[Q] Noob recovery rom question - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Forgive me for a stupid question but I'm VERY new to this:
Because Touchwiz is so awful, and the original galaxy tab is being denied ICS by Samsung, I've been thinking about using a custom rom.
There's already a nice looking ICS port coming along.
However, being VERY new to the galaxy tab - I bought this one used, as a pure wifi device, though it HAS a sim slot, I want to know -- how can I restore the original OS if I have problems with a custom firmware?
I noted Kies will refuse to deal with a samsung tablet if it's not an official rom... or am I mistaken?
I'm on a NTT Dococmo SC-01C (original Galaxy Tab) with official 2.3 docomo firmware. this was an upgrade from the preinstalled 2.2
Thank you SO much for help in advance.

You can flash stock firmware using either heimdall or Odin
So yes you can always go back.

Would you recommend the ICS Alpha 3, or is there a better Honeycomb rom? I can't be sure which is which because it seems like every distro has its OWN version number which doesn't match the android release number... sigh

I don't have personal experience with the hc port from but its being released as an release candidate which means that it should work pretty OK but there are probably still quite a few bugs to squash. The ics alpha 3 from is what I've been testing recently. It is NOT feature complete and those features that ARE there are extremely buggy if you are curious to know what isn't working I suggest exploring the ics from dev thread. Most of the working/broken info is in the first post. More detailed info can be found by paging through. Its nowhere near ready for prime time as an every day rom. I'm just testing it because I'm a bleading edge kind of guy and wanted to check out responsiveness and the slick new UI. I will be switching my from back to a gb room sharpish. Please note that i,m not giving the project a bad review, contrarily its showing amazing progress and I'm sure within a few months that there will be a release candidate of either fully working ics aosp or cyanogen mod 9 which is an ics project for the tab that many of the pics aosp project members are contributing to right now.
For a self described noob I would suggest looking for the most stable well tested and fastest rooms you can find. My best recommendations would be overcome kratos (the latest version for the Sgt) or cyanogen mod 7. Both of which are based on gingerbread and both of which have been tested for long periods of time with awesome user feedback and work great without the bloat of all the Samsung apps and such

[Q] New to flashing galaxy s

Cheers,
got my first android phone July of last year, a Galaxy S I9000, im very happy
with it except when it hangs or reboots by itself, not to mention the battery
drain. And since its my only phone then, I decided not to root and install any
custom firmware as Im afraid I might brick it. Anyways got my second phone
recently, a Galaxy Note N7000, now I think I am ready to root and install a
custom rom and play around with it more. Can someone here show me where I
can get a step-by-step guide on how to install a custom firmware? and which of
the firmwares would you suggest? heres the details of my phone:
Model : GT-I9000
Firmware : 2.3.3
Baseband : I9000DXJV9
Kernel : 2.6.35.7-I9000DXJV9-CL216763
[email protected] #2
Build No : GINGERBREAD.DXJV9
Please be gentle with me here, im a virgin at this and this will be my first try
ever on flashing a phone.
Thanks a lot in advanced.
First off most of the ROMS, Kernels or Modem threads all have fairly easy instructions in the first couple of thread posts so I have provided the links to those I like.
If you are looking for an ICS ROM try Team ICSSGS. It has been a while since they had any updates but the ROM is rock solid and the thread below should explain everything. There should be an immanent release of RC5 which I'm sure will be even better.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494493
Another great ROM is SlimICS. This has more regular updates if you check out the first post it has a link to everything you need to know to get it running. I am personally running this ROM at the moment but will move back to Team ICSSGS as for me this is the best ROM.
If you miss the toggles in the notification bar for Team ICSSGS then download widgetsoid from the Play Store - free app that can be set up to sit in notification bar.
If you want root but plan on keeping a Stock Rom then check out CF-Root. All instructions in the first couple of posts. Lots of info but if you read it, it is fairly easy to understand. CF-Root is basically stock kernel with root. No CF-Root for JV9 but people have reported using either JVO or JVP.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
NB. Before starting make sure to back up your EFS folder & make a Nandroid backup after getting root.
Also make sure to get everything you need first so if you run into issues that can be resolved quicker.
So get the ICS Rom you want, download your stock rom & odin at Sam Mobile.
Another great resource is SamMobile which has all the stock roms, odin etc.
If you want to fiddle with kernels after flashing ROM then my favorite ICS kernel is Semaphore: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468795
For modems: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158783
Thanks for the reply scubadude, I will read up on those links you provided and will take it from there.
update:
Just followed the instructions to the links you've provided and now im done. I used the Team ICSSGS rom and now my phone seems to have been reborn.
Performance is way better than it was, and looks good with ICS. Thanks a million for the help.
Pleasure... hope you enjoy it. For an even better experience try either Devil or Semaphore kernel. I'm using Semaphore.
scubadude, I've installed Semaphore... im still playing around with it, and
re-installing my apps and all... thanks a lot for the help, i really appreciate it.
Just a followup, I noticed that I "Sim Toolkit" is now missing is my apps list.
Any ideas how to get this back?
As far as i am aware sim toolkit does not work on any of the ics roms. Someone can correct this if i am wrong

