Basically my question is why my Vivid shows 4G in the status bar always? Even if I turn off data, it still shows the 4G icon. I was in a spot yesterday where I definitely had no data and I still had a 4G icon. It never changes from 4G. Ever. There is no way I can always been in an area with 4G coverage.
Anybody else notice this?
you can thank AT&T for meddling with the framework. they like to trick everyone into thinking you have 4G coverage everywhere, even when you dont actually have it.

Damn. That's exactly what I thought but was hoping that wasn't the case. Now, if I'm in an LTE area, will it show it or still just 4G?

It will show "4G LTE"
with the lte written small, just below the G
See, AT&T wants to promote LTE.... but not at the expense of admitting that everything else, is not 4G
No worries, this is something I know ROMs will address.
And no wonder I haven't seen the LTE yet because I'm not in an LTE market. Awesome.
If we do custom icons (such as animated v8) in the UOT kitchen, what icons would be used for 4g and lte?
There are only 10 kinds of people. Those who understand binary math, and those who don't.
Never mind. I see they are included in that pack. Never noticed them before.

Here's what I wrote in the Holicakes thread.

4G under the AT&T ROM is used to represent UMTS (3G), HSD/UPA (H) and HSPA+ (H). Thus, you previously could never actually see it bouncing between UMTS and HSPA, which the phone frequently does.
LTE will show up as LTE in the little indicator, if it's available.

AFAIK, there is no unique icon for HSPA+; you've just got to trust in the speed. Also AFAIK, any ROM that displays H+ is true, as I think that HSPA+ is merely a seamless extension of HSD/UPA.
Flashing an international ROM shows just how crap of a job AT&T's "4G" indicator does.

Wait, H+ or H? I'm getting H+ speeds, but my phone still shows H. H is all I've seen on any international ROM I've used, both on the Inspire and this.

I'm not sure if this is related, but I noticed that after I flashed Revolt 1.3, I never see the "LTE" symbol in my notification bar. I'm in an LTE area, so I know it's available--does that mean my phone isn't running LTE anymore or is the symbol just not showing up on this ROM? I apologize in advance if this is a ridiculously misguided question--I'm new here and learning as I go.
By the way, mtmichaelson--I said this before and I'll say it again--awesome ROM! Thanks again for your hard work.

I never noticed that and why mt why did you get rid of the LTE? I liked that.
I did a UOT kitchen mod before I noticed, so I don't know if it was like this out of the box. When I turn off mobile network (under wireless and networks), I am still getting a 4g icon. I also have it when on WiFi. Anyone else got this (pre or post UOT)?
I am using animated v8 icons if it matters.

198 reads and I'm the only one with this? Odd.

I didnt have it before rooting, but afterwards it was there all the time. It was even there when my SGS2 (Exynos) would fall back to EDGE. So youre not the only one.
My mobile data is always off and WiFi is always on. 4g icon has never left the status bar. Btw, my phone is completely stock and I've only had this phone since Sunday.

I know this doesn't sound possible hell I Dont believe it myself but I am in LittleRock Arkansas where Sprint has NO 4g, I'm up here at work bored so I flash the 1000 Verizon prl, I unlock my SIM card (don't think that mattered , I didn't put a SIM card in). I forced roaming on my phone and I about had a heart attack when the 4g showed in my notification bar!! I thought it may be wrong but I ran some speed test with and without it. The catch is I lost voice. How is this possible?

Highly doubt it... Verizon is operating LTE on 700 mhz (the latest article I saw was that in 2015 they will plan to shift some EVDO to LTE on 1900). The Sprint HTC One only supports LTE on 1900.
Just because Sprint hasn't officially announced LTE in that area doesn't mean they haven't been doing the update. They have a ton of location that have spotty (and even complete) LTE coverage that aren't even officially on the LTE list.
The n.ispsn is something new also.

