[Q] Kernel Panic - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After flashing stock with ODIN using the AIO toolbox my captivate gives a message
"Kernel Panic Upload Mode" with some of the letters covered by these values
"RST_STAT = 0x4
PWIC_IRQ1 = 0xfc
PWIC_IRQ2 = 0x0
PWIC_IRQ3 = 0x1
PWIC_IRQ4 = 0x0
PWIC_STATUS1 = 0x40
PWIC_STATUS2 = 0x2c"
before this my phone started giving weird problems and a bunch of applications kept force closing.
I restarted it and the phone got stuck in the CM7 load screen.
(I had Cyanogen Mod 7 flashed on it)
Any ideas...

Don't Use the AIO Toolbox.
U may need a JIG to get back into download mode (if u can't get there through the regular methods). Once in download mode I would recommend Flashing back to Stock and go from there.
Check my signature link below for some links that will help ya out.

Your not going to like the answer. Flash to stock, with a pit file, AFTER formatting the internal sd. Remove the external sd and Sim before you start.

That happened to me. I just pulled battery and rebooted.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

how exactly do I flash the internal sd with ODIN?

If you want to wipe it clean, you can user Odin one click jf6 it has a "master clear" button plug in while booted and usb debugging turned on.
or you can boot into cwm go to mounts and storage and format sdcard.
Not sure what you're tyring to do...but that's the only thing Odin does to the sdcard.

ok i clicked master clear in the 1-click odin...it fails to do anything
odin just shows master clear and nothing after that(left it on for a while)
im still using the aio toolbox should i use something else?
Also I cannot boot into anything if i turn the phone on it immediately goes into kernel panic
i can only access download mode

Reflash stock, without aio and with external sd and sim removed. After it boots up, take any photos, songs,etc off the internal sd, then format it.

I have been trying to use ODIN to flash to stock but now whenever it gets to the "SetupConnection..." phase it gets stuck. I have downloaded a different ODIN one-click to see if it has any effect but it did not.
Any thoughts or suggestions now? Is my phone bricked?

If Odin can't connect, you may have to reinstall the Samsung drivers.
Make sure you have Odin open before plugging in your phone to the PC in download mode. Also make sure you are on a rear USB port.
Try the attached drivers assuming you are on an I897.

U probably need to try something other than a "one click".

i tried the full odin and that just resulted in kernel panics
this one-click put my phone in a very unusable state
do i need to get that download mode jig now?

Try using kb2 instead of jf6. Some phones won't boot eclair.

i cant get into download mode so should I make a download mode jig

Yep. Click my signature below. Then go to the links I have there on how to make a jig and/or where to buy one.

[Q] need help with flashing
I know all the info on here is very usefull but too many people assume us noobs know all the lingo,I managed to root have s.u. and rom manager,ive flashed cwm,backed up everything 3 times with tit bu,dbox and desktop and ext hrd dve,I have cog,andromeda,perception all downloaded and put on sd card as .zip , when i choose dl rom from sd card and check the 3 pre inst options my phone then goes into the bootmode with options to (re-boot now,wipe all user data,re install packages , wipe cache. Iam scared to do the wipe system and user data but have tried the re boot now,re inst packages and wipe cache all which just re boot as though im shutting the phone off and back on again. i need to know if i have to choose the wipe system and user data and when i do what do i do from there I NEED DETAILS step by step,also i dont understand all this odin stuff
Are you able to get into CWM recovery. It's the green one. Choose install .zip from sd card. If it's blue, you're still at the Android recovery. Choose install update.zip, do it until CWM recovery green boots up. Then choose install .zip from sd card. Locate your rom on the sd card and install.

Today i managed to brick my rogers captivate i 1896 while trying to flash a kernal,when i checked the progress my phone was switching between samsung screen and suckerpunch repeatedly..now.. i downloaded odin used the vol up/down while plugging to usb got to download mode started odin it worked or so i thought now i just have a flashing att logo any takers..i dont wanna go anyfurther alone and completely screw things up
remember when i told you you should read the info in the forums?
it applies here too.
you are 'clayed' soft-brick if you will.....use ODIN to get back to stock....and stop messing with your phone until you understand wtf you are doing....
[Q] just flashed to att 2.1
I screwed up my phone and used odin to get it to master clear i was rogers 2.2 stock now my phone is att 2.1 eclair,i had all my stuff backed up with tit bu,what do i need to do now to get my phone back because right now its like a brand new att which i dont want
i know i know,im tryna learn..trial and error i guess, I got it to work by using odin but now its a 2.1 like a brand new phone how do i get all my stuff from titanium or is it easier to flash a new rom from where i am now
btw im on rogers stock 2.2
flash a 2.2 kernel with odin, that has CWM baked into it (hint, nearly all of them do) and then flash straight from CWM....

