Is there a way to change the default action for when you press the button on the wired headset? I'd love to for instance start a new voice note with Catch or Evernote when pressing the button (if not in a call that is).
I've begun to get into Tasker but it seems a wee bit complicated. If anybody knows a simpler way, please post... Thanks!
Check out "headset button controller" in the market.
Instead of installing an app for this function, could we modify the value in a specific system file ?
Like this one : [MOD]disable Power or Home button screen wake

Is it possible to program one of the hot keys to be a phone mute/unmute button, or is there a need to create an app?
I'll check out if I can make an app out of it tomorrow unless anyone posts anything different. I made a key lock app for the PTT soft button. I might make it mute your call if you're in a call or lock your phone if you're not. Anyway, lets hope it can be done without an app or with an app and you'll have it by tomorrow evening. Do you have the Tilt, Tytn, or Vario?
Thanks for your prompt response. I have an unlocked TYTN II.
You might not have a PushToTalk button. Got any of the other buttons in mind? You can map it to whatever, and I'll check it out tomorrow. See my first post titled "First Post / KeyLock" for my keylock app and a link on how to map the PTT button. Other buttons should be similarly mapped.
Would like to use the green phone button for this purpose.
I'm interested in this too (I swear I live on concalls for work right now). Either the green button or the ok button on the side of the phone. But I'm curious, will the phone have to be "on" (ie: not sleeping) for this to work? Currently I use the reTOUCHed dialer and just go to Call Status screen and tap the mute / unmute toggle on the screen to do this (which works well since they are bigger buttons than the default dialer on the Tilt). But having it mapped to a hardware button would be very nice.
Was there ever any progress on this? I'd like to assign the PTT button to mute/unmute during a call. I am constantly on conference calls and having to use the touchscreen to do this is ridiculous.
I have an issue with My Diamond 2. But I know the same issue exists with the Diamond and the Touch Pro which I also had before. So hopefully would get an answer here.
I installed AE Buttons in order to re-map the END KEY so that Long Press on it will bring up the Comm Manager rather than the rather not useful to me HTC Quick List options.
I am sure others have the same issue.
Simply want to map the long press of the end key to something other than the default. Like the Comm Manager or some profile changer.
Seems HTC takes over that no matter what i set up in AE Buttons app.
Anyway around this?
Anyone figure this out yet...It is true HTC Long end take over no matter how you change it ie. via ae buttons, or start settings buttons it still does whatever it is set to do in the quicklist.
I want to make it launch camera on long press then could use it as shutter button since there is no hardware camera button.
Any help? thanks.
is it possible to give the search hardware key another function?
for example an app?
or i would love to have the on/off screen rotation function on it.
there is an app in the market that allows this but it is limited. it can only program one app to it, but you can make it any app you want. I have it programmed to the screenshot app, so i can take screenshots anytime i want without having to go back to homescreen.
the app is called "Button Shortcut". Depending on the app you want, there may be specific search shortcut apps in the market. I have one called "Call Button" and this programs the search key to also bring up the dialer to make calls since our nexus does not have a physical button for dial.
yeah that app is cool, but it only replaces the long press function of the search key.
is it also possible to replace the normal click?

Nope because the normal search screen can be handled by the active app.
I think in Cyanogenmod 7 you finally can do that.

in cm7, Settings > CyanogenMod Settings > Input.
You can set long press to custom application for the home and menu key
In addition, for the "search key" you can set custom app for both short & long key press.
For long press on Search button you can also use " LaunchKey " ... you can set any App you want or ... create a Menu of your favorite apps to lunch .

