swap partition Q

i repartitioned my sd card with a 64mb swap,2gb ext2 and the rest fat32 using ra recovery. im running cyanogen 4.2.13. when i type 'free' into terminal it says 0 for total, used, and free. am i missing something? or do i need to "activate" the swap partition? TY
here you go
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=542899
remember search is your friend
i came across this great site about swapping: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Compcache
im wondering what other options others on this forum use and which one is the most recommended?
compcache
swap
or
backing swap
ty
backing swap seems to be the way togo, but i would like a professional opinion.
2GB its too much for an EXT partition.....i have seen (somewhere) that the recomended size its 512mb...not sure tought...
About the Swap...idk, but i like Compcache...some devs (like WG) says that their roms runs better without Swap.
EDIT:
Here is what i was talking about the EXT partition.
This was on [Guide] Partition your Sd Card, Upgrade to Ext3, and Install Apps2SD.

Partition Fat32/Ext2 with App2SD
Open up Apps2SD
It will show you a screen telling you that your card is not partition and you will have a sliding bar to choose the amount of space you want for an EXT2 partition
I suggest a max of 600mb for EXT2 space (I use 500mb)
Press Ok
You will get a Force Close screen DONT PRESS FORCE CLOSE PRESS WAIT
You will get a reboot message, Press Reboot
You now have a EXT2 partition

is there a specific reason to not have a large ext2 partition? i wanted to have plenty of room for both apps2sd and installing debian. im using this guide:
http://all-google-android.com/googl...verdale's-debian-boot-v-2-0-updated-03092009/
the thing i like about this one:
" this will run a full Linux distribution (Debian) on the Linux partition of your sdcard (EXT2/3/4). I have written the script to bind Debian folders to your regular folders, and thus give you access to the entire system while running Debian"

help with apps to sd

hi i needed help with apps to sd card i recently rooted my g1 to cm 4.2.14.1. i was reading that it does it automatically thru this mod if you have a partitioned sd card which i do but i notice everytime i download a new app my internal phone storage goes down. i was wondering if that was normal or if its only suppose to go down on the partition? im really noob to this who rooting process so please help!
Applications not only store information in the apk, but also other places, /data/data/ for instance.
Delete the partition then see how much space applications use if you want to compare the difference. It could also be browser cache and other things that store information on the phone memory.
Cyanmod rom will automatically do apps2sd if it see a new partition EXT2
You have to do that on your own.
The easiest way I found to do that is use amon_ra's recovery 1.2.3 instead of Cyans
It has an option in the recover screen to partition and add EXT2 .
Now im new to this I dont know how to increase the default of value of XXXmb in ext 2 .
So if some one can chime in and tell me in the simplest way how to change how big the ext2 partition is that would be great.
OP I hope I helped you if you need more help PM me.
Edit I figured it out.
Just use linux to partition ext2/3 and define how much space your sd2apps will use on ext2 partition.

[Q] Using APPS2SD after moving apps with cm7

Hi!
I'm facing disk space problems with internal memory on my samsung galaxy mini.
So I have moved lots of apps to SD by using app2sd and cm7 own moving capabilities.
Now I saw this apps2sd script by darktremor and want to give it a try.
I managed to partition my SD card to two different partitions and /sd-ext is mounted perfectly.
My question is before I run this apps2sd script does it interfere with already moved apps so that they get somehow broken?
I moved a lot back to phone memory (apps with widgets and auto startup) but the phone memory is so full that I cannot move all apps that were originally unmoveable without CM7. Do I encounter into troubles?
Running,
Samsung Galaxy Mini with tj_styles CM7 7.1.0 and OC 764 kernel.

Don't know about that ... But, it is always recommended to have app in internal storage if you are using darktremor a2sd... The dt a2sd and a2sd are diffrent and are incompatible with each other so only use either one...
You can move most apps to internal storage and backup remaining ones using titanium backup or anyother method then install/flash a2sd and then restore your apps again...
If you need help with installing a2sd read this...

Thanks!
I think I'll take full backup with titanium backup and then flash new cm7 with dt a2sd and then start to restore them.

[Q] Milestone CM7 sd-ext, caches and CM7

I know it was discussed a lot, but since things are constantly being updated i can't get a hold of what is working at the moment. I will be brief.
16 GB SD card, First partition is primary 14 GB FAT32, second partition is ext3 1 GB.
I am using Cyanogenmod 7 7.2.0 RC1 on Motorola Milestone. I also have androidiani open recovery and kabaldan's mmcfix module installed.
After the partitioning was complete (in card reader) i returned the SD card in the phone and booted to open recovery where I formated all caches and factory restored CM7 everything is clean.
Questions:
1. When I launch File Explorer (the one within the rom) SD-EXT on root is empty, no folders or anything, but if I launch terminal emulator and cd sd-ext then ls there they are. Why?
2. I play couple of memory intensive games (like Dead Space and GTA3), but since I have only 256 mb ram they often crash (without error) when loading a level or saved game (yes I have chainfire3D). Will moving dalvik cache and cache to sd-ext help free more ram so I can crash less?
3. What is the point of moving dalvik and cache to sd-ext and where can I find a guide how to do it?
Thanks.

