Awesome got stickied! Win!
My first question is Am I the only one not able to get in IRC?

Do the lock screen music controls work with the stock music app? or is it just mine that doesn't work?
I get LS controls if I use Google Music but it sucks up battery :/
on RC1.01

Thank you sir I shall thank you tomorow, all taped out

Just making sure, as of right now it's not possible to mount the SD card to a PC and transfer files this way, right?

Not sure on glitch, but running RC2.11+Nushor's big mem 20120201 AND 20120101 worked just fine.

Does anyone know a good modem for this that works in Oregon? Every modem I use I get good signal and sound on my end but the sound on the other end is low.

No Wifi
Flashed 2.1 yesterday all went well but no wifi. Tried crusecontrl's MO found here all went well but still no wifi. Tried the JVT modem without success as well, so went back to JK3 as JVT 3G connection was no bueno. Any suggestions as to where else I should be looking? Did not see this issue in the known bug list.
Thanks,
SGH-1897
Modem: I9000JK3
Kernel: 3.0.8 Nushor
Never-mind..user error, people like to turn off routers for fun.

I'm using KI1 in Corvallis, and it's working great. No complaints on either end.

Captivate Modem
For anyone who is experiencing problems with their call quality on the Captivate (I897) here is a modem that works:
www.mediafire.com/?bps9bw65jno2a4o
This appears to be one of the only modems I could flash that did not sound distorted (garbled, low, static) in any manner. Only downside is that the cell signal strength is slightly weaker than the other I897 modems I tried. Sound quality is more important than cell signal strength.

Speaking of modems, anyone has a suggestion for a modem that works good in Canada (if in Montreal, even better)?
Sound clarity is fine but my signal is quite weak and outside the city, I can't get 3G.
Also, where can I find a trustworthy source for the stock modem if I need to revert back to it after some experiments?
Thanks!

Thanks. I did but there's nothing in the map for Montreal. I will probably give KG3 a try.
Anyone experienced issues when reverting back to stock modem?
Also, is the procedure mentioned in the how-to (making sure the reception is poor, therefore forcing the band in 850) is still valid?

Rogers seems to play well with KC1, if you want to give that a try.

I posted this question in the original thread for ICS. I installed ICS RC 2.1 this morning over cm7/miui rebooted cleared the cache and rebooted again. The soft buttons have only worked a handful of times. I'm using the Glitch kernel it came bundled with. Any help would be great. Thanks adzidek for pointing me to this thread.

You need to switch the kernel. Either flash a newer glitch found at their thread, or flash one of nushor's kernels at ics.darkirc.me
You might need to factory reset, but I know that newer nushor kernels need wipe cache and dalvik before flashing the kernel.

Modem Questions
Is the procedure for flashing modems with this ICS ROM the same as before? Just selecting a modem and flashing in CWM?
I'm running the ICS RC2.11 with Nushor's r3148v kernal for I897 and I897 AT&T GB Bootloaders. Everything works great for me, other than the known issue with the video recording (WIP) and my low cell signal. The sound quality is great on calls, however in areas where I used to get 3-4 bars, I'm lucky to have one colored in. Is this just that ICS reports the signal differently, or should I try swapping modems? Also, I know in the past you had to use the modem that matched your kernel (I897 vs. I9000.) Is that still true? I noticed after flashing Nushor's and finally booting successfully, that I have JVT which is a I9000 modem. I presume then that I just need to use any one of the CM ICS modems for I9000, and to stay away from I897 modems, correct?
I'm sorry if this seems n00bish, I've been flashing ROM's for quite some time, however my experience with modems is not nearly as vast. Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone,
So I'm trying to odin back to stock. But, I can't access download mode. I've tried adb commands, buttons combos, everything, including a USB jig, no go. Is download mode not built into these ICS builds?
How can I access download mode??
I was thinking about flashing to CM7, then access dl mode, then stock. But, can't flash to CM7 due to build.prop errors that I can't overcome (despite making the proper corrections).
I'm out of ideas, and would really appreciate help!
Thanks
Smith
EDIT: found the RC1 zip lying around and flashed that, and it happened to contain a bootloader with download mode. We're good. Thanks

