Is it me or is stock a bit sluggish? - HTC Incredible S

I am on stock 2.3.5 with Sense 3.0, Its a bit slow to be honest and what the hell is eating all the RAM 80mb free out of 606MB

That would be all the apps loaded into your internal memory. You can avoid slowdown by moving apps over to your SD card. Also if your running live wallpaper or have widgets that grab information and update via your mobile network. I wouldn't say it's your fault tho as these devices are advertised with live wallpaper and 3d applications. I found my phone to be sluggish too after installing many apps and running sync with fb and news and lots of other crap. Also the more you use your phone the slower it all get as files installed by apps on internal memory when uninstalled usually don't erase everything therefore clogging up your system. These devices are like computers in a lot of ways especially in the way when you buy it it runs fast and smooth than goes to **** after a few months. For all these reasons and many more I rooted and flashed so I have complete control over my device.

Follow this. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Incredible_S:_Full_Update_Guide
If you don't want cyanogen just replace it at the end but I would stay with cm.
Sent from my Incredible S using XDA App

OR,
If you want to stay stock, try and figure how to use ROM Cleaner.
Doing that, you can remove unnecessary default applications or bloatware that might be causing you discomfort, which cannot be uninstalled by conventional means.

stock is really slow. I would recomend rooting and flashing custom roms. One thats suits of course...

I agree. I had the Incredible S and it worked pretty smoothly before the update. There is a tad bit of lag with the new update. I would recommend trying a new rom.

[Q] Switching from CM5.0.7 to CM 6.0 RC2?

hi, I heard a lot of good stuff about CM 6.0, so I was wondering how I should begin to upgrade. I have bricked a g1 before, so I am afraid to do any more flashing without specific directions.
I have two micro sd cards,a 1gb(class2) and 8gb(class6). The 8gb card has apps from apps2sd and an ext partition, so I was wondering if I can just flash the rom with the 1 gb card and just put in the 8 gb card with no problems? I do not really mind if my call logs/texts do not get backed up as long as my apps work.
Info:
firmware: 2.1-update1
baseband: 62.50sc.20.17h_2.22.23.02
kernel: 2.6.33.4-cyanogen mod [email protected]toxygene #1
mod version: cyanogen-5.0.7-DS
Thank you. hope to hear from you guys soon.

I just flashed CM 6.0.0 DS RC2 from the site referenced:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/04/26/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-htc-g1-dream/
Very good step by step and you can download ROMS from there also.
As far as your SD cards I'd stick with the 8GB. (1) It's faster, (2) according to instructions you have to re-format so you have a swap partition-96MB, ext2-512MB and the rest fat32. Not sure that flashing with the 1GB and then switching to the 8GB would work--anyone ?
The ROM is very cool but I've noticed a couple glitches, maybe it's just me.
Market takes forever on 3G or wifi. It works, just no where near as fast as it seemed to on 1.6.
Now this problem is making me try other ROMS.
Example: I have Weather and toggle widgets app that I loaded and then place the widget so I have my nice clock but seems every time I reboot, for whatever reason, the widget won't reload, and if I try to re-install from the widget list it's not there. The app is still on the phone, but no access to the widget.
This is not the only app this has happened with. Possibly older apps with newer ROM issue. I checked the compatibility button in settings but no change.
I'm far from an expert, just a heads up.
Other than these couple things, killer ROM.
Technically these aren't tagged as stable ROMS but I'm having fun playing with all of them.
Good Luck

Thanks for the reply, I already went ahead and flashed CM 6.0RC2, the only problem I noticed is the lag when going to home from an app (camera, facebook, etc) and sometimes the phone would mute and I would have to reboot to fix it (Very annoying, but will stick with it for now)

