[Q] General opinion about Roms and Kernels - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm really new to this whole thing and reading more and more makes me very confused...
It took me half day to root & flash onecosmic's ICS RC2.1 & it's kernel
I'm having few issues with USB recognition and heard that this mod drains quite a lot of battery
So I was wondering if someone can give me an advise on (very straight forward) which rom and kernel is best to use at this stage, in terms of stability and performance
Thank you very much~

If you are new to all this, I suggest you first try out either CM7 or MIUI rom instead of ICS .. though ICS esp. onecosmic's is quite stable for daily use, it still lacks the smoothness and stability of CM7 / MIUI ...
Even I shifted to MIUI mintberry edition just today after using ICS for a couple of weeks..
about the kernel, I would suggest keeping the default kernel (that comes with the rom) for now and test other things step by step..

[Q] Looking for a recommended rom

hi
a question for the experts:
im looking for a recommended rom, as fast as possible, including lagfix if needed. Especially when having lots fo apps.
It just that i got this annoying lags on my current Rom, and sometimes i got an annoying delay when hitting an app buttons, up to 3-4 sec.
There are so many roms so i'm a bit lost, and will appreciate if you could help me get the best rom that i'm looking for.
And one more thing if possible: I prefer a detailed HowTo installation guide as possible...
Thanks
if you want to stay close to the base rom... try a deodexed base rom with a kernel supporting lagfix like darkcore..
or try this link (a list of custom roms)
alchemistar.blogspot.com/2010/10/samsung-galaxy-s-custom-roms-list-1014.html
Personally i tried (and adopted) GingerReal :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1025348
Already fast with just this rom. and after activating the voodoo lagfix with cwm it's really fast.
I have a very goo user experience with this rom. (looking forward to V7 (JVQ) that should go out tonight)
Go out to dev and explore, matter of taste/how you use your phone/your preferences......and each rom will have detailed install instructions....if not then pick the dev up on it. You will get as many answers as there are roms with this kind of question, and if your answer is......i haven't got time.....then stay with stock as you won't have time to sort any subsequent problems!
Insanity cm017/glitch v10c
MIUI Galnet V3...give it a try, you won't be disappointed...
i have 2 options for you
1- i tried many roms and i realized that Darky rom is awesome in performance and the team is really cooperating , wait for Darky v.10.2 i expect it come out soon , it will be perfect rom
2- different and fast rom Galnet " make you own iphone look on android galaxy " bring all what you wish , but stil have few defects but they make weekly developing , and v3 will come out tonight
Or CM7 - fastest ROM beside MIUI.

From my point of view, MIUI is really great in comparison to the original SGS mod. I'm using it and updating it every two weeks because of the updates it's providing us.
Well im usin F1 galaxy s2 rom it makes you feel like u are usin galaxy s2 and its fast without lagfix enabled.
My + its for Juwe's Smart Edition > v5.0 XXJVP .... Semaphore Kernel its in Rom and you can flash new v. with cwm ....
Rom its very stable , fast and very nice .... in my case - all works fine

I definitely recommend the Super Galaxy rom by socialsp!

Which ported ICS ROM is the best?

Tell me please. I wanna flash ICS in my GT-I9000
Thanks
I guess CyanogenMod 9 for SGS will be the best but it's still in alpha. I can't wait to see stable version (anybody knows when it will be released?). As far I didn't use any ICS rom so notnasty9999 you should wait for other replies.

Without fail daxinfinity's codenameandroid port;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1485734
It's at the level where the CM9 alpha should be - great performance (especially with glitch kernel), best battery life of the ICS roms, and the most customization.
Do yourself a favour as well, install the apex launcher - looks and performance of the stock ICS launcher, but cyanogen levels of customization.
I tried cm9 and onecosmic
And now i got AKOP port 2.02
There is no lags , FC , not stuck , A lot of customizion
And it is the best for me

AOKP 2.02beta with Semaphore 0.8.1 is extremelly fast, reliable, stable! highly recommend.
ive just installed daxinfinitys got to say pretty good no problems so far love all the extra tweaks you can do.
Teamhacksung is the best. In my experience, this is the most stable ICS build (currently on build 16). I have messed about with AOSP and AOSK and some of the other versions and at first they seem better but often they seem to have a fault - lockscreen freezes or problems with my external sd card and transferring large files with my laptop. I have found the semaphore kernerl (latest version) really good when setting on battery saver mode. You can also change the boot animation with ROM toolbox - good stuff there!