Kernels causing reboots? Or is it something else

When I was on DocRambone's 7.5 JPA with the older ReOrient kernel 2.1.1 I never had soft reboot problems and then it seems I started getting them after a lot of the Captivate kernels started incorporating these small tweaks.
After reading a lot of other posts other people have been having this same problem but we have no idea what is causing it. At first I thought it was one of the tweaks that you enable in the new recovery ULF tweak section but after disabling all those tweaks and doing a factory reset I was still getting them.
I tried a very untweaked setting with haptic feedback and only bln (no lagfixes, etc...) and it still happened.
Has anyone been able to find the culprit? I've tried 2 different kernels: Reorient and SetiroN's.
When I have my phone in my pocket and I'm driving I'll randomly feel haptic feedback even though I dont have a call or text and shortly thereafter I'll get 2 small vibrations and then a reboot. Once it reboots it seems to come back up for a few minutes and reboot again. I was using ChompSMS with BLN and haptic enabled and that was pretty much the only things I changed from stock.
P.S - The purpose of this thread is to put a collaborative effort in finding out WHY our phones are restarting for some unknown reason. As this community and devs grow, sometimes problems like this arise.
I have seen a few post about the reboots. I have never had any with the kernels. Its kinda strange some of us dont have the issue.
there are several reasons for soft reboots.
if you are running an i9000 rom with a captivate modem, you will get them
if you are running an i9000 rom with a particular modem that doesnt work in your area, you will get them when the modem tries to hand off between towers.
you can get them from oc/uv, bad framework hacks, bad rom, etc. it is all circumstantial, it all depends on what changes you have made from stock....

The DocRambone 7.1 and 7.5 I9000 ROM uses the JPP modem if I'm not mistaken, and I never had reboots. It wasn't until I went to reorient kernel 2.1.2 (or 2.1.3 can't remember) that these reboots occurred.
Right now I'm doing Doc 7.6 MikeyMike01 with JG8 modem and SetiroN 1.2. I also had a previous setup of using JPP and a different rom with both kernels and had reboot problems.
If the modem is somehow causing reboots I may go to the stock captivate modem and see what's going on.
So far in my apartment the phone has not rebooted by itself (has had a constant HSUPA connection). I'm also running the ROM stock without recovering any of my apps. When I leave here soon I'll see if my phone restarts. If it does, then it would appear a modem issue may be at hand.

as i stated earlier, the soft reboots usually occur due to modem/rom incompatibilities when the modem is trying to hand off from network to network.
this was a part of our experiments with the ji6/jpk roms that boomerod, shep, and several others were testing. it has to do mostly with the 850mhz frequency.

i am on jpp right now also, and am about to go for a drive to make sure its completely stable with the handoffs.
I remember one time i did a certain combination of install rom, restore apps and apply jfs lagfix and a popup came up that said i had mismatching uid's and that i had to format /data directory.
Sure enough soft reboots all.over the place after some fc's.
I found that the best way to use the lagfix is to restore apps b4 lagfix and activate the tweaks at the same time as the fix. It works for me

Ya... as soon I started driving my phone would restart. When it's at home nice and solid connection theres no problem lol
So if we narrowed it down to a possible modem issue lets start testing which ones work.
Fatttire - If you could attach the modem you're using so we can try it out that'd be cool did anyone play with the combi bands or any other settings within the service mode?

I didn't even restore apps or do any lagfixes and I'm having this issue Good to see yours worked for you though. Hopefully we'll find a modem thats compatible with this JPA/JPP setup.
I've only used stock modems on our two captivates - occasionally they will restart out of the blue.
Once in particular I think it was because of a live wallpaper. After disabling it, everything seemed smooth running again. I just use plain black wallpaper and mine never reboots.

Ive done so many weird configs of roms/firmware/kernel/custom frameworks and I've never had an issue with reboots. I ran a 2.1 i9000 setup with HSUPA and that never ever reset on me.

The JG8 is an Eclair modem, not Froyo. Its purpose is to use at the beginning of an install from stock JF6. Once you have the rom and kernel you want, you need to replace it with a Froyo (suggest JPP) modem.
Don't leave yourself running a Froyo (i.e. Shep) rom with an Eclair modem, you are just asking for trouble.

froyo rom for rogers i896 captivate

is anyone building a froyo rom for i896 captivate from rogers, there has been alot of problems with people flashing to at&t roms and failing to restore their original stock rogers rom. This is the only reason keeping me back from flashing to an already available 2.2 froyo rom. I know nothing about linux, programming or any of that stuff and was wondering how difficult it would be to build a rogers 2.2 froyo rom or are there pieces missing to build it?
look at this tutorial:

i dont see how it could be THAT difficult to take the at&t leaked froyo rom and make the necessary adjustments for the i896 captivate. I just dont want to lose my GPS function (its working very good) and i dont want the annoying AT&T splash screen

If you know nothing (your words: first post), then how can you gauge the difficulty of doing such a thing?
I just helped one of my friends load the 2.2 AT&T i897 update, working fine on his Rogers i896. Soon as Cyanogen release something for the Captivate we plan to be updating him again.
At this point for the GPS to be fixed I'm pretty sure we need the source code or atleast a rom from ATT that it works 100% correctly with.
The cognition roms for the I897 work fine on the I896 -- thats pretty much how I've had my friends Rogers Captivate running froyo since launch week. You obviously have to load your own APN settings and whatnot though.
PS. Probably best to use the rogers modem file -- it's in the I896 thread.
Lots of people are running or have tried there. I do have some build prop changes and apn changes for the rom but until I have my friends phone back here to test them I don't want to share something that could very well just bootloop. Plus I want to try cognition b2.4 on there and adapt the changes to that since that just came out too.