My thought would be to shuck off your mortal Froyo coils and move on to one of the great Gingerbread roms such as Continuum 5.5, GR-12, Serendipity vII, or Mosaic III (JVH is good but JVO is better).
CAREFULLY read ALL instructions!! The devs here are remarkably knowledgable but sometimes forget the word everything out fully for the noob.
ODIN flashes happen when your phone is in Download Mode (yellow triangle). CWM flashes happen in Recovery mode (must flash a file that has been transferred to the phone previously).
FROYO: Download Mode = Hold Both Volume Buttons and plug in your data cable. (Make sure ODIN is running on your computer first) - - Recovery Mode = Hold both volume buttons AND power button (wait until kernel image flashes a second time and then let go of all buttons) - - GINGERBREAD: Download Mode = Hold only BOTTOM volume button and plug in your data cable. - - Recovery Mode = Hold TOP volume button AND power button until kernel image flashes a second time and let go of all buttons.
Flash one of these packages if you are on a Rogers Captivate...

ive tried it multiple times and was only able to get that screen once. I did not have the USB plugged in, and i pushed on the bottom right side of the phone a couple times squeezing to make sure the battery was in, so i dont know if maybe one of the soft-keys was a part of bringing it up, or if this screen even matters to anything?

I've been trying for a couple months now to get into download mode. This is the first time ive seen anything on the screen since trying. Under my thumb is an asterisks (*) on the left edge of the display, but i can never get anywhere. I've tried all methods from http://samsungcaptivate.wikia.com/wiki/Putting_the_Phone_into_Download_Mode
Nothing lets me in! But im gonna keep trying...
I got it again! It says:
RST_STAT = 0x1
PMIC_IRQ1 = 0x0
PMIC_IRQ2 = 0x0
PMIC_IRQ3 = 0x14
PMIC_IRQ4 = 0x0
PMIC_STATUS1 = 0xc0
PMIC_STATUS2 = 0x2c
Any idea what that is? I plugged the phone into the comp with the USB cable, no battery, no sim card, no sd card. after plugging it in i held volume UP + power and put in the battery and it came up!
Remove every thing batter sim memory card, Press both volume plug in the cable then battery, Or both volume then battery and then cable or make a jig it will 100% work.
Its actually working now, its getting into download mode just fine, i think my problem was a cable that just doesnt want to work, i have to position it JUST Right to get a connection with the PC that sticks, or else it connects and disconnects immediatly!
So im on Linux (Ubuntu 11.04) and im using Heimdall One-Click to try and flash Android back on, but i get errors... every time...
The main one im getting is when its trying to setup the interface after i click flash, it just sits there forever and if i click the details button, it shows that it failed.
Any ideas?
Ok, here's the error information when it DOES connect and tries to upload the kernel:
Code:
Claiming interface again...
Setting up interface...
Beginning session...
Handshaking with Loke...
Downloading device's PIT file...
PIT file download sucessful
Uploading KERNELKERNEL upload failed!
Ending session...ERROR: Failed to send file part packet!
Clearly not a lot of information, but i'm using Terminal to run the jar file in administrator mode, and it does this each way.. I think im goin to reboot and try odin one-click in windows and see if i get anything different?
Ok back in Windows 7. Using the AIO toolbox, im doing the 1 click flash to stock option, and in Odin, this is what i see after hitting the start button:
Code:
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
<ID:0/004> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/004> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
Never really changes from that....? I've also tried Odin 3-Click where i select the PIT file and the PDA file (the firmware file) and do it that way but that also freezes and doesnt continue... Any ideas?

Nope, grabbed the shiny new one thats only been used a few times. I can get into download mode, but nothing will flash... And the ONLY way to get into download mode is to plug in the usb cable and hold down the volume buttons when putting in the battery, no other "simple" method works (havent tried the jig or unbrickable mods).
Wow i finally got it! Its actually progressing through the flash right now, and i think i know what happened.
In windows, when you connect and disconnect a device, windows lets you know with sounds... Well with a new cord or old cord, the phone would reconnect a few times (many more with the old cord) when plugging it in and getting it going, and when it does it many times, the flash doesnt work...
But when i connect it the first time and am careful not to move anything so that it connects only once and i click the start button, it works!
It just passed the AT&T logo and finished the animation for the Galaxy S logo.. Wow its gonna work! Sweet jebus!
Glad it is working.
it did seem from what you were posting you were having a connection problem such as a bad cable.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yeah it seemed like a cable problem, but its really just the port on the phone, its so worn out the mini-usb fits in loosly, even brand new cables... ugg...
Well now im having other scrambled screen issues, but they only occurred after installing the Apex 10 rom, so im talking with them now to see if they have any idea why its doing that... If they cant figure out the scrambled screen issue im having, than im gonna try some other roms to determine if its them or the phone.. Could be either!
Thanks for the help!
Apex is a gingerbread rom looks like u did not flashed the GB bootloaders before flashing the rom.
It can be internal memory problem (or RAM). Some PC do the same with BIOS problem

