So it still hasn't hit me yet that my Vivid is unlocked...but it is! Awesome!
Any who I rooted the Vivid right afterwards using Superoneclick root/another program (involving Zergerush) and superuser is installed and able to give out permissions to certain apps.
I immediately installed SetCpu which seems to be working fine but when I tried installing Wireless tether/WiFi tether/Barnacle nothing would budge when trying to connect devices onto my phone.
Am I missing a step?
Others on the same boat?
Thanks for any input!
EDIT: The Binary updater seems to be outdated BUT it has problems updating..?

Did you reboot after rooting it,
Yes. I already rebooted the device but to no success with Wireless tether =/
An issue with SetCPU?
I know my phone lost all phone and data connectivity when I used SetCPU and had my LCD Density set to anything under 220...
maybe it's related.
i tried ALL of the wifi tether apk's and NONE of them would work.. ultimately i just installed a different kernel and rom so i could just use the native app instead. works great.
It was kind of discussed here already.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1415240
I'm in the same boat. Installed different versions of the Wireless Tether for Root. Though my computer can connect, there's no internet access and my phone doesn't recognize the computer as connected (doesn't show up on the access control page). Any help?

Your best bet would be to install a different ROM and kernel and use the built in tether. Works fine on the few different ROMs I've used.
I just read a post from another Vivid thread that Wifi tethering does not work on a Stock Rom even if you are rooted. Wonder why that is?

It's because the phone is still "stock". The ability to use tethering is something that is built into other ROMs. At least for the built in app, that is. Never tried any of the 3rd party apps.

Hi
a shop has rooted my phone, but now i'm stuck. i wanted to wifi tether it, but this didn't work, i think it needs to be flashed with something like cyan but i'm lost with the language etc. i am on firmware 1.0, so i now have a phone that is rubbish.
i'm willing to pay for your assistance.
anyone?????
Maybe I can help
maybe I can help. I rooted my fone a few days ago and it's working fine. Just plugged it into my computer and tethering is also available.
I'm assuming you have a G1. To check if you actually can tether.
From your Home menu, Go to Settings-Wireless Controls- then select Internet tethering.
If the Internet Tethering option is not available then you may not have rooted it properly.
As a complete nub, I read, and followed instructions and rooted my fone with the cyanogen ROM and loving it.
DO AS MUCH READING AS YOU CAN BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING!

Hi Guys,
I'm experiencing a strange issue. The situation is as follows, I was running JP6 without issues and decided to try out some custom roms, so I followed the instructions and flashed DarKy's Rom (v6.0). The flash procedure went fine, the rom was installed without issues alongside CWM Recovery.
Since this flash my Wi-Fi on the device is no longer being used as an active connection on the phone. The phone scans the Wireless access point fine, it connects fine - Everything LOOKS normal - however no data is received on the phone. Every single data operation (market, web browser) just shows a no connection message!!
I asked in the Darky's rom thread and was told two things: 1) It is my router 2) This is a Kernel issue and to try alternative recovery/kernel and to try a wi-fi fix app.
I've tried to fix the issue and failed so far - I've even reset my router and re-configured it. I've now flashed stock JPY from SamsungFirmwares... Hence reverted everything and yet the Wi-Fi refuses to work!
Please assist if you can!! I can only think of: Could this be a channel issue? My router is set to auto channels and currently broadcasts on ch 1-3. Although I've only ever heard of channel problems when using > channel 10.
Secondly I've not tried this wi-fix fix app, I couldn't find it on the market. Can someone share?
PS: My previous post re this issue

I have used my desire to create portable hotspot to test the wi-fi and using another hotspot - the wi-fi works FINE!! I have a desire, a laptop, xtreamer and PVR connecting perfectly to this wireless N router. Moreover the router config hasn't been changed since flashing roms. It doesn't make sense!
I have checked the router logs - nothing is being blocked by the router - Quick System info pro also shows that once the connections is made to the home network - data is transferred, albeit a very small amount. I can't determine the cause of the issue? I did NOT wipe the internal/external cards between flashes, could there be redundant settings or config that the device is trying to use? I am at a loss.
This is a really bizzare problem. :s Looking forward to your input! From what I can see, this seems to be a config issue... but exactly where is escaping me!
Dont suppose you saved your original rom ??
Thats what i would be liiking to restore to the original rom that came with the phone and a full wipe .