1) The File Manager bundled with CM7 doesn't have ROOT access, which is required to read the files on /sd-ext. Try using Root Explorer, for example.
2) No, it won't. What will probably help you is to disable JIT (gives you more free RAM), install V6 Supercharger by zeppelinrox (reorganizes how RAM is used) and remove ChainFire3D (it only helps if you reduce the texture quality to 16-bits, otherwise it's just one more layer between your apps and the GPU).
3) The point of using sd-ext is to overcome the storage limitations of the Milestone (not its RAM limitations), allowing you to install more apps without using app2sd (which renders apps on the SD unusable when you plug the device to a computer).
I hope it helps (=
Disabling surface dithering also helps.
I tried 7.2.0-RC2 without V6 and it works great, plus no more side effects, like Maps "forgetting" pre-cached areas =D
Hi. I followed pontomedon's guide to partition my 8GB card with OpenRecovery (parted & tune2fs). So I got 1 GB ext3. And installed CyanogenMod 7.2.2.
But in the CM Settings "Use internal storage" is grayed out and says "This device doesn't have expanded internal storage". Has something gone wrong? What's the best way to confirm that SD ext is working?
If ext would work, would the phone's memory still be used fully first, and SD ext only after that, or how does it go? I've now set Install location to "Internal".
I've heard of S2E (simple2ext) app, maybe I'll try it next.

Your storage as in FAT partition on sdcard is working?
You can "mount | grep sd-ext" and "df /sd-ext" to check if sd-ext is mounted and how much space it has.
sd-ext is treated as internal memory. All user installed apps are moved to ext partition. Internal storage (data) is used for app data (configuration, etc.)
Thanks. Why does it show it as ext4. 8% is used... I guess it's working after all. Now let's install some games!
/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 on /sd-ext type ext4 (rw,noatime,nodiratime,barrier=1,data=ordered)
Filesystem /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 1K-blocks 936666 Used 70298 Available 816397 Use% 8% Mounted on /sd-ext
I installed Root Browser Lite and it shows the installed apps in sd-ext, also Dalvik-cache for those apps is there, which is good I think.
how to format?

Hi, my question is very close to this topic : when I try to install another rom I got all the old applications coming from the previous install. Is there a way to format the ext 2 in the same time we update or change CM?
Thx
Use -FuFu-'s MiniMod Recovery - it has an extended wipe menu, including ext-wipe.

With 2ndbootOR you can use "wipe_ext2.sh" from MiniMod by -FuFu, or any other script. Just copy file to "scripts" folder.
FuFu's latest OR is based on the 2ndbootOR, so it does everything the 2ndbootOR does, but it also has additional scripts. So it really worth a try.
Thx I'll update my second phone (I have not seen these answers before)

[Q] [Query] Issue regarding S2E

Hey guys, recently I have been using all sorts of rom's to try and sort out an issue I have been having, I have been using S2E on all of the rom's I have used, Only recently it has come to my attention that after a short period of time, if I reboot my phone, all setting's and apps have been removed from my phone.
The rom's I have used have been: Official CyanogenMod 7.2, Unofficial Jellaxy CyanogenMod 10, Unofficial CyanogenMod 9. All of which have lost their setting's and installed apps after using S2E.
My query is this, Has anyone else used S2E and experienced this same issue? And can anyone suggest a working Data to SD-Ext app that works and doesn't remove setting's..
Many thanks.
Th3GrimRipp3r.
There are many alternatives for s2e: link2sd, a2sdgui (along with darktremor script), cronmod scripts, etc.
The problem you experience with s2e might happen if s2e isn't installed as a system app. Since s2e moves every app on internal to sd-ext partition, it might move itself, so all apps on the partition have no way to launch (cuz s2e is in charge of mounting/managing the partition).
Try keeping s2e as system app, and make sure the partition is being mounted on boot. Also, overclocking can sometimes give that problem where the partition isn't mounted at boot.

I have always had my phone at 800MHz or less, I never overclock it.. In regards to S2E being a system app, I tend to install it as a regular app.. I will install it again and set it as a system app. If that doesn't work I will try Link2SD.
thank you for the fast reply.