Force roaming causing 4G detection isn't anything new, actually. If you put the device into LTE mode only, it achieves something similar. The device would much rather stay on Sprint service if at all possible and will take a weak LTE signal if it can (even if it would normally prefer a nearby Sprint tower providing 3G coverage).
The speeds you've posted are in-line with a Sprint 4G test/slow rollout and would frankly be rather laughable on Verizon's 4G network-- if we get around the obvious hurtle that it is not physically possible for your phone to pick up Verizon's LTE, full stop.
Eliminate what's impossible (by hardware) and we have a series of at least possible alternatives.

Sprint 4G on initial release in an area or an a tower is very wonky. It's off and on, slow and only works at a short range. Just be patient and you will get it really soon. They just activated it in a couple areas where I live also. They tend to put them near Sprint Corp stores.

Why is it unbelievable that Sprint is bringing 4g to Arkansas... They HAVE TO do the NV update on every single tower that broadcasts Sprint Signal. It is cheap as dirt to just add the LTE hardware into the NV station once the NV upgrade is completed. This is a nation wide requirement since they are about to do some wonky ass things on the 1900 MHz PCS bands (when they start to reallocate their allowed bandwidth to different techs, it is an across the board FCC license).
I'm from Arkansas too and have been keeping up with the 4G there because that's where I travel to every chance I get. Jonesboro has sprint lte and it's been planned for little rock and Fayetteville to get it for months. It was only a matter of which day. I'm surprised it took them this long. But it was expected. I'm so happy to hear this wonderful news

First, sorry if this has been asked to death. I did some searching and checked recommended posts and FAQs but nothing quite covered this...
I came from a Telus (Canada) ROM and flashed Android Revolution. Now, on Telus I'm pretty much always in 4G no matter what, never changes. Occasionally I'll skip up to LTE; at least according to the icons.
Anyway on this new ROM it's skipping all over from 3G to H to H+ to occasionally LTE. I heard rumblings that 4G is usually a buzzword companies use incorrectly due to a loophole, so is that what I am seeing here? Telus using 4G icon for the signal levels of 3G, H and H+?
Ideally I would like to change my icon set back to what it was, if that's not too difficult (I was hoping for something like taking them from the other ROM and pasting them into the new one, but i have a feeling it won't be that easy). If it's a pain, the knowledge of what's going on will help me just deal with it.
Thanks in advance you guys!
If its anything like AT&T this is exactly what happened. Your new ROM is reporting data connection correctly, your stock ROM only showed 4g.
Are you s-off?
And during installation did it ask you to pick a carrier?

I am currently not S-OFF as I haven't had any reason to drop the security yet.
When I installed it, it did ask what version of the HTC One I had; I chose HTC (Canada) from the list.

Alright, cool I'll give that a shot.
Just in case it doesn't work, in terms of increasing signal capabilities its 3G, H, H+ and then LTE correct?
Is there a way I can change my data icon to show LTE or 4G all the time instead of H or E. Im running the google edition rom and I don't like seeing H on my phone. I notice on insertcoin roms he gives you the option to choose between at&t, t-mobile and international. I don't think there are themes or tweaks for that yet. The data icon is dependent on your coverage, so it changes from place to place.
you could change to a carrier with better LTE coverage. If your seeing E that means the coverage sucks.

icons are just cosmetic. the important issue is what technology your modem is talking to the tower with. LTE is ideal, hspa is tolerable and edge is garbage.
A lot of carriers started labling hspa as 4G. AOSP calls lte 4g. The GPE shows LTE and HSPA which is the most accurate. Changing the icons to anything other than an indicator of LTE, Hspa or Edge is just putting lipstick on a pig.

Lol well I just need me some lipstick cause I already know that most carriers dress H+ as 4g just rather have the 4g or LTE icons regardless of what signal I'm receiving.

The icons draw a little differently in 4.4. they moved the up/down triangles so they only show on the quicksettings tiles. You could try tracking down some kind of icon mod zip from 4.3 and give it a whirl but I dunno if it would work.

seems promising for the sort of decoration you're wanting.
none of this will make one bit of difference in your connectivity. Same as painting a Honda Ferrari red and sticking a Ferrari logo on it won't make it faster.