@scubadude
Ah thats unfortunate, since my Paypal account is linked to my DebitCard managed
by my Telco... which I can only access via the Sim Toolkit. Its not a biggie tho.
Also I noticed that battery seems to drain quick... any suggestions?
Unfortunately battery drain is an issue with ICS although for my use battery has been similar to stock rom which has always been the best for me.
The way I use my phone I make sure gps, 3g, wifi & location stuff is all off - turn on when you need them. Also don't overclock.
Make sure you are logged out of latitude (was a massive battery drain in gingerbread for me). You can also try different modems (apparently better signal means less drain) Modem thread here. Try JW4 or one of these jvu, zsjpg, dxjv9, jvt, or you could try the nexus modems kf1, kb3, kj1 Nexus Modems (search in thread for link. )
With phone like this I get 2 to 4 days or about 3.5 to 4 hours of screen on.
You can also try Slim ICS as it has updated to ICS 4.0.4. although I am not noticing a big battery difference and plan to move back to Team ICSSGS as soon as RC5 comes out.
So far I have tried Teamhacksung build 17, CM9 latest nightly, AOKP, CNA, WeUI, Slim ICS & Team ICSSGS. I have tried the following kernels: icy glitch, devil & semaphore. Midnight kernel is supposed to give good battery life so you could try that.
My favourite has been Team ICSSGS with semaphore although currently on Slim ICS 3.3 only because it has ICS 4.0.4 & Team ICSSGS is still on ICS 4.0.3.
I'm running the ICSSGS Rom for a couple of days now and I have to agree, there's some battery drain.
Anyway, it's a good and stable rom and I did not have any problems since flashing it.
What you could also try is to switch off vibration if you not really need it.
What I did was disabeling the "Google location service" (not sure if this is the right translation as my phone is set to german language).
Anyway, even with a higher battery drain I wouldn't go back to Ginger.
There's always a jack around ... you just need to find it

Thanks for the link again, i have seen that link before and tried it (the one from the first post works for me) However, it doesnt seem to connect to my telcos server. Same result also on the first link provided. At any case I've given up on that for the meantime since my S is only my secondary phone and im getting a new debit card for my paypal. Oh I've now installed SlimIcs on my S and im loving it... feels more snappier. I didnt know that flashing could be addictive.

Unfortunately it is... Slim ics is great defintely my favourite at the moment as it has received regular updates and is running android 4.0.4 vs team icssgs on android 4.0.3. I'm sure once team icssgs update they will be back on top though.
For something different. Not quite as fast but still awesome try WeUi. All the rest are pretty much the same in my opinion. In general forum (i think) there is also a thread with bench marks for most of the roms.

Try use ics elite, this what i use and work like a charm.

Thanks @luftys as much as I'd want to try that... wife is using the phone and shes very much happy with it that she wont even let me touch it anymore...
anyways I still have a Galaxy Y and Galaxy Note to play with....

[Q] Getting my Bad boy today...

Hey Guys and Gals,
Just bought a Note, will be arriving in the next couple of hours.
Just a couple of questions -
Im coming from a GSII that has been running a custom ICS rom and really really love the features ICS brings and how it looks. I would like to run ICS on my Note from the word go as I feel going back to GB would taint my experience.
(Q) Am I correct in assuming that if I flash a custom ICS rom on my Note that I wont be able to use the S Pen features???
If im correct with the first question, then I will not flash a ICS rom immediately as I want to experience the S Pen and all its features to see if its for me. But I will want to Root it.
(Q) If I root my device will I still be able to update to the official ICS (When released) via a Update Notification or will I have to flash in a differant way???
Thanks in advance, and I look forward to becoming a part of the XDA Galaxy Note Community....

you are quite right my friend, the GB on note for now is perfectly fine if wanna try out the new features.. even i recently upgraded from s2 running ics and to be honestly the first day i was missing ICS badly but gb on note is different than when i first got s2 year back.. i am just waiting for the premium suite from samsung with specific new features for note and havent really been keen to try the cooked ics roms since i am more than satisfied having the note for over 2 weeks.. but eventually its what you want to do with your device that is the freedom of android but do give the forums a read as upgrading to ics has given many new users problems.. otherwise just root your LC1 ++ 2.3.6 rom and fall in love with note all over again.. enjoy your new phone and dont forget to get screen protector and some sexy cases cheers
You wont be able to use the s-pen's features on an AOSP/AOPK build. The only safe ICS roms at the moment are the CM9 based ones so you won't get any of the Samsung specific functions of the s-pen if you flash those.
You could flash an ICS rom based on the leaked firmwares and then use the DAFUQ kernel which to my knowledge doesn't have the flaws that could mess up your eMMC chip but that kernel is in alpha or beta status so some (minor) problems are to be expected when using it.
My advice, stay on GB for the moment. If you want to root, look for the thread in the Developer's section with the pre-rooted kernels. Just flash one of those with PC Odin and you're rooted without the chance of triggering the triangle and binary counter so you still have warranty. If you choose the same pre-rooted kernel as the one you are running now you should be able to OTA/Kies update your phone to the official ICS firmware when it's released but you'll lose root obviously.
There are some very good custom firmwares and great alternative kernels for GB in the Dev section as well if you still wanna tweak your Note.