is a bad habit.
I am aware of badly implemented search function of xda, but still?
Best practice = read more, try self.
Pattern of phone usage will always be different.
Bro, hello there, I have 2 SGS, one is running CM9 with original kernel, and another one is with TEAMICSSGS RC4.2+Devil kernel 14.2LED, no doubt, TeamICSSGS is my choice, it is fast, reliable, and most major function are working, around 95% of the function are working perfectly, especially the camera video effect, which makes my day..Try it, trust me..=D..have a nice day
Teamhacksung will pwn all the others and still does.
All those 'wow I have a new ROM' which is totally PAWITP's with a bit of my
own (kuch % battery and don't know what other kinda stupid stuff) are so
not comparable.
They call it SLIM ICS because they deleted some apps, wow it has such a
better battery and lightningfast, yeah well every dork can do that (but
they still call it a new ROM mhowhehaha). It's all in between the ears.
Still think there a 2 main ICS ROMS:
- OneCosmic
- TeamHacksung
And TeamHacksung, here flashed on my i9000, is still the best from build #1.
Stable, stock or on Glitch, so no need to flash all the 20 other useless things.
I don't even flash my phone now every week and my phone is kinda stable,
the accu's getting used to the build and with everything on I have a good
phone.
I use AOKP and I am very satisfied.
It has only very minor bugs and is perfectly suitable for everyday use.
I haven't used Teamhacksung as I had the "hello hello" bug in CM7 which others are reporting in Teamhacksungs CM9.
Currently using Team ICSSGS 4.2 with semaphore 0.8.1. Been using this combo for almost two weeks & battery life is awesome with great performance and for what I use my phone for it is super stable, virtually lag free and with no noticeable issues.
While I do miss all the customisations of the CM Roms the "hello hello" bug is a deal breaker for me. There is apparently a solution to actually fixing the bug but this also appears to work for some people but not all. (You can download hbb2_test.zip - http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=4681 if you have these issues)
I agree with inozako TEAMICSSGS RC4.2+Devil kernel 14.2LED, is the best solution....try it
Testing almost all, cm9, CNA ('s), AOKP ('s), MIUIv4 and finally AOKP 2.0.2 is the best, the most stable, the easiest to customize & very good battery.
in my signature no doubt
I haven't tried Teamhacksung's since i have i9000b and it doesnt support it but i did try ICSSGS and i tell you i cant think on a better rom. You should give it a try, since its avalible for i9000, i9000b captivate and vibrant

[Q] Rom with best battery performance?

Hey guys, i m new to your forum, so pls be nice to me :-D i just bought the i9001 for my girlfriend and i wanna flash a custom rom right away. My question now is, which rom is the most stable and offers the best battery performance? I dont wanna overclock it, since it seems to be fast enough, but as i already know from my lg device, is that battery is much better on cust roms. So i hope you can help me out and guide me the right direction. If you already have got a discussion thread about roms, pls guide me there, since i couldnt find it till now. Flashing and so on, seems far more complicated with samsung devices but i ll keep on reading, in order not to screw this beautiful device

Hi, try this UCM GingerBread Rom 2.1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457437). I have installed it in my SGS+ yesterday. For now this ROM seems to be the best battery and performance combination.
best battery for me was stock rom 2.3.5
I think you will have as many answers as there's customs ROM fo GS2... I have my GS2 since few weeks only and I already tested 5 ROMS to assess which one is the best for my own usage (performance / quality / stability / battery life, etc).
So I think the ROM which has the best match for someone's usage will not be the same than for you.
So far if I could give you a reco it would be for Gingermod, CheckROM v6 or just Stock ROM + Siyha Kernel. But again take it only as my own view which can be different for someone else

He asks for a rom for the sgs+ not the sgs2.
I think it doesn't really matter which rom you take. It does matter what governor and which I/O scheduler you take! change them with no frills cpu controll for the market.
Oh thanks your right, thank all of you guys, I think i ll read some more and try to flash first, when i have enough knowledge about the phone. As far as i got, i first of all need to flash the cust recovery, then pick a rom and either flash it via recovery, or client on pc. Depending on the rom. But i guess i ll take the one from first post, since i only want it to improve battery life and not the overall performance, or even oc, since it is a good phone already ;-) again, thank all of you so far :-D
One more thing, whats the best governor and iosched for you? I prefere interactivex and simple, for battery

Starting point for my P990

Hi, i'm new here, and i got a P990 Optimus Dual 2 days ago. Yesterday morning i flashed CWM and then the rom Nova-HD.
I tried it for a while and i like it, kinda smooth etc... but it have so many bugs and i can't use this ROM for my daily Usage (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1607238 same problems as this fellow).
I want to try them all, but i need a starting point to rely on (and i want ICS too). So my point is: Could you advice me on a ROM/KERNEL/OTHER STUFF that is stable (not so much, i can live with bugs), does not drain battery in 5 hours, and is reliable?
I'm not so new here (i had a liquid/mini/metal and a SGS+) but when i look at the changelogs and Release logs i really don't know what to look at...
I highly recommend Temasek's Unofficial CM7 ROM.
Rock solid for stability. Only known bug is the arbitrary charging SOD that some people are getting.