Just a suggestion : maybe try this one : Htcclay's Superfly G1 d/s v1.1 - Froyo 2.2. Has ROM Manager on it with Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Battery life is very good, 3hrs @ 65% with heavy use, and the memory is absolutely the best. Still have 68MB open on internal memory. Most apps on SD. gmail app is changed, for the better, couple new options. The one and only pain is market, which is also a bit slow on this one. I'll live with it.
No glitches, no mystery reboots and widgets are staying put. Seems very very stable. Evidently you haven't had the couple small issues I had. I've tried 5 different ROMS today and slight issues with all but this one is really, really good.
Think I found the Rom I'm sticking with.
Gotta give props to cyanogen and all the xda folks for all the development, recommendations, and suggestions.
G1 has been sitting for months and I finally got the nerve to flash. Glad I did it, got a new phone and can't put it down.
thanks guys.

As far as I know. I have 767 backup apps on my SD card right now. Tell ya what. Been playing with this all day and observed a few things.
Get yourself - atrack dog (SD) backup, run it, takes a few minutes depending on how many apps, it'll list every backup app ya got on SD, "with" the "icons" showing. Either install apps you want from your SD or do new version tracking and see what you can upgrade. Also apps on internal storage are listed at the end of the SD list so no need to get the regular atrack dog.
Can you imagine trying to figure out which app is which with a file explorer just by the brief description ? After install atrack takes you right back to where you left off, unlike installing through file explorers. So much easier this way.
One thing though, things like weather apps, clocks and such, put on your internal memory, (starts with approx 89MB with this ROM), found that the slight delay running apps from SD screws **** up. I still have approx 65MB internal memory left, ball park 200 apps installed.
With this ROM after rebooting, give it a few extra minutes to boot completely. Apps on SD take a little to load their icons, I assume because of the delay loading from the SD card, or you'll end up with the same generic icon for all of them.
Once up and running though your good.
Absolutely Killer ROM........

Just "google" froyo themes and there's a bunch. Search Icons or widgets in Market and a big list will pop up for ya.
That background pic on the home screen wasn't one I would've picked so I just changed it.

[Q] Which New Rom to use 1st

I'm a older newbe to all of this so please bear with me.
I have a Sprint CDMA Hero running 2.27.651.6 PRI 2.20_003 and PRL 60670 that is rooted using the Universal 1 click app. I have a new 8g card in it with the following apps already loaded
Astro file manager
Clockwork Rom manager
Titanium back up
I have done a nandroid back up before with my 2 g sdcard but not since moving the files from my computer to the new card. Also I partitioned the 2gig that was in it with the Clockwork manager not the amonRA version.I have no partion on the new 8gig card as yet.
What I would like to know is..oh hell..just about everything for this
What I need from my phone is something fast, reliable, bluetooth capable,a nicer typewriter and looks really cool, and doesn't drain my batteries in 8hours of just standby, along with a decent camera tweak that will allow me to try to do something with all of this red haze I have no matter what setting I try. What I don't want is something that is not stable and I have to keep updating or resetting it all the time becasue of the phone locks up like my Windoz TP-2 6.5
Is this posasible in one of the new roms that are out right now ? I have no use for the TV function or NFL foot ball..nor tweeting anyone of looking at facebook,or peeping them. I use Dolphin HD browser and a lot of the apps from the market like the level and distance measure along with the audio spl meters.Heck I don't use any of the Nascar stuff either..I would like to have my music loaded on it so I can listen to it at work and I want good calculators on it as well. I haven't really seen any of the different roms with or without sense besides Windows 6.5 and what is on my Hero and a friends Evo..so I really know which kind will fit my needs and I really want to use..
So..long story short..Please help an old geezeer figure this out
Mac
Hey, welcome to the forums. Sounds like you're already off to a good start.
Based on what you've said, I think you might want to try Darchdroid 2.8 first. Here's the link to that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703133
It's free from all the HTC Sense and Sprint bloatware stuff, no Facebook, Twitter, AmazonMP3 junk either. It's very simple, clean, smooth, quick, and most importantly, even with all that stuff taken out it's still very stable for everyday reliable use. It has a music player, calculator, and I'm pretty sure the camera in it works just fine.
You could also think about trying out Cyanogenmod 6, link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755795
It's running Android 2.2 (the next version of Android with newer features) and is currently very stable for everyday use. But it's also still in the process of development, so there are updates and changes still being made to it on a regular basis which you may need to apply occasionally. Many users are very happy with it though.
Hope this helps and gets you off on the right foot.

