[Q] Noob question - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi !
Sorry for my question, i am beginner in smartphones. I have i896, and i want update my standard android 2.2 rom to CM 7.1 (october version). Is it good idea?
+1
GTA III. v1.2 has fps drops. Why?

It's not a bad idea if you know what you're doing. Read the OP thoroughly before flashing.

Its a great idea. CM7 gets rid of all the bloatware plus allowing you to over clock to upto 1.7ghz. But first root your phone using super one click, install rom manager via market and flash clockwork mod recovery. Download the latest stable CM7 and place it in your sd card. Reboot into recovery and flash away
Ok, where did you get lost?

rom manager is worthless on the stock Galaxy S phones....especially on 2.2 which is what the OP stated he was on....

This is what I am (was) on so what works if CWM doesn't?

Cwm works...ROM manager doesn't, they are different.
Use Odin to flash a kernel that has cwm included in it. Grab the .tar version and put on pda slot in Odin. Then just boot into recovery (which will now be cwm) and continue on to flash the ROM.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1252642
I had that thread started earlier on. The process is similar for cm7 so maybe it will help

Rom manager doesn't recognize my unlocked captivate

I just bought a captivate. I rooted and unlocked it ( now t- mobile) . When I go to rom manager to make a recovery it doesn't recognize my device. Only gives option for i9000, epic, fascinate. What do I need to do to make a backup/ recovery?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
Unfortunately there isn't an official clockworkmod recovery for the captivate. You'll need to either flash a kernel with cwm already embedded, or manually load up cwm on your SD card. What stock ROM are you on atm?
Sent from my AOKP icy-glitched Captivate via Tapatalk 2
Sorry you sorta wrong on some things. There isn't official CWM for GB or Froyo. But there is for Eclair. Sounds like he is on GB at the moment. You are correct about having to flash a kernel with CWM in it.
I stand corrected...but yes unless your still on eclair or restore back to eclair, there isn't an official cwm

Yea, I am on GB 2.3.5 baseband UCKK4. I also have a vibrant.I am really surprised at how different the two phones are. I would like to put a custom rom on the cappy. What rom would you suggest? Kernel?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
Suggesting ROMs ins't allow because you will most likely get arguing. Flash Corn Kernel and try out some custom stock ROMs if you don't know what you're doing. If you have an idea. I suggest ANY of the ICS ROMs
I would like a stable ICS rom. PM me with any suggestions.

vcremoveboot is the revert zip for voltage control, in case you have unstable settings applied at boot.

[Q] Easiest way to CWM v3 -> v5

Hello everyone,
I had a quick search but couldn't find the answer so I do appologise if I missed it.
My current S has CWM v3 on it and I would like to upgrade it to v5.
What is the best way to do this? Thank you.
Flash a kernel with the CWM you want.
I see so it is that easy
Any urls to exactly which one I need and the way to do it - Really do not want to mess this phone up Thank you for your reply.
Well, assuming you are on Cyanogenmod 7.2, a gingerbread kernel would do.
[KERNEL] Semaphore 2.7.4 (CF-Root + Voodoo Snd v10 + OC/UV + BLN)
It comes with CWM v5.0.2.7
I am on stockginger bread rooted with cmw v3. Just got the phone. Does the fact I am not on CM 7.2 mean I need a different methoe? Thank you.

Is your phone a Galaxy Ace (s5850) or a Galaxy S (i9000)?
This is important because I've been giving you a link for i9000.

Just flash another kernel using odin. Devil is a good one to use. All the latest ones use cwm 5 but it doesn't reallty do anything the older one doesn't. I would stick to chainfire on Stock rom mate.
You have an i9000 with stock gingerbread.
Which version of GB?
Since you are on stock you'll be using ODIN to flash the kernel. Are you familiar with ODIN?
yes I have already gone this but the kernal was cwm v3 I need to find one with v5. And thank you for your replies and help
Sent from my M1001 using XDA
Well then, if you've flashed a kernel via ODIN before, then grab the kernel as suggested and flash it.
Check if CF-Root has cwm 5, I think it only goes to v3.

Best ROM/Kernel

Hello Galaxy S Community, I have just purchased a Galaxy S and its coming with android 2.1 stock. I wanna know, whats the fastest and most stable rom for the Galaxy S and whats the fastest and most stable kernel for the Galaxy S?
Edit: I just updated it to 2.3.3 JVN Via Samsung Kies but I am no noob with odin, i just wanted to update via kies .
For stock rom the best kernel is the Sempahore kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112908
Form CM7/MIUI you can you the glitch kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041532
There are most of kernels, but for stock rom the semaphore kernel is better

I definately dont wanna stay on stock touchwiz cause i dont like the interface. What do you think about the 4.0.4 roms? Does all the hardware work or is it in alpha/beta? What about ICS Kernels? Should i flash ICS or flash a Gingerbread rom (CM7, etc)? Sorry about all the questions but there are so many roms/kernels that I just have no clue which one to use.
You could try latest CM9 nightly with Semaphore 1.2.2 or latest mnics or Devil kernel.
After 3 or 4 circle battery charges I'd think it will offer to you good performance and good battery life, but I'm supposing it.
Try them and after that tell us about
I hope it helps you!
I m using ics333 no bugs, good ram management, good battery life my first rom after buying galaxy S

Flash the ROM with.pit, let it reboot then boot back to download, flash the root kernel, let it reboot and you are on rooted ROM, copy nightly, base, essentials and gapps to sd card, then follow instructions for flashing sequence, after, if you want semaphore download and flash that, make sure you use the s version as slim has the large ram patch

Please help- Urgent!