you get the drift , its nto complicated , its just we need someoen we same interest as us i.e a candadian dev or a bored US one
btw I use all the roms and I just flash our rogers modem on top of it so my gps is perfect
well one of the main reasons i want to flash to a 2.2 rom is because i have read that it improves battery life and fluidity of the OS, i could possibly live without flash 10.1 and the use of installing apps on my sd card for a little while.
I'm on my 7-8th charge right now, could be slightly more and my battery life is average at best. Had it running 2 hours before i went to school, fiddled with it a little (a little music, a little browsing, testing out GPS functions) then tested out the GPS using Ndrive to school. During this time i had some ocassional 3g use (<10 minutes), about 20-30 minutes of wifi browsing, and about 3-3.5 hours of listening to music. I also used the gps coming home to test out its accuracy and functionalities. By the time i got home my battery was red.
I've calibrated the battery also, and used several guides to help improve battery but nothing that i have done has made any dramatic difference. I was thinking maybe a 2.2 rom could help with that.
Sorry, i m very new to Android phone ~~~
I wanted to flash my i896 into Froyo 2.2

It's been hit or miss with that keeping the gps fixed (depending on the phone -- i flashed 3 -- and what it was coming from or what the user was playing with -- mostly different cognition versions). The key factor there seems to be doing a wipe even after a fresh reflash, then it seems to work well consistently. Thanks for the feedback on it. I don't have a captivate myself so it makes it impossible to do any realworld testing on my own.

Yeah I'm too nervous to do much digging around there -- I think the first one is being kept along with the bootloader. Some other folks on here were trying to sort that out. The second part of the bootscreen is easy to change. I think we're going to be stuck with the ATT one until we see something from Rogers (2.2) or someone does some very tricky and potentially dangerous work. I just wouldn't worry about it for now I were you. In theory most if all damage you'd do could be repaired with ODIN but definitely don't quote me on that.
so far my flashes have been pretty rough.
I came from a nexus one where i could just load the .zip file and install easy as pie from there. This bul**** odin flashing drives me up the damn wall, but i can get it done, I have had this phone for a week and have tried many roms. I tried going back to stock rogers and it was a complete fail. When odin flashed back to rogers, i still had the stupid att logo, but whatever i dont see it all the time, and it would randomly try to download things from the market. Tried reflashing, and the same thing, except 5 mins later and the market just wouldnt download a damn thing for me. I dont have a reason for this but whatever.
I have tried going to stock i897 att rom and my phone will not boot, it just just a boot loop, so i cant even go to perception build, so i had to odin flash to cognition 2.2.
So far I am pretty happy with it... battery life is better than stock, no lag, it comes pre-rooted, but my signal isnt strong like when i first got the phone on factory stock OS. I want to flash the modem files only but i havent been able to find the files or the instructions how to.
I am thinking of going back to the nexus one, but am willing to make this phone work for me. Only one more thing i dont like about this phone, is the camera! Out of all things the camera kinda licks a sweaty nootsack.
i896 i897 i9088
I think i896 is the same as i897。You can use adb to enter download mod, and use i897's rom. In china, we have i9088 wich is Chinese captivate. It can also use i897's rom. No Bug, no problem.

[Q] Possible to eliminate bluetooth voice static with stock rogers rom and speedmod?

Stock Cognition modem is JL1.

So I've been doing research into fixing my bluetooth voice calling static issue. I'm running stock Rogers 2.2 on my I896 Captivate from Rogers. I've installed the latest speedmod kernel. As a result of some posts which claimed I needed to match my modem to my kernel I've tried a number of different modems in attempts to get rid of the static yet had no luck.
Is what this user posted above true, there is no combination of modem + speedmodkernel + stock rogers rom, that will fix the bluetooth voice static issue?
After each modem attempt I deleted my bluetooth profile on my phone and reconnected and still no luck. One user mentioned having to do a system reset on my phone after each modem as just deleting the bluetooth profile is not enough...can anyone confirm that? And what kind of reset would that be, key sequence?
Thanks so very much for any information!!!

I was experiencing same kind of what you are experiencing now. Seems to be incompatibility issue while i'm on stock froyo and loaded speedmod kernel static is horrible (bluetooth) and during a call the other line have a hard time to understand what I have said. Tried clearing dalvik cache, factory reset, etc. only solution I had was to install a custom rom with speedmod kernel on it as the dev already tweaked it to be more compatible with the rom. So many roms out there it's up to you to choose. Once you have tried you may never think of going back to stock.