If you want a stable ICS rom, you have to wait till LG official release ICS.
If you want a stable rom, use temasek`s unofficial CM7 build or
Chuck Norris Edition V.1.2, (it`s based on temasek`s rom, with additional tweaks and customization options).
The official LG V20Q/V20R, is also a good stock gingerbread rom.
(of course there will be other very good roms, but I don`t have tried other roms actually)
Uhm, i don't really know if i can go back from ICS... ya, it is bugged and all, but it is also so ****ing beautiful *_* i don't really mind bugs, i need stability only on SMS and calls... i can fix internet and the rest with a reboot =|
So the question is, which is the most stable ICS CM9 ROM/KERNEL?
EDIT: I am now installing harsch kernel
I really liked the combo of nova hd and harsh kernel. However I missed being able to record video, so it was back to stock gingerbread for me...
Yeah, i like it too. I flashed harsh yesterday and i don't have any bugs (except for videos and wi-fi tethering [not tested]) This combo is quite nice ^^

[Q] Few questions and problems, new Gnote user

i'm a fresh Gnote user , moved a day ago from S2 with AOKP rom, and well... few problems and questions for Gnote:
basic info: the Gnote came to me (2nd hand) with Stunner 1.4.19 rom, LP5 kernel and LP5 modem. and i only ran it for a day now.
1. i got horrible battery drain... it just drinks power, while i know it has bigger screen and power consumption, it has a 2500mah battery.
with my old S2 with i could get at least 5~6 screen time hours... and more or less a day out of it.
right now i got 13 hours out of it (was sitting in my pocket while i was at work) with 13% left and 3h24m screen time.
how do i fix this? and is the Sam GB roms better in this matter (like AOKP but not at this price)
2. i knew the speaker on the Gnote was weaker than S2, now i know it for a fact.
i have a crazy idea for how to fix it... but that's for later.
i know that Voodoo Louder gives a sound boost for the headphone is good for the speaker too?
3. if i choose to go from stunner to Sam GB/ICS rom... how to do it? don't want to brick a new phone.
4. i use the LP5 modem and kernel... what modem is considered best for the Gnote? i'm used to the KI3 from the S2 but as a new Gnote user i have no clue whats best for it.
5. never liked stock kernels, what kernel should i use with AOKP roms and/or GB roms?
6. the big question... GB vs ICS, AOKP vs Sam... is there an answer to it?
well sorry for the long post, but i'm new to Gnote
Hey, welcome to the Note
1. Battery drain could be caused by a number of things. Have you tried doing a full wipe? Some people have reported better battery life on the LP6 modem so you can try that as well
2. No idea
3. Going from an AOSP/AOPK rom to another ICS rom (whether is't a Sammy rom or an AOSP/AOPK rom) is just a matter of doing a full wipe and flashing another rom through CWMR. If you wanna go back to GB there's a number of threads in the dev section with all the instructions you need.
4. Opinions are divided between LP5 and LP6. For me LP6 is perfect, great reception, nice 3G speeds and stable wifi.
5. I really like Stunner's ICS roms. You can try updating to 1.4.26.1, look for his thread in the dev section.
6. There's no real answer to that. I've used Darky, Rocket Rom with SpeedMod Kernel, imilka's CM9 v2 and Stunner (beta 5, 1.4.19, 1.4.26.1) and to me Stunner's is the best I've tried. Great battery life, awesome speed and customizable.
Here's a link to the LP6 modem. Just flash it and see what happens. If you don't like it you can always flash back to LP5. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24928440&postcount=4250
Also a new user
Just not my new note and want to install a rom cuz i dont like all the extra stuff in touchwiz, it really feels slow comparing to my SGS2.
Im not new to rooting and flashing but i havent done any since september 2011 so im reading some post and blogs to get updated. And ofcourse i have some questions.
1. Is it possible to run 2 roms on a phone? like using a rommanager?
I want to test a rom first and keep the stock for daily use till i decide.
2. I think im going for those light roms like stunner or liquid but S-pen button doesnt work on those...now my question is the S-pen screenshot function a part of one of the Smemo or Snote apps? or is it really a touchwiz thing? can i install one of these roms and install an S-pen app to get the screenshot function back with the Spen button?
Thx!
advice
try this rom, is Jelly bean 4.1.1 is very beautiful, smoothly and best battery from all roms I tested and a plus is that S pen is working very smoothly and you can keep all your note apps. I tested, paranoid, criskelo, alba, rocket, cm9, cm10, ... nothin compares to this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1883877 blackCNA