Hey guys, my friend has a i900 running 2.2.1 froyo. He hates how it is always freezing and wants me to root it and put CM9 on it. I swapped sim cards with him and did a nandroid on mine so i can restore after. So i have his phone
I was wondering is the process to get Cm9 running is the same as coming from gingerbread.(thats what my phone came with 2.3.4)
On mine i:
Flashed CF root with ODIN,
Booted into recovery and flashes Cm9 and an approprite kernel.
Just wondering if i can follow the same procedure as before. Help is appreciated, i dont want to mess this up.
Thanks.
Just upgrade to gingerbread using Odin...root with appropriate kernel using Odin...flash latest cm9 nightly in cwm...check out slim 4.1 as well.

I don't believe you can go to Cm9 from froyo...you maybe right but all the info you need is in the links I provided. I'm sure you'll find you're answer in the cm9 thread.
I gave it a quick look and it doesn't mention gingerbread. But if it were me I would since it might be more difficult to dig up a kernel for froyo

I see you have an i9000m and on Virgin - franchisee of Bell.
Follow these instructions
[HOWTO] Flashing CWRecovery to i9000m & upgrade to ICS AOSP 4.x ROM from any version
Branch off to whatever ICS rom you want.
You'll definitely need to be using the cm7-kg3 modem for any ICS rom going forward. That means after every new ROM flash you'll have to flash the KG3 modem. Once you are upgrading within a ROM, you won't have to re-flash the modem each time.
If you use a firmware from the first link I gave you there are firmware. with bootloaders.
The links contain everything you need...firmware....kernel to get cwm....Cm9....and radio zip

Thanks guys, im going for it pretty soon here. You guys are awesome.
For the first time in my life, kies just connected to a phone. I cant handle it. I think im gonna pass out in disbelieve.
Anyway... lol.
Can i just update to gingerbread kg3 from kies?
Yes, but you may have a difficult time finding a kernel with cwm for kg3.
×Slim Rom×
and now i cant get into recovery mode. Just download mode. I downloaded the stock firmware from samfirmware, and was gonna flash it with odin, but which file to i put it under? Its just a single tar ball
EDIT: For some reason i have to use power volume up AND down and home. Wierd.
I always use firmware from the link I gave you...just flash jw5 from link with 512 pit....then root with semaphore 2.7.4.tar from second link....easy.
×Slim Rom×
I will try that now. Cause im bootlooping with CF root.
After that you can flash cm9 in cwm...additionally slim 4.1...then slim common....then the Kg3 modem zip in cwm as well.

Okay so my friend has a Samsung captivate. He is on 2.2 and I would really like to help him root and install cwm and a stable cm9 build. I see a lot of one click methods but I'm not particularly sure which one to use... I have an s3 which to me seemed easier to root and install cwm. All this eclair, froyo, and gb things are hurting my head. And just driving me in circles. But if I had some direction it would be appreciated. I just want to know what I need to do to get ,root, cwm, and cm9 thanks ahead of time!

I don't claim to know everything but I do know this. Being that he is on 2.2 you will have to flash to gingerbread first and make sure whatever you flash has bootloaders included otherwise you will have a bricked phone at some point along your way to CM9.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
Go to that link and it will give you several one click options to get you to a variety of stock GB roms. Also for your intitial root there are several one click applications available that will get you fixed up you should just have to google them.
Yeah I'm used to having to flash new firmware, flashing cwm again then new Rom.that was on my old sensation. But thanks I will tell him to update to gingerbread via kies.then I will flash a custom kernel via Odin then just update to cm9
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Stickies also have some good instructions.
Okay so he just upgraded to 2.3.5 so am I going to need to install boot loader as well? or am I just going to use the one click tool
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
If he is on 2.3.5 GB already, root the phone and flash a corn kernel so he will have a working CWM
If he has kk4 gb 2.3.5, then he has the gb bootloaders. So all u need is to flash a kernel with cwm and then the Rom of ur choice copied to ur internal sd and u will be good to go. So see this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19425513&postcount=1

Yes GB bootloaders are the requirement and are even backwards compatible. You should be able to install anything from Eclair to Jelly Bean now without problem. But as the previous response states make sure you follow the directions for whatever rom you are using so you are less likely to run into issues.
