So my vol. down button has broken on my captivate. In stock recovery it wont allow you to cycle through the menu by hitting volume up(the volume button that works). In order to root typically you have to scroll down one selection and select re-install packages to install SU, but seeing as how my volume down button is broken I cant do that. . . So are there any other ways to get root so I can flash back to cm7? Or even a method of simply replacing stock recovery since CWM recovery allows you to cycle through the menu by hitting volume up? As of now I'm a slave to stock, and it's no fun
I am not 100% sure... But can't you use the adb console and do what you need?

Thank you for confirming this for me. I was away from the computer and haven't had to use ADB in a while.
For anyone who is wondering. I found a way to root without the use of the volume buttons. By using a very convenient application. Here is a link to the site on how to do it.

Hi Captivators!
The power button (lock button) is not working. the phone only turns on when battery is re-inserted or when it is plugged in for charging. I cant manage to flash any ROM on recovery because of that. Any way i can re-map the buttons so the volume button responds to powering on/off?
thanks
There are several threads in the general and q&a about this problem....
But also.... Boot into the recovery (and since ur power button is messed up) u can navigate through the cwm recovery with the "capacitive" buttons on the captivate. --- Menu= Down, Home= Up, Back arrow= Back, Search button= Select

Hey Guys,
i was just trying out the new nightly and everything was working fine, till i wanted to install titanium backup through recovery...
I powered of my note which i have just flashed with cm10 (version in thread title) and then powered off.
Holding Volume-UP and Home Button and then Power. Getting into:
CWM based Recovery v6.0.1.3
Volume-Up and -Down, also back-touch key are working, but Home button does not... so i can't confirm any menu options.
Tried also only Volume-UP and Power but that's also not possible. I could only flash the older safe cm9 kernel with odin and there the home button works like expected. I hope anyone has any idea what i could do...
Or is it possible to flash the kernel from cm9 and work with cm10?
And could i go back to stock ics 4.0.3 without any problems?
Regards,
zentaury

You can't flash cm9 kernel on a cm10 rom.
For stock ics just download stock rom file and flash it via mobileodin or pcodin...

Okay thx that helps me out.
But could someone confirm that the cw recovery is not working correctly? Or am i doing something wrong?
It's working. Just use the power button instead of the home button.

It totally depends on the kernel and the CWM version you are using ? Is it a Touch version ? Is Home key Supported ? In most of cases Power key works instead of Home key.

I don't understand why this is so hard for people.

Because the safe kernel has home button support on my device and after flashing to cm10 it doesn't work...
Power button, great thanks, like in stock recovery...

Hello. I am planning on buying a Captivate from a friend. He is selling it very cheap because the power button does not function. He still uses it everyday (I now wonder what's the procedure to turn it on...)
I know that in order to change roms and enter recovery (or load a custom one) you have to enter the phone in download mode. Will it be possible to do this without a power button?
Many thanks
Yep. ---- ADB, Terminal Emulator, and Jig. Although u do not need the power button to get into Download mode. And as for Recovery, once u r in there u should be able to navigate and select with the capacitive buttons.

My power button is spotty as well and I did not know this. Ill definitely try it out. Always struggle with recovery.
KK4 based Corn Kernel v7.0A for sure is able to be navigated in the recovery via the capacitive buttons.

I have this common problem with the ace, low internal memory. Ive done all the system resets, app2sd, clear cache, uninstall stuff, move to sd etc Done it all and it won't sort out the problem. So after hours of googling, the solution appears to be rooting.
I have a 32gb sd card and want it filled with apps and games so im 90% sure on rooting. But how safe is it? how easy? does it work? someone said i can root my phone so my sd card can act as the internal memory. But if i do this, can i still eject my sd card, put it in my computer and take files off there? should i root? someone said there is a 1superclick to root and de root, anyone?
I know its a lot of questions but any help is great.
Thanks
For me rooting was easy, i used a different program, but the end result is the same. Yes there are scripts etc that will enable you to use a partition on the sd for apps. The main thing to remember is to back up your existing Rom just in case. If you look thru the forums here, there are tutorials on rooting and installing a custom recovery. Welcome to the forums

I rooted mine by flashing this file through the stock recovery.
I don't remember a lot about the stock recovery but if you can, before rooting, backup your ROM.
Download the above file and put it on the root of your SD card (ie. NOT in a folder)
Boot into recovery mode by powering off your device and then powering on holding power+home.
in recovery you can scroll through the options using your volume buttons and select an option by pressing the home button. pressing the power button will take you back a screen.
Choose apply update from sd card option
Scroll through until you find the AceGingerRoot.zip
Press the home button to apply the update.
Now when you reboot the system you should see an android pirate icon in your app drawer. This app should be called SuperUser.
From here on out, you can use app2sd scripts, unlock your phone if desired, change your recovery image (CWM 5 is recommended), play with custom ROMs, etc.
Be warned that your WARRANTY WILL BE VOIDED and that I TAKE ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE DONE TO YOUR DEVICE (though if you follow the directions, nothing bad should happen.)
STAY AWAY FROM ROM MANAGER. IT KILLS ACES.
If AceGingerRoot.zip does not work, try this file instead: upd_1.zip
if that one fails use root.zip

I cant put my phone into reovery mode, it keeps turning off instead
With your phone off, push and hold the home button ( square button @ bottom of screen ) then push the power button. This will take you into recovery. The volume button will scroll and the home button will allow you to chose your options.

Turn off your device and leave it for a few seconds.
Power on holding power and home buttons together.
When the Samsung logo appears, let go of power and continue holding home.
You should see a screen with blue text, touch will be disabled. That is recovery mode. When you see this, you can let go of home and scroll with volume up/down. Use there home button to select an option.

If you are running stock rom you may have to uncheck fastboot in your settings. Been awhile since i have been on stock, and forget exactly where to find it.

I keep trying, ive read the same instructions everywhere and seen videos but it wont do it. ive done it exactly the way its said and tried 20 times, no sucess
The program i used for root is called Unlock Root ( google it ). Its pretty simple to use. Just follow the instructions. It should work. Again its something you do at your own risk, i am not responsible if something goes wrong. Good luck.

I have done lots of reading and there is so much information, but after all that, not being technically minded I didn't feel confident myself so I sent my phone to a guy on ebay who Unlocked, Rooted, Installed a better ROM (Looks like Jellybean on the Galaxy S2) and fixed my low memory issues using appstosd, reasonable value as well, if it helps anyone else this is the ebay listing cgi.ebay.co.uk\221232033776 Regards, Mike