[Q] Apps kept coming back after autokill -> memory leak -> lag

Hi all,
1. I've got these applications (Smartone-Vodophone SV app, 5 days weather, google map, social hub and such) that would keep coming back, relaunching themselves even after I put them onto my task manager's autokill list. Seems like they would wait around for me to enable the wifi/3G connection and then launch themselves. I even installed other apps to disable autolaunch and they would still launch themselves in the background every now and then. I had to kill them every time I unlocked my screen and these "launching and killing" cycles eventually depleted my memory down to below 100MB, making the lag situation even worse. Does anyone know how I can stop them from launching, without having to uninstall these apps?
2. I haven't installed the lagfix and I understand that the fix has to do with reformatting the apps' partition with a faster file system to reduce the lag (probably by giving it faster I/O access to the program's binaries?) I'm still waiting for Froyo, which should be out in a couple of weeks in my country. Does anyone know if Froyo would take care of this file system problem? Even with the Froyo or one-click lag fix, it still would not solve the apps launching and memory leak problem, right?
3. I notice that after I've installed more apps, the lag situation got worse. I was playing some songs on the external SD cards and it choked once in a while. I made sure I killed all the other apps and that I still got 100+MB to run just this one song player app and yet it would still choke. This tells me that the lag has nothing to do with available memory. And the player app was stock that came with the phone so there shouldn't be any fragmentation issue (apps installed later might have?) that makes it run slow. And if its the bad file system, this app, running all by itself, should have all the I/O bandwidth to itself so the access to the app's binaries should not have any lag... and neither should the access to the songs on the external SD card. So what exactly is causing the lag then? I don't see how the lagfix would solve this problem either. I actually have read that the lags would come back after a period of usage even with the lagfix. Anyone got an insight to this problem? What exactly is causing the lag? and why installing more apps seem to make it worse? and would Froyo be able to fix all these problems?
Thanks a lot.
@boarder838
I think you really need to read a lot more about just how Android works as you seem to have some strange ideas about how it works.
To start with you need to realise that having 200mb or 100mb of free Ram makes zero difference to performance only when you have no free Ram is it a problem and even then the system will sort it out for you by closing the least used program. Free Ram is just wasted Ram as it's not doing anything and will not make your device respond or work faster using a Auto Task Killer is wasting your battery and slowing down your device not speeding it up and saving battery as you seem to think. As i have pointed out above stop obsessing over your free Ram amount as unless you have none its not a problem stop using a Task Killer and you will most probably see your device responds faster as its not constantly killing things and just leaves them open doing nothing in the back ground which doesn't use Ram or Battery so just leave them be.
Yes Froyo will bring many improvements to our devices but won't fix a problem that doesn't exist re memory leaks and apps launching that you seem to think you have. I don't know but some of those apps may be system apps that need to run all the time which is why they keep relaunching. As for a lag fix well that's what we are all hoping for but if not I'm pretty sure the great people of this forum will come up with an easy to apply fix to it.
I have absolutely no problem playing Music or even streaming it over Bluetooth no lag stutters or break ups at all although my Music is on the Internal SD card. Maybe you should look at the quality that you have encoded your Music in as that may be causing problem. maybe some of the apps you have installed are also causing a problem but its impossible to know as we all install different apps and have different set ups.