i've tried this and it works. and if my memory is correct you can change long press and quick press to 2 different functions
Do yourself a favor and get Tasker. Binding the search button to pretty much anything you'd want is just one of about a billion things you can do with it. If you don't want to spend the money, you can try an app called AutomateIt. I haven't used that one as much as Tasker, but it has similar functionality.
Some of my Tasker tasks are:
Automatically turn on WiFi when I'm in my apartment
Turn off bluetooth when I disconnect my headset
Automatically turn on the GPS when I open Google Maps
Automatically start Pandora when I plug headphones in
You basically give it a trigger (app launching, button pressed, incoming call, etc) and a set of actions to perform when that trigger is hit.
Hi, is there any way to change the action for home button and headset button do when hold, or double press. Currently, my home button bring up recent apps when hold and voice command when double press. The headset (JAYS4) does nothing when hold and play next music track when double press.
Thanks.
Hi, there is an app called Headset Button COntroller which will do what I believe you're asking.
Hi,
I am having difficulty getting something I would think easy to work on my Nexus for my car install.
I was wondering how people are getting tasker tasks to be triggered off keyboard hotkeys when using either their Joycon or a standard external keyboard.
It seems from research the way to do this used to be quick launch shortcuts (assigning search key + a letter) to an app or shortcut but it seems these do not work for me in android 4.4?
External keyboard helper lets you launch applications from hotkeys, but seems to give no way of launching tasker tasks.
This is really doing my head in! From youtube it looks like others have no issues doing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Well, the only thing I can think of right now is to use a Tasker Scene with a focused textbox to detect the keys. You will have to run this scene as a dialog, and deal with all the complications with that... (touch disabled outside of dialog, etc) but here's another idea.
You could use a mobile bluetooth keyboard (or any keyboard that has volume/brightness keys) and have a Tasker profile pick up a change in the ringer volume variable, this would give you 2 or 3 hotkeys (vol up, down, or mute). If you don't have a keyboard like that you could edit the Android keymappings under /system/usr/keylayout/General.kl to incorporate volume changes under some key.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
Good idea with detecting the variable changes! I'm using an Arduino Micro which emulates a keyboard so I will have no problem emulating them via buttons & changing the keyboard layout kl if nessesary. Thanks
I am currently working on the same topic: Here is my workaround for trigger a task with an external bluetooth keyboard.
create a task in Tasker
create an app of this task with Tasker App Factory
remap a key of the keyboard to the new app with External Keyboard Helper
Finish
Maybe this is helpful

1. With a bluetooth remote (Satechi BT MediaRemote) i want to switch between the homescreen by pushing a key. (launcher nova and tasker secure settings are necessary)
2. a tasker scenes (dialog) with different options should open by pushing another key. Navigation in the scene should do also with the Bluetooth remote (not yet finish).
The goal is an intuitive handling of the tablet ui in the car with less touch-input on the screen. Something like Audi MMI or BMW idrive.
In my opinion to find icon on the homescreen while driving is difficult.
Here is my current set up.
Nexus 7 (In dash)
Center console mounted volume dial with push to mute (Tablet>dial>amp)
(Not shown in the screencap is that the media widget is also in the Navbar and accessed via a softkey in the navbar)
The console dial was initially a USB 5 button mouse with key remapping but required the amp gain be cranked up which caused issues.
Now for full control you need the following;
(Some of these things can be eliminated with voice controls)
Media Control (Previous, Play/Pause, Next, Playlist, etc.)
Directional controls (Up, Down, Left, Right)
Action Controls (Select, Home, Back, Recent, Menu)
Phone Control (Answer, Hangup, Dialpad)
SMS Control (Full KB or voice to text using a noise canceling mic)
If you skip voice control and you don't count the dialpad or KB, you need 15 buttons or adaptive input based on what app is running but still need at least 5-6 buttons. I am not sure how involved implementation of adaptive input would be as I gave up after days of trying to get it just right.
With the Satechi BT MediaRemote, you can cover most of this by key remapping but have to remember what keys are what. The advantage of proper key remapping is that it removes the need for additional apps to get it to work.
Seeing that I'm not sure how complete of a setup you are trying to get, it's hard to offer anymore advice.
