and go left and right, it is good for doing so. Otherwise try his theme (I know you already did )

to answer your other questions - if you install an edited apk, once it upgrades you will lose the edits. and will have to start over. which is fine, but just so you know. tis why i like cm7 and themechooser.
you asked for links, here they be. now, i am a complete novice at using terminals, etc. i learned from reading and asking questions and found a system that works for me.
two tools - apktool and apkmanager:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=640592
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701
a very easy way to install apktool:
http://www.miui-au.com/add-ons/apktool/
i used this set up. it works flawlessly.
the bible of CM7 theming:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964391
read the above. it is a must. really everything is laid out there.
my system (convoluted, but again i figured out a way and am sticking to it)
1- i decompile using apktool (cmd prompt --- apktool d ***.apk )
2- edit things. note: use photoshop for .9.pngs (only program that will work - paint.net, etc will not compile properly). or you can use 9editor with the sdk, but that thing is frickin' annoying
3- compile my theme (cmd prompt --- apktool b *** ) notice no ".apk"
4- then i move it to apkmanager and sign it
i guess you could do the above with apkmanager, but again, i figured out a system over days via trial and error and i am sticking to it.
now if you want to publish to the market, there is a bit more to do. let me know, and i guarantee if i figured it out (read: help from many people) anyone can.
cheers.