you also won't be able to get into recovery.
If you're going to flash bootloaders with your connection issues it is quite possible you will hard brick if it disconnects while the flash is in progress.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S1 I9000 Stuck At Galaxy S Boot Screen Can't Get Into Recovery?

Hey,
I tried flashing a new kernal via Odin but my laptop switched off halfway through and now when I switch on my Galaxy S1 (i9000) it get's stuck at the Galaxy S GT-I9000 Samsung screen . I can't get it into recovery although I can access download mode and it is recognized in Odin. I think it should just be as simple as reflashing the PDA, MODEM and CSC file through Odin although If anyone can help me acquire these stock files or by using any other methods to restore my phone back to normal It'll be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Ainaa

you can get from My Android Collections and or a solution from My Android Solutions or use a rescue kit
But First powerdown, pull out Battery, SIM CARD, and EXT.SD card, press power button for a minute, than powerup without SIM and Ext.SD Card, after flashing and reboot , insert them back
Tips before Flashing:-
Backup all your important files, contacts, SMS, game data, images etc to PC or Ext SD card. or make Nanadroid Backup If you have CWM
Backup your EFS Folder to PC or Ext SD card
Enable USB Debugging on Phone. Touch menu> Settings> Applications> Development>
Charge your battery to more than 50% before you attempt any sort of flashing.
Disable Samsung KIES when using Odin. Kill Kies.exe, KiesTrayAgent.exe, & KiesPDLR.exe using Task Manager on PC
Use only ROM and solution for your model and Wipe x3
Thanks for all the help guys but still no luck .
I've tried what you've said xsenman by using the ezboot recovery tool although its still not booting up. It gets to this screen and then stops;

I've flashed the EZboot recovery and then I installed the CFRoot rom although it still keeps getting stuck at the start screen. During the Odin flashing part it says it's passed with no failures but it still won't start.

It still isn't working Donovan, thanks for all your help so far though, any more suggestions?
Does it pass in odin? Does it reboot after pass, does it install something after Samsung logo? Or does it reboots and hangs in Samsung logo right away?
It passes in Odin and then it just hangs at the first boot screen like the picture on page 1. I still can't get into recovery and for some reason to get into download mode I press the down volume key and the side sleep button without having to press the OK button.

[Q] N7000 bricked?

Hello, peeps!
So I was when starting an application, my phone doesn't respond. Tried the power button and it didn't work so I removed the battery and placed it back in.
Here's when my nightmare starts. My phone is stuck at the "GT-N7000" screen, and I cannot proceed further. I'm unable to start Recovery Mode (Vol Up + Power + Home), and only Download Mode works.
However, I tried flashing stock roms, Odin showed no progress even after almost 2 hours.
What seems to be the issue? Is it a hard brick?
Questions should be in the Q&A section.
Is odin able to detect the phone.. ( the port square in odin turns yellow/blue?).
check if there are any Kies processes running in the task manager.. kill them, restart odin and restart phone in download mode and try again.

stuck at the NAND Write part, and the progress bar shows no progress at all (the green bar thing). Could this mean hard brick?
do you have warranty? If yes, take it to Samsung and tell them to rectify it. If no warranty then, you will need to get into recovery may be by flashing a kernel using odin.

Wow...thank you for such quick replies!!
Nope, no longer in warranty..Can I have a link to the kernel file?
Thank you so much!
Before you go about this.. try a reboot PC, reboot download mode phone. try a original USB cable and main USB port of pc and flash again,
If above still stops at NAND
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
look for a tar.md5 file which is odin flashable. If you remember the build number of you phone, then pick that else get any JB kernel and flash using odin. check if odin gives a pass.