I don't know how much experience you have with Android devices or flashing Roms but if you read enough and understand it you have the possibility to flash custom Rom's and various tweaks and fixes to make your device how you want it. That's part of the beauty of Android but don't rush into anything you are not sure about as you can end up with an expensive brick so read things many times and make sure you understand step by step what you are doing if you are going to attempt any of these things.
If you look at my signature you will see i am running a Custom Rom that includes a lag fix and various other tweaks it also allowed me to remove some of the programs in the official Rom that i didn't want or need. For me my device runs nice and smooth and fast of course I'm looking forward to Froyo and all the improvements that will bring but I'm quite happy with my Galaxy S the way it is now. Oh and this is my second Android device and I've never used a Task Killer never mind an Auto Task Killer and have never seen an out of Ram message either.
Marc
exactly what he said ^
Hi Marc,
Thanks for spending time to read through my long post and reply to it. I probably didn't explain my problem clearly in my post.
There were a couple of reasons I wanted to kill/stop the apps from starting:
1. Even before I installed any of those apps killer, I noticed that the available memory kept going down after a couple days of usage and it went down to below 100M. I figured some of the apps would need 10's of MB to run so I thought I should at least keep 100MB around so that it wouldn't run out of memory and start swapping when I start those apps. I don't know enough about Android but I assume its just like linux or other OS, when it runs out of physical memory, it would start swapping and slow things down. Even after I started using task killer and killed all the other tasks, the memory level would still not recover. That seems to point to a memory leak problem but using "Memory Booster" to do garbage collection seems to help. Still, it would be nice to be able to stop them from launching in the first place. <-- my first question.
2. I do not want any jobs/processes/apps that I don't need to run in the background to drain my battery. I don't think I can say for sure that those apps are all just idling and not using much CPU/battery. There are quite a few of them so if each of them use some CPU time/battery, it will add up eventually. Note that these are not system processes (or daemons as in unix's init.d). They are crappy apps from the cellular provider so I'm pretty sure they don't have to be running (they're probably just collecting my personal data or smth). I just thought there would be a way to stop them from launching without uninstalling them.
Thanks for answering my question regarding Froyo. If they would do the filesystem lagfix then I'll just wait for that update.
As for the music stuttering problem, my songs are on the external SD card but my old Nokia E85 phone has no problem playing with those songs on the same SD card. As I have pointed out in my last question, I was only running one app and with plenty of memory so it had nothing to do with available memory. I also suggested that however bad the filesystem was, the I/O bandwidth should still be enough to run this one music player app (access the program binary/libraries?) and to retrieve data from external SD card to play the music smoothly. So applying the lagfix probably won't help this problem though I still haven't tried the lagfix. Now I'm thinking that one of the task killer might be killing some system processes which were needed by the music player. I probably should uninstall all these task killers and see if it would help.
I have gotten the phone for only a couple of weeks so I haven't gotten around to try flashing different roms or rooting my phone. There's so much info scattered around on the web and I can't seem to find a source that really has the authority or complete information. I'll see if I have time later to look into all the tweaks and such but for now its just a phone to me and I just want it to run smoothly without having to spend too much effort to tune it.
Don't get me wrong. I still love the flexibility and customization opportunities provided by the Android platform and I just love to show off my "Beautiful Weather Widget", "Live Aquarium Wall Paper" and my cool 3D scrolling "Launcher Pro" to my iphone4 buddies and make them drool.
Thanks for you comment and let's hope Froyo will bring us a smooth running and stable platform.