Sorry if this comes off as noobish but is there anyway to flash over to stock Gingerbread (and eventually to a custom rom) w/o the use of Odin? I've tried to search but didn't really see anything that clarified this for me. My phone just doesn't want to work with ODIN at all...it will pick it up every once in awhile but only when the phone is powered completely on. I've installed, deleted, reinstalled drivers/kies etc. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me resolve this issue!

you can give heimdall a try, but if you are talking about a cwm flash then no, you cannot. flashing bootloaders in cwm is WAY more risky than using odin or heimdall.
My main issue is that I cant keep my laptop to recognize my phone in the first place...like I said earlier, I tried various drivers including the ones from Samsung and Softpedia...And whenever I do get it to respond, it wont recognize it in download mode at all...thanks though...the only thing that I haven't really tried was a new cable...will be purchasing one later...I feel so left behind on my roms lol. I was able to flash Froyo with no prob...now its so many out that I can't get my hands on...
I would try thee drivers from dg (designgears ) thread in development. It also might recognize better from stock also.

could there be problems with NET framework 4?

I'm in the same situation from time to time on my work laptop. Not sure it's gonna mather for your situation but i found that if i undock and redock the computer Odin then recognize the phone again when it goes foobar. (I only use the laptop usb port and not the docking station ones).
Just got a new Captivate, tried to load up some of my emulators on it. When I tried to install via ES File Explorer, it says:
"Install Blocked
For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android Market."
How do I get around this? Thanks in advance.
You need root or a custom rom
Depending on what Android version you're on, you can check Allow installation of non-Market apps in System Settings
it is running 2.2. Where in settings is this, I have looked and I don't see it.
Oh I don't think that works with 2.2. I think you will need to root your Captivate.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
bad advice as usual. root not necessary.
if you want to keep a stock phone, upgrade to the new stock att firmware for the captivate.
upgrade to att gingerbread. it has a setting for non-market apps. go to samsung site and download the update program (keis)
this is a feature of ALL rogers firmwares. Dont get me wrong, keis is garbage!! complete SH!T. but its the easiest route to obtain what you want without a steep learning curve.
When I click on Kies when I hook up a data cable, all it says is "connected" and nothing else happens. Can you provide a little more detail?
AT&T can push that upgrade to your phone (they did it for me).
Call the AT&T support line, tell them you have a Captivate on Android 2.2 and you need to have the "non-market apps" (or "unknown sources") feature enabled. They can push it to your phone from their end.
Once the push is complete, restart the phone and you should have the feature enabled.
Simplest way, use enclosed one click de-cripple.exe.
how do you use this file? I know I sound like a dumbass, but I have been using a tablet for the last year with no problem. Please let me know what I need to do with this? Thanks
first off, you have a stock phone with a stock rom, you havnt flashed any custom roms, right? if so get kies mini. when you open it it should show something similar to this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
when you plug your phone in, the button should gain color and be clickable, at which point you follow the on screen instructions. if that does not work, you will need to get the drivers for the captivate. all this software is available directly from samsung.
if kies still doesnt see your phone after the drivers then post back and we will get some more info goin on in this thread.
once on kk4, the latest official release, go to settings, applications, and check unknown sources. you should then be able to install non market apps.

Hey all,
Recently rooted my HTC One (M8) and I'm looking to get USB tethering working. What is the most efficient way to do this? I keep seeing a lot of threads for Wi-Fi tethering but nothing about USB tethering.
I have the TWRP recovery.
S-ON. Not going to jump on the Sunshine bandwagon unless I have to.
Would flashing ClockWorkMod recovery do the trick? If I recall USB tethering is built into that...
-Also when people mention '1.5x+ base' what are they talking about? Base... of...?

I have that too, but it requires a Sprint subscription. Is there a way to circumvent that? Much like how others are doing with the Wi-Fi tether?

I wouldn't know. I have a paid tethering plan.
try the hotspot hack, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712222 it deals with wireless but he subscription circumventing should work across all 3 kinds of tethering if not try a custom rom, i use the gpe port and its flawless exept maybe for miracast which i havent re-tested