Well...that's the thing...I've tried pretty much all the popular roms and liked a few, but once rogers released 2.2 I flashed back to stock and use manual addons like speedmod/bln/lagfix/themes/batteryicon/etc. I feel I have more control this way and there seem to be less mysterious 'bugs' then when using cooked roms.
I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a fancy kernel based on the rogers stock kernel, but nothing has come about yet....
So at this point I'm still not clear if this is even possible, has anyone achieved running stock rogers 2.2 with a custom kernel and found some modem that doesn't cause an earfull of bluetooth static?
Thanks!
Cheers!

Try running the JK4 modem with the Speedmod Kernel. That always seemed to work out for me.
I am in the same boat ! Stock Froyo on I896 Rogers. I installed SpeedMod and got noisy bluetooth. Read a lot in here and flashed JK4 modem, still no go...
Everything is doing great ! SpeedMod with LagFix enabled is amazing ! But i need my bluetooth !!
Any Help would be great !!!
Thanks.
I tried and tried and eventually had to go on a long road trip and really wanted bluetooth to work...so I flashed CM7 and it's super nice and bluetooth works great! The only loss, IN MY OPINION, is that at the moment BLN is not included/working and only a couple people developing 3rd party kernels are looking into getting BLN back into a CM7 kernel.
CM7 is by default ext4 (so lagfixed out of the box!). And there are kernels for Voodoo sound/video/oc/uv.....just not BLN right now :/
So if you dont need BLN notifications, then give CM7 a shot!

Voice not working afater flash back to stock using Odin

I have a Captivate (model 1012) and was running Andromeda 3.
I guess the short version of this is as follows.
Wanted to flash back to stock Froyo from Andromeda.
First tried using Heimdall but failed 1/2 way through resulting in the dreaded Phone__!__PC icons.
Was unable to 3 button to download because my phone does not support it, so I used the 100K +1K ohm resistor "fix" which got me back into download mode.
Then used Odin3 One-click to reflash and applied the update.zip that it requested.
I am at the point where I can use Kies-mini to update to 2.2 which I have not done yet.
Everything is working just great except that when I make or receive a phone call, the person calling cannot hear me and I cannot here them.
It rings on an incoming call, I answer but I cant hear them and they cannot hear me.
One thing I do notice, is when I place a call and hit the speaker button, it turns green like the speaker is on, but I cannot hear it dialing like I used to.
After updating via Kies, the firmware version is 2.2 and baseband is I897uckb1.
Should I try to reflash or try a different modem?
Any suggestions?
Try re-downloading Odin 1click, verify the file size, then run it again. At that point, try the phone out to see if it has sound during calls.
I'm not sure why you're using Kies to go to 2.2....and your post is a little confusing. At one point you said you did not update to 2.2, then later you said it was on 2.2.
My bet is you just got a bad flash. Try it again, and you should be good to go. Heck, a factory reset might even do the trick.
Sent from my Cappy using Swype and my finger.
The problem is your modem. Replace it with one that is not an i9000 modem
Sent from my HTC Desire HD
Yes I agree. Sounds more like a modem issue than anything else.
One way to test would be to flash back to Andromeda and see if things start working right.
Wouldn't the Odin1-click put everything on new? PRL, SBL, kernel, modem and ROM?

yes. but he didnt actually use the real one click, because he indicated that he had to use a .zip file for it.....
Thanks everyone for the help. Was able to flash back to Andromeda 3 and everything works just fine. Not sure what is going on with Odin.
I would like to try it again. Can anyone recomend a good stock modem to try for my I897 just in case I get stuck again? The Odin that I used was I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe (the update.zip I think was just for CWM).
Again, thanks for all the input.
Hello.
I'm having almost this same problem, just that I actually can hear the other people talking but they can't hear me. This problem doesn't happen when I go back to stock Eclair, there I can normally make calls and talk, but when I flash any custom ROM (I've tried Serendipity, MIUI and Darky's) this issue appears again :S
Please help me I'm really starting to lose my head
PD: Sorry for my English.

Can you hear me now?

Ok, so I'm having another issue, I can make calls fine and receive them too, hear the other person just fine, but THEY CANT HEAR ME!!! i have no idea how to fix this, is it a hardware issue, software issue, something I can fix? Or do i need to contact assurion? (Should let u all know that i filed a claim with assurion, and got a replacement phone, a refurbished one, haven't done much with it except root it, enable side loading, and flash speedmod kernal, not sure if mic hasn't worked from start or cuz of what i did) any help with this issue would be awesome!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Well try flashing stock rom or any other rom it should get sorted out,you didnt mention which android version you are on and which build
Its the kernel. That is a reoriented I9000 kernel, which requires an I9000 modem.
There is a modem thread sticky on to of the development section, grab an I9000 modem from there and flash it in recovery. Sound issue will be resolved, oh and bonus: hspa will now be available