Sorry for double posting, here's the screenshot..
you dont need to select it everywhere... just the PDA ONLY.
1. download http://d-h.st/FVh.. this is a PIT file.. select it in the PIT partition. Check it and also repartition.
2. select the kernel file in the PDA..
3. press start... (you will need to reboot into download mode every time to start flashing. so remove the battery.. reboot into download mode.. (vol down+home+power)... after you get the screen volume up to continue.. once the screen shows DOWNLOADING, then connect to pc .. open odin
Thanks again!
How long does it normally take for the entire process to complete? The progress bar of "Set Partition" isn't moving at all
There seems to be some issue with the USB Port or Cable or PC.. you need to check ...a full flash of rom takes about 5-10 mins.
use only the back usb port, don't use the front or extension usb ports, they often throw up problems.. good luck
elprix and
I tried everything suggested, but the progress bar doesn't even move
What are the symptoms of hard brick btw?
EDIT : I tried with Odin3 V3.09, and it is stated Re-Partition failed.
EDIT2 : Tried multiple files, progress bar not moving at all.
It don't write to NAND. But it still is able to set partition. Have you tried a different pc? Uninstall Kies completely and then again install Samsung usb drivers.

Hi everyone!
I experience a similar problem as the original poster! Yesterday my phone was fine, but then it rebooted and got stuck. Now I can only get in to "Download mode". There it says:
Odin Mode
Product Name: GT-N7000
Custom binary download: No
Current binary: Samsung Official
I've had it running Paranoid Android successfully for months and then this happened! So where do I go from here,,,? I have Odin downloaded, drivers installed, so what should I try to flash and in what order?
I would be thankful for any help - feel a bit handicapped without a phone!

Exactly what happened to me! Running on PA too! Any solutions?

[Q] Problem with bootloader Galaxy Tab P1000 internal memory corrupted

Hi,
Sorry for my english first.
I have Galaxy Tab GT-P1000... and problem.
My device have corruped internal memory. Problem with flash hidden.rfs and movinand.mst, and samsung logo loop.
At first I try to flash with Odin3 and stock firmware 2.3.3 and I see it's make no diffrent. Try second time this same and I see logo screen with mobile, PC and exclamation mark between.
I use OneClikLoader and I can go on Downloading Mode.
After that I read how to fix problem with internal memory and use only external sd card to make device work.
I download heimdall 3.09, Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread [XWJQ8], Overcome Kernell 4 and probably I do something wrong. Mayby i don't understand somthing. Now I can't explaint what I do wrong. I use Overcome Kernell zImage, mayby I swaaped RECOVERY with KERNEL in Heidmall.
I write what is the situation now.
My device looks like hard brick, almost. It won't turn on when flash is end, push power button and nothing. I connect to the computer and after 20min its show samung logo by long time and go another step, show short animation, but it stuck. I turned off and try turn on and nothing happend.
Somehow I managed turn on download mode on device. I thing I have corruped bootloader, kernell and evrything .
Could someone can help me and tell what should I do, what firmware, bootloader download and how to flash by heimdall only, becouse Odin don't see the device. We can accepted that device is hard bricked and we must flash everything.
Thank You
Whait for help

The first bit of advice is to let this thing charge up, preferably overnight. From the way your describing it, it sounds to me like your Battery has gone flat. And, although you can, and I have done some Flashing with ca~ 10% Battery Life. Its not something you should do regularly. Alas I didn't have a USB Charger back then. I have since corrected this oversight, and now I can fully charge my P1000 with-in 4~5 hours. Assuming that you can only charge though a PC this WILL take longer. A lot longer!
After which you should try to reflash again with the stock Gingerbread 2.3.3. Oden Package gt-p1000_mr.pit, GB_Stock_Safe_v5.tar and the XXJPZ Modem <- VERY IMPORTANT! In my experience if I had forgot to include this File in Oden, and then flashed anyway I'd land up in soft-brick land, which then required me to use the One-Click Recovery which is a PITA to have to keep setting up on each use. (on a Windows7 Netbook).
If you still get errors then you may have to also flash dbdata.tar (PDA Section) to your P1000, and then go back into recovery and rerun Wipe Data/Factory Reset & Wipe Cache Partition. Which should hopefully fix your problems.
These Files must be unzipped! THEY ARE NOT MEANT TO BE FLASHED VIA RECOVERY!! You have to use either Heimdall or Oden to flash this!
It is false to assume you need root to flash a custom Rom. You only need custom recovery.
Rooting allows you to gain super user privileges.
Just because the kernel that has cwm also has root doesn't make rooting necessary.

Thank You very much for help.
I do what you wrote and now I have samsung loop logo and CMR.
Now I can get i recovery mode with CMR V3.0.0.5
Now I only must swap vold.fstab but I can't get SU in adb shell. When I go to the adb shell, then in new cmd windows I put SU and get: perrmision denied. It should be rootend is't?
I will read now how to get SU acces but if someone can tell me how is easy way to swap files, I will be lising
Thank You one more time