Oh I found the problem with stuttering music. It was the "beautiful weather widget"! I tried removing all the task killers and aquarium etc and it still wouldn't work. As soon as I removed the weather widget there was no problem with music playback anymore. Anyone has the same problem that pretty weather widget?? I've already set the refresh period to every 3 hours but it still wouldn't help?!

Frustrated!

I have xperia T with locked bootloader, so i can only try stock based roms. I was very satisfied with the phone, but not any more. I changed many roms, but with every rom, after about a month of usage phone starts to be be laggy, and slow. Especially the browser. It takes ages to load a page. Also typing seems to get laggy. After I flash different rom, everything gets to normal again. Does anyone have the same scenario, as. I am? Could something be done to speed up the phone?

Maybe you have many apps?
Maybe you have mang apps that runs in the background?
Maybe your phone is broken?
You could install some tweaks such as V6 Supercharger.
You could clear cache once a while.
You could let your phone rest.
For me, I don't face this problem.

I do have many apps. I clear cache once in a while, and phone feels better when i do that. But i never shut down or reset. I'll try to do that and see how it performs.
Thanks for your answer.

I guess you don't have any special "issue" with your phone.
Every single phone lags - period. Sooner or later, and this or that moment, it lags. To be honest, I'm ok with that for quite some time. Every app is getting more hungry with every new version, and when you're installing and updating apps on daily pattern, it simply becomes too heavy for system resources to handle. For example, if you do a factory reset now on your T/TX, and if you're sticking with stock rom, there is 300MBs of updates right after first boot. I was shocked when I saw that my system memory jumped from 270MBs of usage after first boot, to 530MBs just after system apps updates...
Android lag tendencies are old story now. Google did not solve this yet, and project butter didn't make any notable changes regarding UI lag. Yet, I would't change it for iOS or WP for a whole world.
There for there will be trim support in android 4.3
It's like your windows based pc, after a while it will get slow. And so are android phones.
- Keep the least number of apps possible on the phone
- Remove widgets you don't really need
- Chose the smaller sized app with the humbler memory foot print, if there are alternatives
- Trim occasionally as what my predecessor mentioned, there are trim apps out there, like Lagfix
- Reboot once a day.
Sounds profane, I know.
i've tried many custom roms with LBL but never had this problem.
all i do is restart the phone once a week or two weeks..

I was considering to chnage my phone, and go for S4, or HTC ONE, but because of those "Android lag tendencies", after a month of not reseting or cleaning the cache, they should lag olso. Am I right? I'm not familiar with WP or IOS. Do they have lag tendencies also ?

Well, you will probably get a bit snappier performance with two mentioned phones, but believe me, if anybody tell you their phones are not lagging at all, like never ever, they lie. I played with S4, and I played with HTC One, and these also have glitches from time to time.
Regarding iOS and WP, I never personaly used any of those, but I played a lot with that phones, as my friends are having them. iOS is generally considered to have quite fluid interface, but that's because iOS is totally different system and is handling user interface with different priorities. And honestly, it is fluid. Especially since iPhone 4... But on the other side, it is such a limited system, that I never ever considered switching to it. WP is also quite fluid, but again, that giant-squares interface is very dull to me, and WP ecosystem is still far behind Android.
Point is, I'm not willing to change Android for some other weaker system, just for the sake of a snappier and more fluid interface...
But that's just me. Maybe somebody else is having different priorities.
Thanks for the honest answer. I can live with the reset from time to time. I also don't consider changing Android for iOS or Windows because Android has so many features over them. I hope in the future Google will manage to eliminate that lag.

We all do... Practically, the only argument iOS and WP users are having, is that magic word "lag".
Other than that, Android is unbeatable in all other areas.
Big colourful icons, multi-function widgets, and many other eye candy functions use system resources without delivering a real value for the user. Windows has plump tiles, and the app drawer is just a simple list of apps. Just as examples. My wifes windows phone has 2/3 of the hardware power, but it worked fluid any time.
Change the icons to simple symbols, make a vertical scroll app drawer with tiny icons, remove widgets, use the app drawer to access apps. And so on. It will bring you leaps forward in terms of functionality.
Most will say that unused memory is wasted memory. I believe on the long run it's better apps have a proper exit button, and clear themselves from memory when done.

[Q]About firmwares and custom roms etc.