i am agreeing with this person because it is very true do not flash ICS yet. not worth the hassel. GB with custom roms are fine...
i have had my note since november and i run checkrom v6 HD . works fine and flawless. no need to mess with leaked crap
Sorry abit new to all of this.

GB is Gingerbread, the current version of Android OS on the Note. ICS is Ice Cream Sandwich, the updated version that will be released by Samsung in the near future.
Most alternative launchers can be themed, look for themes for your launcher in the Play Store.

Some people can wipe with affected kernels as often as they want without problems. Just because you didn't brick, DO NOT advise other users that they will be OK.

Best ICS Rom ?

Hello, I've been having some problems with my galaxy when I update to the official ICS update. I cant lock my screen and my firmware is stuck on the home screen. I've downgraded and re updated using the official update, but I got the same issues as before. So I downgraded again. So now I come to you looking for everyone's opinions on some good ICS roms. Thanks in advance for your help.
This its very subjective and depends on your needs/likes.. Use this weekend and download 3 or 4 roms aosp and touchwiz and try them all to figure out what's best for you... Because what's best for me could be the worst for you
Sent from my GT-P6200 using Tapatalk 2
try first custom rom ics based, after you could try some aosp google based.
also you could flash only a custom kernel in a stock ics firmware.

Check out Rocket ROM in the Dev section.
In my opinion the best ICS custom ROM for the Note.
Super stable and super quick.

If you use the S-Pen or the FM-Radio a lot you may want to stick with Touchwiz based ROMs, like:
Kingdroid: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652831
Alliance: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831270
But if you want to have a smooth android experience without any Samsung addition I would say go for Cyanogenmod:
CM9 Nightlies / Stable: http://get.cm/?device=n7000
There is no stock radio or notes app in these, you'll have to download third party solutions.

Recommendations for upgrading from overcome v.4.0.0#40

My tab has been working well on overcome for so long that I have stayed away from updating. Now I am starting to get some wifi issues and think it is time to upgrade to a new rom. Any recommendations and advice on which ROM is stable and providing the fewest issues? If there is a step by step guide that would be helpful. I have spent the majority of my time updating ROMS on my Sensation, running Venom and really enjoying it.
I just want to make sure I don't brick this tab by doing something wrong. I remember using odin in the past.
Thanks
john
sorry, running overcome 7 series v4.1.0
You only need Odin to return to stock or to achieve a clean stock state.
Using overcome means you have cwm recovery.
You can try anything from ICS to JB there are plenty.
I am on AOKP JB.
All are dead easy to flash from cwm.

thanks, running cm10 and very happy with the performance. It was much easier this time around.

[Q] Time for a new ROM - noob questions...

Ok, so my P1000 (stock Gingerbread, bought SIM-freeon and currently on Vodafone UK) has become soooo slow over the past two years of ownership, and a minor water contact today forced a factory reset... So a clean JPZ based Tab to play with...
Been toying with the idea (in hope for better performance) to get a custom ROM from here, maybe one based on ICS (if the hardware can take it), but after a couple of days of reading through all the posts and threads, I confess I am at a complete loss: can anyone recommend a stable working ROM (even if essentially based on stock images) that could/should improve the tired tab's performance? Also, not clear: do most ROMs here come with rooting or do I then need to apply CFRoot separately? Lastly, at the time of my last post (way way back), Overcome ROMs seemed to be the way to go, but today their site is down?
Please be gentle, though I understand the basics, I am indeed a novice in this arena
Follow my signature for link to overcome new link thread
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Great, many thanks, downloading now... As a follow up, I understand this is their version of 2.3.6 (Gingerbread); don't want to be a , but was wondering if there's an ICS ROM out there for the P1000? Also, is overclocking possible on the Overcome ROM? (the idea is to try and get a device that actually runs better than stock GB, so not even sure if the hardware is up to speed with ICS)
Again, thanks and apologies for the q's, got more confused reading through the posts than I was before
There are AOSP based ICS/JB
Just look for them in dev section.
Either CM or AOKP.
You still need overcome kernel to have cwm first in order to flash them.
kernel, not ROM, OK?
Overcome should be overclockable.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda app-developers app
There is a relly good CM10 (JB) ROM I'm using: sapir-rom.blogspot.com It's nightly, but it works perfectly for me with very good performance.