Hello people.
I recently bought an xperia z1. A very nice phone which works really well, except for a few things. Hence this topic.
I experience good battery life and quite fast loading of apps etc, but i notice that scrolling inside some apps goes stuttery and laggy. Something i didn't expect from a phone with this kinda hardware. Ecspecially phonebook, call log and gmail have problems with this, just like facebook for example.
Now the questions.
Is this a thing that will be fixed in a future firmware release? And if i install a custom rom using a something like doomkernel, will this issue be better?
It really bothers me somehow, and i don't mind unlocking the bootloader to fix this issue. But if i'm not sure that it will fix this stutter and lag, i think it might not be worth it getting problems etc with warranty.
Thanks in advance for answering
Yes, it can be improved. There is not fix on that and no one can said perfectly what is related too. I got some light laggy launcher but i live with that as it do more stuff than the stock one.
So, if you find an application laggy is not the phone, is the application it self which is badly coded and don't working correctly as it should.
I give you an example, I have Virtua Tennis purchased long time ago, V2.0, then updates after updates the game become laggy as hell, what that mean, that mean updates are ment to improve the application but if they are bad coded they will give you laggy issues, I reverted to v2.0.
At the end I don't think a Firmware will solve all this problems but you can be sure, you will get improvements installing Custom Roms or Custom Kernels which are ment to performing your device.
I don't saying it is worth to unlock bootloader, check also the applications which working in background, all the time they are the main reason for laggy phone as they run and eat ram and CPU.
You have to spend time flashing some latest FW and find the most stable combination.

Thanks for the quick answer!
And what you're saying about the background apps eating ram and cpu, i was thinking the same thing. I notice the lag is random, sometimes it goes quite fluent and sometimes its like i'm working with a phone that can't handle the os because of low specs. Really weird. Is there any tool that gives detailed insight into these background apps and stuff?
The main thing bothering me is the phone/phonebook/call log app which is delivered from sony itself. It's just text, and even that makes the scrolling in that app very stuttery. While i get updates for apps like album, and the scrolling inside that app goes smooth as silk. Just like scrolling within chrome (although it sometimes hangs for a very short moment).
And btw. rooting and deodexing without unlocking the bootloader, will that help too? I guess there's tools that make better performance too then. Or is working with unlocked bootloader better?

Yes, there is an application which check what application wake up your phone or running when the phone is in sleep or even when it should be off but is not. At the moment I don't remember that application as I never used that one, but I know there is as it was mentioned many times for the same reason and battery drain.

Root your phone will definitely help in many ways as many Applications to check your system need Root access, and also if you find an system app that cause your issues and uninstalling is necessary then Root is needed too. Deodexing can improve the customization as it meant for it but is not for performance, so is just up to you if you want to do it or not. There is no tool which will improve performance on your phone, my personal opinion they are all junk application, like the kind of System cleaner. Android is not Windows.
Rooting and Deodexing can be done without Unlocking Bootloader. Unlocking Bootloader is for flash Custom Kernels only. You still can flash Custom Roms based on Stock Kernels.
I'm really thinking of doing that right now. Also because of scrolling cache, which i think might be the cause for the issue i'm having trouble with.
Do you know something about it?

Not really but that kind of stuff it can not be done without Root, I guess.
Where did you find the information about it?

I noticed that custom roms like romaur and ihackers included that mod. Then i looked it up on google and found some articles which said that many apps have a bad way of handling that cache. I also don't have any experience with other firmwares than the unrooted 4.4.2. Hence my question.
Now i'm also thinking that sony puts alot of effort into optimizing apps for this purpose with new devices, maybe that's why i hear that the 4.2.2 experiences are much better than the newest 4.4.2. But that can also be a bit negative thinking, since i still got hope that future firmwares will make scrolling through call log/phonebook or gmail better.
Although on my old xperia s i noticed the same. With the 4.1 firmware installed, the facebook app scrolled alot better then the with the updates that came after it. Just like stock browser always been the best scroller. Unlike chrome and firefox for example. On my z1 chrome clearly is the best scroller btw, just hangs sometimes. But then it's on long facebook pages etc. Otherwise its very fluent.
